SPEAK VOLUMES.
THE OUTSPOKEN NEW 2017 IS A powerful stance. A confident look. Undeniable style. Often the things we don’t say speak the loudest. Like the design of the 2017 Lexus IS F SPORT. Its bold lines, sleek profile and luxe interior make a statement, even before you start the engine. Send a signal in the new IS 350, IS AWD or IS Turbo. F ROM T H E C E O & A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Welcome to The Nutcracker. During his lifetime, our founder Willam Christensen changed the sets, costumes and props for his iconic and historic version of The Nutcracker four times. This year, we bid farewell to the current physical production that has been a part of this holiday favorite for many years, as we begin work on what will be the fifth incarnation for “Mr. C’s” beloved classic. Thanks to a very generous gift from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, Ballet West is commissioning brand new Nutcracker sets, costumes and props to be unveiled in December, 2017 here at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theater. Keeping the brilliant choreography and the glorious Tchaikovsky music exactly the same, the new production is being designed to honor the past and history of Mr. C and E.T.A. Hoffmann while adding beauty, charm and joy with a dazzling new look and exciting new stage effects that will elevate the magic of this beloved family tradition into the future. Unveiling a new production of The Nutcracker is truly an important investment in Ballet West’s future. With it, we hope to make an ongoing commitment to the upkeep and future presentation of ALL of our big beloved story-book ballets. Along with The Nutcracker, productions such as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and many more, need constant refurbishment to keep them fresh, vibrant and in the best condition. Your support of our Nutcracker Campaign will allow us to continue to give you – our public – what you deserve, the consistently highest quality productions possible. We are inviting our Ballet West family to make a one-time Nutcracker Campaign contribution to attribute your name with The Nutcracker for the lifetime of this new production (approximately 25 years). There are many levels in which to participate, and they start at just $25. Imagine your name, or the names of your children and/or grandchildren, sewn into a costume or painted onto the back of a set piece or prop – connecting you for many years to this much loved classic. I am personally donating to this project because Mr. C’s vision is why I am here at Ballet West. Please join me in becoming part of Nutcracker history by playing a leading role in our Nutcracker Campaign and connecting your family to this timeless holiday classic. Help us keep it and all of our great story ballets alive! You can learn more at balletwest.org/nutcrackercampaign. Thank you again for joining us, and we hope to see you at many Ballet West performances to come. You are the reason we do what we do, and we are grateful for your continued support and your patronage. I wish each and every one of you the Happiest of Holidays. With Gratitude,
Adam Sklute CEO & Artistic Director Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, where he was a Soloist before rising through the ranks to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West, marked by both bottom line growth and elevated artistry, has been heralded by many publications, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. This year, Adam was promoted to the position of CEO and Artistic Director where he will also oversee the administrative operations of the Company.

T H E S TO RY THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children Clara and Fritz are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s Godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer. Herr Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once. That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure if she is dreaming or not, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber. After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and her Prince.
Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux,8072_Utah_Foodbank_Mills_Publishing_Magazine_Quarter_3_38 Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sled, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

I N F O CUS: T H E N U TCR AC K E R THE NUTCRACKER NOSTALGIA
by Josh Jones
The Nutcracker, Party Scene, 1955
Ballet West has the longest-running Nutcracker in America. You can imagine that with that title comes a lot of pride, a lot of nostalgia, and a “sleigh-load” of memories. Here are a just few from our Artists and Artistic Staff:
Bruce Caldwell, ballet master and company archivist
My first stage appearance in The Nutcracker was as Drosselmeyer’s Nephew, (a role that hadn’t been included in previous performances). I distinctly remember the moment the curtain rose, and I was hit by that powerful spot light. I felt that this just seemed to be the place I wanted to be, and the exhilaration I felt just being onstage in front of a big audience, with a full symphony orchestra, and all of the other dancers giving their best performance efforts. I guess you could say that was the moment I became aware of the “magic of the theater,” and that I was destined to continue my professional career chasing after it.
Jane Wood, ballet mistress One year we used fake ‘buns’ on our head to create a uniform ‘look’ on stage. Well, I remember during the snow scene that my bun fell off and I accidentally kicked it right in front of the Snow Queen and King. With the snow and fog on the ground, it just looked like a rat scurrying around
44
the stage as dancers started kicking it all around. It was hilarious, and we still laugh about it today!
