Gordonvale Commemorates ANZAC Day 2017 FREE

Gordonvale paused on the 25th of April to commemorate the 102nd anniversary of the ANZAC tradition. The dawn service commenced at 4.15am in front of a crowd of about 500 people. The familiar and haunting sound of the didgeridoo filled Norman park as the crowd gathered around the Cenotaph for the service and wreath laying ceremony. Guest speakers were introduced by master of Ceremonies Steven Brain. State treasurer and member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt spoke about the important role an estimated 1200 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women played in all the campaigns during World War 1, despite not being recognized for their efforts for many decades. Mr. Pitt also told the audience that over

57000 Queenslanders both men and women volunteered during World War 1 with many of them killed or injured during the many battles. There are currently over 2500 defence force personnel on overseas operations today. After the dawn service breakfast was enjoyed by many of the attendees. At 9am, service veterans, members of the armed forces, local community groups and school students formed up outside the Gordonvale State Primary School for the march to the Cenotaph. At the cenotaph a large crowd gathered to hear speeches and see the wreath laying ceremony and listen to renditions of the last post and Abide With Me. Many of the speeches this year focused on an often forgotten and hidden casualty of war, being the psychological injuries suffered by returned service personnel. Once the formalities were completed Norman Park was opened up as a temporary RSL club whilst the current hall undergoes a major refurbishment. Food and drinks were on sale and the stage area was the venue for the traditional two up. Gordonvale

always puts on a great commemorative ceremony on ANZAC day and this is set to continue next year in what is hoped to be a newly refurbished hall. All other services throughout the region were also well attended with the rain not deterring the thousands of people in attendance. Lest We Forget.

Stage 3 alignment for the Cairns southern access corridor on the Bruce Highway released • Preferred alignment between Edmonton and Gordonvale publicly released

• 10 kilometre duplication will reduce congestion and allow for expected population growth THE preferred alignment for the 10 kilometre duplication of the Bruce Highway, between Edmonton and Gordonvale, has been released, paving the way for the next Bruce Highway upgrade to begin. Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch MP said Stage 3 of the Cairns Southern Access Corridor on the Bruce Highway will improve traffic flow and road safety south of the city. “The $481 million duplication will cater for future population growth and increasing demand on the road network,” Mr Entsch said. “It’s expected that the Edmonton to Gordonvale section of the Bruce Highway will be used by about 40,000 road users daily when the works are completed, and I have no doubt they’ll be very well-received by commuters travelling through Far North Queensland. “When finished, it’s expected that the project will boost safety and reduce travel times on this section of the Bruce Highway.” Queensland Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt MP, said the upgrade of the southern transport corridor was part of the Cairns Bruce Highway Master Plan. “The Cairns Bruce Highway Upgrade Master Plan released in 2010, detailed the alignment of the Bruce Highway from Draper Street, near the Cairns City Centre, to Wrights Creek, south of Edmonton,” Mr Pitt said. “This proposed alignment between Edmonton and Gordonvale will be an extension of the work already completed. Reduced traffic delays are already being experienced following completion of Stage 1 of the Cairns Bruce Highway Upgrade to the Cairns Southern Access, between Sheehy Road and Ray Jones Drive. “We see this as a priority project; every dollar spent on improving the Bruce Highway means more jobs are created to support locals, their families and the Far North Queensland economy.” The Australian Government has committed up to $384.8 million towards the $481 million project, with the Queensland Government providing the remaining $96.2 million.

“Mulgrave Rambler” Gets Business Guide a New Lease on Life An important piece of Gordonvale’s railway history will receive a new lease on life following its purchase by new owners this month. The No. 4 Nelson, also known as the “Mulgrave Rambler”, was recently sold by MSF Sugar and has found a new home with railway enthusiast, John Morris, and Alan Johnstone, CEO of the Port Douglas Steam Train Company. The Nelson is a new addition to the Steam Train Company’s unique collection of historical locomotives housed at St Crispins in Port Douglas. While the Nelson locomotive wasn’t publically advertised for sale, John became aware of its potential availability through word of mouth and, having previously purchased and restored three coal-fired steam locomotives, he didn’t want to let the opportunity pass by. John’s interest in the Nelson stems from its sugarcane heritage and the importance of the industry to North Queensland’s development, with two of his current locomotives originating from the Mossman Sugar Mill. Under his care, the 1933 Fowler-built ‘Nelson’ will now be restored to its original condition before taking up residence as an exhibition piece at St Crispins. Having previously been enjoyed as a static display in Gordonvale’s Norman Park, and then restored as a tourist train that operated from 'The Mulgrave Rambler', for the past few years the Nelson has been stored at MSF Sugar’s Mulgrave Mill loco yard. This looked destined to be its final resting place until it came to the attention of the Steam Train Company. The transfer of the loco to its new home was organised by MSF Sugar’s Mulgrave Mill, who partnered with Century Cranes and Bugeja Earthmoving to carefully load the Nelson onto its transporter. The official change of ownership took place on Tuesday 11 April 2017.

