LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

As fall weather moves in and the leaves start changing, there is much to look forward to here at the Missouri Athletic Club. I am thrilled to be a Member of the MAC as we celebrate the 119th anniversary of our incorporation date. It is quite impressive that our Club has withstood the test of time. In 1903, Charles Henry Genslinger, Zack W. Tinker and Frank R. Tate organized the Missouri Athletic Club. While the Club was renamed the Missouri Athletic Association in 1914 (still visible on our Downtown Clubhouse), our original title returned to the Club in 1939. Despite the changes over the years, the MAC’s spirit of excellence, service and tradition has endured for over a century. It’s remarkable to think that this idea, formed due to the World’s Fair coming to St. Louis, has been a staple in the heart of our city for 119 years – incredible!

With many Club events upcoming this fall, I want to draw attention to several events dedicated to our female Membership. The Women of Distinction Luncheon on Oct. 7 is a yearly event held to honor six local women each year, along with one Rising Star. Honorees are women who stand out in a variety of fields due to their excellence in business, civic engagement, philanthropic programs and mentorship. This year’s honorees include Lilian Doan Davis (Shareholder, Polsinelli), Laurna Godwin (Owner and President, Vector Communications), Dr. Christine Jacobs (Dean and Vice President for Medical Affairs, St. Louis University School of Medicine), Tamara Keefe (Founder and CEO, Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Ice Cream), Nancy Meyer (Vice President of Human Resources, Dierbergs Markets, Inc.), Carol Rogers (Managing Director and Partner, Hightower Wealth Advisors) and Dr. Margaret Reynolds as the Rising Star (Pediatric Ophthalmology, St. Louis Children’s Hospital). I encourage all of you to attend this luncheon, as I am certain we will be inspired by these women who are positively impacting our community daily.

In addition to the Women of Distinction Luncheon, the Women’s Initiative Group and the Women Business Owners Roundtable have been very hard at work organizing new opportunities to engage our female Members at the Club. They host a variety of events and initiatives throughout the year, which can be explored further on our website at mac-stl.org/Women.

If you haven’t done so already, I highly encourage all of you to make a reservation for lunch or dinner in our newly

remodeled 1903 Dining Room at the West Clubhouse. The space turned out absolutely beautiful. The photos both inside and outside the space depicting some of our Club’s rich history are compelling and a wonderful addition. The Dining Room is the perfect complement to the very popular 1903 Bar, and it is receiving rave reviews from our Members. Chef Charles and his team have created a new and innovative menu and are supplementing it with some very compelling and delicious daily specials. I can’t wait to see what he has in store in the coming weeks and months.

Considering how quickly time seems to pass once autumn arrives, the holiday season will be here before we know it. As we plan for the colder months ahead, I encourage our Members to consider contributing to our Employee Holiday Fund. MAC employees are truly a step above the rest, and it goes a long way for us as Members to show our appreciation to the staff. Each day, they go above and beyond their expected duties for our sake, and it is important to recognize their hard work. I also encourage you to show your appreciation to the staff by expressing your gratitude in person. It is incredible how meaningful the simple act of sharing a few kind words can be to a person.

Speaking of our exceptional staff members, I would like to recognize a recipient of the distinguished employee award. This individual works diligently to engage our youngest Members at the West Clubhouse.

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Iwant to thank all our Members who supported the annual MAC Sports Foundation Golf Tournament in late August. The event was a sellout and a fun day of camaraderie on the links, but it was so much more. The tournament helped kick off a potentially very impactful initiative in our community. Through the event’s success, the MAC Sports Foundation has pledged a $50,000 donation to help fund the installation of a new wood gymnasium floor at the Youth and Family Center (YFC) – fantastic! The YFC is located right here in our neighborhood, less than a mile north of the Downtown Clubhouse at the intersection of Ninth and Cass.

When I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. LaChrisa Crenshaw, YFC Executive Director, I was amazed by the dedication of her team and the spirit of their organization. Founded in 1888, the Youth and Family Center supports residents of St. Louis to help them achieve their full potential. Their programs educate, advocate, build job skills and support healthy living across generations. As community stabilizers, they strive to meet evolving community needs.

I found several other similarities between our two organizations. Both have long, rich histories dating back more than a century, promote active and healthy lifestyles and are driven by preserving a strong sense of community.

