Director’s Note One of the most iconic couples of the 20th century was Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. The two became notorious outlaws at the height of the Great Depression and were surprisingly idolized for their undying love for each other and their dedication to their families. Nearly a century later, idol worship is still as American as apple pie, but the intensity by which we uplift the famous and infamous might be even greater. I wonder if Bonnie and Clyde were living today in our society with countless social media platforms and billions of active users, would they be media darlings, media fodder, or both? Would their ultimate fate be any different? On the surface, Bonnie & Clyde seems like a tragic love story of two toxic, but passionate, kids. But after further evaluation, I found it to be about much more than love, prison breaks, robberies, and murder. This show is a socio-political fable about the unintended creation of criminals. It is not your typical boymeets-girl story; it is more like a horror story. So how did these children get to be as famous as Al Capone, Pretty Boy Floyd, and John Dillinger? THE MEDIA! There were two ways to be famous in the 1930’s: you had to be in the papers or be on the screen. In the opening number of the show, Bonnie chooses the screen and Clyde chooses the papers. But in reality, the flash point in the couple’s road to infamy was Bonnie’s poetry. To satisfy demand from a hungry public, newspapers would publish anything Bonnie gave them—making her and Clyde stars. Of course, the public that was eager to build them up became even more eager to tear them down. Bonnie and Clyde were darlings when they were perceived as rebelling against the unpopular Great Depression-era establishment. But the tide of public opinion soon shifted, as the couple repeatedly robbed the working poor. After reports of the murder of two motorcycle cops on Easter Sunday, 1934, Bonnie and Clyde’s fate was sealed and the dark fairy tale was over…or was it? Here we are, 90 years later, still celebrating and reviling these American heroes and monsters. It’s a fascinating look at fame and our own values. I hope you enjoy.