Peets Falls

Continuing along with our series on places to see in our region, this month we explore the pristine area known as Peets Falls. After turning off of the Gilles Highway onto Goldsborough Road it is only a short four kilometre drive along Downing Road to the entrance of Peets falls. Although the road is dirt and quite narrow it is accessible by conventional vehicle. The entrance to the walking track is currently overgrown and a little difficult to find, however the track itself is quite wide. The track is about 2 kilometres long with a number of small inclines and is easily accomplished by someone with a moderate fitness level. This includes children, so it is one for the whole family. The first part of the track follows the creek line for about 30 minutes before crossing the creek and then a further five minutes you will come to the rock pool at the bottom of the first falls. This is where the real adventure begins. Following the pink tape on the trees will bring you to the bottom of a steep incline. This incline is negotiated by 20 metres of rope that helps you climb to the top a ridge line. Following this ridgeline for another five minutes brings you to the bottom of the second falls. These falls are nothing short of amazing and the rock pools are a great place for a swim. Although only an easy 1 hour round trip, it is advisable to take a bit of extra time to enjoy the pristine area and the lovely pools. This area is one of our regions best kept secrets and a must for anyone living or visiting our area.

Dogs know best! A lady came to me with left shoulder issues. Through her treatment I released a muscle down from her elbow crease which was quite tender. She then told me about her dog who had been constantly licking that same spot for weeks to the point of nosing her arm away so he could get to it.

On her 2nd visit to me as I was doing her treatment and that same muscle wasn’t sore this time. She then told me that her dog had stopped licking there! What a clever dog. He probably thought to himself that he had fixed it so his treatment was not necessary anymore. :) Assisting pain and discomfort. Robyn’s Bowen Therapy & Emmett Technique

Links Drive Gets Nod A new Road linking the Edmonton Industrial Estate at Hargreaves Road with Ray Jones Drive has recently opened, allowing another alternative to the Bruce Highway. Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee has recommended that the streets within the Kate Street connection be renamed “Links Drive”. The Kate Street link, from Ray Jones Drive through to Kowinka Street in White Rock, was established in 2014 and currently consists of four individual street names: Kate Street, Maconachie Street, Jackson Drive and Walters Street. For ease of connection and identification Cairns Regional Council proposed to simplify this connection by bringing it under one common street name. Community consultation undertaken by Council showed that Links Drive was the most popular choice.

The History of Gordonvale Fitness Club Marching Girls- The Silhouettes (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum)

The Gordonvale Marching Girls – the ‘ Silhouettes’ formed in the beginning of 1958, under the umbrella of the Gordonvale National Fitness Club. Mr Syd Carne was their team manager. They did their first street march on June 8th, most probably for the Queens birthday and took out first place at their first competition in September at Babinda. Keith Crappe was conscripted as the team’s first coach as he had some military training and therefore knew something about marching. Beverly Beutel, who had a lot of experience with marching girls down south, really helped the team along with refining their marching skills and steps and the Silhouettes excelled and did very well in their competitions. Mrs Ethel Galetta (known as sister) travelled with the girls whilst they were on competition, as it was requirement that all teams had to be accompanied by a female chaperone. Training was once a week at Alley Park Oval and more often if a competition was coming up. A whistle blast and counting, counting and counting was used to keep pace, although during competitions teams competed to music played by a live band. When the circus came to town and set up on the bullock paddock side of the grandstand at Alley Park, there would be pandemonium as the whistle blowing for the marching girls to assist with their timing, would unsettle all the animals and trainers. The uniform that the girls first marched in was just a simple white dress. The competition uniforms were supplied by the National Fitness Club and comprised of white gloves, a cap, and white pinafore, black jacket adorned with epaulettes, buttons and a woggle. The leader’s uniform was white and originally had a cape, but was shortened and reduced in size so that the arms could be seen. Team members purchased their own white boots and ribbon which was worn across the chest to display pinned medals won in previous competitions. Competitions were held around the Far North Qld Region at least once a month. The Silhouettes travelled as a team in the back of Mr Syd Carne’s covered truck, sitting on the tumbling mats to make for a slightly softer ride. (No seat belts or even seats in those days) A competition team consisted of a leader who controlled by whistle blasts and nine others in three rows of three. On the front right hand side of the nine was the Marker. The program of events on a competition day was usually Grande Parade, Costume Judging, Fall In and Inspection, Set March and finally Own Choice March. Presentations of a pinned medal were made to members of the winning teams in each category and a trophy was awarded to the aggregate winner. The Silhouettes were also invited to participate in many non competitive demonstrations and street marches. On 28th August 1959, Princess Alexandra came to Cairns and the Silhouettes were part of a massed group of marching girls who performed for the Princess. After the successful establishment of the senior girls’ team, a junior team named the Gordonettes was formed in 1959. These girls were between 12 and 14 years of age. On the 10th September 1961, a final break-up of the Silhouettes was held, thus ended another chapter of the history of Gordonvale. Mulgrave Settlers Museum is currently displaying an exhibition on the ‘Silhouettes’ until the 2nd week of June. If anyone has any further items such as buttons, memorabilia, photos etc that they could add to the exhibition it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact the museum on 40561810 Mon – Sat 10am-2pm.