The one big difference between our two organizations is access to resources. It’s clear that Dr. Crenshaw and her team are working hard to make some significant improvements to their facility, but there are great needs. The most evident of these needs is the state of the gymnasium floor. It is a multi-functional and recreational space used by all ages. However, the floor is falling apart and isn’t safe for regular use.

During a recent visit to the YFC, I was greeted by many kids with smiling faces playing basketball after school. Unfortunately, the condition of the floor limits what programs the staff can offer them. I talked to

legendary local basketball coach Floyd Irons, who serves as the Youth Sports Coordinator at the YFC. Coach Irons said a new gym floor would allow them to expand the number of recreational activities they can provide, including a basketball league.

The MAC Sports Foundation’s charitable and educational mission is to encourage and recognize outstanding achievements in the field of sports and athletics, so it seemed like a natural fit for the Foundation to lend a helping hand as the YFC works toward launching its own basketball program. While the efforts at the Golf Tournament helped jump-start this initiative, work remains. In October and November, the MAC Sports Foundation is leading a campaign to raise another $100,000 to make the new YFC gymnasium floor a reality.

It’s no secret that downtown St. Louis has faced its share of challenges in recent years, and this one project won’t miraculously solve everything. The challenges can seem overwhelming, but if we start making improvements one block at a time, the goal of making a lasting, meaningful impact in our neighborhood is attainable. The success of this project can serve as a model for more projects and partnerships among downtown groups. The entire community can pull together and make a very powerful change in the lives of the residents of our neighborhood.

We are asking our Members, along with our Members’ corporate partners, to team up to reach our goal. On page 16, you can read more about the MAC Sports Foundation’s initiative with the YFC. To learn how you can help and make a contribution, please visit mac-sportsfoundation.org.

See you at the Club!

LETTER FROM THE CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

FY 2022 RECAP

August marked the end of fiscal year (FY) 2022 for the Club. Considering that the country was rebounding from a pandemic when the fiscal year began, I am happy to report that the Club experienced solid financial performance which provided the resources to enhance the Member experience in many impactful ways throughout the year.

The Club launched two major improvements during the fiscal year, the renovation of the Downtown Clubhouse’s famed Jack Buck Grille, and the renovation of the 1903 Dining Room in the West Clubhouse. The new furniture for the Jack Buck Grille has arrived, adding the finishing touches and setting the stage for extraordinary experiences – think Cardinal’s games, post-event celebrations, themed dinners, and more. By the time this article hits your door, the 1903 Dining Room will be open—the perfect complement to the 1903 Bar. This is your new go-to spot for breakfast meetings, business lunches, family dinners and exclusive celebrations. It’s the best restaurant in town that you can’t get into unless you’re a Member of the Missouri Athletic Club!

Other downtown capital improvements include the replacement of incline trainers/treadmills, a new HVAC unit for 5M, three new pieces of kitchen equipment and Zoom Room functionality. In addition to the 1903 Dining Room renovation at West, we’ve upgraded four HVAC units, replaced tennis curtains, installed a fiber optic internet connection and new Wi-Fi access points, and purchased two new Palisade climbers.

Our year-end Membership headcount was 2,535, up 183 from August 2021. When the Membership level exceeded 2,500, the Club initiated a waitlist for access to the West Clubhouse in an effort to provide the best experience for our Membership. This strategy has been well-received, and new Members have quickly transitioned off the waitlist.

Operating revenues for the year totaled $12.6 million compared to $8.7 million in FY 2021, $8.6 million in FY 2020 and $12.2 million in FY 2019. Our overnight rooms business generated $1.3 million in revenue, which is within $100,000 of our 2019 all-time high-water mark. Downtown Food and Beverage revenues reached nearly $4.4 million, just ahead of 2019 revenues. West Food and Beverage revenues topped $3.2 million, also ahead of 2019 revenues.

Of course, the other side of the coin is that the Club has been impacted by increasing prices for everything from wages and benefits, food and beverage products, and Cherry Diamond magazine printing to cleaning supplies, pool chemicals and natural gas.

The Club’s bottom line operating cash flow for the year was $1.7 million which was $184,000 less favorable than budget but $1.1 million ahead of last year. Operating

cash flow levels prior to the pandemic were in the $2 to $2.2 million range. This level provides ample resources for principal payments on debt and much-needed capital improvements. Next year’s budget projects an operating cash flow of $1.9 million. To get there, the Board of Governors unanimously approved a 6.5% dues increase that was effective Sept. 1, as reflected on your August statement. The average increase across all Membership categories is less than $14 per month. This will provide the cash flow needed for enhancing the Club’s facilities at both Clubhouses during FY 2023. Members will experience numerous improvements in many areas of the Club, such as cardio equipment replacements, a refresh of the Downtown 5M locker room, updates in the West Pro Shop, new carpet, lighting, paint and other items for the men’s and women’s locker rooms at West and pool area upgrades at both Clubhouses.

