ADVICE

Student Hacks By: Kyndall Porter

Do you despise math? I can promise you are not the only one who can’t stand math, subtraction was always a pain. No matter how high you get up in math there will always be a part of subtraction so there is a crazy hack that we have found to help you with large number subtraction. This hack does only work with four digit numbers. When you take two four digit numbers and go to subtract them instead of using the borrowing system you can subtract one from each number and you will still come up with the same number each time. This is a more efficient way to get the answer that you may need. This was is also way faster than trying to borrow. Borrowing can get very confusing and hard to understand but just subtracting one from each number it will give you the same answer.

Yes this only works with four digit numbers, but could really be a huge help with subtracting. Every once in awhile there will be the chance that you will have to remember Pi which seems easy but as the numbers keep going. There are many different ways that you could try to remember Pi with different rhymes or just trying to remember the numbers directly but a good way i found to remeber this is coming up with a rhyme that goes along with the numbers this way when you see the words you just count how many letters are in the word and then you will know what number comes next.

STAFF OPINION

teaches you perseverance which allows you to strive to be the best and to deal with and overcome failure. You learn and gain many important traits by participating in sports.

By: Brendan Durham

Playing sports is just fun and even addicting. Sports are very enjoyable to play and entertaining to watch. For me sports is the eighth wonder of the world. Even if you aren’t playing organized sports, playing sports with your friends just for fun is the best. I couldn’t tell you how many backyard football games my friends and I have had. You also make friends in sports that you will keep forever. Playing sports is a great way to meet new people.

In my opinion, sports are great in every aspect for the most part. Some people may think that sports are a waste of time, or a bunch of bologna. I’ve heard a multitude of people, even relatives and people close to me, that sports are a waste of time and that I, and that student athletes, could be doing something much more productive than just playing sports. I’ve been told that I should focus solely on my education and leave sports behind. “Brendan, you have too much ahead of you to be doing something that doesn’t matter and is as silly as playing sports. You should focus on getting ready for college not wasting your time playing sports. Sports won’t be with you forever.” That’s where they are wrong. Sports will always be a huge part of my life.

These naysayers don’t understand that sports is such a good way to take your mind off of things going on in your life. No matter whether your girlfriend or boyfriend recently broke up with you or if your dog just died, sports give you an outlet and allow you to take your mind off these things. Sports gives you an escape. In the 3 hours of practice or the 3 hours of a game, you can play the game you love and have fun doing it without anything else affecting you. It is like you are in a whole different world for the period of time you are participating in sports. In my experience, during football and baseball, games and practices, it gave me a chance to get rid of all the baggage and burdens of my personal life and go out and have fun. It also gave me the opportunity to better myself and the team. Sports are a way out of anything hindering you in life.

Sports also give you a way to express yourself and to showcase your talents. If you are good enough at sports, there is a chance you can play in college. This shows how sports can have a big impact on your life into adulthood. If you have enough talent, you can possibly get some, or all of your college paid for by receiving a sports scholarship. This could greatly benefit many student athletes, especially those who can’t afford college. Their gift of excelling in sports allows them to get an education that they most likely wouldn’t have had the chance to receive otherwise. This is a beautiful thing, really. If some athletes are extraordinarily gifted and have great potential, then maybe, just maybe, they could become professional athletes. This is a slim chance and a very select few make it to that level, but it can happen. Then sports become an occupation and I can’t think of a job i’d rather have than to be an athlete. Professional athletes get to play the sport they fell in love with as a kid and get paid millions for playing it. This goes to show how sports can pay you back for all the hard work that was put in and also how it can give you an income, an outstanding salary, to support yourself and your family.

Sports also teach you valuable traits that you will need through your adulthood, and need now, for that matter. In baseball and in football especially, I learned respect, responsibility, bravery, sportsmanship, courage, and many other vital components. Learning how to be a better teammate allowed me to put others’ needs before mine. This will directly translate to me being a husband and a father. I will sometimes have to put my family’s needs before mine, and sports taught me that. Sports will teach you how to overcome adversity, as well. I have faced just as much adversity as anybody, almost to the point where it was unfair, but it taught me to never quit and to never give up. I worked as hard as I possibly could and spent countless hours perfecting my craft. This taught me the value of work ethic and that if you put in the hard work, then you will usually become successful. This can sometimes depend on what you can’t control, though. Sometimes people work themselves extremely hard and don’t gain the rewards they deserve because they never get the chance. This is one rough spot in sports. Some mightily talented and hard working athletes are overlooked and fall through the cracks, which is very unfortunate. Sports also

