LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Happy summer and greetings!

As previewed in last month’s Cherry Diamond article, we are very pleased that the Club has successfully hired its next leader, Donald “Chip” Misch! Chip will begin his employment with the MAC this month. Chip and Wally will have approximately one month of overlap before Wally commences his well-earned retirement. We ask that Members be patient during the transition process. This is a big change. We are confident, however, that Chip will be a great addition and will continue the Club on its upward trajectory toward the Club’s vision to be the “foremost private club in St. Louis known for attracting exceptional people and enriching lives for generations.”

For those that missed the email announcement on the subject, Chip comes to the MAC from Jupiter, Florida, where he served as COO/GM at the famed Loxahatchee Club. The Loxahatchee Club consistently receives national recognition as a distinguished “Emerald” Club and a Top 20 “Platinum – Golf Club” of America ranking. Chip was born and raised in Indiana, so this is a Midwest homecoming of sorts. We look forward to welcoming Chip and his wife, Carolyn, to the MAC.

As you might imagine, this process of hiring our next leader was a lengthy and involved one. Past President Angie Minges formed an ad hoc succession planning committee, all the way back in Fall 2021, to begin the process of thinking about our next leader and other larger governance issues. Thereafter, the succession committee transformed naturally into the ad hoc search committee during Past President Brent Beumer’s leadership. I want to offer my sincere thanks and gratitude to the following members of the search committee for their dedication and leadership: PP Angie Minges, PP Joel Karsten; PG Matt Gross, PG Justin Fowler, Governor Mark Niemeyer, and Emily McCartney. On behalf of the Club, thank you for your service.

On this subject of Members’ service to the Club, our Club operates with the help and leadership of numerous volunteers in many areas. Last month, our main standing committees - Finance, Planning, Membership, and Governance - kicked off a new Board year with new and continuing Member volunteers. We are very thankful for their service to the Club; it could not operate without these volunteers. If you are interested in getting involved with a Club committee or learning about leadership opportunities, please reach out to a Governor or Gena Willis at gwillis@mac-stl.org.

While we continue to celebrate the 120th anniversary of our Club, there is another MAC anniversary to celebrate in 2023. Our Club chorus, the Apollos, celebrates its 80th anniversary this year! There is a plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Apollos near the main elevators at the

Downtown Clubhouse. Founded in 1943, this original “Club Within a Club” is still going strong. For those Members not familiar with the group, the Apollos currently perform two concerts a year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. This Fall, we plan to perform songs to help celebrate the Club’s 120th anniversary in what should be a very entertaining night. Also, the Apollos are looking for new members. If you like to sing, please join us. This is a fun group, and a great part of the MAC history and culture. We will begin rehearsals for the Fall concert in early September and meet Monday evenings on the 10th Floor at the Downtown Clubhouse. Please reach out to me, our director, Marc Strathman, or our new Apollos President, Mike Sandeberg, if you have interest. Finally, I want to thank the outgoing Apollos president, Peter Dunne, for his four years of service in that role, as well as Mr. Sandeberg for stepping up to serve in this role moving forward.

Turning to other topics, many of you saw my email communication regarding the potential Club expansion opportunity in Clayton. Here, I simply want to emphasize and assure all Members that despite what may be reported in the media or discussed in gossip around the Club or water coolers, the Club will not proceed with any such significant projects without the involvement of our Members in the decision-making process.

Regarding Club shuttles to sporting events, we are well aware of reports of non-members using our shuttles to travel to sporting events, particularly St. Louis City SC games, as well as the irritation this can cause our Members. Wally and his team are aware and are on top of it; early indications are that good progress is being made. We will continue to monitor this issue until it is addressed as well as it can be.

On a similar note, you are likely aware that enforcing our Clubhouse dress codes has been a priority for our Board, as well as making sure all Club rules are followed for the benefit of all Members. Dress code information cards have been displayed Downtown for a few months, and (as of the date of this writing) similar cards will be displayed at the West Clubhouse soon. This will remain a priority as we continue to work to get closer to realizing the aspirational goals set by our Vision and Mission statements. Please help us in this regard by cooperating with our Staff in their efforts to ensure compliance with the Club’s dress codes and our Clubhouse rules.

