10 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

There’s a new group hanging out on LIRR platforms on Saturday nights—women heading into NYC for an alternative girls’ night out at the gym. Barry’s Bootcamp, located in Manhattan and the Hamptons, offers a cool setting to sweat off the calories while having a great time with your friends. Barry’s popular Saturday Night Dance Party combines club and cardio, according to Joey Gonzalez, COO of Barry’s Bootcamp. Joey says the idea came from “avid bootcampers who said they wanted to take advantage of a Saturday night when they didn’t feel like going out but still wanted to go do something fun and clubby.” The intense class offers a traditional bootcamp-style workout with a twist: a live DJ, healthy snacks, go-go dancers, a disco ball and theme nights. Manhattan’s Uplift Studio offers a similar program. Their “Raise the Bar” class begins with a 45-minute mix of cardio and strength training, followed by wine, cocktails, or a beer-tasting session at the Flatiron studio. “There are two things that create a happy healthy environment for women: physical fitness and a social life,” says Uplift co-founder Leanne Shear. “We brought those two things together under one roof.” We’ll raise our glasses to that! Addicted to trendy coffee drinks? Bubble tea is a drink that will put Starbucks lattes to shame. The tea-based drink usually consists of milk, sugar, tiny tapioca balls, and comes in a variety of flavors. The tapioca pearls resting at the bottom are what makes the tea so unique. They are derived from the cassava fruit and are caramelized, giving them a gummylike consistency and black color. Entre in Great Neck is one of the few places on Long Island to sell the drink delight. Their green and black tea is steeped fresh every morning, and they offer myriad flavors. Kevin Selvakumar, the drink maker at Entre, says, “Passion fruit and peach, those are very popular amongst the neighborhood. Entre also offers a variety of tapioca pearls, such as the yogurt pop pearl. You sip them up, pop them in your mouth, and get a burst of yogurt flavor.” (10 Grace Ave., Great Neck, EntreCafe.com)