As of the end of August, the Club had long-term bank debt of $8,697,000 and MAC Redevelopment Corp., which owns our garage, had long-term debt of $732,000. In May of this year, the Club took out a new loan of $3,000,000 for the purpose of fully funding our employee pension obligation. This will allow the frozen pension plan to be terminated. Thanks to favorable market performance and increasing interest rates, our consultants have good reason to believe that we will be able to purchase annuities for our eligible employees for much less than originally anticipated, which will leave a cash surplus in our Pension Sinking Fund. Stay tuned for more details as the process unfolds.

Our line of credit has been on standby during much of the fiscal year, having been accessed only three times. The amounts borrowed were minimal, and were paid back within just a few days. This is a result of the Club’s improved working capital position. In addition, our operating reserve fund remains intact and available for future opportunities.

The Club’s solid financial foundation is a product of our planning process based on The 4A’s; setting the Agenda, Allocating the resources, Activating the work and Accounting for the results. The outcome is a 10-year Financial Roadmap that enables the fulfillment of the Vision and Mission of the MAC.

If you have any questions regarding the Club’s finances, please contact the Club’s Chief Financial Officer, Pam Roth, at 314-539-4400 or proth@mac-stl.org.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Zach Clark

CD: Can you start off by telling us a little bit about yourself?

ZC: I am a husband, married for over 22 years to Paula, and “Dad” to two young adult sons. I’m also the founder of Development and Leadership Coaching, a non-traditional business to help faith-based leaders grow significant giving—step by step. Beginning with just one Christian school in 2013, our movement of coaches has served over 240 nonprofit organizations across North and Central America.

CD: When did you first join the MAC? Do you remember what drew you here?

ZC: I love places that are irreplaceable! There’s nothing like the Missouri Athletic Club anywhere in the country with our blend of history, community, fitness, experiences and fantastic food. You either “get it” immediately or you don’t. I like to think I was one of those who “got it” from the get-go.

CD: Since joining in 2019, can you tell us about how the Club has changed during your time here?

ZC: Watching the Club navigate the pandemic said much to me about what we value here as Members: the people, the tradition and working to change for the better. As others panicked and bailed on their clubs, I saw our core of committed folks work to strengthen the Club for the future.

CD: How do you primarily use the Club?

ZC: Our company is entirely virtual, and has been from day one in January 2013. So, the Club primarily serves as my home place for meetings with individuals and small groups. We even safely hosted a

gathering of leaders from around the country at the Club in October 2020, when so many couldn’t pull together in-person events. The Club enables me to turn nearly every meeting into a “wow” experience. All this (along with great fitness facilities) helps me and our company grow stronger to impact more lives!

CD: Tell us about your history and current role at Development and Leadership Coaching.

ZC: My focus is on helping my family, friends and leaders around me experience the reality that God is still doing impossible things in this old, beat-up world we live in today. As a founder, I spend most of my time listening, learning and doing my best to teach and serve a growing team of coaches and supporting team members.

CD: Why might an MAC Member be interested in your company?

ZC: I find that most generous people (which describes our MAC Members) support non-profit organizations that they know could benefit from wise guidance. So, what we do is come alongside a leader who knows they need help. This leader holds a position of influence in a faith-based organization and believes their giving has hit a lid, or they’ve identified a big gap between the present and future for their organization. We help leaders achieve measurable results while working with a coach who becomes a trusted advisor on the team.

CD: What kind of legacy are you hoping to impart on the MAC?

ZC: : I only hope that I could live up to the example of so many generations of Members. I’m still learning in this area, but I would love to be generous and share memorable moments that can only be created at the MAC. F

CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB

Next Novels for the Book Club

Over the next two months, the Book Club will be fortunate as Jim Segrist and Jane Molden lead the closing meetings of 2022.

On Oct. 13, Jim Segrist will guide the discussion of “The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance

During the Blitz” by Erik Larson. In this book, Larson shows, in cinematic detail, how Churchill taught the British people “the art of being fearless.”