Crocodile Spotted in Popular Swimming Hole A recent crocodile sighting in the popular Ross and Locke swimming area have caused wildlife officers from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection to place warning signs along the banks of the Mulgrave River at Ross and Locke to warn swimmers of the possible lurking danger. Although it is unusual to see crocodiles this far up the river it is not uncommon and in the past they have been seen in the river near Peets Bridge and even further upstream at Roos Road near the bottom of the Gillies Range. There have however been sightings close to Ross and Locke for over 10 years. A trap has been placed at the river in this location in an effort to trap the 2 metre estuarine crocodile and hopefully, once caught it can be relocated to a safer location for all. Although potentially dangerous to humans it has not stopped some swimmers from taking a risk and entering the water and some swimmers have even been seen to be using the trap as a jumping platform. Estuarine crocodiles are found from India to northern Australia, and across to Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. In Queensland, they are known to occur between Gladstone and Cape York Peninsula, and throughout the Gulf of Carpentaria. Although most commonly seen in tidal reaches of rivers, they also occur along beaches and offshore islands in the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait, and in freshwater lagoons, rivers, and swamps up to hundreds of kilometres inland from the coast. In September last year a 4.5 metre monster crocodile was found dead in the Mulgrave River and it appeared to have been killed by unknown persons. Crocodiles are a protected species and it is an offence to interfere with, harm or kill crocodiles, including dead animals, with fines of up to $27,425.

Queens Baton Relay Time is running out to nominate someone you know to participate in the Queens Baton Relay. The Queen’s Baton Relay is a Games tradition that celebrates the Commonwealth’s diversity, inspires community pride and excites people about the world-class festival of sports and culture to come. The Queen’s Baton carries a message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II that calls the Commonwealth’s athletes to come together in peaceful and friendly competition. The GC2018 Relay will be the longest and the most accessible ever, not just passing through, but spending quality time in each community it visits. Starting on 13 March 2017 at Buckingham Palace, the Baton will travel on an epic 388-day journey through all nations and territories of the Commonwealth. The Queen’s Baton will arrive on the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018, where Her Majesty, or a representative, will remove the message from the Baton and read it aloud to officially open the Games.

The baton will be in Cairns between the 15th and 17th of March 2018 as it passes through the region including Gordonvale, Yarrabah, Babinda and Cairns. Mayor Bob Manning said the return of the Queen’s Baton Relay marked the countdown to the Commonwealth Games for the region and he was calling on residents to nominate as Batonbearers for the memorable event. “Cairns will host preliminary rounds of the men’s and women’s basketball as an event city for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, so the Queen’s Baton Relay holds extra significance for our city this time around,” Cr Manning said. “The Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay will be the longest and most accessible in history. It will travel through the entire Commonwealth for 388 days and cover 230,000 kilometres. “We’re delighted to be a part of an event that will showcase Cairns to the world and I encourage you to nominate a local legend you think deserves to be a Batonbearer, whether they’re an aspiring young person or someone who is already accomplished. “The Queen’s Baton Relay is a rare opportunity to shine a light on the people and places that help make our community truly great. “The Queen’s Baton Relay is not only a symbol of the Commonwealth Games, but an event that will connect Cairns with communities across Australia and the entire Commonwealth. “It’s a tradition that celebrates community pride and that shows us how important a role sport plays to build our great community, which is why we’ve chosen to embrace the Baton’s visit wholeheartedly. And it means Cairns will play an important part in the largest multi-sport event to be staged in Australia in a decade. “I for one can’t wait for the start of the QBR on Commonwealth Day, Monday 13 March, and to follow its journey around the world on its way to Cairns and the Opening Ceremony of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.” A Batonbearer will share the dream and carry with pride the spirit of the Games embracing the diversity and values of the Commonwealth. They will inspire others with their passion and commitment to sport and community and be excited to represent and promote the Commonwealth Games. GC2018 are looking for people to participate in the Queens Baton Relay who: •

