I loved putting this issue together. ReBeverly Fortune searching what people predict will become Art Director popular and then talking to the experts in Jon Sasala their fields to get their input before decidLifestyle Editor ing which are the most topical trends to Sara Anne Fingerman report is not only fun to do, it’s important Production for our readers to know just what the heck Jon Chim we can look forward to in the coming year. Jeff Main I find it much cooler to look to the Digital future than to look back. Michael Conforti 2015 means new opportunities for Contributors growth. It’s the year that we will trade in Tim Bolger Jaime Franchi stereotypes and embrace who we are as Rashed Mian individuals. According to a 2015 trend Spencer Rumsey report by Mintel, “People are dispelling Christopher Twarowski the constraints of gender expectations and Interns empowering each other to express their Rosie Flore genuine selves.” Bea Arner 2015 will be the year that Hillary Clinton makes the historical decision of whether she will run for the Oval Office, while Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Making a difference with purposeful and inspired actions will replace those people who have been self-serving and greedy. Women-owned businesses will flourish in the coming year at one and a half times the national average, according to statistics, and as significant drivers of the economy, women will change the face of how we do business locally and globally. How these women-owned businesses are financed will also change as women will force the banks to pry open their vaults. According to Credit Donkey, New York is third in the nation with women-owned businesses by state and first in a Metro area ahead of Los Angeles and Chicago. Women-owned businesses have been given the stage and this year they will take over the spotlight. 2015 will be the year that we use our influence and networks to help other women grow their businesses. This is the year that female angels will bestow their wealth of knowledge and capital to help their sisters develop and market their ideas and products. In 2015, you will get to be the best that you can be. Enjoy the issue and happy New Year! Warm Regards, Beverly Beverly@MilieuLI.com

It’s game-on for board games, so put on your best poker face and get ready to play. Families and party-goers are turning off their phones and playing in real time with cards, dice and pieces you move with your fingers, instead of a mouse. The experience of playing with other people, watching their body language and facial expressions and experiencing the joy of winning (or the agony of defeat) is back, and it’s better than ever.

The print is easy to incorporate into any outfit, and top designers like Joseph Altuzarra and Michael Kors have been using this “grown up gingham” on everything from skirts to layering pieces.

It has provided people with a new way to promote or support their cause. With social media at everyone’s fingertips, Clicktivism gives consumers a huge platform to vent their frustrations and fight for their rights. And many organizations are paying attention to these viral revolts. (Clicktivist.org)

We sought out those who blaze their own trail. Some trends might only last a season, others a lifetime. Milieu Magazine’s astute editorial team researched national trends and then asked our local experts what they predict will be trending on Long Island in 2015.

DATING

Compiled by Sara Anne Fingerman

Local Dating: For 2015, we’re seeing a trend in physical activities. Many couples are opting to go on bike rides, rock climbing and hiking as opposed to just dinner and a movie.” - Maureen Tara Nelson, MTN Matchmaking, MTNMatchmaking.com

National: The Grade Dating App The Grade is the latest in a steady stream of dating apps to launch that solemnly swears that dating will be different for women. The Grade makes use of some secret algorithm that assigns actual letter grades using information like responsiveness and message quality.” – Kate Drie, writer, Jezebel.com

“Go-Givers” National: homes for heroes

AREAA has founded Homes for Heroes, a program that honors those who have served our country through a housing lottery grant program; providing financial assistance of up to $10,000 to minority first-time homebuyers who are members or Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Local: PinkTie.org, “go-Givers”

Many people refer to themselves as go-getters, but how often do you hear a business professional lead with the fact that they are a “go-giver”? Mike Cave, the founder of PinkTie.org and CEO of 1st Equity Title & Closing Services has coined this term for himself. On Long Island, PinkTie.org is known as a philanthropic organization that raises a substantial amount of money for breast cancer research. Cave believes that by paying it forward, not only do you get the chance to raise money for worthy causes, you can change the conversation during business meetings allowing you and your business to be seen in a different light. (1stEquity.com)

Hair Trends

National: Beach Hair and Long Bobs

Low-maintenance styles are taking the place of swept-over curls and long bed heads. - TheFashionTag.com