Despite what some say, sports can have many positive effects on you. Sports are a really good way to get your mind off of things and are a good way out. They give you the chance to escape your reality. When you are playing sports, it is like you are in a whole different world. Everything that is going on in your life is rendered non-existent and becomes minute or invisible, in fact. Once you step on the field or the court, things things go by the wasteside and don’t matter anymore. Sports then consume your mind for as long as you are playing and this gives you a chance to get rid of the problems occurring in life. Sports also teach valuable traits and life lessons such as respect, courage, responsibility, perseverance, etc. These traits will be with you for the rest of your life and will help you become a better person and prepare you for the next stages of your life. Sports also give you a chance to meet new people and make friends. Playing sports also gives you the chance to get your college education paid for, at least some of it, if you are talented enough. If you are an absolute baller, you could possibly become a professional and playing sports could become your job. Sports can benefit you in many, many ways, and that is why I love them.

ENTERTAINMENT Book Spotlight

By: Kayla Buckner Once again I’ve fell in love with another Nicholas Sparks book. Rich in emotion and fueled with suspense, See Me reminds us that love is sometimes forged in the crises that threaten to shatter us . . . and that those who see us for who we truly are may not always be the ones easiest to recognize. It is another well written story about love, with a bit of mystery and suspense thrown into the mix. The story was a bit slow going at first; I believe this is his longest novel yet. It almost felt a bit too descriptive to start off, but when I got a little over halfway through I could hardly put it down. It ended up being just as lovely and thrilling as most all of his stories. Colin Hancock is doing as well as can possibly be expected. With a background marked by brutality and awful choices behind him and the threat of prison dogging his every move, he’s determined to walk a straight line. To Colin, that implies putting forth a concentrated effort resolutely toward his teaching degree and abstaining from everything that demonstrated ruinous in his before life. Helping himself day by day to remember his well-deserved lessons, the exact opposite thing he is searching for is a serious relationship. Maria Sanchez, the dedicated little girl of Mexican immigrants, is the photo of traditional accomplishment: with a degree from Duke Law School and work at a prestigious firm in Wilmington, she is a dark haired beauty with a seemingly flawless professional track record. And yet Maria has a traumatic history of her own, one that compelled her to return to her home town and left her questioning so much of what she once believed. A chance encounter on a rain swept road will alter the course of both Colin and Maria’s lives, challenging deeply held assumptions about each other and ultimately, themselves. As love unexpectedly takes hold between them, they dare to envision what a future together could possibly look like . . . until menacing reminders of events in Maria’s past begin to surface. As a series of threatening incidents wreaks chaos in Maria’s life, Maria and Colin will be tested in increasingly terrifying ways.

After being fined by the FCC, Tracy learns a simple lesson -- “if you pay some money afterwards, you can say whatever you want on TV.” Fun fact about the St. Patrick’s Day Parade: The first television coverage of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade grew unexpectedly out of local New York station WPIX’s effort to test a new camera and microphone on St. Patrick’s Day in 1949.

STUDENT LIFE

Teacher Spotlight

School, she teaches Nutrition and Wellness, Housing, Sewing, Child Development, and Family Living. When Kaitlyn came here as a student teacher she didn’t know much about the school, but she was open minded about it and excited because Reeds Spring is a smaller school than Nixa. Now that she’s been at Reeds Spring for over a year, she loves it. She says the co-workers and administration are wonderful and she loves the students that she comes across. When she was asked her most embarrassing moment while being at Reeds Spring, she had quite a story.

By: Rylee Olson This month’s teachers spotlight is Kaitlyn Green. Mrs. Green is twenty-three years old and was born on November 8th in Kansas City, Missouri. Kaitlyn Green has three younger siblings; Courtney is twenty, Emma is fifteen, and Rylie who is eleven. Kaitlyn grew up and went to school in Nixa, Missouri. During high school, Kaitlyn played basketball and track and was in many clubs. Kaitlyn participated in: FCA, FCCLA, Spanish club, and FBLA. . When she was younger she wanted to be in the WNBA, but then went into Dental Hygiene. Mrs. Green and her husband are Youth Pastors at a church in Ozark, Missouri. Kaitlyn likes to do crafting and decorating as hobbies, as well as shopping and eating. She also works out after school to stay in shape. Mrs. Green has a fear of bugs, any and all kind, and has a fear of public speaking. She is also afraid of not fulfilling her calling in life. She has no pets because she is allergic to fur. Any and all animal fur, even the hypoallergenic type, will cause an allergic reaction for her.