Have achieved something extraordinary or inspired others to achieve something extraordinary; or

Have made a significant contribution to either sport, education, the arts, culture, charity or within their community; or

Have excelled, or aspire to excel athletically or personally; or

Contribute to a fun, friendly, vibrant and inclusive community;

Are at least 10 years old as at 25 December 2017; and

Are an Australian citizen or lawfully entitled to reside in Australia during the Relay period (25 December 2017 – 4 April 2018).

Nominations close on May 15, so lets get behind this great event and nominate a worthy Gordonvale resident.

Presbyterian Womens Fellowship Gordonvale Our Quilting and Craft group started in the late 1990s and has grown and adapted over the years. The group is affiliated with the Gordonvale Presbyterian Church; we feel the social side of ladies getting together for a cuppa and a chat is as equally important for our well-being as the craft. For some of our older members, it is a welcome respite from daily life as they may be retired and/or they may be caring for a family member, or they may just enjoy craft in general. We have donated many quilts, and knitted and crocheted blankets to local organisations such as nursing homes, hospitals and womens shelters. The first Monday of every month is dedicated to charity work. Occasionally it is arranged for someone outside the group to come and teach a class. All ladies are welcome to come and join us with any craft you enjoy, or we can teach you a new craft. We do patchwork, quilting, appliqué, knitting, crochet and much more. We meet every Monday morning at the Presbyterian Church Hall, Norman Street Gordonvale from 9 am till 12 noon and all are welcome. For enquiries call Bobbie on 0407901180 or Chrsitine on 0416314671

Gordonvale Police Charity Golf Day

The 10 year lease for the Gordonvale Men’s Shed has been finally registered and the guys have moved in to “The Shack” which was formally the old caretaker’s house at 20 Highleigh Road. Task number one was to give the place a good clean and then start to move it from habitable to functional with some Tender Loving Care. The Men’s Shed would like to acknowledge the fantastic support from the Cairns Regional Council and in particular those who had to ‘suffer’ some of our persistence to get it all up and going: Nikki, Liam, Katherine, Kylie and Matt. Without them keeping the process going our guys would still be just sitting around looking at each other in the car port. We have been sitting on a shed kit dismantled from in town for a few months now. Buying the kit was made possible by the cash support from our Foundation Sponsors: Cazalys Community Fund, Caltex Gordonvale, Great Northern Hotel, G & T Sales, State Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt, NQ Rural, Slingshot Auto and Cr Brett Moller. These cash contributions supported our Gambling Community Benefit Fund application that will result in The Workshop. The concrete slab where the shed is to be erected is curing. During The Workshop building process “The Shack” will open Monday to Wednesday mornings 8:00 – 12:00, starting Monday 3rd April with soft activities like cards, lunch, cleaning and painting. The mens shed is currently looking for some comfortable lounges and tables for playing cards and other activities.

Meningococcal Disease Immunisation Program In Queensland during 2016, there was a rise in numbers of meningococcal disease. Whereas most people fully recover, some who survive can develop long term health complications including limb deformity, skin scarring, deafness and possible loss of brain function. Some strains that have been on the rise in 2016 also have a higher death rate. The Queensland Government is offering free meningococcal ACWY vaccination to all Year 10 students through the School Immunisation Program. Information and permission forms for these vaccinations will be sent out early by Gordonvale High School in term 2. Year 10 vaccinations is planned for Thursday 15 June at Gordonvale State High School. Young people aged between 15 and 19 can also get a free vaccination from their doctor or immunisation provider. While the vaccine is provided free by the Government, the doctor may charge a consultation fee.

Council to Oppose New Gordonvale Police Station Location Council will object to the Queensland Government’s proposed location of the new Gordonvale Police Station, stating that it is inconsistent with future use and does not serve community interest. The station is proposed for Draper Road, which is zoned for emerging communities zoning. Council has deemed the development to be in conflict with the zoning and to be detrimental to the future of the town centre. “It takes a government service out of the town centre and placing it on the western side of the highway, impacting the integrity of the town centre and fragmenting local emergency services,” Mayor Bob Manning said. He said there had been little engagement with Council regarding the State Government’s preferred location. “Council is looking at economic development planning for the Gordonvale community,” Cr Manning said. “The State Government’s lack of consultation and regard for Council’s planning will impact on the outcomes of the plan.” Council has offered land on Sheppherd Street to the Queensland Government for a more appropriately located new Police station.

