Case Study Contaminated land monitoring services

The challenge ‘Contaminated land’ is used to describe land polluted by heavy metals, chemical and radioactive substances, oils, tars, gases and asbestos which could cause significant harm to people or protected species and/or significant pollution of surface waters or groundwater. This definition refers to contamination caused by past uses of sites such as former factories, mines, steelworks, refineries and landfills.

The solution Environmental monitoring specialist enitial is experienced in environmental monitoring and sampling of contaminated land and has a national network of geo-environmental field technicians. enitial commonly supports site investigations, remediation strategies and ongoing environmental assessments in addition to the following services: • Groundwater level monitoring • Groundwater sampling using inertial, peristaltic, electric, pneumatic or bladder pumps • Non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) monitoring and sampling • Water quality analysis using single or multi-parameter analysers and flow through cells • Aquifer tests including, rising and falling head and slug tests • Data loggers for continuous and long-term trend analysis • Ground gas monitoring and analysis using the latest monitors and canister equipment • Volatile organic compounds (VOC) testing • Internal space and surface emissions testing enitial’s in-house team of account managers and analysts provide an unrivalled data management service with results supplied within 48 hours. The accurate data enables the identification of any problems for the owners to rectify before they cause significant harm to people or protected species and/or significant pollution of surface waters or groundwater. The nationwide coverage of its geo-environmental field technicians allows enitial to offer a flexible, cost effective and efficient service to clients.

Case study enitial recently worked with a geo-environmental consultancy to conduct a site investigation of an industrial estate in order to determine the risk from a closed landfill site nearby. The monitoring programme was undertaken over a 12 week period which encompassed ground gas monitoring and analysis using canisters, low flow groundwater sampling and internal space monitoring. enitial provided all of the data to the client within 24 hours of each visit, allowing the consultancy to make immediate decisions regarding the scope of works at the industrial estate. The proactive and successful approach of enitial to this investigation has led to four further projects of this nature and a framework agreement with the consultancy to provide geo-environmental monitoring on all of its site investigations and remediation projects.
