About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet.

willam christensen, founder of ballet west

Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 38 company members, 16 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to our spring 2021 program, Precious Gems. It is with great joy that we return to the stage live for the first time since November. For this program, we follow many of the same health and safety guidelines from last fall, but thanks to rapid testing for all the dancers, we are able to perform for you without masks and expand some of the partnering between company members. We do not take this gift lightly. In November, when we presented Nine Sinatra Songs program, much of the show was constructed specifically for this challenging time; with two of the modern creations addressing the complicated world around us during the pandemic. For this program, I wanted to present an almost Gala-like affair that showcased and challenged our brilliant artists. After so many months off, and with everything in flux, dancers needed the push that pure classical technique offers. I also felt I owed it to our audience to experience the glittering beauty and athleticism of classical ballet, as we had to cancel The Nutcracker and postpone Romeo & Juliet. Moreover, we are so thrilled to be able to have our orchestra back, working in a small ensemble for two of our offerings. The result is a program that I am calling a glittering jewel-box of solos duets and small ensembles. The program opens with the final pas de deux and variations from Aladdin. Originally created as part of the full story for our Family Classics Series by Ballet West Principal Rehearsal Director Pamela Robinson Harris, to music of Edvard Grieg and Kouchyar Shahroudiit, it makes a lovely and vibrant opening to the program. Next, we present the Ballet West premiere of Aria, Val Caniparoli’s elegant and sensual solo for a man. To the music of George Frederick Handel, the work is at once mysterious and regal. This ballet will be accompanied by a soprano and members of the Ballet West Orchestra. Immediately following is George Balanchine’s high flying, romp Tarantella a non-stop display of energy for a woman and a man to the music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk. This will be the first time Ballet West presents this at the Capitol Theater and the work is pure fun-filled joy. The woman’s solo from one of Val Caniparoli’s most popular and often requested works--Lambarena, comes next with its unique blend of classical and

10

From the Artistic Director African movement mirroring the music. With its dynamic power, it is clear why it is such an audience favorite. We follow with the Ballet West premiere of Anton Dolin’s 1957 pyrotechnical showcase for men--Variations for Four an exciting set of dances that highlight the athletic strength and clarity of our male dancers. I have chosen next to offer two alternating works, for some performances we will be presenting the female solo from Gerald Arpino’s Kettentanz, a delicate invocation of old Vienna to the music of Johann Mayer that we presented only once as part of a Gala many years ago. Alternatively, will present the lovely Sicilienne solo from George Balanchine’s and Gabrielle Faure’s Emeralds as a special tribute to our Principal Artist Katherine Lawrence who will be retiring from the stage after this season to join the faculty of the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy. We will miss Katherine’s beautiful performances but I am so happy she will be staying in the Ballet West family passing on her great knowledge to our students. We continue with the Ballet West premiere of the male duet from Lar Lubovitch’s Concerto 622, his moving and evocative creation to the music of Mozart. Members of the Ballet West Orchestra will also accompany this work. Finally, we close the program with Petipa’s rousing variations from Paquita as staged by Elena Kunikova. This delightful suite of dances is being presented this year with a slightly smaller corps to give more space on stage but it remains a bright, glittering, and spectacular way to end the program. This year has placed so many demands on all of us, and I am grateful for the sacrifices our Staff, Crew, Musicians, and Dancers have all made as we persevered and moved forward despite the immense difficulties. I could not be more proud of the great spirit of this company and I am so grateful as well, for you, our beloved audience. I hope this program brings you as much joy as it brings us. The future looks bright and we look forward to being together in full as we move forward into next year. Enjoy Precious Gems,

Adam Sklute Artistic Director Ballet West Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

From the Executive Director Dear Ballet West Family, This spring, with flowers blooming, skies clearing, and people returning to live venues, it seems like an appropriate time for optimism. We have weathered a year that was unpredictable for most and difficult for too many. As we enter the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, I find myself filled with hope and joy. Personally, I have been in awe of our community in the last year. We have experienced an earthquake, inland hurricane, and of course, the pandemic. Through it all, we cared for our neighbors, heeded local mandates, and are emerging buoyant. The performing arts around the country have also suffered and Ballet West has faced uncertainty, but thanks to the generosity of our community, we are navigating the rough waters. In November, faced with the cancellation of the 65th annual Nutcracker production, KSL-TV promptly stepped in. Not only did they offer the company free airtime with no commercials, they broadcasted The Nutcracker three times--extraordinary! KSL-TV also allowed Ballet West to embed appeals into the ‘intermission’ of the broadcast and I am happy to report that our community heard our pleas and responded with a wonderful outpouring of support for the company. City and county officials have also been remarkably helpful, keeping us informed at every step, relaying directives, providing urgently needed financial support, and working with us to reopen safely. Moreover, the federal government has provided grants to help minimize personnel reductions. While our online content and KSL-TV broadcast of The Nutcracker were very successful, I think most would agree that ballet is best viewed live. Ballet is both ephemeral and ethereal. There is no substitute for being in the theatre and witnessing the athleticism of our amazing dancers in person, and among audiences who share the electricity that only

