Vilnius Gediminas Technical University VGTU 2002-2006

The Department of Architecture at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University is the largest institution of higher education in the field of architecture in Lithuania. It provides all three levels of studies: undergraduate (bachelor), graduate (master) and postgraduate (doctoral). Over 500 students of all levels are studying in the school nowadays. Many of the university`s academic staff members are leading authorities in their field. The faculty consists of 57 lecturers, including 12 professors and 15 associated professors. Approximately 70 bachelor and 50 master degree students graduate every year. Bachelor studies last 4 years, which is 240 ECTS credits. As the Department of Architecture provided such an opportunity, I took the chance and challenge to study in English. After four years of studies, my diploma work was graded “outstanding. www.ar.vgtu.lt

The main purpose of the project is to create extremely economic flat, without sacrifying comfort. To economise the space I have used some featured furniture. home cinema from the ceiling does not take place *onSuspended the ground in order not to disturb human moving. Integrated bed leaves the space to the resident in day-time or *on special occasions. The main space of the flat is subdivided into several zones: *entrance, living zone, bar zone & kitchen. Bathroom is placed in comfortable place: straight to the sleep* ing zone. It is separated from the cloak-room with sliding door. * Cloak-room is luxured with natural sunlight from the window of work room. Windows of the flat are from ground to ceiling, to let in maxi*mum of the natural light & optically extend the room. The entrance to the studio is comfortable, as the door easily * opens to both sides. * The studio is separated from the main room with a special cupboard, which is detailed in the scheme. flat is easy to transform, to be blocked together in order *to This create apartment buildings.

Task elements: +Exposition to the crossroad +Situation of the location +The shape of the area plot +Relation with the surroundings +Internal of the old town +Precipitous landscape

The building site is located on the crossroad of the Pylimo & Naugarduko str. The program was started to be analysed assuming that some poor-conditioned & shoddy, non valuable buildings would be demolished. Still, responssibility & feeling of the matter lead me to retain old buildings. The triangular shape of the plot is formed by old buildings and roads.

Considering the given program and task elements, the volume of the building of approximately 1000 sq.m was assumed. First of all, attention to the height of the existing surrounding buildings & shape of the building site was paid. The surrounding buildings are 4-5 storey high; across the street a green area is laid, what gives us cross rate with the associated buildings of approx. 1:1.5 As the plot situation gives us a representative angle, which is very suitable for the entrance from the street corner, this context should be exploited. It is also very important to pay attention to the settings of the car parking, and inner yard, which can’t be left opened to the main visual axis because of the character & way of the old city’s perimeter exposure. The bank with an atrium above a part of the main operations hall was designed. More daylight was let in to the main building room through the skylight top. At the same time, the skylight top also hides the firewall, a part of which was left opened. In order to stick to the program, the building was limited to 2 storeys, with a suspended console on the park side from the Naugarduko str. side.

The plot is situated in the city perifery; one side of the plot is limited by the water, another is scratched by the huge road ring, which causes big traffic. The problem is that the territory is not very suitable for the primary school because of the traffic and the lake, which could cause an accident for careless children. On the other hand, it has got an interesting landscape: steep slopes, swamp, chaotically grown trees - a potential park, also suitable for sport activities. Search for the concept brought me to the main idea of the school design: the idea is to isolate the school from the road ring totally, to organise water use as an aesthetical object, without any possibility to reach it easily. As a result, one side of the building is hidden in the lanscape from the main road, another - acts as a screen to the lake and the park. Because of the needs for the natural lightening there are some windows looking to the road ring but they are still partially hidden. The hidden side can still be the main elevation of the building because it is exposed to the road, cars going by. The naturalistic view of the landscape is being enriched with organic forms - volumes named “stones”. These volumes play the most important role in the building’s image and demand much attention for design. Construction: because of the complicated plan, monolith supporting walls & column grid are used. For the “stone” design, the girder structures would fit the best, these volumes being covered with glass. It would be better to use timber girder structure in the pool, because of moisture. The planing of the school fits the given program. Some more functionalities were added: logopedical room, summer auditorium, park - running track, bicycle ground etc. Instead of the central cloack room, I suggest to place lockers in the corridors. For the choreography lessons, I suggest to use LFI screens. Computer room & library are closely related: computer room could be used for information search when there are no lessons in there. On the next page the plan of the infants class block, which consists of the classroom, closet for changing clothes and keeping stuff, and play/restroom, also suitable for daytime sleep, is presented. Beds are designed like drawers and can be slid in when there is no need for lower parts. There is a box and cupboard for keeping toys, bedclothes, books etc. For the needs of children who are staying for longer time, a mini ktchen designed. For inventory and other stuff, there is a place in the closet. Lockers are used to keep personal belongings.

annex Extention of The House J.Basanavičiaus str.30

The plot for annex is placed between two strategically important roads of the Vilnius Oldtown: J.Basanavičiaus & Švitrigailos. Neighbouring buildings: 3 storey building on the opposite side of the J.Basanavičiaus str. with slope roof 4 storey building on the Švitrigailos street.

The plot for a apartment building is suited in place where the building is obviously missing. Opening of the Senvagė (river) shore uncovers empty space, which stresses itself as precious plot with luxurious view to the Senvagė. The building consists of three main volumes. The lower-level volume is placed under two upper volumes, it goes under the Kranto street, where it opens its screens to Senvagė. On the shore-side of the building, the commerce zone is placed. Under the upper volumes, next to the commerce zone, a parking for the residents and customers of commerce is designed. Two upper-level volumes are set for the apartments & commerce on the ground floor. On the first floor, the volumes are connected by a playground for children & art gallery. The volume, which is closer to the shore, is lower in order to avoid monopoly of view to Senvagė, therefore, this part of the building has a roof, which can be exploited. The building is being crossed by line of light, which stresses movement of people in the building. Spaces placed underground catch daylight from skylights that play as light holes in the night.