It is a story of political brinkmanship, but it’s also an intimate domestic drama, set against the backdrop of Churchill’s primeministerial country home, Chequers; his wartime retreat, Ditchley, where he and his entourage go when the moon is brightest, and the bombing threat is highest; and of course, 10 Downing Street in London.

Drawing on diaries, original archival documents, and once-secret intelligence reports—some released only recently— Larson provides a new lens on London’s darkest year through the day-to-day experience of Churchill and his family.

On Nov. 8, Jane Molden will lead our exploration of “The Girl with Seven Names: A North Korean Defector’s Story”

by Hyeonseo Lee. This promises to be an extraordinary insight into life under one of the world’s most ruthless and secretive dictatorships - and the story of one woman’s terrifying struggle to avoid capture/ repatriation and guide her family to freedom.

As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom, and as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realize that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed, surely, her country could not be, as she had been told, “the best on the planet”? Aged 17, she decided to escape North Korea. She could not have imagined that it would be 12 years before she was reunited with her family.

Each meeting will be held at the West Clubhouse at 5:30 p.m. For more information and reservations, contact Genie McKee at evmckee@gmail.com.

Beyond shelter and basic needs, they deliver transformative solutions to help young people ages 16 to 24 build productive, independent and sustainable lives.

Girls on the Run inspires girls third through eighth grade to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running. Underscoring the important connection between physical and emotional health, this program addresses the whole girl at a critical age when society begins to tell them what they can and cannot do.

Kellsie’s Hope Foundation provides HOPE to families that have children suffering from cancer by offering immediate support through trips and gifts (wishes) that might otherwise be unattainable. They are also dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support childhood cancer research and support the education of healthcare providers with an annual nursing scholarship.

Please submit all materials by email to csc@mac-stl.org or mail to Missouri Athletic Club, Attn: Katie Maurer, 405 Washington Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63102.

The deadline for nominating a 2023 charity is Friday, Oct. 28.

CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB

Around Town with the Forever Young Club

and depicts commercial traffic and riverboat entertainment through to the days of the Admiral, including books, newspapers, steamboat wheels and other artifacts from the height of riverboat days. The expansive collection of paintings, sculptures and other artifacts in the art collection step through time, telling the area’s impressive history. A current exhibition of traditional and pictorial maps hints at the Mercantile’s broad collection of antique and vintage maps.

Our August Forever Young Club trip was a look into the past at Mercantile Library housed in the Thomas Jefferson Library on the University of Missouri – St. Louis campus, followed by a visit to the St. Louis County Election Headquarters at Northwest Plaza. Dusty and boring, you say? That couldn’t be more wrong.

Established in 1846 by civic leaders and philanthropists, the Mercantile Library exists today as a nationally renowned collection containing a wide-ranging record of St. Louis as a center of western expansion, riverboat commerce and railroad transportation. Founded as a private subscription library, it is the oldest general library in continuous existence west of the Mississippi.

When the library lost its historic home in Downtown St. Louis, UMSL Chancellor Dr. Blanche Touhill – a longtime MAC Member – worked to bring it to the university in 1997, where it remains a valuable research facility.

The Mercantile’s John W. Barriger, III National Railroad Library holds extensive historical materials and artifacts, including a plethora of model trains. The Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Library collection documents the vital role St. Louis played in westward expansion

Glen Echo Country Club served a delicious lunch, providing a pause between the stimulating history housed in the Mercantile Library before moving to St. Louis County Election Headquarters. Directors Rick Stream and Eric Fey were eager to show us the detailed measures taken to ensure the security of both the in-person and absentee voting processes. Separate secure rooms are used for storing absentee ballots, counting absentee ballots and processing electronically voted ballots. The rooms can only be entered by a Republican and a Democrat staff member electronically logging in and out simultaneously. We also learned the process for hiring and training poll workers and the detailed measures taken to provide them with the supplies and support necessary to operate as many as 240 County polling locations. Who knew the taxpayer bill for a primary election is 1.2 million dollars, with a general election carrying a tab of 1.6 million? We came away with a new appreciation for the complexity and carefully controlled mechanics of our election process.

Join us at the West Clubhouse for lunch and an interesting speaker on the third Friday of each month and for our trips.

Smokin’ on the Rooftop

On Friday, Sept. 9, Kelly’s Heroes rocked out on the rooftop of the Downtown Clubhouse Garage at the 3rd annual Cigar-B-Que. This event included a delicious barbeque meal consisting of baby back ribs, creamy dill red potato salad, coleslaw, molasses bacon baked beans, corn on the cobb, pulled pork with St. Louis-style BBQ sauce, beer bratwurst, rolls and fresh-baked pies. Attendees also received Cigar-B-Que logo cups thanks to the Mark Twain Society.