Finally, we celebrate our Nation’s birthday this month. On July 4, the Sportsman’s Club will be open for an America’s Birthday Parade Buffet from 7-10 a.m. Come enjoy breakfast at the Club before attending the 140th America’s Birthday Parade.

See you around the Club!

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

s my tenure at the Missouri Athletic Club winds down, I’ve contemplated on my second to last ever Cherry Diamond column. I’ve begun to reflect on some of the challenges the Club has faced, especially in the last couple of years coming out of COVID and having to restaff the entire Club. We successfully took it from running at 5 mph to its current speed of 150 mph by retooling all departments. As we did this, inflation hit. The cost of employees, insurance, goods and services went up and supply chain issues came into play. I feel the inflation has started to at least settle out and we have a much better feel of where we are costwise. Through all of this, we’ve managed fairly well. It looks like we will have a successful fiscal year which ends Aug. 31. That said, all our budgets for next year are now under development, and to offset some of this inflation there are selective spots where we feel we are a little bit light in the marketplace, especially in terms of fees and charges on items. As a result, you can expect to see some modest increases over the next couple of months in various areas such as training, lessons and locker fees.

With all this budgeting discovery, we are squarely in the throes of our planning process/cycle which is where we establish the agenda for the coming fiscal year starting on Sept. 1. We address three main arenas in this annual exercise: what our operational budgets are going to look like, what type of dollars we have left over for our capital expenditures, and what the strategy looks like for the next 3-5 years in the various departments. All this information will be forthcoming and as we conclude this tremendous amount of work, I would like to acknowledge all our department heads and staff and give a special shoutout to our CFO Pam Roth and our Account Manager Ed Redmond for all the hours they’ve put into this annual planning cycle. With all of this said, you can probably expect a dues increase rolling out on Sept. 1 with our new fiscal year. Per the bylaws, any dues increase can’t be more than 8% without a vote of our Membership so obviously we will do all we can to keep it there or below.

One of my favorite sayings around the club world is, “I hate to screw up a good story with facts,” but with all the scuttlebutt going on about the Clayton location in a recent article written by the St. Louis Business Journal, I feel I need to set the record straight. As you all know, the Saint Louis Club has moved to a new location.

Approximately a year ago, they made the decision to vacate their three floors in the Pierre Laclede Building

and move across the street. This vacancy quickly came to our attention. The Board felt as though it would not be prudent or in the Club’s best interest if we did not at least take a look at what an opportunity in Clayton would look like for the MAC.

With a task group of several Past Presidents and current Governors, we’ve developed in-depth pro formas, reviewed spaces, completed staffing models, and have done significant due diligence on our part. But rest assured, absolutely no decisions have been made one way or the other as the discovery continues. One thing is for certain, before anything would ever transpire, the entire Membership would be notified with all the facts, all the figures, or all the reasons why it does or doesn’t make sense for us to go there.

It is my feeling that as time passes, this opportunity or some other opportunity will be there. Frankly, we could be talking about this in six months, a year, two years, or not at all at some point in the future. Some could say this situation moving forward is highly unlikely, some would say maybe, and some would say this is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but prior to us ever moving forward in any shape, form, or fashion, there would have to be a vote of the entire Membership. So, the facts of this story are, no decision has been made at this particular moment in time and the bottom line is, before anything would ever take place, our Membership would be completely notified about the plusses or minuses of this opportunity and vote yea or nay on any proposal that may come forward.

Clearly, there is a lot going on at the Club with summer fun and everything else, and this month, we will start the transition with our new General Manager Donald “Chip” Misch who joins us on July 15. I’ve had the pleasure of speaking and spending time with Chip on a number of occasions, and he seems like a terrific guy, a total pro in clubs and in management, and I believe the MAC will be in very good hands under his leadership going forward. We will work together for the next 4-6 months to be sure this transition is like an Olympic Gold Medal winning relay race. I plan to smoothly hand the baton to Chip as I continue to watch the MAC win in so many different ways from Franklin, Tenn.