Local: TOP KNOTS & BEACHY The Mai Tai (messy, beachy hair) has long been a popular style for us at the Drybar and 2015 will bring even more messy and tousled hair. I say the more texture, the better!” - Alli Webb, founder, Drybar Roslyn Heights, TheDryBar.com Long bobs or collarbone-length cuts are hot for 2015. Healthy, lustrous hair is beautiful and always on-trend. Add a glossing treatment to give an extra kick of shine. Top knots, ballerina buns and sock buns are still trending and are a quick way to dress up a look for day or night.” - Adriana Vater, Creative Director & Co-Founder of Spa Adriana, Huntington, SpaAdriana.com

Women in Business National: women seize power positions

According to a new study by Pew Research, women have continued to seize power positions in the workplace. “Those in the top 20 percent of financial performance have 37 percent of their leaders as women and 12 percent of their leaders are high-potential women.”

Local: women seize power positions Women have given themselves permission to succeed. They are speaking the language of business and capitalizing on their greatest strengths; to build relationships and understand the needs of their constituents. This rate of change is not going to slow down anytime soon!” - Ellen Cooperperson, CEO, Cooperperson Performance Consultants, Cooperperson.com

MOVIES & TELEVISION National:

Local: LEGO ARCHITECTURE

Smaller, Smarter Films 2015 will offer storytellers with smaller budgets a perfect opportunity to present audiences with thoughtful alternatives to films not based on massive explosions.” - Ron Mwangaguhunga, writer, Tribeca Film Festival, TribecaFilm.Com

Education National: eSpark

Auto Trend Premium colors, lighter, stronger metals, composites and plastic materials are offered by manufacturers for fuel savings, “fancy pants” desires and, of course, safety. Airbags will be less obvious. Windshields will become prescriptive information screens. More lights, cameras and EDR’s (Event Data Recorders) ensure that vehicles will have a dated concerto of facts, meaning privacy will become an issue.” - Marie A. Malerba, 1042 Collision, Farmingdale, 1042Collision.com

eSpark is a platform to help school districts effectively use iPads along with the vast number of educational apps that are available to create a personalized iPad curriculum to increase student engagement and achievement.

Local: INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION & eSPARK eSpark is an application for the iPad that is customized for the individual. We build the application based on these scores and what the individual needs help with.” - Dr. Michael Nagler, Superintendent of Mineola Public Schools

Local: MOVIES TO TV

We’ll also be seeing sequels for older films like Jurassic Park, Dumb and Dumber 2, Star Wars VII and Ghost Busters 3. Home Improvement National: MINIMALIST MODERN

Cleaner lines and a more minimalist modern vibe was the newest trend as reported by The Huffington Post.

Décor Trend

National: bold patterns

Local: SQUARES & BANQUETTES “Less is more” is the trend for 2015. People are looking for easy maintenance, clean lines, less dust collecting details and putting the focus on comfort and durability. Square shapes are trending more, as seen in hardware, faucet detail, sinks and decorative tile accents. Soft neutral tones, especially whites, pale greys and taupe will be the top selling colors in kitchen and bath materials. Kitchen banquettes (nooks or seating areas, connected to cabinetry) are also coming back in a big way. It’s all about being able to have a beautiful project that you actually use and enjoy.” - Alure Home Improvements, East Meadow, Alure.com

“Deep rich hues, bold patterns in neutral colors and organic elements are hot for 2015,” says Taniya Nayak, interior designer and DIY HGTV television personality.

Local: textures 2015 will see a strong emphasis on textures, not only on MissoniHome’s soft accessories, but also on our furniture. We’ll have sanded mirror and tables made to look like lace, macramé embroideries, laser-etched finishes, corduroy-textured sofas and more. I think consumers will be looking to really experience their home goods, not just use them.” - Roxane Mosleh, Owner, MissoniHome Hamptons, MissoniHomeHamptons.com

Weddings with personality are on-trend for 2015. Couples are immersing their individual style into their wedding day, wanting the details to express who they are through every detail, making their special day exclusively their own in a meaningful way.

