F ROM T H E C E O & A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Welcome to The Sleeping Beauty. In so many ways, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s name is synonymous with ballet. More often than not, when we think of ballet music, his exquisite melodies come to mind. But it is interesting to think that Tchaikovsky actually only composed three ballet scores. His first, Swan Lake in 1876, was initially met with relatively negative reviews–it was considered too melodramatic and unstructured for a ballet. His second ballet, The Sleeping Beauty in 1889, was hailed as a success both for its elegant orchestrations and its soaring themes, but was long and somewhat unwieldy. Tchaikovsky’s last ballet, The Nutcracker in 1892, was first thought to be too simplistic, underdeveloped, and not profound enough. Sadly, Tchaikovsky did not live long enough to see his now-revered ballet scores become the most enduring music for the art-form; The Nutcracker and Swan Lake perhaps becoming the most popular ballets of all time. But it’s of The Sleeping Beauty that Tchaikovsky was proudest. Indeed, many consider this score one of the finest of all of his works with its beautifully developed themes and leitmotifs. There is a purity to this score. That beauty and purity translates to the dance originally choreographed by Marius Petipa, that makes it one of the most demanding ballets ever performed. Even in its many adaptations over the years, it still requires absolute clarity, specificity, and control, all while creating believable characters to tell the beloved fairy tale. For this reason, The Sleeping Beauty is considered the hallmark of classical ballet and a true test of any ballet company. Ballet West has presented three different versions of The Sleeping Beauty throughout the years. In 1986, Ballet West unveiled its first version, originally conceived by the former Artistic Director Bruce Marks and put on the stage by his successor John Hart CBE, with staging by Denise Schultz and Louis Godfrey. This production brought the elegance and stylistic specificity of the English School of dance and England’s long history with the ballet. In 2000, the next Ballet West Artistic Director Jonas Kåge, produced his own version drawing on his broad history with “Beauty,” having danced and directed the work with American Ballet Theater and around the world. When I first decided to redo this great classic, I will admit it presented a daunting challenge. I wanted to keep the refinement, the purity, and all the technical challenges, but my goal was also to bring out the storytelling aspects and fairy-tale magic of the ballet, adhering to its many traditions, but accentuating the theatricality to keep it vibrant and alive. As always, it is with deep gratitude to our donors and patrons for your generosity. Your gifts, both large and small help to make this art form eternal. My sincere thank you for allowing us to tell timeless stories, to delight young and old, and to dream of a bright future. Sincerely,

Adam Sklute Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, where he was a Soloist before rising through the ranks to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West, marked by both bottom line growth and elevated artistry, has been heralded by many publications, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. This year, Adam was promoted to the position of CEO and Artistic Director where he will also oversee the administrative operations of the Company.

SYNOPSIS

PROLOGUE The Christening The King and Queen have invited all the Fairies of the land to the christening of their daughter, the Princess Aurora. Each fairy presents her gift to the newborn Princess, imbuing her with the qualities of Kindness, Joy, Beauty, and Temperament when suddenly the proceedings are interrupted by Carabosse, Fairy of Jealousy. She is in a rage because the court’s Major Domo, Catalabutte, has neglected to invite her. Carabosse casts an evil spell on Aurora. One day, when she least suspects it, the Princess will prick her finger on a spindle and die. The entire court is in despair until the Lilac Fairy, Fairy of Wisdom, steps forward to bestow her gift. Although she cannot counteract her sister’s curse, she can mollify it. Instead of dying, Aurora will fall into a deep slumber from which she can only be awakened the by the kiss of true love. ACT I The Spell It is Princess Aurora’s sixteenth birthday and as young subjects of the kingdom arrive with garlands and tokens of appreciation three old crones are busy spinning and knitting a gift. Two guards interrupt the festivities and arrest the old women. There is a years’ old ban on spinning on penalty of death and the guards are here to enforce it. The King and Queen arrive just as the guards are about to put the hags to death and because it’s a joyous occasion the King pardons the old women their transgressions. Princes from the four corners of the earth come to win Aurora’s hand in marriage and the young princess revels in the adulation of the handsome bachelors. From out the crowd one of the old crones approaches Aurora and presents her with a bouquet of roses. Enraptured, Aurora dances joyously—throwing the roses to the admiring court until she suddenly pricks her finger on a spindle that has been concealed in the bouquet. Everyone is aghast as Aurora falls lifeless . The hag reveals herself as Carabosse and dissapears in triumph. The Lilac Fairy appears and casts her spell of sleep over the princess and the court. She enshrouds the Palace in a forest until the promised awakening.

SYNOPSIS

ACT II The Vision It is a hundred years later and Prince Desire is leading a hunting party through the woods. Bored, he entertains himself with flirtatious diversions. The prince dismisses his retinue and meditates on his longing for an ideal love. The Fairies appear and show him a vision of Princess Aurora. Enraptured, the prince begs them to lead him to this beautiful vision and, led by the Lilac Fairy of Wisdom they travel through changing landscapes until they reach the hidden castle. Carabosse and her minions have been jealously guarding the castle and attempt to stop the prince but her evil magic is overpowered by the wisdom of The Lilac Fairy. Desire awakens the Princess Aurora with a kiss, breaking the spell and causing the defeated Carabosse to vanish.

ACT III The Wedding Fairy-tale characters have come to celebrate the wedding of Princess Aurora and Prince Desire. Aurora’s parents, the guests, and the entire court, joined by the fairies of Kindness, Joy, Beauty, and Temperament pay their respects to the bride and bridegroom as the Lilac Fairy blesses the marriage with wisdom and truth.

