F ROM T H E C E O & A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Welcome! Attending a live performance is an experience like no other, and going to the ballet is certainly one of the best. Ballet is an amazing art form that encompasses dance, music, art, athletics, storytelling, as well as theater. It can transport us to another world, and it can take us away from the pressures of our daily lives. Exposing children to the fine arts from an early age is a critical component of a person’s development, and I believe that it’s important that families enjoy going together as often as possible. That was my main motivation in creating an on-going Family Series for Ballet West, as I wanted a program each year that could be counted upon to engage, delight – and speak to - individuals of all ages. At this performance, in just over one hour (with an intermission in the middle), we will bring you one of the world’s great fairy-tales – The Little Mermaid. Throughout, we have intentionally incorporated narration to tell Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, as it helps to clarify the action and story for all of our audience members, regardless of their age. The music for our Little Mermaid is by Leo Delibes. It was originally written for another ballet – the rarely performed 19th Century work – Sylvia. Our choreographic team - Pamela Robinson-Harris and Peggy Dolkas - have done a brilliant job bringing out the charm, humor and pathos that this score and the story invoke. Our design team has also created a spectacular world of undersea kingdoms, waves, ships and palaces. And, the ballet is performed by the wonderful artists of Ballet West II and many talented students from all levels of our Ballet West Academy. I hope you agree that the final result is a production filled with humor, sadness, and beauty that ultimately uplifts our souls. You have our commitment that we at Ballet West will always work diligently to give you and your family “life experiences” that will remain fondly in your memories for many years to come. I hope you find our production of The Little Mermaid to be one of them. Thank you for your patronage,

Adam Sklute Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, where he was a Soloist before rising through the ranks to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West, marked by both bottom line growth and elevated artistry, has been heralded by many publications, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. This year, Adam was promoted to the position of CEO and Artistic Director where he will also oversee the administrative operations of the Company.

Léo Delibes MUSIC

Léo Delibes was born on February 21st 1836 in Saint-Germain-duVal. His mother was a talented amateur musician and he was the grandson of an opera singer. In 1847, Delibes began studies at the Paris Conservatory, learning composition with Adolphe Adam. In his second year of study, he began having voice lessons, although his organ playing would surpass his skills as a singer. He played for rehearsals and was chorus master at the Paris Opéra from 1864 and was appointed as organist for Saint-Pierre-de-Chaillot in 1865. The work that brought him into the public’s attention in earnest was his first ballet, Coppélia, in 1870. His output is known to have had significant influence upon Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns and Debussy, with Tchaikovsky holding Delibes, and his ballet Sylvia, in particularly high esteem. Delibes died at the age of 54 on January 16th 1891 in Paris.