Vintage INspired The 2015 bride is wearing ivory and wedding dresses are bringing us back to 1930s’ vintage style, with covered lace throughout. Many of these new vintageinspired dresses have a detailed illusion back with a traditional look that is stunning.” Dress: Leigh by designer Sophia Tolli)

old world elegance high & low are on trend “Up do’s are both high and low and on-trend for 2015. Sleek up-do’s with large, straighter chignons, creating designs with the hair itself is a work of art. Hair accessories are not needed for this look. Down do’s with elegant finger waves, full dipped-out waves or a more subtle version that’s parted on the side and swept over the shoulder is also on-trend for 2015.” - Cindy Valencia, Bocu Salon & Spa, Commack, BocuSalonandSpa.com

While bling was the thing in 2014, wedding cakes are moving in two divergent directions in 2015. Creativity is key. Brides want to design a cake that is as unique as her dreams. Avant Lori Horowitz Artist, Owner/Operator of Studio 5404, a non-profit cultural arts organization

In the art world, mainstream artists have many venues to showcase their work. For the non-traditional artist, the opportunities are more sporadic, especially on Long Island. To change that trend, Long Island artist Lori Horowitz is bringing vibrant alternative art, previously found only in Manhattan, Chelsea and the Hamptons to the South Shore at Studio 5404, a non-profit cultural arts organization in Massapequa. With her new space, Horowitz hopes to enrich the local community by sharing the art of under-represented and emerging artists by bringing a bit of the New York art scene to Long Island. “New York City is the arts center of the world and we’re only an hour away,” Horowitz says, “but the South Shore of Long Island seems to be untouched and estranged from this rich cultural resource.” In just a short time, Horowitz is garnering a following and has shown the artwork of over 100 artists from the tri-state area since she opened the artspace in June 2013. “Much of Long Island art is about landscapes, water and traditional works,” she says. “We are bringing poets, sculptors, musicians, performance artists, video artists and film makers together so they can share their knowledge and possibly work together.” According to Horowitz, artists at Studio

5404 learn more about conceptual reasoning, evoking emotions and creating art for other than decorative purposes. “We are integrating the arts and bringing in different types of work and educating the public,” says Horowitz, who is also a union scenic artist and owner of Environ Vision Designs, where she crafts interactive displays, scenery and large sculptures for international clients. Locally, Horowitz found an opportunity to display artwork right behind her studio on the 65 foot cement wall that she and her son Ari built. They brought in emerging graffiti artists, and well-known artists who were involved in the graffiti movement in the ‘70s to transform the wall into a work of art. “It was a big undertaking,” she says, “but it’s the first outdoor art wall on Long Island.” In addition to being a gallery and art space, Studio 5404 offers art education, lecture series, showcases and roundtables. “Our message is to get art out on Long Island. That’s the direction we want to go towards,” she says. “I want artists who have been trying to show, especially on Long Island,” says Horowitz. “It’s about raising consciousness, not just

selling artwork.” Horowitz says she is drawn to architectural construction versus deconstruction in the environment and the psychological components behind the scenes. Her expertise in scenic art is shown through her sculptures, paintings and photography. “Much of my work is symbolic in nature, with emphasis on materials usage,” she says. The eclectic exhibits change every six weeks and as the word spreads about the alternative space, the turnout has grown. At a recent show, more than 200 people were there to explore the artwork on display. “We had two bands playing and performance artists,” she says proudly. Horowitz believes it is her positive approach to helping artists grow and produce more innovative work that has garnered atten-

tion for the studio and from art appreciators as well. “Collectors and art appreciators have the opportunity to view and purchase fresh, strong artwork that is not traditionally shown on Long Island,” she says. “I had a curator from the MET come down who has been following me [on social media],” Horowitz says. “He critiqued everything and

was so positive and reassuring. I was told that I was on the right path. He said, ‘Don’t stop. Keep going the way you’re going; don’t go traditional.” For Horowitz, that important feedback meant she is getting her message to the right people. “First and foremost, I’m an artist,” she says. “I’m not governed by an arts council and we can do what we want.” Yet she doesn’t take that freedom for granted. “We’re not trying to offend or shock anybody,” she says. With a touch of humility, she adds, “I’m lucky to have this space and I want to help others.”

