LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

reetings, Fellow Members!

I hope each of you had a wonderful summer and enjoyed the many offerings and amenities of our wonderful Club!

As of the due date for submission of this article for publication, we are just two days away from Wally Smith’s last meeting of the Board of Governors. Afterwards, a dinner party (and roast) will be held in the Missouri Room to celebrate Wally’s long and successful tenure leading the Missouri Athletic Club. We again thank Wally for his service and wish Wally and his family all the best as they begin their new chapter.

On the leadership transition front, I hope many of you have been able to meet Chip Misch, our new GM/COO. For those who have not, Chip has been very present and visible around the Club so I trust you will be able to connect with him very soon. It is vitally important to our Club that the GM transition be a successful one. The Board and I have been very pleased with the transition thus far and how quickly Chip has assumed his new role. Wally and Chip have both been extraordinarily professional during this process and it is sincerely appreciated.

At the upcoming August Board of Governors meeting, the Board will consider for approval the budget for the next fiscal year, commencing Sept. 1.

As previewed in my article last month, the Club has not been immune to inflation and increased costs of operations. Budgeting throughout these uncertain times is and has been more difficult than normal. And though the overall balance sheet of the Club is sound, there are a few financial realities that have informed budget discussions. Payroll expenses have increased this year over last year by 17.5%. Costs of operating our Club, including such things as medical and business insurance premiums and non-durable goods, have increased by 16.25%. (And we know some of these costs will increase further this coming fiscal year.) While departmental operating revenues also increased over last year by 16.0%, membership dues and fees income — the key source of Club revenue — only increased by approximately 8.3%. Further, despite best budgeting efforts in recent years, dues increases have simply not kept up with inflation and our increased costs of operation, which compounded the impact of the delta between our revenue and expenses.

It is important to point out that underlying the entire budget discussion is the continued and increased focus on the Club’s Mission “to create extraordinary experiences in all aspects of club life in the spirit of excellence, service, and tradition.” In this regard, some of the assumptions that drove the coming year’s budget are as follows:

F Elevating member experience (including improved access control to both Clubhouses).

F Enhancing Club standards and service through a staff training program — created, delivered, and monitored by a new dedicated training manager.

F Improving consistency in products and service delivery.

F Boosting usage of all Club amenities through an increase in membership count and heightened Member

satisfaction with service, dining, and other programs (supported by elevated marketing).

F Increasing and monitoring member confidence in the Club’s offerings - member confidence being critical to increased usage, as is value in programs, menus, and services offered.

F Augmenting the West Clubhouse poolside bar and food experience next summer, through improved bar and poolside dining reconfiguration, menu offerings, entertainment, and marketing.

F Investing in capital improvements centered on the member experience — new cardio equipment, elevated fixtures and furnishings in fitness and the dining areas, and a “soft fixtures” upgrade to The Stan Musial Grille.

In summary, the next budget must be responsive and align the appropriate and necessary revenues with the increased costs of operations, all while balancing these fiscal needs with our Club’s Mission, as well as recognizing and addressing the Club’s capital needs. Also, in summary, it is important to keep in mind and restate that the Club is in a strong overall financial position. The Board of Governors is committed and accountable to keeping it that way.

Finally, the budgeting process in this climate has not been an easy task. Thanks are due to Chip, Wally, our CFO Pam Roth and her team, our Treasurer Mark McClanahan, the Finance Committee, and of course the Board of Governors.

Now, moving on to some more fun MAC news. On Sunday, Aug. 20, I had the privilege of attending the yearly MAC Employee Appreciation Event (which doubled this year as a Wally retirement party), starting with a barbeque at the Sportsman’s Grill and then on to the Brewhouse at Ballpark Village to watch the Cardinals play the Mets and further socialize. The Cardinals won the game that day too (which has happened a lot less this year, so it was a nice change). It was great to celebrate and enjoy the day with our great employees and their families. We are very lucky to have such a dedicated and loyal group of employees. I encourage members to take the time, when possible, to show appreciation to our employees. It matters. It continues to surprise me how many individuals it takes, in so many different positions, to make our Club operate smoothly from day to day.

At the end of this month, the Club will wrap up “Foundations’ Month” with the annual MAC Sports Foundation Golf Tournament at Glen Echo Country Club. The event is again a sellout and promises to be an enormous success. Thanks to Past President Bugh for once again taking the lead in organizing the tournament and serving as Event Chair, as well as to Katie Maurer and her team for coordinating all the logistics. The proceeds from the tournament will be directed to the MAC Sports Foundation.

See you around the Club!

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

The first month at the MAC has been all that I had hoped and anticipated it would be –meeting many of you at the Downtown and West Clubhouses, as well as spending time with the team of employees, focused on gaining insights into what drives the operations of the Missouri Athletic Club! Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.

In looking ahead, I am mindful of the important work that has been done over the past ten years by the management team with the support and guidance of the Board of Governors. The Mission and Vision will continue to serve as the driving influences in all we do, building upon the excellent reputation and traditions of the MAC. I am particularly drawn to the rich history of this fine Club and the generations of families that have been a part of its 120-year history. My plan is to pick up where Wally Smith left off – continuous improvement focused on the member experience and the commitment and development of our outstanding team of employees.