Pamela Robinson, principal ballet mistress I’ve been doing this a while, so I have a lifetime of memories. If you could fill a trunk with memories, you’d need a warehouse to fit all the stories I’ve got. Through all of it—the countless rehearsals, the hundreds of performances, and the thousands of cast members, the thing I take away the most is family. The family I’ve made through the decades of learning, teaching, staging, and performing this production is truly wonderful. You grow close to one another, and you share a bond that cannot be replicated. I love my Nutcracker family.
Peter Christie, director of education and community outreach
One of my favorite parts of being involved in literally decades of The Nutcracker is the life-long friendships I have made. In particular, all the children that have danced in the production who come up to me and say “hello” when I’m out and about. Now, through social media, I have been able to watch those kids grow up, and we stay connected through Facebook. It is really wonderful to get messages from people remembering their time in The Nutcracker. We have shared something special and it’s always nice to reminisce.
I N F O CUS: T H E N U TCR AC K E R Christopher Ruud, principal dancer A very special memory for me is sharing the stage with my father. This wasn’t during Ballet West’s Nutcracker, but it was Mr. C’s version, when San Francisco Ballet still used his choreography. When I was young, I was cast as Nephew and my father played Drosselmeyer, and the two share quite a bit of time on stage together. I had watched him in this role from backstage as a very young child, and now I was there with him, in front of thousands. Of course, it’s not just the stage time, it’s the time spent in the studio, and the very quiet, shared moments too—the pre-show jitters, and walking home from the theatre with him each night. All I can say is that those memories are magical, and now that he is gone, I hold them very, very close.
Heather Thackeray, student ballet mistress and academy artistic liaison
It simply wouldn’t be Christmas for me without The Nutcracker. I’ve been involved with the Ballet West production for over thirty years, first dancing children’s roles before moving into the professional ranks, and now rehearsing and preparing the children for every Nutcracker
performance. I vividly recall the awe and wonder I felt as a young dancer when I discovered the magic of performing on stage. The year I was cast as Clara was like dancing in a dream. Every performance was special and unique. In fact, every performance seemed to have an unusual event that made it all the more memorable. One night my costume went missing in the middle of the performance. Following party scene, I made my exit, took off my party dress and prepared to put on my night gown, but there was no night gown to be found. The dresser assisting me had left the stage to go look for my nightgown. I was left alone, shaking nervously and wondering what I should do. Do I go on stage in just my pantaloons? Do I wait and miss my entrance? At the last moment the dresser came running towards me with a nightgown. My costume was still missing, but she had found another one to put on me. I barely made it on stage in time to fall asleep on the couch before Drosselmeyer enters. My costume was not found until after the performance was over. The stage crew all thought George “the Capitol Theatre ghost” must have moved it. To this day, no one knows what exactly happened to my costume.

I N F O CUS: T H E N U TCR AC K E R BECOMING CLARA
by Josh Jones
Olivia Huntsman with the Mouse King and the Nutcracker Prince.
It is a special honor to be cast as Clara in Ballet West’s The Nutcracker. Not only is it an iconic role, but for the serious dancer, it can launch her career. In The Nutcracker, Clara is a young girl who receives a toy Nutcracker for Christmas. As she falls asleep on Christmas Eve, she dreams of helping The Nutcracker defeat the Mouse King in a battle royale. The Nutcracker toy turns into a real prince, and together, Clara and her prince go on an adventure through the land of Snow and Sweets, meeting some very colorful characters in the process. While the part is a magical one, the reality of bringing Clara’s world to the stage takes an incredible amount of time, sweat, and hard work. It all starts in September, when more than 600 children converge on the Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre for auditions. It is an explosion of cuteness mixed with a bit of anxiety as kids await their turn. Late that same evening, children and
46
their parents are notified of their potential casting via an encrypted website. Two children dancing the role of Clara return this year: 13-year-old Olivia Huntsman and 12-year-old Ella Whitney. We wanted the perspective from these “veterans” of the stage: What is your favorite part of The Nutcracker? Ella: My favorite parts of The Nutcracker are the fight scene. There is so much excitement on stage, and I especially love watching the mice. It can be hard to act scared when the mice are on stage because they are so funny! Olivia: My favorite parts of Nutcracker are the party scene and snow scene. I love the energy of the party scene and the magical feeling when the snow is falling and I’m riding in the sleigh. It is an amazing feeling dancing the role of Clara... it’s a dream come true.