Jimmy Bissett On the Fly

Guy Who Gets It By Jaime Franchi

46 MILIEU For Professional Long Island Women

One word is tattooed on the inside of Jimmy Bissett’s right ring finger: it reads “love.” He shares the inscription with his two older sisters. It represents the family tie that knots them close together, a bond written in permanent ink. At just 26 years old, Bissett has already learned of the transience of family life after the tragic loss of his father in 2011. Since then, Bissett has taken on a leadership role in the family businesses that includes the Long Island Aquarium and the attached Hyatt Place East End Hotel, the Treasure Cove Resort Marina, and the Bissett Nursery in Holtsville. He grew up handling nearly every aspect of these enterprises, from construction to catering and customer service. His father believed that working from the bottom up was the best way to learn how to eventually run a business. This approach is something Bissett couldn’t agree with more, although being thrust into management came a lot sooner than he had anticipated. This responsibility would be a heavy load for anybody to bear, especially someone in his twenties, but Bissett takes on the challenge with a smile that could light up a room. He practically radiates positivity. “Life is not easy, but it all comes down to how you look at it, and what you make of it,” he told Milieu over steaming cups of coffee in Patchogue near his home. “I have seen a lot in my 26 short years, and it has taught me a lot,” he says. “I have traveled the world, seen and interacted with people that have absolutely everything

milieuli.com

and absolutely nothing. It makes you look at life a whole different way. I take those experiences and apply them to every aspect in my life.” His travels have taken him from Dubai to Cambodia, where he accompanied his sister who was running an education program in psychology. “I’ve been to third world countries where the poverty is unreal,” he says. “It’s sad to see these people who you think have nothing, but they have the biggest smiles on their faces. Little kids who are living in the dumps, but they’re laughing and joking. They’re enjoying life.” The perspective he acquired through his travels is something he carries with him, figuratively in his optimistic attitude and quite literally, in another tattoo inked on his arm. The tattoos that paint his body tell the stories of his life: the collective experiences of his family, his challenges, and his blessings. Jimmy Bissett wears his heart on his sleeve. Inheriting a business that has been in the family for multiple generations is a gift that makes Bissett feel immensely grateful for having received. Yet, he’s also aware that carrying on his father’s and grandfather’s legacies could be a double-edged sword: how can he express his own passions and interests? For Bissett, he found it on the water. Having grown up on the North Shore, the water is both his refuge and his playground, so it makes sense that flyboarding—his favorite sport/activity and new business—is waterbased. Flyboarding is a new extreme watersport that uses a water jetpack attached to a personal water craft like a Jet Ski to propel the flyboarder up into the air. Once the user’s up there, the sky’s the limit. Some people, Bissett included, perform incredible acrobatics: flips and dips, both under the water and then astonishingly out, leaping like a dolphin breaking the surface. Other flyboarders use the height they achieve to enjoy the spectacular views from their vantage point. Bissett discovered the sport while on vacation on Lake Havasu in Arizona and immediately fell in love with it. The entrepreneurial

spirit he inherited from his patriarchs led him to bring flyboarding back to Long Island and to launch a business of his own: teaching others the joy of the sport. In the summer months, you can find him on the Peconic River right behind the Long Island Aquarium, soaring above the water. “This is my own thing,” he says. “I’m kind of finding myself.” The lesson that life is short reached him at an early age in a profound way. For Bissett, instead of being held back by a grief he still carries within him, he transforms that sadness into a sense of gratefulness: for the work he loves and for the life he lives. He pays it forward, contributing to charities he finds important, like the Children of Armenia Fund, and supporting towns on Long Island, like the Ridge Fire Department and the Port Jefferson/Greenport Maritime Festival. “Life is a blessing,” he tells Milieu. “It’s an amazing gift that every one of us have. Life is a sacred journey; a celebration! HUX-Ter In My Humble opinion