I N F O C U S: T H E S L E E P I N G B E AU T Y Behind the Story – The Sleeping Beauty By Josh Jones

Publicity shot of the original cast of Tchaikovsky's ballet, The Sleeping Beauty, St Petersburg: Mariinsky Theater, 1890. Carlotta Brianza starred as Aurora. Almost 130 years since it was first staged, The Sleeping Beauty has become one of the world’s most popular ballets. Its origins are unknown, as it was verbally passed down through the millennia and not published until the 17th Century. Tchaikovsky’s score is adored—even being used in Disney’s version of the fairy tale, and the challenging choreography is as demanding as it is beautiful. In fact, the Rose Adagio that the princess performs in Act I is considered one of the most difficult adagios in any ballet. Here are five more interesting facts about the ballet that you may not know:

The Sleeping Beauty ballet was adapted from the 1697 Charles Perrault tale, “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood.” Tchaikovsky wrote the music, and his long-time collaborator, Marius Petipa, choreographed the dances. It was first presented at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg Russia on January 15, 1890.

The premiere of The Sleeping Beauty was met with favorable critiques, especially compared to Swan Lake, Tchaikovsky’s first ballet. However,

The Sleeping Beauty | 2016–2017 season

45

I N F O C U S: T H E S L E E P I N G B E AU T Y it was still not a resounding success at first. After Tchaikovsky’s death in 1893, the ballet grew in popularity and would be performed 200 times over the next 10 years. •

The Sleeping Beauty was Tchaikovsky’s longest ballet. Including intermissions, it clocked in at nearly four hours! Today, ballet companies around the world generally edit the score. Adam Sklute’s staging for Ballet West is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, including a 20 minute intermission. As you listen to Tchaikovsky’s score, you’ll notice two musical themes that represent good (Lilac Fairy) and evil

(Carabosse). They repeat whenever the respective character is on stage. Musically, this device is called a “leitmotif,” and it helps to serve as an important thread to underline the plot. •

Ballet West’s opening weekend marks the 80th Anniversary of The Sleeping Beauty’s debut in the United States. The first complete Sleeping Beauty was designed by Catherine Littlefield and presented by the Philadelphia Ballet on February 12, 1937, almost 50 years after the premiere in Russia.

I N F O C U S: T H E S L E E P I N G B E AU T Y Arolyn Williams will never forget her first experience dancing The Sleeping Beauty By Josh Jones

With all spotlights on Arolyn, and 1,559 audience members watching, her first thought was, “Oh my God. Am I really doing this?” Looking back, she says, “It was pure endorphins that got me through. I have never experienced that kind of pain before.” Arolyn heroically went on to finish all of Act I.

Crack! When Principal Arolyn Williams stepped on stage in the role of Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty on February 13, 2014, no one in the audience heard her foot break within the first few steps of her headlining role. Not only had Arolyn heard it, even worse, she felt it. Being a professional, she danced through the pain. Principal Ballet Mistress Pamela Robinson, who was in the audience, instantly identified something was wrong. Before going to the stage, she ran downstairs to find Principal Artist Katherine Lawrence to get her into costume to relieve Arolyn in between the Rose Adagio and a short break before a solo. Unfortunately for Arolyn, when she came off stage, there just hadn’t been enough time to slide Katherine into costume yet. So, she went back out and performed the variation.

The incident demonstrates Arolyn’s quiet strength and humble professionalism, for which she is known. “Arolyn is a consummate artist,” said CEO and Artistic Director Adam Sklute. “No matter the style of dance, no matter how big or small the role, Arolyn dives into it with 100% commitment, making it her own while staying completely true to every detail and challenge.” Adam adds, “Offstage, Arolyn can come across as shy, quiet, and at times almost self-effacing. But, anyone who has seen her perform knows the magical and powerful stage creature she becomes. She’s fearless, and with a seemingly endless supply of technique and artistry which is often not apparent at first glance during the class and rehearsal process.” Arolyn nursed her foot through the spring and summer to return that very fall to dance the principal role in Giselle. This winter, audiences will see her complete the ballet she started three years ago as she once again takes on the role of Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty.

I N F O C U S: T H E S L E E P I N G B E AU T Y For Katherine Lawrence, It's Personal By Josh Jones

The last time Principal Artist Katherine Lawrence danced in The Sleeping Beauty, she was keeping a secret. Just weeks before going on stage, her doctor let her know she was pregnant. “The whole time I was thinking, no one knows that this is actually a pas de trois, not a pas de deux!”

Not only because I was pregnant with Max, but The Sleeping Beauty is very meaningful to me for another reason: it was the show in which Adam [Sklute] promoted me to Principal. I was honestly caught off-guard and wasn’t expecting it. I was heading to the basement to get ready for a school show and in my dressing room was a huge bouquet of flowers with my offer letter.

My favorite part of the entire ballet is the wedding pas. It’s the ultimate in pure classical ballet—the music is sweeping and the choreography is beautiful.

Katherine is excited to share the ballet with her son Max again, now a healthy little 2-year-old. Here are a few things she’ll tell him before the show:

48

I have been in Ballet West’s The Sleeping Beauty five times, and every time I’ve danced Aurora and/or Bluebird. So, it’s exciting to be able to take on the role of Carabosse this year. Because she flies, the person dancing the role does a fly-rehearsal with technicians right before every single performance.

Max will love the fairy tale characters, and I love that about our version. We have Puss in Boots, Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebird, Tom Thumb, and many others who are the ‘guests’ at the wedding. It makes an already whimsical ballet even more so.

The Rose Adagio is very challenging because you have to do the same thing with four different suitors. Basically, you’re doing a pas de deux four times. It’s an amazing feeling of accomplishment after you’re done. I always have a sigh of relief once I’m off stage!