The MAC is a private Club. My initial focuses will incorporate this principle into every element of

what we do going forward. The best private clubs are defined by their membership and outstanding personalized service. I look forward to working with management in defining and embracing – better – at all levels. In the coming months, I plan to expand on specific insights and initiatives relating to operational enhancements driven to elevate the membership experience. Continuous improvement is an ongoing process, but I am optimistic you will notice the adjustments along the way.

The calendar of events for September is full of many opportunities to maximize your member experience at the MAC! Please take the time to review all that is planned for your enjoyment.

It is a privilege to serve as your next COO and General Manager, and I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

Very best regards,

6 F CHERRY DIAMOND

MAC MEMBER Spotlight

The MAC and McKnight Place Assisted Living & Memory Care Share a United Sense of Purpose

Jeff Leonard, an esteemed member of the MAC, has spent six impactful years serving as the Director of Facilities for McKnight Place Assisted Living & Memory Care, recently named one of US News & World Report’s best assisted living and best memory care facilities. His two-year journey as an MAC member has been a testament to his commitment to excellence and his dedication to his profession and community.

“I’ve been around The Gatesworth’s campus since its existence,” Leonard said, reflecting on his early connection to the community.

In 1988, when Jeff was eight, his father worked for the company that built The Gatesworth building at One McKnight Place. Subsequently, Leonard’s father took on the Director of Operations role, personally overseeing its management and eventually becoming a co-owner.

“As a teenager, I worked at the building doing construction, serving in the dining room, and taking out the trash,” Leonard said as he recounted his youthful engagement.

Higher education beckoned, and Leonard pursued his studies at Missouri S&T in Rolla and earned a degree in Engineering Management. This educational foundation solidified his expertise, and now as the custodian of the community’s infrastructure, Leonard orchestrates an intricate dance of building maintenance, engineering, exterior landscaping, and enhancements tailored to residents’ preferences.

“We are considered 5-star senior living communities and offer independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care,” Leonard said.

The Gatesworth Communities are locally owned, and the owners’ office is on-site. Leonard said they care about each one of their employees, of which The Gatesworth Communities has 600.

“Their care and passion for the culture here continues to this day. It’s a nice environment for the employees, so they stay around. A lot of our employees have been at The Gatesworth Communities for 20 to 30 years, and in this industry, it’s very important to minimize turnover,” he said.

Leonard has always known about the Missouri Athletic Club from family friends, but his own family was not a part of it as he grew up.

“I love the MAC’s social aspect, their athletics and the sense of community. There are just endless activities,” Leonard said. “My wife and I are in a phase where we can use it for ourselves, go to the fitness facilities, the classes, and our children, an 8-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl, can have a good time too.”

Jeff’s older brother Chris also works for The Gatesworth and is an MAC Member. From a professional standpoint, the MAC has seamlessly woven itself into Leonard’s network, fostering connections that extend far beyond its walls.

“From a business standpoint, being part of the MAC is invaluable,” Leonard said. “I’ve met so many people who have a connection to McKnight Place Assisted Living & Memory Care. Whether it’s people who are a part of one of the vendor companies we use, or people who have a family member who lives at one of The Gatesworth Communities.”

Through his MAC membership, Leonard has met other members who have relatives in their 90s who have needed to move into an assisted living community. He was able to help them transition to McKnight Place Assisted Living & Memory Care.

“In just my two short years as an MAC member, I’ve started building relationships that absolutely benefit The Gatesworth Communities,” Leonard said.

A shared sense of purpose unites the MAC and McKnight Place Assisted Living & Memory Care.

Leonard’s parting sentiment encapsulates his core philosophy: “Caring for our residents is the number one priority.”

MAC BOOK CLUB

On Thursday, Sept. 14, the Book Club turns its attention to the Great War as Jim Gallen leads a discussion of The Great Halifax Explosion by John U. Bacon.

After steaming out of New York City on Dec. 1, 1917, laden with a staggering 3,000 tons of TNT and other explosives, the munitions ship Mont-Blanc fought its way up the Atlantic coast through waters prowled by enemy U-boats. As it approached the lively port city of Halifax, Mont-Blanc’s deadly cargo erupted with the force of 2.9 kilotons of TNT. The ship was vaporized in one-fifteenth of a second; a shockwave leveled the surrounding city. Next came a 35-foot tsunami. Most astounding of all, however, were the incredible tales of survival and heroism that soon emerged from the rubble.

On Oct. 12, Governor Adrian Di Bisceglie will guide the Club through The Watermen: The Birth of American Swimming and One Young Man’s Fight to Capture Olympic Gold by Michael Loynd.