May marked the end of the third quarter of the Club’s 2023 fiscal year. Year-to-date, the Club has experienced strong performance in the following areas:

F Member headcount reached 2,544, which was 15 less than planned but 38 ahead of last May

F Dues revenue was $7,350,000, which was $53,000 ahead of plan and $729,000 better than last year

F Overnight Rooms revenue came in at $933,000, which was $69,000 ahead of last year

F The Downtown Food & Beverage department experienced strong revenues, coming in at $4,340,000, which was $425,000 better than plan and $1,083,000 greater than last year; profit was also strong, registering $261,000, which was $127,000 better than plan and $275,000 better than last year

F West’s Food & Beverage revenues also came in strong at $2,844,000, which was nearly $380,000 ahead of plan and $547,000 better than last year

F Tennis revenues have also been strong, reaching $743,000 with a profit of $150,000

F Operating revenue totaled $10,892,000, which was $821,000 better than plan and $1,914,000 more than last year

OTHER BENCHMARKS INCLUDE:

F Net Operating Cash Flow (net income before depreciation) for the period totaling $1,070,000, which was $305,000 less than budget, and $401,000 less than last year

F Line of credit balance of $591,000

F Long-term bank debt of $8,199,000

F Capital expenditures totaling $868,000

While revenues across the Club are on the rise, the Club is experiencing continued cost increases in many areas, such as food, beverage, departmental and cleaning supplies, utilities, and employee-related expenses. As we compile our fiscal year 2024 budget, it is inevitable that price increases are on the horizon to offset these cost increases so that we may preserve the extraordinary experiences that our Members expect and deserve.

Thank you for your continued support of the MAC!

MAC Book Club Summer Readings

Thursday, July 13 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

Thursday, Aug. 10 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

On July 13, Jane Molden will lead us through a discussion of Celeste Ng’s Our Missing Hearts, a popular novel with an average of 4.3 out of 5 from over 13,000 Amazon ratings.

Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. His mother Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left the family without a trace when he was nine years old. For a decade, his family’s life has been governed by laws written to preserve “American culture” in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. When Bird receives a mysterious letter containing only a cryptic drawing, he is pulled into a quest to find his mother. His journey will take him back to the many folktales she poured into his head as a child, through the ranks of an underground network of librarians, into the lives of the children who have been taken, and finally to New York City, where a new act of defiance may be the beginning of much-needed change.

On Aug. 10, John Hoehn will guide the discussion on Isabelle Allende’s A Long Petal of the Sea.

In the late 1930s, civil war grips Spain. When General Franco and his fascists succeed in overthrowing the government, hundreds of thousands are forced to flee in a treacherous journey over the mountains of the French border. Among them is Roser, a pregnant young widow, who finds her life intertwined with Victor Dalmau, an army doctor and the brother of her deceased love. To survive, the two must unite in a marriage neither of them desires. A masterful work of historical fiction about hope, exile and belonging. A Long Petal of the Sea shows Isabel Allende at the height of her powers. For monthly MAC Book Club meetings, reservations are made with Dr. Genie McKee, Book Club Chair, at evmckee@gmail.com.

Winner of the Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History, Prof. McManus will discuss the subject of his most recent book, To the End of the Earth: The US Army and the Downfall of Japan, 1945. From Luzon to Japan, McManus will recount ordeals of American soldiers and officers, braving intense heat, rampant disease, and a by-now suicidal enemy, determined to kill as many opponents as possible

before defeat, and they will encounter Japanese soldiers faced with the terrible choice between capitulation or doom. At the same time, the titanic ego and ambition of the Pacific War’s most prominent general, Douglas MacArthur, added to the complex challenges presented by Japan’s unconditional surrender and America’s lengthy occupation. Memories Milestones

Commemorating the MAC 150 Club and our 50-Year Members

The Missouri Athletic Club has been a cornerstone of the St. Louis community for 120 years, and its 50-Year Club and MAC 150 Club are a testament to the long-lasting dedication of their Members. On June 20, the Club celebrated its milestone Members in the Missouri Room, a fitting tribute to those who have been a part of the MAC family

for over half a century.

To qualify for the MAC 150 Club, the sum of a member’s age plus the number of years they have been a member must equal at least 150, a challenging feat that only our longest-tenured Members can achieve. MAC 150 Club Members receive a symbolic coin, a tangible reminder of their commitment to

the Club and its values. Meanwhile, the 50-year Members receive a commemorative pin, symbolizing their long-lasting dedication to the Club.

As the MAC celebrates its 120th anniversary this year, this event was a fitting tribute to the Club’s rich history and the Members who have helped make it a success.