I N F O CUS: T H E N U TCR AC K E R What is the most difficult part for you of playing Clara? Technique, playing a character, something else? Ella: The hardest part for me are Clara’s different emotions. She does a lot of crying on stage! Olivia: The most difficult part is probably the quick changes. Sometimes your costume gets stuck and you have no time, and it’s really scary because when the music cue to enter the stage again, you have to be ready. Tell me about what your rehearsal schedule is like. Ella: I have regular ballet technique classes six days a week, and I usually have Nutcracker rehearsals three days a week after my technique classes. Some days, I am in class and rehearsal for six hours, which I love! Olivia: There are at least two or three rehearsals every week and they are usually at least an hour or two. Have you done other roles in Nutcracker? Ella: Yes! I have been very lucky to also perform as the tumbling Buffoon, Party Princess, and two years as Clara.
What is it like working with Company members? Ella: I love to dance with the Company dancers. They inspire me to work hard so I can be in a ballet company just like them when I grow up. Olivia: It is a great experience working with the Company dancers. I love to be a part of, and watching the Company rehearsals to see what the professional dancers are expected to do. It is a great learning experience getting to watch them during the Nutcracker rehearsals and shows. Anything else you’d like to tell patrons about dancing this iconic role? Ella: I love being a part of The Nutcracker, and I am honored to play the role of Clara. It makes the Christmas season more fun and magical, and I hope I can tell the story to the audience in an exciting way. Olivia: When the music starts at the very beginning and we are waiting back stage, all of the nervous energy goes away immediately, and at that moment, being a part of The Nutcracker is magical.
Olivia: I have been in the Nutcracker many times. My first year, I was a party princess. My second year, I was a buffoon. My third year, I was a buffoon and baby mouse. My fourth year, I had a Clara call-back, but my sister Mary Claire got the part and I was really happy for her I ended up Dancing Party Girl #1 (the yellow dress)...Last year was my fifth year in the Nutcracker and I made Clara. ... This year is my sixth year, and I am excited to dance the part of Clara again. Each year has been an amazing experience with many lifelong friendships made and memories to last forever. What was it like being told last year that you’d gotten the role of Clara? Ella: It was a very exciting day! I love the whole audition process, and it was a dream come true to be chosen as Clara. I couldn’t wait to start learning the role. Olivia: When I was told I got Clara last year, it was the best feeling ever.

CHOREOGRAPHER AND COMPOSER Willam F. Christensen, Ballet West Founder CHOREOGRAPHY, THE NUTCRACKER
Recognized as one of the leading pioneers in American dance, Willam Christensen, known affectionately as “Mr. C,” plated a key role in the artistic contributions to Utah and to the United States. Along with brothers Lew and Harold, Willam began his career with dance lessons from his uncle at the Christensen Academy in Brigham City, Utah. Together the brothers went on to a professional career in vaudeville, and then in 1937, established the oldest ballet company in the United States, the San Francisco Ballet. While with the San Francisco Ballet, Mr. C choreographed the first full-length version of The Nutcracker ballet ever performed in the United States. Christensen moved his family to Utah to nurse his wife’s ill health. In 1951, he founded the first ballet department at an American university, the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he formed the University Ballet Theatre, the first ballet company ever incorporated into a university. Mr. C’s contributions to dance also include producing the first full-length version of Coppélia ever to be mounted by an American choreographer and producing the first full-length Swan Lake in the United States. In addition, Mr. C produced the first American Cinderella and his version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird. In 1963, Willam Christensen, in conjuction with Glenn Walker Wallace, founded Ballet West under the name Utah Civic Ballet. Willam served as Artistic Director for Ballet West, and, under his direction, Ballet West has grown to become one of America’s leading ballet companies. After retiring as Artistic Director in 1978, Mr. C founded the Christensen Academy and continued teaching well into his 90’s. He served as special artistic advisor of Ballet West’s annual performances of The Nutcracker up until the time of his death, October 14, 2001. Reporting of his death at the age of 99, the San Francisco Chronicle called him, “the grandfather of American ballet.”