“It was my second day being a student teacher and I didn’t know I could use the staff bathroom, so I was using the same bathroom that students were and I got locked in the stall and the girls were trying to kick down the door and get me out and the bell had rung to go to class so I was late and it was just terrible.. It was my second day here as a student teacher!” If there is any teacher you would like to be recognized in the Pulse or if you have any suggestions on what information you would like to know about the teachers next time, email me at rolson@s.rs-wolves.com.

Mrs. Green graduated High School and used her A+ program money to go to OTC for 2 years, and then transferred to Missouri State; she didn’t play any sports like she did in High School, but she was an adult leader at her church and the Vice President of FCCLA. For Kaitlyn’s last semester of college, she was a student teacher for Mrs. Flippin at the Reeds Spring High School. When Mrs. Flippin went on maternity leave and decided to become a stay at home mom, Mrs. Green took over her teaching spot. Kaitlyn graduated Missouri State with a degree in Secondary Education and a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. Being a teacher at Reeds Spring High

so hard and made me feel so amazing and loved. I love you all so much. You all will forever hold a special place in my heart. And for the people who came and supported: thank you so much. You guys are so great and have furthered my dream and passion even more.” The passion contained by the cast for this play was truly amazing; along with the comradery formed throughout the few months that they have been working on their lines, as well as stage management. Sarah was very enthusiastic about the crew’s sense of one throughout the development of the entire performance, as were the other cast members.

School Play By: Christian Roston The Reeds Spring High School interpretation of the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz” was none other than an exciting adventure of theatrical performance. Starring Sarah Bishop as Dorothy Gale, the play followed a somewhat comedic plot. With twists and turns only the specialized actors and actresses could have provided. John Merritt, Blair Barnett, and Tommy Diem also did a wonderful job in producing their parts and forming it to their own unique personalities. Each adapting specialized voices to their own unique characters, they allowed their personalities to bleed through their voices, interactions, and personas. Tin man did an extraordinary job. Played onstage by Tommy Diem, the character was most accurately portrayed in every sense. Tommy’s dep voice and sullen attitude would make even the least of emotional people feel for him. Maybe even observe the fact that he didn’t have a heart. Tommy also added a wonderful voice to the songs sung in the play. In fact, all of the singers did an extraordinary job, all of the voices blended together in the music to create a wonderful symphony of sounds; I myself could not believe I was witnessing just a high school play. Their performance, especially the Tin Man’s, were extremely professional.

The play was adapted from the original Wizard of Oz, spanning every detail, from the design of the Tin Man down to the very last word. Director Nicole Harrell elaborated on her love for the story and movie in and of itself. “I just can’t get over how beautiful the Land of Oz is. If I was asked how many times I’d seen the movie I’d probably respond with “A lot”. However, I was afraid at the idea of losing my zeal towards the movie if I directed a play over it. However, I still find myself captivated by the beauty of Oz, and its way to captivate the human imagination. I’m blessed to have directed this and blessed by these kids.” Another great character throughout the play was Lion, played by Ramses Poole. Ramses gave almost a perfect persona of Lion in the original movie. With a quirky attitude and comedic relief throughout the play, Lion proved to be a spontaneous and instantaneous hit. One of the many attributes to Lion being so influential on every aspect of the play is Ramses himself. He has an extremely easy-going and naturally happy personality (though I wouldn’t say I believe he is a “scaredy cat”) I would say however, that he does possess many timid characteristics at times, which perfectly bled straight into the Lions stage persona. He was a certainly lovable character, and developed a healthy friendship with main character Dorothy. He allowed his lovable persona to enter the story almost as a meek house cat, showing wonderful character attributes. His passion was rivaled, I’d personally say anyway, by that of even the original lion in the original Wizard of Oz movie.