In the early twentieth century, few Americans knew how to swim, and swimming as a competitive sport was almost unheard of. That is until Charles Daniels took to the water. On the surface, young Charles had it all: high-society parents, a place at an exclusive New York City prep school, and summer vacations in the Adirondacks. But the scrawny teenager suffered from extreme anxiety thanks to a sadistic father who mired the family in bankruptcy and scandal before abandoning Charles and his mother altogether. His only source of joy was swimming. But with no one to teach him, he struggled with technique — until he caught the eye of two immigrant coaches hell-bent on building a U.S. swim program that could rival the British Empire’s seventy-year domination of the sport.

Set in the early days of a rapidly changing twentieth century, The Watermen — a term used at the time to describe men skilled in water sports—tells an engrossing story of grit, the growth of a major new sport in which Americans would prevail, and of a young man’s determination to excel.

F 1903: Amidst St. Louis’ rapid growth and the grandeur of the World’s Fair, the Missouri Athletic Club was born. Housed in the Boatmen’s Building, the Club featured a state-of-the-art basement swimming pool and became a hub for boxing, swimming, billiards, and gymnastics.

F 1904 Olympics: The Club played a significant role in the 1904 Olympics, with member athletes like Joe Forshaw, A.M. Goessling, and H.C. Grote representing the United States in various events.

THE 1910s: RISING FROM ASHES

F 1914: Tragedy struck as a devastating fire ravaged the Club, leaving it in ruins. The Club reemerged as the Missouri Athletic Association, signaling a broader focus beyond athletics.

F 1916: After reconstruction, the MAC triumphantly reopened as the Missouri Athletic Association, drawing 5,000 attendees to its open house. Despite challenges posed by World War I, the association honored its members who served and sacrificed, solidifying its legacy as a resilient and community-focused institution.

F 1930: Amid the Great Depression, the Club adapted by changing its name from the Missouri Athletic Association to the original Missouri Athletic Club, employing membership drives, and implementing a robust plan for stability.

F 1939: The introduction of the sophisticated “Rendezvous” room with air conditioning in 1934 and an elegant marble-adorned lounge showcased the Club’s commitment to refinement and member experiences.

THE 1940s: PATRIOTISM AND PROGRESS

F 1940: During World War II, the MAC actively contributed to the war effort by dedicating space to fitness programs and establishing an in-house blood bank.

F Traditional events like the Victory Banquet and the Hall of Health Outing persisted, showcasing the Club’s resilience.

F 1945: Post-war, the MAC’s dynamic athletic department, highlighted by the rise of golf, sustained its commitment to member experiences.

THE 1920s: EMBRACING GROWTH AND EXCITEMENT

F 1920: The vibrant ‘Roaring Twenties’ spirit was epitomized by a grand dinner dance attended by 900 members.

F 1926: The Club expanded its sports offerings, introducing new activities like volleyball and squash. The MAA pioneered volleyball leagues and embraced squash under Athletic Director Carl O. Bauer’s guidance.

F 1927: Notably, Club members Harry Hall Knight and Harold M. Bixby played pivotal roles in funding Charles A. Lindbergh’s “Spirit of St. Louis” plane, which earned Lindbergh a lifetime membership for his historic flight, further solidifying the Club’s connection to monumental events.

Coach Maggie’s Fruit & Vegetable of the Month

included in a well-balanced diet, high-fiber foods like figs can help you feel full between meals and reduce overeating. As a result, they may help boost the weight loss process. Helps improper digestion: Figs have a digestive enzyme named Ficin that works efficiently along with other enzymes secreted by your digestive tract to digest food quickly. A healthy digestive system is the key to losing weight, reducing belly fat and helping keep you regular.

Great substitute to sugar: If you have a sweet tooth, you know how tough it is to shun sugar completely while on your weight loss journey. The idea is not to give up sugar but to find healthy substitutes for it. Figs are sweet in taste, and they can easily control your craving for something sweet. Figs help you keep satiated for longer and will help to keep you away from grabbing other sweets.

VEGETABLE OF THE MONTH: SWEET POTATOES

Serving size: 4oz to 5oz

Sweet potatoes are vegetables, but on my plan, they are a starch and one of my favorite foods to add to your diet whether you are looking to lose weight or maintain your weight.

High in fiber: Sweet potatoes are high in fiber, slowing the release of carbohydrates during digestion. This helps to stabilize blood sugar, which is important for weight loss and weight maintenance. Be sure to eat the skin as it will increase the health benefits and the fiber content. Fiber is also needed to help regulate your cholesterol.

FRUIT OF THE MONTH: FIGS

Serving size: 2 to 3 medium per day

Figs are high in fiber and low in calories, which makes them an ideal snack when you are on your weight loss journey. When

Helps your metabolism: Figs are high in minerals like calcium, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, copper and magnesium, as well as vitamins A and B which are important in improving metabolism.

Vitamins & minerals: Sweet potatoes are a natural source of the antioxidant beta carotene and are especially high in vitamin A and potassium. They also provide some calcium, iron, magnesium and folate.

They are versatile: Try them roasted, puréed, steamed, baked or grilled. You can add them to soups and stews, or grill and place them on top of leafy greens for a delicious salad. Puree and add to a protein shake/smoothie.