MAC

FOUNDATION

KICKS OFF CAMPAIGN

for New Youth & Family Center Initiative

The MAC Sports Foundation has pledged $50,000 to kick off an effort to raise $150,000 for the installation of a new gymnasium floor at the Youth and Family Center (YFC) in downtown St. Louis. The funds were raised at the MAC Sports Foundation’s recent annual golf tournament.

The initiative was set into motion when Michael McMillan, President of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, introduced the MAC Sports Foundation to the YFC. The two organizations, each steeped in tradition with a long, rich history, share a mission to reach generations of families through athletic programs and life-enriching experiences.

“When we heard about the need at the Youth and Family Center, the MAC Sports Foundation was inspired to get involved and take the lead,” said Wally Smith, MAC General Manager. “The YFC does so much great work in our community, and this is a wonderful opportunity to help them make a big impact in our downtown neighborhood. Our two organizations share a vision that athletics has the power to make a positive difference in the lives of our young people.”

Through the leadership of Dr. LaChrisa Crenshaw, YFC Executive Director, and her staff, the YFC is changing lives and building community connections one family at a time. Currently, the YFC’s biggest need to advance its mission is a new gymnasium floor. The current gymnasium is a multi-functional and recreational space used by all ages; however, the concrete and urethane-coated floor is failing and unsafe, limiting the organization’s ability to offer young people quality programs in a safe environment.

“They want a place to go that they can be proud of,” said Dr. Crenshaw. “A place that offers the opportunity to make good choices. Right now, there aren’t a lot of places for our kids, teens and young adults to be active and have fun. We want to provide that space for them at the Center. Having a renovated and functioning gym floor with secure and usable exterior doors would help us in so many ways.”

Coach Floyd Irons, the legendary former coach at Vashon High School, serves as the Youth Sports Coordinator at the YFC. “A new gym floor would give us the ability to start a youth basketball league,” said Irons. “It would enhance all activities for one of our greatest resources—our youth. I am a firm believer that more than coal, more than nuclear power, children are our greatest resources.”

The MAC Sports Foundation is encouraging any business or individual interested in directly impacting the lives of our downtown neighbors to contribute to the goal of funding this project. You will be giving kids and families a much-needed safe, functioning space to

SPORTS

enjoy healthy activities while building positive experiences and offering more opportunities to achieve their full potential.

“It’s no secret that downtown has faced its share of challenges in recent years,” said Smith. “The challenges can seem overwhelming, but if we start making improvements one block at a time, the goal of making a meaningful impact is attainable. The entire community can pull together and make a very powerful change in the lives of the residents of our neighborhood. We’re reaching out to our downtown neighbors in the business community as well as individuals to join us in this important effort.”

Businesses and individuals looking to help

support this initiative can contact Kara Kelpe at kkelpe@mac-stl.org or visit mac-sportsfoundation.org for more information.

YOUNG

RUNNER

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Young runner Jackson Miller, featured in last August’s Cherry Diamond, continues to make his mark nationally. The son of Missouri Athletic Club Members Katie and Josh Miller, Jackson recently won the gold medal in both the 1,500 and 800-meter races at the AAU Junior Olympics in North Carolina. His 1,500-meter run came within a half second of the National Record for 13-year-olds.

Jackson had an undefeated 2022 season in both events. The eighth grader who attends St. Clement school also runs Cross Country. He was the 12-year-old National Cross Country Champion in 2021 in the 3000 and is shooting to do the same this fall as a 13-year-old.

“Josh and I are very proud of Jackson’s track and cross-country accomplishments, and these achievements are all his own,” said

mom Katie. “He plans for each race. Jackson does his homework and is well prepared. He recently told Josh that, ‘the job isn’t done’ for him, meaning, he has many more records to break and goals to achieve. With each race, he is building for the next. We look forward to watching him grow in the sport. We are so proud of his hard work, determination and passion, but above all, we just love to watch him run.”

Our hardworking staff is what keeps both Clubhouses running smoothly.