Scarecrow did an especially good job, the setup within the play for his character was perfect, in that the main characters Dorothy (played by Sarah) and Scarecrow (Played by Blair Barnett) are actually best friends in real life. Making this a dynamic duo of sorts that many people seemed to pick up on and enjoy. Speaking with Sarah after the play, she was very passionate about Dorothy Gale as a character. (She practiced her Judy Garland voice for many weeks leading up to the play.) She felt much intertwined with her as a person, even though Dorothy is indeed a fictional character. She made the statement: “Doing this play for four months, I fell in love with Dorothy gale. It has never happened to me before, falling in love with a character. But here I am, literally feeling like I am going to miss a fictional character so much. I am going to miss feeling like a little Kansas farm girl, missing Auntie Em and wanting to get home. I will miss the whole cast. You all worked

16

Other characters include Glenda played by Sara Moody, Trees played by a variety of different students, all with wonderful voices for the musical parts of course, Auntie Em played by Megan Dupas, and Dorothy’s Uncle played by John Merritt (who also happened to be playing the Wizard of Oz himself.) John is a very funny kind of guy with a smirk on his face, he portrays the wizard beautifully. Revealing his fake and ultimately flawed persona, he makes his classic final attempt to help Dorothy by taking her back to Kansas in his balloon, which he unfortunately drifts off back to Kansas without her. Dorothy does her best part in explaining her disappointment with the Wizard. The wicked with of the west is played beautifully by Raisa Hurtado, her scream was absolutely perfect for the roll. A very high pitched and bone chilling scream, she rocked the house with her blatant “witchyness”. (Although I must say my ears were sore after a couple screams). All in all, the play is a perfect ten. The entire cast should most certainly be commended for this valiant effort in portraying a timeless American classic. From the smallest parts, to the biggest roles: everyone involved in this production did a fantastic job, and here at Pulse magazine we look forward to seeing what they have in the future.

Political Corner

House press gaggle (basically a news briefing without any cameras, just audio), CNN, the New York Times, and many other were not allowed into the briefing room. While right leaning news agencies such as Breitbart, and (yes) Fox News were allowed inside. This is no doubting a major lawsuit between the Trump administration and one of the news outlets barred from entry at the White House brief room. Many political speculators doubt this was actually a decision of the president, rather a decision of his team of advisors, to which he has been becoming more closely associated with since he was elected. Which brings up something else:

By: Christian Roston

Boys were getting the “Ban” back together! After much controversy and legal action amongst the federal court system, President Trump’s travel ban on the seven predominantly Muslim countries is being revised. The revised version reportedly allowing green card holders and US Citizens to pass through the borders with ease, also specifically ensuring that no one is held up at an airport or detained, once they reach the United States. But the question is, will the new order meet constitutional requirements and satisfy the immigrant rights community? The first order was blocked mostly due to the reason that it violated the constitutional rights of green card holders, not allowing permanent residents of the US back into the country if they were travelling from one of the countries on the ban. Courts in Washington and Minnesota State have even ruled that immigrants have a right to challenge the constitutionality of the ban. IN short, even foreigners from outside the US have a limited right to file suit in US courts. SO even though the order may, and probably will pass through, there’s an even better chance that immigrants could sue the federal government over the ban. SO in short, things are going to be messy, to say the least.

The New Cold War: What you really need to know. 1. No, they didn’t actually “hack the election” they just influenced it. Although, Trump’s campaign team DID have some quite sketchy and sometimes plain odd communication with Russian president Vladimir Putin. Which brings on our next fact: 2. General Michael Flinn WAS illegally speaking with Russian diplomats. And on top of that he publicly admitted to lying to VP Biden in a phone interview…odd.

3. The Republican party is divided over the issue, to say the least. To the point that many GOP congressman are calling for a special prosecutor and full scale investigation into Trumps administration and its ties with Russia, as well as Putin’s ties with Trump.

President Trump ripped into the FBI on Friday as well, taking to twitter stating that they could have a devastating effect on U.S. FIND NOW”— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump). This is one of many federal agencies that the newly sworn in POTUS has degraded so far over the first month of his presidency.

We get it Mr. President, you hate the News.

the political and social reformist acceptance speech: “All you people out there who feel there’s no mirror for you, that your life is not reflected,” Jenkins began. “The Academy has your back, the ACLU has your back, we have your back, and for the next four years we will not leave you alone, we will not forget you.” McCraney added: “This goes out to all those black and brown boys and girls and non-gender-conforming, who don’t see themselves, we’re trying to show you, you and us. So thank you, thank you. This is for you.” A sincere advocation for the LGBTQ community, as well as an obvious slam towards President Trump.