From the Executive Director comes from live performances. That is why I’m happy to welcome you back to our home. I hope you enjoy these Precious Gems! Sincerely,

Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

Profiles GEORGE BALANCHINE

Choreographer, Tarantella and Emeralds George Balanchine is regarded as one of the foremost contemporary choreographers in the world of ballet. He came to America in 1933 and established the School of American Ballet in 1934. In 1948, Balanchine established the New York City Ballet and presented its first program, which consisted of Concerto Barocco, Orpheus, and Symphony in C. Balanchine served as ballet master for the New York City Ballet from 1948 until his death in 1983, choreographing the majority of the productions the company has introduced since its inception. An authoritative catalogue lists 425 works created by Balanchine in his lifetime. Balanchine’s style has been described as neoclassical. A gifted musician himself, his response to Romantic Classicism was to deemphasize the plot in his ballets, preferring to let “dance and music be the star of the show.” Nevertheless, tantalizing hints of a story color his ballets such as Apollo, Harlequinade, Liebeslieder Walzer, and La Sonnambula. The New York City Ballet and School of American Ballet remain dedicated to the preservation of Balanchine’s ideals.

SIR ANTON DOLIN

Choreographer, Variation for Four Sir Anton Dolin, born Patrick Healey Kay, was the first internationally acclaimed British Dancer Noble, whose career began with Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.

©Anton Dolin Foundation

Together with Alicia Markova, Dolin was instrumental in the formation of the Vic-Wells Ballet, founded by Lilian Baylis and Ninette de Valois, which developed into The Royal Ballet. At that time, Dolin’s reputation was akin to that Rudolf Nureyev later enjoyed. In 1935, Markova and Dolin left the Vic-Wells Ballet to form their own company, the Markova-Dolin Ballet, which performed and toured for several years. The two young Diaghilev alumni formed one of the great partnerships of classical ballet. Anton Dolin first performed the role of Albrecht in 1937, partnering Olga Spessivtzeva, who taught him the role and coached him, passing on this ballet’s great tradition. After working with the great Russian ballerina, Dolin was inspired to stage his own production of the 19th-century ballet, which was much acclaimed and performed around the world. In 1940, Dolin joined New York’s newly formed Ballet Theater as a principal dancer. He soon began to stage classics, such as Swan Lake and Giselle, for the company, as well as creating his own choreography, including his own version of Pas de Quatre.

36

Profiles As a dancer, Dolin repeatedly found himself the male star in ballet companies that were launched under his auspices or in which he played an influential role. He became known as an excellent partner. Ninette de Valois defined his style as follows: “In the mid-1920s, his dancing brought a spark of virility to the male classical dance picture. It was Bronislava Nijinska who first brought out his particular virtuoso form of attack”. In 1949, Anton Dolin founded a new British company, Festival Ballet (which became London Festival Ballet in 1950) with Alicia Markova. As its Artistic Director and Principal Dancer until 1961, he presented an eclectic repertory and toured widely. As a result, the company helped to introduce ballet to many new audiences. The company is now known as English National Ballet. One of Dolin’s most famous stagings, Pas de Quatre, pays homage to 19th-century Romantic ballet with his own choreography for four female dancers, who portray four celebrated ballerinas. In 1957, the choreographer created a modern counterpart for four male dancers in his virtuoso showpiece Variations for Four. In his early years, as Principal Dancer, Musical Theater Artist and Actor, later as Artistic Director, Choreographer, Teacher, Coach and Lecturer, Dolin was a familiar figure in the international ballet and theater world. A witty raconteur, he was the author of six books, including several memoirs. For his outstanding services to ballet throughout his life Anton Dolin was knighted in 1980 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