Legends of the Ring and High-Flying Action Highlight Wrestling Night

Wrestling at the Missouri Athletic Club made a smash debut at the Club last year. This year’s MAC Wrestling II, presented by STLTaxLawyer.com, was back bigger and better! Members and guests were treated in the intimate Missouri Room to the caliber of event that could fill Madison Square Garden. The extravaganza featured appearances by four legends of the ring, including WWE Hall of Famers Jerry “the King” Lawler, Sgt. Slaughter, “Cowboy” Bob Orton, and the “Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart.

The atmosphere was electric as wrestling fans enjoyed breathtaking action both inside and outside the ring. The raucous

crowd was buzzing throughout six exciting matches, reacting enthusiastically to each body slam, piledriver and leap from the top rope.

In the main event, Niles Plonk defeated Atilla Kahn to capture the SICW championship. Miranda Gordy, daughter of legendary wrestler Terry Gordy, was victorious in her match. Gary Jackson, a patriotic American, defended the honor of the stars and stripes after being ambushed by Canadian Sean Vincent.

MAC HELPS KICK OFF

WELCOMING WEEK

On Friday, Sept. 9, Members and guests gathered for breakfast in the Art Lounge to listen to a panel discussion about international talent in STEM-related fields, human resources challenges hiring in these fields and perspective from employees. The breakfast panel discussion, presented by the St. Louis Mosaic Project and the Missouri Athletic Club, was part of a series of events created by organizations and communities hoping to bring together neighbors of all backgrounds to build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and inclusive places in achieving collective prosperity.

MAC Showcases Veterans Art Displays

In honor of the Veterans Commemoration Day event, banner displays of “Vietnam: At War and At Home” and “The Battle at Home” from the Soldiers Memorial Museum will run: West Clubhouse: Friday, Sept. 30-Wednesday, Nov. 30 Downtown Clubhouse: Monday, Oct. 3-Wednesday, Nov. 30

LEARN ABOUT THE DISPLAYS:

Vietnam: At War and At Home The Vietnam War (1955–1975) simultaneously united and divided our nation—a fracture that is still felt five decades later. It was a complex conflict with no clear beginning or definitive end, fought in faraway lands, protests and political arenas at home. While American forces amassed many victories, there were also countless tragedies, and the necessity of the sacrifice of millions of men and women is still questioned today. “Vietnam: At War and At Home”

examines the era between 1955 and 1975 through two distinct viewpoints, the war front and the home front. These separate but parallel storylines will allow you to experience the physical and emotional distance between Southeast Asia and St. Louis, examine the war’s impacts and evaluate the conflict’s legacies.

The Battle at Home

The exhibit is being created by Teens Make History, a work-based learning program for local high school students. Through longterm paid apprenticeships, the program aims to build critical professional skills and give students the confidence they need to succeed. Veteran homelessness is a complex issue, and signs of homelessness often go unnoticed by the public. By exploring the factors that lead to veteran homelessness, this exhibit will challenge common misconceptions and highlight steps that can be taken to tackle this important issue.

One More Saturday Night

WITH JAKE’S LEG

Get ready for the “Greatest Story Ever Told.” Jake’s Leg, not “Uncle John’s Band,” was “Playing in the Band” for the annual poolside party at the West Clubhouse. The landscaping around the pool was beautiful with “Scarlet Begonias,” “Sugar Magnolias,” and “China Cat Sunflowers,” but “It Must Have Been the Roses” that made it all pop.

The “Weather Report” for Sept. 10 called for “Morning Dew” prior to “Sunrise,” followed by “Cold Rain and Snow,” then an “Easy Wind,” and finally a “Box of Rain.” So with a forecast that was “Hard to Handle,” the “Big Boss Man” went “Around and Around” and thought, “I Need a Miracle,” before deciding this is the “Deal”… We are not all “Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad.” There indeed will be “Dancing in the Streets” on this

night, or at least dancing in the gymnasium where “Tennessee Jed” was grooving with “Katie Mae,” plus “Samson and Delilah,” “Casey Jones and “Bertha,” alongside “Mr. Charlie” and “Rosemary.”

There was a “Touch of Grey” in the audience, but these folks were prepared to party “Til the Morning Comes.” Before Jake’s Leg said, “And We Bid You Goodnight,” as the clock was nearing “The Eleven,” their message to each person in the audience was “Let Me Sing Your Blues Away,” whether they had a case of the “U.S. Blues,” “Mexicali Blues,” or “Viola Lee Blues.” Perhaps a “New Speedway Boogie” was the cure. The audience’s response to the band was “You Win Again,” we want you back next year for “One More Saturday Night.”