We all thought it may happen, and it did. The Oscars conveyed obvious political messages Sunday that no one can really ignore. If Hollywood has taught anything to the American public, it’s that award season means there’s a lot to say about Donald Trump and his new administration. Host Jimmy Kimmel set a stage for an overly political Oscar Sunday (but by no means the first). During his opening speech when he reference Ivanka Trump’s struggling clothing line, her dad’s bowel activity, and President Trump’s tweets about how Meryl Sheep is completely overrated. The political party got underway when Ruth Negga, Karlie Kloss, and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mom showed up on the red carpet wearing blue ribbons broadcasting their support for the American Civil Liberties Union. ON top of that Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, in fact boycotted the entire event on behalf of his country making the statement “My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of the other six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S. Dividing the world into the ‘us’ and ‘our enemies’ categories creates fear—a deceitful justification for aggression and war. These wars prevent democracy and human rights in countries that have themselves been victims of aggression. Filmmakers can turn their cameras to capture shared human qualities and break stereotypes of various nationalities and religions. They create empathy between us and others. An empathy we need today more than ever.”

There is no doubt a sincere political climate among Hollywood today. But unfortunately, this year’s Oscar has been a historic low for the show in terms of viewership. This follows a three year trend, showing the academy’s shedding around ten million viewers each year. Not to mention, at nearly four hours long: this year’s show clocked in as the longest in a decade. This mostly has to do with ABC acquiring the rights to the show until 2028. Nonetheless, the drama and (what sometimes feels like) political craziness will continue on.

And lastly, when the film “Moonlight” won best picture (after a misreading of the winner) Barry Jenkins (wearing a blue ribbon) and Terrell Mcraney (wearing a red ribbon showing support for the fight against aids) delivered quite

Senioritis

Types of senioritis

By: Kayley Harrison

Lately, there has been a common misconception involving senioritis, and about what it really is. Senioritis isn’t like the flu. You aren’t going to contract senioritis and only have it for a day or two until you turn in your assignments. No, once you’ve contracted it, you’re stuck with it until you’ve received the cure. Unfortunately, the only known cure so far is graduation.

The end of the school year is quickly approaching, finals and EOC’s are just around the corner, and so is graduation. On May 11th our graduating senior class of 2017 will be receiving their diplomas, and saying good bye to some of their friends and teachers, before they leave to go and start living a life of their own. Several of our seniors will be moving on to college, growing up, and starting their own career. Some of the lucky few will already have the next few years of their life set up and planned out. Some may not have a plan yet, but they’re remaining calm, doing what’s necessary, and getting the help that they need to make a plan of their own. The rest have no idea they’re going to do, and may’ve already hit the panic button. Those who hit the panic button often suffer from a common dysfunction amongst seniors called senioritis, and the only known cure is graduation.

From my experience, Teachers will point out all of the things that a senior will do, and diagnose them with senioritis; therefore making it makes it seem like there are many forms. However, if think about it, you can boil it down to two main classifications:

1. The more commonly diagnosed procrastinators. Symptoms may include the following:

What is senioritis?

Senioritis isn’t to be taken lightly. It can be easily contracted by many things. Like hanging around other procrastinators, becoming so enthralled with your Netflix watch-list to the point where you don’t feel obligated to leave your TV in the morning to go to school. Others may contract senioritis by often thinking about college or their near future, or feeling pressured to become the absolute best. It may seem like it’s not a big deal right now, you may even think it’s amusing to some extent, but it will affect you in the long run. Whether or not it’ll help or harm your future is entirely up to you, and how you decide to spend your time wisely in and outside of class.

• • • •

They put every assignment off until the last second, or won’t turn in anything that won’t affect their grade. They may put forth only a minuscule amount of effort into studying for a test. They’ll constantly let themselves get distracted to the point where they’ll get nothing done, whether it’s in or outside of class. They may settle for any grade as long as they aren’t failing. Unless they’re failing a class, they may skip school and stay home.

2. The seniors that stress over EVERYTHING. Symptoms may include the following: •

Seniors that suffer from Senioritis may experience any of the following symptoms: 1. A frequent urge to look at the time. 2. Loss of interest in classes that the infected student would normally enjoy. 3. A sudden drop in grades. 4. Difficulty getting out of bed in the morning. 5. Constantly complaining about lack of sleep. 6. Constantly complaining about lack of coffee. 7. Constantly coming to classes late because they’ve spent too much time and money at the local coffee shop, due to their lack of energy and sleep. 8. Suddenly becoming agitated, or annoyed by anything; despite how miniscule it may seem.