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky COMPOSITION, THE NUTCRACKER
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where George Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic and grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, and concerti for various instruments, operas and works for the piano. His creations for the ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty.

Have you ever wondered why Ballet West’s Nutcracker is the longest running in the United States? Or, how many jewels are sewn into a Nutcracker tutu? You can learn those details and see the fascinating history of the Nutcracker and get an insider’s glimpse of the new production coming in 2017 when you visit Nutcracker Memories, a free exhibit in the Capitol Room, (west side of lobby, behind concessions). Visit during the intermission and fill out the answers below to win a pair of Sleeping Beauty tickets, coming to the Capitol Theatre, February 10-26. Put your answers in the box inside the Capitol Room.
What was the budget for the first production of The Nutcracker in 1944? In what year did Ballet West first perform The Nutcracker? How many yards of netting does it take to make one Nutcracker tutu? How many costumes are in each performance of The Nutcracker? How many sets are being constructed for the new Nutcracker coming in 2017? Name

Cory Thorell, Properties Master.
EVERY PROP HAS A STORY by Amy Falls
Each destination to which Clara travels in The Nutcracker is inventively designed and carefully built by Ballet West’s several Production Departments. Among these, the Props Department oversees the ballet’s many magical objects, including the party girls’ dolls, and even Mother Buffoon. The mastermind behind the hundreds of props in The Nutcracker is Ballet West’s Properties Master, Cory Thorell. Thorell caught the “theatre bug” in high school, when he spent a summer working in the Prop Shop at the Pacific Conservatory of
70
the Performing Arts. He went on to graduate from the University of Utah’s Design and Stage Management program, and he also worked at the Utah Opera before being hired at Ballet West in 1998. Since then, Thorell has worked tirelessly to replace, find, and build almost all the props now seen in The Nutcracker. Thorell stays busy throughout the year, but Nutcracker season is perhaps the busiest time. “Generally, Nutcracker starts waking up from her summer nap around September,” says Thorell, and it is a race to Opening Night from
I N F O CUS: T H E N U TCR AC K E R there. However long and hard the work may be, Thorell mentions that it is also difficult not to be happy during Nutcracker season. “It is the children dancers that make it so magical, as their dreams are coming true right there, right then.” He works with the children’s cast to ensure their safety backstage, and that they handle the dolls and other props with care. (To this day, adults in the grocery store who appeared in Nutcracker as a children approach Thorell with a “secret handshake” of sorts passed down between generations of little Buffoons.) In late November, The Nutcracker props are packed into the front half of a semi-truck and transported from the Ballet West warehouse to the Capitol Theatre. Thorell was once tasked by Artistic Director Adam Sklute to build a wheeled chestnut cart, now seen in the first act, but there was even more to the challenge: the cart needed to not only be functional and contribute to the story, but also needed to fit in the one remaining space in the Tetris-packed Nutcracker truck! Thorell rose to the challenge, and now the chestnut cart fits like a puzzle piece into that last compartment. Thorell has also updated the party boys’ horns from tin tree ornaments to replicas of World War I trumpets. The seat Clara sits on during the Arabian dance is no longer a corduroy-covered stool but a carved, bejeweled elephant. The
mechanical Doll in the party scene now has a key made of real metal on her back rather than one of painted cardboard. Thorell has also reimagined the Stahlbaum’s grandfather clock, as seen in the First Act. A Salt Lake native, Thorell remembers seeing the grandfather clock in Ballet West’s production since he was a child. Originally made by Dr. Merrill Lessley (whose name is painted on it), the clock is the oldest Nutcracker prop still in rotation. The clock has been in use since Founder Willam Christensen was the Company’s Artistic Director. The grandfather clock was originally just a two-dimensional face. Thorell has since added carved, painted sides to match, making the clock three-dimensional. The grandfather clock is one of the few props that will be moving into the newly designed Nutcracker production that premieres in 2017. Set Designer John Wayne Cook is working with the current design of the clock to incorporate new furniture and color schemes alongside it, creating a beautiful new house for the Stahlbaums and their grandfather clock. As you watch The Nutcracker this year, remember, as Thorell says: “Every prop has a story!”