Why did we look the other way

By Jaime Franchi Since last October, allegations of sexual assault by Bill Cosby have spread like wildfire as dozens of women have come forward. I’ve noticed a common thread in the media’s hindsighted handling of the revelations: Cosby was intimidating, he was respected, and he was a beloved figure. These characteristics contribute to a terrifying scenario—as they seem to mean that he was held unaccountable, and therefore, untouchable. From his biographer Mark Whitaker to Erin Keane of Salon, the coddling Cosby coverage allowed him to slip through the cracks, despite mounting allegations of the most heinous order. The media had remained so complicit in coddling him that when NPR reporter Scott Simon finally broached the subject in a radio interview, Cosby was shocked into silence. Cosby had long benefited from the unspoken rule that such unspeakable things would remain unasked—especially of a man of his stature in popular culture. But what if there are other conditions that condone compliance with criminal activity— and they have nothing to do with a person’s popularity? In an op-ed in The New York Times in September, titled “Rape and Rotherham,” columnist Ross Douthat wrote about a small industrial town in England where gangs of Pakistani immigrants raped approximately 1,400 girls. According to Douthat, a combination of political and racial correctness had led to the perpetuation of these crimes, and more so, to them being deliberately ignored. “The crimes in Rotherham,” Douthat wrote, “seem scripted to vindicate a reactionary critique of liberal multiculturalism: Here are immigrant gangs exploiting a foolish Western tolerance; here are authorities too committed to ‘diversity’ to react appropriately; here is a liberal society so open-minded that both its brain and conscience have fallen out.” When Douthat wrote his op-ed, he was unknowingly describing the similar circumstances that have allowed Cosby’s alleged predatory behavior to continue over the years. The tide finally began to turn against the celebrity a month later when stand-up comedian Hannibal Burress’s bit about Cosby’s sexual assault history went viral. Suddenly it seemed that women were coming out of the woodwork every week brandishing new accusations of sexual harassment, ranging from forced oral sex to drugged date rape and worse. Cosby has declined to comment on the disturbing allegations—even the few times when

48 MILIEU For Professional Long Island Women

journalists actually dared to ask him about them. His long-standing wife Camille, however, did make a public statement in December asserting her husband’s innocence and asking the public to consider just “who is the victim?” Who indeed? In a society that idolizes celebrity above all, that elevates certain personas as “successful” based on their box-office dollars and their book value, it seems we have unwittingly created a culture of exploitation. By equating mass popularity with power, Hollywood has built a system whereby a sovereign can rule (and overpower) underlings. This dominance is not unique to Hollywood. We’ve seen this in the Roman Catholic Church. We watched it unfold in the football locker room at Penn State. We have been here before. But there is another dimension in this case: Is it possible that in our effort to elevate a successful African-American celebrity to such royalty in an effort to show just how liberal and just

no prisoners, challenging his fellow AfricanAmericans to “do a better job.” For example, in a speech to the NAACP, he launched this invective: “People putting their clothes on backward: Isn’t that a sign of something gone wrong? People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn’t that a sign of something? Or are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up? Isn’t it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up and got all type of needles [piercing] going through her body?” I wonder if it’s possible that Cosby’s offense was also his best defense. Was he pointing fingers away from himself so forcefully so that no one would dare look his way? It certainly seemed to have worked well—until the accusations were too much to ignore. Douthat counsels us to look not at the old framework from which sexual predators have come before, but at the circumstance through which we enable them to be born. Precisely,

Show me what a culture values, prizes, puts on a pedestal, and I’ll tell you who is likely to get away with rape.” how post-racial our society has become, we gave less credence to women’s accusations about his sexual impropriety? Is it then possible that we not only created the culture that allowed him such omnipotence, but celebrated it as a way to revel in our open-mindedness? Though these allegations had been first reported by white women, it’s important to realize that they only caught the nation’s attention at the hands of Hannibal Buress, also a black male comedian. Was this the only scenario that could have brought such a damning indictment on Cosby out in the open? Have we learned that political correctness does little more than to hide an underlying problem and that racism, sexism, and a rampan rape culture is alive and well in President Obama’s America? And is this something Bill Cosby not only recognized, but cultivated as a cloak under which he hid his alleged misdeeds? Cosby has been known in recent years less as the pioneer who brought the Huxtables into our living room in the ’80s, but as a harsh critic of contemporary black youth culture. His rants have taken milieuli.com

those to whom we give a blank check in the form of respect, love, and the power of intimidation. To those we are afraid to challenge publicly. “Show me what a culture values, prizes, puts on a pedestal, and I’ll tell you who is likely to get away with rape,” observes Douthat. Bill Cosby was a man we could feel good about not only because he presented an uplifting vision of a truly progressive America but in part because he made us feel good about ourselves, by showing us how non-racist we were. And yet by not holding his feet to the fire we demonstrated exactly how unequal the system is. In very much the same way we tend to dismiss all criticisms of President Obama as racist. Are most critiques of Obama based on some racial bias? Most likely. But denying that some opposing viewpoints may have actual legitimacy does a disservice to us all. Holding a popular figure above suspicion— failing to challenge anyone who wields power when the powerless raise doubts about them— is the first step to creating a mask behind which evil can fester. Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions.