When working on a big project that may be due weeks from now, these seniors will feel obligated to get that project done as quickly as possible.

• They’ll thoroughly study for a test, a week or more in advance, and for hours on end. • They may seem more irritable in school or during class, due to the fact that they refuse to allow themselves to be distracted. • The average of these seniors will settle for nothing short of a 75 on every assignment, so as not to fail a class. • May skip school from time to time due to excessive amounts of stress, or to ensure that they won’t be distracted by their surroundings in the school setting.

FEATURE Treatments for senioritis While there is only one cure for senioritis, there are in fact many treatments for senioritis. It may seem hard at first, but the key to hard work is a little dedication, and determination. Even if some of these seem stupid, or time consuming, these treatments can and will work as long as you put forth the effort to let it work. Some of the treatments include the following. • Set some goals for yourself- Start with smaller goals at first, then use those smaller goals to work your way up to the bigger picture. Sometimes you may have to write out what it will take for you to achieve each goal that you’ve set for yourself.

• Don’t let yourself fall behind- The more you put off your work, the more it begins to pile up. The more work that there is, the more you won’t want to do it. Often times, whenever people have a lot on their plates, they tend to get stressed out. • STUDY, STUDY, STUDY- if you don’t understand a topic that you have to work on for class, then study! If you’re bad at studying by yourself, then buddy up! Still can’t study? Then get a tutor. There’s no shame in being tutored by someone else. Even if there were, sometimes you have to set aside your pride in order to do what needs to be done. • Don’t forget to take a break- if you’re spending every second of every day with your nose stuck in a text book, then you’re going to end up driving yourself insane. Even if you’re on a crunch for time, take a break. That doesn’t mean that you have to take the whole day off, or go out with your friends for several hours. All you have to do is go to your kitchen and get a cup of coffee, go for a short walk around your neighborhood, or even take a power nap. • Keep in mind what you’re working towardswhether or not your future includes going on to college, keep in mind that no matter what your career plan is, the jobs or schools that you’ll be applying for will be looking for references. If you didn’t apply yourself in high school, then it’s safe to assume that you won’t be getting any decent feedback on your references. So always, always, ALWAYS, apply yourself; no matter how silly your assignment is. Because your employer will be looking for someone who is dedicated to their work, and gets each

task done properly, on time, every time.

The Cure Finally, while there are many treatments to help you tolerate your senioritis, there is only one cure that will permanently rid you of your senioritis. It’s graduation. For some of you, graduation may seem so far out of your grasp. Some of you may have considered dropping out, because you may not have time to work on your classes, you have things at home or work that require your attention more than your classes, maybe you even think that school is stupid or a waste of time. You have your reasons; but regardless of they are, there will never be a good enough excuse for not being able to graduate. We are lucky enough to be provided a general education. If you believe that you can’t, just know that no one is withholding that right from you other than yourself. You can accomplish anything as long as you believe that you can. If you tell yourself that you can’t achieve your goal because it’s too hard, or that you’re not able to do what you need to do because you’re lacking in the skills; just know that you can’t and won’t accomplish anything if you believe that you have a limit. Instead of feeding yourself lies, or making excuses for yourself, try telling yourself that you’re doing a good job and that you can do this. If you have a mountain of homework to do, and it’s due at the end of the week; then rather than thinking to yourself that it’s impossible, saying that it can’t be done, and just giving up; just try. Tell yourself that you can do it and get as much of it done as you can. Even if you can’t get it all done on time, you can tell yourself confidently that you at least tried, and that you tried your hardest; because that’s what colleges want to see. When you send in an application for a job, or a college, they want to see that you’re a hard working student who’s dedicated to their classes. Success is only available to those who try. Despite whether or not this may sound like a clichéd motivational Disney quote, you can only do what you believe you can do. Don’t let something like senioritis become something that stands in the way of your success.

