About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet.

willam christensen, founder of ballet west

Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 37 company members, 16 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to Willam Christensen’s renowned and magical ballet, The Nutcracker. On Christmas Eve in 1944, Ballet West’s founder, “Mr. C,” presented the first full-length American production of this holiday treat in San Francisco, thus beginning a national tradition. After moving back to Utah, in 1954, he premiered it with his newly formed Utah Civic Ballet, the predecessor to Ballet West and for every holiday season between then and 2019 it had a solid unbroken run making it the longest running Nutcracker in America and perhaps the world. Sadly, last season in 2020 we were not able to present Mr. C’s perennial classic live and in person, so we are overjoyed to return this year to a live presentation of this beloved classic accompanied by our Ballet West orchestra. Last year, however, while we were not able to produce The Nutcracker live, we were blessed to be able to bring it to audiences on television thanks to KSL TV and Kaleidoscope Productions. It was wonderful to keep our holiday tradition going remotely and we hope to continue to bring you our wonderful shows on TV and digitally, but nothing beats the experience of live theater. With a cast of close to 50 adult performers and over 75 children in any given show, and approximately 40 musicians and singers producing the much-loved Tchaikovsky score, Mr. C’s version of The Nutcracker is a feast for the eyes, ears, and the soul. It remains in many ways faithful to the original 1892 Russian concept, but he brings a uniquely American sensibility to the storytelling. This comes, I am convinced, from his years touring the country in Vaudeville. Over his years as a director, Mr. C tinkered with his original work many times, changing sets and costumes four times, and even authorizing his

From the Artistic Director successors to modify aspects of the choreography, but he never lost sight of what made his ballet magical – its joy, its humor, and its heart. It is a celebration of love, family, and humanity. So welcome back to our live performances. We’re grateful to be doing what we do best. Dance for you! We wish you the happiest of holidays.

Adam Sklute Artistic Director Ballet West

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

THE NUTCRACKER 21-22 SEASON

19

From the Executive Director I am pleased and proud to welcome you to Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker, America’s oldest and longest running Nutcracker. Choreographed by our beloved founder, Mr. C in 1944 for San Francisco Ballet, this first full version of the ballet set to Tchaikovsky’s sparkling and memorable score started a tradition that has been going strong for more than 75 years. While the pandemic interrupted the 76th consecutive year that Mr. C’s iconic production would have been seen by live audiences, we were fortunate last December to share this amazing production with audiences in Utah and beyond thanks to a generous partnership with KSL TV. For children, The Nutcracker is an escape. The magic of the holidays, combined with the story by E.T.A. Hoffman, provide a unique experience for children and their families year after year. The tradition of attending The Nutcracker has been passed down from generation to generation and it shows no sign of waning. In fact, Ballet West’s Nutcracker has seen exceptionally strong demand from audiences this month, due perhaps in part from a suspension of live performances last season but also due to how important the arts are now, more than ever to audiences young and old alike. Bringing this production to you is the culmination of months of hard work of rehearsals for our four casts featuring more than 300 children who have been selected for numerous roles through auditions. Their ability to persevere through restrictions imposed by the pandemic is remarkable, a true testament to their dedication. Furthermore, none of what you see onstage would be possible without Ballet West’s outstanding staff of rehearsal directors, all of whom take great pride in fulfilling Mr. C’s vision of a magical Christmas Eve fairy tale. I am honored to be part of the Ballet West family and share this incredible production with you, and I am humbled by the tremendous support this production receives from the community through ticket sales as well as contributions. Without such a commitment from our public, mounting America’s first Nutcracker would be challenging if not impossible.

20

From the Executive Director On behalf of all of us at Ballet West, may The Nutcracker and the holidays bring you closer and create wonderful memories for you and your families. Warm wishes, Sincerely, Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

THE STORY THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s Godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once. That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure if she is dreaming or not, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber. After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and King. Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian, and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

Profiles Willam F. Christensen

Choreographer, The Nutcracker

Recognized as one of the leading pioneers in American dance, Willam Christensen, known affectionately as “Mr. C,” played a key role in the artistic contributions to Utah and to the United States. Along with brothers Lew and Harold, Willam began his career with dance lessons from his uncle at the Christensen Academy in Brigham City, Utah. Together the brothers went on to a professional career in vaudeville, and then in 1937, established the oldest ballet company in the United States, the San Francisco Ballet. While with the San Francisco Ballet, Mr. C choreographed the first fulllength version of The Nutcracker ever performed in the United States. Christensen moved his family to Utah to nurse his wife’s ill health. In 1951, he founded the first ballet department at an American university, the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he formed the University Ballet Theatre, the first ballet company ever incorporated into a university. Mr. C’s contributions to dance also include producing the first full-length version of Coppélia ever to be mounted by an American choreographer and producing the first full-length Swan Lake in the United States. In addition, Mr. C produced the first American Cinderella and his version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird. In 1963, Willam Christensen, in conjuction with Glenn Walker Wallace, founded Ballet West under the name Utah Civic Ballet. Willam served as Artistic Director for Ballet West, and, both under and following his direction, Ballet West has grown to become one of America’s leading ballet companies. After retiring as Artistic Director in 1978, Mr. C founded the Christensen Academy and continued teaching well into his 90’s. He served as special artistic advisor for Ballet West’s annual performances of The Nutcracker up until his death on October 14, 2001. Reporting on his death at the age of 99, the San Francisco Chronicle called him “the grandfather of American ballet.”

Profiles Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Composer, The Nutcracker

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where George Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic, and grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, and concerti for various instruments, as well as operas and works for the piano. His creations for ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty.

In Memory of Angela Dittmar March 27, 1961 – April 22, 2021 Angela was a major contributor in building the current Ballet West Nutcracker costumes designed by David Heuvel. She was our Colleague, Our Confidant, Our Friend, Our Teacher. She knew the secret alchemy of love. She turned distance into closeness. Routine into adventure. Stillness into action. Illness into strength. Upset into empathy. Hurt into compassion. She was truly a Wonder of a Woman. She also leaves us wondering what the world will be like without her, but also grateful for the time we shared with this delightfully theatrical spirit.

Advertiser Support This playbill would not be possible without the advertisers who support it. Their patronage means information is available to you without cost to Ballet West.