This year I resolve to... How many of us recite these words as the ball starts to drop? By February do you suddenly feel less than motivated? Don’t despair. Lack of motivation strikes even the most disciplined exercises. Try to remember how good you felt about yourself after completing your workout and be proud that you’ve started a program at all. Then, follow these handy tips to keep yourself going.

Believe it can happen. Make certain you truly believe that you can

achieve the goals you set for yourself. See yourself achieving those goals. You must believe you can do it and are worth it.

Focus on the Process. Concentrate on what you can do on a day by

day basis and understand that it is all about the process rather than the desBonne Marcus tination. Long-term fitness goals are just that; long term. Programs that offer “quick results in just 2 weeks” usually sacrifice quality for empty promises in order to get your money.

Do a little bit rather than nothing. For example, let’s say you planned a 45 minute walk but you just feel too tired. Go ahead and let yourself take a 10 minute walk...you may find that once you get started you may keep on going. Or, if you really are tired, then ten minutes is enough and better than nothing. Try Something New: A new fitness regime will re-awaken any sleeping muscle groups and a new environment can bring about a renewed sense of spirit. Bring the fun back into your workouts by trying a new class. Take it a step further and try something you wouldn’t normally do, like belly dancing or yoga. If you’re not a group fitness fan, hire a personal trainer to revamp your routine.

Retail therapy: My favorite. Get something new during the January sales. A new CD, fitness DVD, book (Perhaps my book? Fit To Be Bride, Sterling Publishers) or new piece of workout gear...something that makes you want to use it for exercise. Personally, as a fitness leader and educator, what keeps me motivated is helping other people. I believe so much in the power of fitness to enhance daily living that I want to share it with other people so they too can enjoy their lives even more. When I see the positive changes in my clients, it makes me feel great and that’s what really keeps me going. Let me know how I can help you. Send your questions to BonneMarcus@gmail.com.

Cherrywood Foot Care A BREAKTHROUGH LASER

ADVERTORIAL

TREATMENT FOR TOENAIL FUNGUS Many people suffer from a condition called Onychomycosis (onni-koh-my-ko-sis), which is better known as toenail fungus. This condition is noticeable by a thickened, yellow or cloudy appearance of an individual’s toenail plate. The toenail can become rough and crumbly or can separate from the nail bed. There is usually no pain or other bodily symptoms unless the disease is severe. The condition can often affect a person’s ability to enjoy the simple things in life such as going barefoot or wearing sandals. Is there hope for sufferers of this condition? Cherrywood Foot Care in Nassau County has just introduced a medical breakthrough by offering the newest in laser technology for toenail fungus: the Cool Breeze Laser. Cherrywood Foot Care, led by founder Dr. Joseph Burke, has been a part of the Long Island community for over 24 years. They offer quality medical and surgical foot care. The facility features cutting-edge emerging technologies such as a diagnostic ultrasound and a state-of-the-art operating room on premise and this new laser treatment for toenail fungus. Dr. Burke and his qualified staff have the most advanced training and use the most advanced techniques in the treatment of this condition and your entire foot and ankle healthcare. Cherrywood Foot Care and Dr. Burke are leading the industry with this revolutionary treatment that quite simply can eliminate toenail fungus. The laser treatment destroys pathogens that cause toenail fungus. This is a serious and powerful medical advancement that the public needs to learn more about. This revolutionary new laser treatment appears more effective than all previous treatment options. Laser therapy for toenail fungus is completely safe, painless and has no side effects. In most cases, usually only one treatment is needed. This treatment leaves patients with a significant improvement in the health and appearance of their toenails. The laser operates in a very tight spectrum of near-infrared light. The laser light passes through the toenail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. The beam created January / february 2015