Damage and why your Hair Won’t Grow

By: Amanda Pryor

Let’s go back to the idea of treating our hair like a temple. This means respecting it, and realizing the harm you cause to your hair every day. Split ends are a result of four different types of damage or breakage in hair; mechanical, physical, internal, and environmental. Don’t be fooled by the name because splitting can happen anywhere in the hair shaft. Physical and mechanical are a result of rough housing with your hair. For example, plowing through your wet hair that has tangles in it with a paddle brush, or ripping your hair out of a hair tie. Heat styling tools and blow drying is also physical breakage that will cause split ends. Flat irons are probably the worst. You are putting your hair between two hot metal plates that heat up to around 400 degrees. Then pressing down very hard, sometimes even creating steam. You are frying your hair in this process, and also ruining any natural curl pattern you might have. On top of that, your already dry ends are getting even crispier, which in turn breaks your weak ends off. A lot of people wonder why they cant grow their hair past a certain length. A major reason that happens is because your ends keep breaking off at the bottom because they aren’t strong/ hydrated enough. To keep this from happening, remember to get regular trims. Hair dressers always say to get trims if you want to grow your hair, this isnt a sales pitch. Your hair grows at the root, but your ends will break off if they aren’t healthy, despite how fast your hair is growing. Get rid of your dead ends. Environmental breakage is when the elements take a toll on your hair; a good example of this is dryness from the hot summer sun, or wind blowing through your hair and creating tangles. Internal damage is when you aren’t eating enough nutritious foods. Just how your skin, nails, and physique are a result from how your eating, so is your hair! A good balanced diet will for sure also help in maintaining a healthy head of hair.

In a lot of families, it is not uncommon to hear the phrase, “Treat your body like a temple.” I use this phrase when referencing to our hair as well! Treat your locks like a temple! You will be happy you did once you start seeing a difference in the health and growth of your hair. By treating your hair like a temple, I mean that you’re taking into consideration a various amount of variables that play a role in how well your hair is responding to the care you’re giving it.

Shampoo & Conditioner Washing your hair is a major part of your hair routine, so lets go over that first. Our skin contains sebaceous glands that are most abundant on our face and scalp. These glands naturally produce sebum, which is the oil on our scalp that makes our hair look greasy. Although it may look unattractive, sebum is actually so important for our hairs overall health. This natural oil keeps our hair moisturized, and seals the strands cuticle to make our hair stronger and prevent breakage or damage. The whole reason we wash our hair is to rid our scalp of this grease. This is fine, because we don’t want to look unhygienic but try to cut back on how often you are washing your hair. Over washing will strip your hair of all of these natural oils on your scalp which in turn will lead to very dry, very dull and brittle hair. You can use dry shampoo in between washes to keep your hair looking refreshed. Its important to brush your hair during this time also, to distribute the sebum to the ends of your hair that probably needs the oil the most. When picking a shampoo, stay away from shampoos that contain sulfates and parabens. These chemicals are super common but are also very damaging. Sulfates are closely related to salt, which is why when you use a shampoo that has sulfates in it you’re just drying the dog crap out of your hair. This could be why someone might be experiencing a lot of frizz. When you do find a high quality sulfate and paraben free shampoo, focus on scrubbing your roots mostly. You don’t want to dry out your ends more than you have to. This leads us to conditioner, the Holy Grail that most people find to be their life line. I can see that view point; conditioner does smooth and create shine. All for the wrong reasons though. These lower end conditioners contain a lot of silicon that is actually coating your hair. So yes your hair may feel softer, but that’s only because you have an artificial coating over every one of your hair shafts. It might be more expensive to buy a higher quality product, but you get what you pay for and your hair is in jeopardy. When you condition your hair, be sure to focus the product on the most damaged and most dry part of your hair which is your ends. You don’t want to contradict the shampoo job you just did on your roots and put

NFL Combine By: Brendan Durham

Top prospects competed and ran drills at NFL Combine from March 3rd to March 6th. Various players from different position groups ran 40 yard dashes, benched press, tested their vertical jump, broad jump, and agility, and ran drills that could be applied directly to in game situations. Many NFL coaches and scouts were in attendance to evaluate all of these players. These players showcase their skills and many people enjoy watching. Arguably the favorite most watched event is the 40 yard dash. It is enjoyable watching athletes show their blazing speed and to watch people try and break the record. The record was held by running back, Chris Johnson, from Eastern Carolina University. He ran a marvelous 4.24 at the 2008 NFL Combine. This record held up for 9 years until this year’s combine. John Ross, a wide receiver from Washington, broke his record. He ran a 4.22 second 40 yard dash. He was cooking.