Talking Law With Brett Moller

I have mentioned previously that in the Standard Real Estate Institute Queensland (REIQ) Contract there are conditions that provide for the Buyer obtaining finance approval, and satisfactory building and pest inspections and Pool safety inspections. By having these conditions the Buyer has room within the Contract terms to make enquiries on necessary finance and loan conditions needed to complete the purchase and whether this is affordable, enquiries in respect to the state and condition of the dwelling and any Pest treatment or works that may be needed and enquiries around the pool safety certificate. If the Contract makes provision for these conditions then there is an obligation on the Buyer to take all reasonable steps in seeking the application for finance or obtaining the reports. Buyers need to be careful in nominating a preferred financier or finance amount in the finance condition contained in the Contract. There was a case in the District Court where a buyer sought finance from a bank other than the one nominated in the Contract and finance was declined. The Buyer terminated the Contract because they were unable to obtain finance from this alternate financier (bank). However the Seller took action against the Buyer alleging a breach of the finance clause and the Court held in the Seller's favour because the Buyer had not taken reasonable steps to obtain finance from the nominated financier in the Contract. The Buyer lost their deposit and were also responsible for costs and damages. A good process is for Buyers to get pre-approval first from a bank or a lender because you can't change Contract terms (unless by mutual agreement) after the Contract has been formed. As always this is a guide only and Buyers and Sellers should get their own independent advice prior to signing any Contract of Sale.

75th Anniversary Unveiling of the Memorial of the US Bomber Crash at Mt Bartle Frere Babinda at the Babinda Boulders. On Friday the 21st April 2017 at the Babinda Boulders a project supported by the Cairns Regional Council, The Babinda Chamber of Commerce Inc and the Babinda RSL and coordinated by Babinda local and now Darwin High School Principal Mr David Cannon saw the unveiling of a memorial recognising the crash of a US Bomber into Mt Bartle Frere and the story of the local community members that climbed the mountain to find the plane and recover the bodies of the US airman who perished that day 75 Years before, at almost the same time. Cr Brett Moller who opened the speeches to welcome everyone in attendance said it was a moving and respectful ceremony, well attended by over 250 local residents and visitors including the Consular General of the United States Rachel Cook, two US Marines stationed in Darwin and members of our local 51st battalion. "David Cannon is to be commended in researching and writing a book on this war time tragedy, detailing the airmen and their personal journey leading them to crashing on the mountain and then how the Babinda community rallied to find the wreckage and retrieve the bodies" said Councillor Moller. “The memorial project recognises the ultimate sacrifice the US airmen paid to protect their country and ours, how the young and older men in Babinda from all walks of life came together (as all other able body men were off to war) and faced challenging elements in thick rainforest, steep mountain ranges, leeches and rain to mount the search parties to go up the mountain." "The horrific scenes on discovering the crash and bodies and body bits, the stench of death, and then the pain staking task of respectful recovery, stayed painfully in these men's minds for all their time, without the benefit of trauma counselling but collectively etched in the fabric of what is the Babinda community. The families of those local men now have somewhere to go to also pay their respects and to remember" commented Councillor Moller

Council Conversations Well April has been a busy month, with school holidays, Easter, Anzac Day and short weeks, but your Cairns Regional Council has been busy on the ground undertaking and completing works in the community. A great outcome has been our partnership with the Queensland State Government “Works for Queensland Program” which saw new footpath laid from Muir Street, around Mill Street through to Church Street in front of St Michael’s Church, St Michaels Primary School and the Anglican Church. The other new footpath project I identified was at the Gordonvale Kindergarten in Moller Street. The new footpaths were laid during school holidays for minimum inconvenience to teachers, students and families and was a nice way for them to come back and start the term, with these new pieces of infrastructure in our local town. During the month I also undertook some consultation around new exercise equipment identified for Norman Park in the south east corner opposite the old Ambulance station. Whilst not budgeted for in Council’s capital works program I was able to allocate funds from my discretionary budget which will see the project completed before 30th June 2017. Anzac Day parades I was invited to attend at the Gordonvale High School, Babinda P-12 School and in the Gordonvale and Babinda communities were well attended and the Anzac Spirit shone through in our local schools and communities. An interesting tip bit I learnt through Anzac Day memorials is why are the Kangaroo and Emu on our Coat of Arms ? “It is commonly believed that the reason they are on the Coat of Arms is because they are two animals that are unable to walk backwards, signifying our aspiration and intent as a nation to always move forward”. Until next time stay safe and enjoy being part of our local community.