CELEBRATING 70+ YEARS OF MEMBERSHIP

Shirley Sher* F Don Nies* F Jack Bodine*

It is with great enthusiasm that we wish to honor our longest-running Memberships at the MAC:

Jack Bodine is marking his family’s 73rd year of Membership, having joined himself in October 1950, Don Nies is marking his family’s 75th year of Membership, having joined himself in February 1948, and Shirley Sher is marking her family’s 77th year

of Membership, continuing to enjoy the Club after the passing of her late husband Don Sher in 2021 who was then able to celebrate 75 years of Membership at the MAC, having joined himself in March 1946.

COACH MAGGIE’S TIPS

1. Have a game plan: Knowing what foods will be at the party and setting limits are great ways to be ready and prepared.

2. Fill up with veggies: Avoid chips, crackers and bread. Instead, eat the healthier options first, like the veggie tray, and fill up on foods that take longer to digest and have fewer calories. Make a dip using yogurt with dill weed or add 1/2 Tbsp of ranch powder to 8 oz. of low-fat plain Greek yogurt.

3. Be mindful of portions: It can be difficult to control how much food you eat when surrounded by it. So grab a small plate (if available). Those who choose smaller plates eat up to 50 percent less calories. If they only have large plates, make sure you “see the plate.”

We

4. Pick your drinks wisely: Of course, you probably want to enjoy some “adult beverages,” but make sure to hydrate too. For every sip of alcohol, take a sip of water.

5. Bring your own healthy items: Bringing an item or two that you know is healthier guarantees you will stay on plan.

6. Indulging in desserts: Watch your portions or choose not to have dessert! Instead, bring a box of sugar-free popsicles or sugar-free Jell-O with fruit to share with everyone. If you’re not in the weight loss phase, enjoy dessert but be mindful of your portion sizes and do not have any desserts the following day.

7. Do not stand around the food: Make

for Staying on a Healthy Path During Summer Get-Togethers

one plate of food and move away from the table. Do not sit in front of snacks. Always keep a bottle of water in one hand if you are standing around talking.

8. Stay active: Plan more physical activities to balance the number of calories you eat with the number of calories you burn. Go for a bike ride, a walk, or get a workout in before your get-together begins.

9. Bring a healthy snack: If you’re going to someone’s house, offer to bring a healthy appetizer or side dish. This will guarantee there will be healthy choices for you.

10. Maintain your weight: During your busy weekends, aim to maintain your weight, not gain.

Now Holds International Record

Jackson Miller, the son of Joshua and Katherine Miller, broke the middle school mile national record on Thursday, June 1 at the HOKA Festival of Miles, held at Saint Louis University High School. Miller ran the event in 4:22.33. The old record was 4:23. Come to find out, Miller’s time was also an international record for a 13-yearold. The previous time was 4:26.

“At the time of the race, I wasn’t sure what the national record was, but I wanted to establish a meet record so that no one could ever break it,” Miller said. “After the race, people kept coming up to me and congratulating me on breaking the national record. I felt pretty good about the race and accomplishing my goals.”

He now looks forward to competing in the Jr. Olympics this summer where he

plans to qualify in four events. Miller said he is focused on “winning the 800 m, 1500 m, and maybe 3000 m.”

“I want to try to break the 1500 meter record, which is currently held by St. Louisan Brandon Miller, who competed in the most recent World Championship in the 800 meter,” the future Billiken said. Miller will run track and cross country for SLUH starting this fall.

“I want to make an impact my freshman year,” he said. “After high school, I’m hoping to compete in college and beyond.”

Part of Miller’s training consists of using MAC facilities with his dad such as lifting weights and using the cardio equipment.

“I think it’s made a big difference in my speed and strength,” he said.

Summer Fitness Tips: Navigating Summer BBQs

West Fitness Manager Paul Helfrich was on the Missouri Athletic Club Connections Podcast this past month. He shared some great summer fitness tips as well as some of the history of fitness at the Club as we celebrate the MAC’s 120th anniversary. Some of Helfrich’s tips for BBQ and party season include putting brightcolored foods on your plate first when in the buffet line. Follow his 90-10 rule: ninety percent of the time, follow the plan; ten percent of the time, it’s okay to fall off. Lastly, it takes a long time for our bodies to digest alcohol. So, Helfrich suggests having a drink or two and then getting right back to your meal plan.