Profiles GERALD ARPINO

Choreographer, Kettentanz Gerald Arpino was born in Staten Island, New York, and died in 2008 in Chicago. He received his early dance training in Seattle by Mary Ann Wells. He co-founded The Joffrey Ballet with Robert Joffrey in 1956 and served as Associate Director for many years. Upon Joffrey’s death in 1988, Arpino succeeded him as Artistic Director. In 1995, he moved The Joffrey Ballet to Chicago. A leading dancer with the company in its early years, Arpino choreographed his first work for the Joffrey, Ropes, in 1961. Shortly thereafter, he became the Joffrey’s resident choreographer and to-date has created more than one-third of the Company’s repertoire. His amazingly diverse work ranges from social commentary to pure dance gems. His ballets are in the repertoires of companies around the world. Arpino is the first choreographer commissioned to create a ballet honoring the Office of the American Presidency: The Pantages and the Palace Present Two-A-Day. He was the first American commissioned to choreograph a ballet for a city, San Antonio, Jamboree. In 1993, Arpino produced America’s first full-evening rock ballet, Billboards, set to the music of Prince. In addition, Arpino is the only choreographer to have had four of his ballets performed at the White House. Arpino served on numerous boards and councils including the national advisory council of the ITI/USA International Ballet Competition and the board of the Dance Notation Bureau. He was a member of the Arts Advisory Committee of the New York International Festival of the Arts. He served as an advisor to the Artists Committee for The Kennedy Center Honors. He was a member of the Board of The Chicago Academy For The Arts. Among many awards and tributes, he held honorary doctorates from The College of Staten Island, City University of New York, and Wagner College. He was a recipient of the 1974 Dance Magazine Award and the Vaslav Nijinsky Medal. He was honored twice by the Chicago Tribune as one of the “Chicagoans of the Year” for his important contribution to the arts in Chicago and the world.

ERIN DOUGLAS VOELLINGER

Clarinet, Concerto Six Twenty-Two

Erin is the Principal Clarinet player for the Ballet West Orchestra. She began her tenure with the orchestra in 2014 and continues to be thrilled at every opportunity to play with the group. Before joining the Ballet West Orchestra, she played a season with the Utah Symphony and was the principal clarinetist with the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007-2014. In addition to her work with various groups around the Salt Lake area, including the Utah Symphony, studio recording, and chamber works, Erin is currently an adjunct clarinet professor at the University of Utah. While Erin loves playing ballet literature, she also likes to spice up her musical life with something completely different. She is the founder, contractor, and music arranger of the Park City Polka Players. She and her husband both play in the polka band along with other Ballet West Orchestra members. They have performed at Swiss Days, Snowbird Oktoberfest, the Park City Canyons Oktoberfest, the Utah Motorsports Oktoberfest, several breweries, and many other smaller parties. Erin grew up in Littleton, Colorado, and began playing the clarinet when she was handed her stepmother’s old instrument in the 6th grade. Having already had a couple of years of piano lessons under her belt, she took to the clarinet very quickly. She teaches both clarinet and piano lessons in Park City, Utah, where she and her husband live with their one-and-a-half-year-old son. They enjoy spending as much time outside as possible-skiing, biking, hiking, paddle boarding, camping, and playing ultimate frisbee.

Profiles MARIUS PETIPA

Choreographer, Paquita Marius Petipa (1818–1910) was one of the most influential figures of classical ballet. His choreography forms the basis of The Royal Ballet’s productions of The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote, La Bayadère and Coppélia, among others. Petipa was born in Marseilles. His father was a dancer, and Petipa began dancing in his father’s traveling company aged nine. Aged 16 he joined Théâtre Nantes, where he also created a number of ballets. He studied in Paris with Auguste Vestris before going on to work as a dancer around France. In May 1847 he arrived in St Petersburg and two months later made his debut as principal dancer and ballet master of the Mariinsky, starring in his re-staging of Joseph Mazilier’s Paquita. His breakthrough as a choreographer came in 1859 with his production of La Fille du pharaon, and in 1869 he was made Chief Choreographer. In addition to creating original works such as Don Quixote (1869) and La Bayadère (1877), he restaged preexisting works, including Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot’s Giselle (1884) and Arthur Saint-Léon’s Coppélia (1884). Petipa’s 1890 production of Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty was followed by productions of The Nutcracker (1892) and Swan Lake (1895), both created with Lev Ivanov. His last great work was Raymonda (1898), before he retired in 1903. Petipa’s ballets were grand spectacles that made magnificent use of the corps de ballet and placed the lead ballerina centre stage. His theatre and school became a model for all ballet around the globe throughout the 20th century.