300,000 pennies By:Kayla Buckner

Nick Stafford owes $1,005 to pay a sales tax of $3,000 on two new cars. Stafford paid the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles with 300,000 pennies that weighed a total of 1,600 pounds. The pennies filled five wheelbarrows. He also paid eleven people $10 an hour to help him break open rolls of pennies Stafford was upset with the DMV because its employees would not give him the phone numbers to nine local offices. When he called with the request, Stafford’s call was repeatedly rerouted to a call center in Richmond.Stafford simply wanted to know which of his four houses he should list when licensing his son’s new car, the Bristol Herald Courier reported. He called the Lebanon DMV but was routed to Richmond. After he filed a Freedom of Information Act to get the Lebanon DMV number and called it, he was told the number was not for public use. Frustrated, he kept calling the number until employees answered his question. Stafford then decided he wanted the phone numbers of nine other DMV offices, and he filed suit to obtain them. The suit was dismissed by the judge when the state gave Stafford the phone numbers.

There was one problem with this. Adidas offered John Ross an island that is valued around $1 million if he broke the record, that is, if he wore their cleats. He recently signed a deal with Nike and was wearing Nike cleats when he broke the record so the offer went down the drain. When asked why he didn’t wear Adidas cleats, Ross said, “Well I can’t swim that well.” At least he’s not too upset about it seemingly. After all, he just broke the NFL Combine 40 yard dash record.

LIFESTYLE Lethal Injection By: Rylee Olson

According to Governor Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, 8 men are scheduled to be executed by a lethal injection; in just a period of 10 days. For this process to work in the most unpainful way possible, they first give an injection which is an anesthetic, this helps to anesthetize the inmate. Then there is the paralytic injection, this is to keep the inmate from flailing around, the drug used for this pancuronium bromide. Lastly, is the “cardiac arrest”, which initially is to stop the heart. When execution was popular, they used a drug called Sodium Thiopental as the anesthetic drug, but the only company that made it in the United States, stopped making it. So the United States went to European countries and asked to use it, but they said no, as we would be using it for execution. Since the United States can’t use the Sodium Thiopental as the anesthetic, the United States is using Midazolam, which is a drug to help treat anxiety, in 3 executions the Midazolam didn’t help correctly, that the patients were gasping, snorting, choking, and one inmate was even speaking. This execution process is supposed to be a painless and process, but since the drug combinations aren’t causing the inmates to react how they were supposed to, there are questions as to whether it is going against constitutional terms with cruel and unusual punishment. This being said, Capital punishment is legal in 32 states, Arkansas and Missouri being two of those states, so of course this is going to raise some protests as to whether this whole execution process is constitutional or not. “As required by law, I have set the execution dates for the eight convicted of capital murder,” the Arkansas governor said in a statement sent to CNN on Thursday. “This is based upon the Attorney General’s referral and the exhaustion of all appeals and court reviews that have been ongoing for more than a decade. “This action is necessary to fulfill the requirement of the law, but it is also important to bring closure to the victims’ families who have lived with the court appeals and uncertainty for a very long time.”

Bank The Green Sea Turtle By: Christian Roston

Surgeons in Bangkok removed 915 coins from the belly of a 25 year old sea turtle, ironically named “bank”, who was fed over 11 pounds of coins by tourists who believed in the old Thai legend that throwing change on a sea turtle will undoubtedly bring the best of luck. Usually a green sea turtle has a lifespan of about 80 years, however this is a highly endangered species, and the coins were cracking her shell, causing a life threatening infection. Five surgeons from Chulalongkorn University’s veterinary faculty patiently removed the coins over four hours while “Bank” was under general anesthesia.

The conglomeration of coins was way too large to remove through the small incision they made, so it had to be taken out slowly, one coin at a time. Many of the coins had either corroded or partially dissolved “The result is satisfactory. Now it’s up to Bank how much she can recover,” Pasakorn Briksawan, one of the surgical team. Bank will be on an al liquid diet for the next two-three weeks. The turtle was brought to the hospital by the country’s navy, who found her ailing in her seaside hometown. It wasn’t until after a very detailed scan of the turtle that the veterinarians discovered the morbidly intrusive issue. The turtles condition was unlike anything they had ever witnessed in their professional careers “I felt angry that humans, whether or not they meant to do it or if they did it without thinking, had caused harm to this turtle,” said Nantarika Chansue. The Thai media began making the turtle’s story public last month, after she had been captured and delivered to the surgeons. In response to her condition, the public began raising money to pay for her surgery. Around 15,000 baht ($428) in donations were raised by the public.