by this specially designed medical device kills the embedded pathogens in the nail plate and nail bed, leaving normal healthy tissue undamaged. Only minimal adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or side effects have been reported in clinical studies with this new laser technology and treatment. In contrast, topical treatments are minimally effective. “Oral medications available today can cause side effects to the liver, kidney and eyes, and may even affect your senses of taste and smell,” states Dr. Burke. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear, it takes time to grow out. A new healthy nail will be seen emerging from the cuticle area as the nails grow naturally. The average toenail replaces itself every six to nine months. Within one to three months of the procedure, a healthy new growth will be visible. The laser treatment is very effective, according to clinical studies performed in Sacramento, Calif. Most patients experience significant improvement. In most cases, the fungal nails are improved with a single treatment. The vast majority of our clients require only one treatment, which usually takes about 30 minutes. No anesthetic or injections are ever used and you will be able to resume all of your normal activities immediately after the treatment is done. It is recommended that after the treatment (just like you practice good oral hygiene to keep your teeth and gums healthy), you will need to practice good foot hygiene to keep your toenails healthy. Find out how to end your struggle with toenail fungus by visiting Cherrywoodfootcare.com or call Dr. Joseph Burke for a free consultation. Their professional medical staff will help you to feel welcome, relaxed and comfortable with a caring office experience. Cherrywood Foot Care can have you barefoot and smiling with confidence once again with this revolutionary new laser technology. It can eliminate unsightly toenail fungus giving you clear healthy toenails with an affordable one-time treatment! Health 3 Dot Anxiety... The typing awareness indicator or TAI on your smartphone can either cause pure joy or the ultimate letdown. The social and emotional weight of those three gray bubbles has grown into a phenomenon called “3 Dot Anxiety.”

Those little bubbles indicate if someone is typing a message. Will you be the recipient? If not you, then who? The drama associated with the dots could be a relationship dealbreaker. If this sounds familiar, you might consider disabling the feature on your iPhone…

Biosimilar vs Generic Drugs Know the Difference… Ask Questions Biosimilars are less expensive, generic versions of bio-pharmaceutical drugs made by a different manufacturer after the drug patent expires. They are not the same as generic drugs. Many biosimilars will be on the market in 2015. Educate yourself before you are given a biosimilar drug. Milieu found a scenario to help you understand the ramifications of using a biosimilar drug: If a chef is following a recipe and somehow the dish doesn’t taste the same as usual, a slight difference might have occurred, such as the temperature of the oven, the brand of ingredient used, the humidity level and even the elevation of the kitchen could influence the outcome. Manufacturers of a biosimilar drug will have the same results…a similar though different product will be produced each time. Could that result in a drug reaction? Talk to your doctor before accepting a biosimilar prescription.

MRI/PET is a hybrid imaging technology that incorporates MRI soft tissue morphological imaging with PET functional imaging. It heralds an era of the most advanced technology available today. Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is the first private radiology facility in the U.S. to acquire an MRI/PET (Magnetic Resonance Imaging/Positron Emission Tomography) scanner, the only FDA-approved device that has the ability to acquire both an MRI and a PET scan simultaneously— leading to better detection, characterization and treatment of oncologic, neurologic and cardiac diseases. The simultaneous imaging of MRI and PET with the Biograph mMR scanner will: • Eliminate CT radiation exposure that is received from PET/CT scans – which is equivalent to approximately 100 chest X-rays. • Provide superior soft tissue information compared to PET/CT, thus increasing the sensitivity and specificity of the exam. • Increase diagnostic confidence by eliminating motion from two separate scans. • Reduce the number of office visits and acquisition time by combining two important imaging techniques into one system. “These points are of the utmost importance to us here at ZwangerPesiri,” says Chief Executive Officer

Steven L. Mendelsohn, MD. “Not only are we committed to giving our patients access to the most advanced imaging techniques on the market, but we are dedicated to reducing radiation exposure whenever possible. The fact that MRI/PET delivers better diagnostic information than PET/CT and reduces radiation exposure equivalent to 100 chest X-rays is what makes this modality an integral part of who we are and what we stand for.” “We know that by having an MRI/ PET unit at Zwanger-Pesiri, patients and physicians around the country, and even the world, will now have access to this valuable imaging modality in a more private, comfortable and family-like environment. And being that the MRI/PET scanner will be located in our Lynbrook location, which is only 15 minutes away from John F. Kennedy International Airport, it will be accessible to many,” says Robert Day, chief operating officer of Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology. Visit the Zwanger-Pesiri website for further information at www.zprad.com. What’s in the Cards January / February BY PSYCHICDEB

Aquarius January 20 to February 18

Pathway to Positivity

the Magician – this is a time of new beginnings. You are about to demonstrate your creative gifts and abilities and develop any untapped potential of which you may not be aware. Opportunities that required a focused mind and intuitive insight are likely to present themselves giving you a chance to develop your skills.

Pisces February 19 to March 20

the Hermit – this card represents wisdom and patience that you will learn through the passage of time. You will be able to stand alone without feeling lonely. The time is ripe for you to embark on a period of soul-searching using yoga or meditation techniques.

The Positive Benefits of Love

Aries March 21 to April 19

the Ace of Swords reversed – you may feel threatened, pressured or victimized and beset with some insurmountable problems, some of which you may have caused yourself. Resolve to stay clear of gossip so in the future these threats will cease.

Learning and understanding the dynamics of how our senses and emotions are our connection to Love is especially timely on St. Valentine’s Day. On this day we show our emotions of Love through our senses, especially speaking and embracing. Some say that you cannot hear, taste or see Love, but you can feel it through a compassionate embrace, a small kiss or just feeling the energy of Love.

Taurus April 20 to May 20

the King of Swords – you are about to meet someone who is powerful, ethical and analytical and may open up a new perspective on life or give you a helping hand. This could lead to a professional advancement in the form of a promotion.

Gemini May 21 to June 20

All of our senses and emotions are connected to Love. Most believe there are only five senses and emotions but studies prove there are more than 21, and we experience them without even knowing it. To become more aware of them, allow the good senses to stay and let the negative ones go. Life is about creating the balance between Love and the senses and emotions connected to it, ultimately giving us the feeling of Love that we all seek. Without the other emotions, the pure Light and essence of Love could not be totally felt or appreciated.

the 9 of Cups – you are ready to enjoy happiness and prosperity in abundance. A marriage is possible or you may be starting a sensuous love affair. You may also be about to secure a business deal or finalize a project of great value to you. Your wish will come true.

Cancer June 21 to July 22

the 7 of Wands – you are challenged to defend your beliefs. You may have to prove you are more than capable of handling your life. The path you have chosen has led you to this point and you need to deal with the consequences of your choices.

Leo July 23 to August 22

As we learn to respect this heightened attainable vibe, we bring Love closer to ourselves. Winter is the perfect time to learn more about it while we are hibernating by recognizing just how to bring it to us every day. You can choose to change your thought process and activate LOVE in a way that is unique and true to you. I like to call it: “Divine Design.”

the World reversed – there is a partial victory. You may feel an inability to accept yourself or the responsibilities of life. Take the first step in self-improvement.

Virgo August 23 to September 22

the Chariot reversed – be careful not to lose sight of your goals or you’ll fall off track and revert to negative emotional habits. More discipline is in order at this time to prevent self-destructive behavior.

Bobbi Allison | Spirit Medium BobbiAllison/Facebook | www.BobbiAllison.com

Libra September 23 to October 22

the 4 of Pentacles – this card warns about the dangers of being too possessive of your finances and emotions. Share what you have or you may become stifled by a lackluster approach to life. Your longterm financial outlook is good provided you become more flexible.

Love Flow

A love poem from Marian Allison-Roslund Love flow through us as you naturally do, let us be still and receive you, while we welcome you through.

Scorpio October 23 to November 21

the Page of Cups – this is the time to get in touch with your feelings. If you’re starting a new romance, tender care is needed to bring it to fruition because everything is still fragile at this early stage.

Envelop us in your warm and nurturing embrace. Stay with us just long enough to give us a taste. Feed our minds with new perspectives, heal our bodies with good health, touch our hearts with your gentle kindness, leaving them forever impressed.

Sagittarius November 22 to December 21

the King of Cups reversed – you may be involved with an emotionally immature man. He has never come to terms with his feelings and appears defensive and sarcastic. Be careful of being deceived by such a man.

Bless us with your intentions so that we can express them through ourselves.

Capricorn December 22 to January 19

Sprinkle your seeds inside our souls so that we may share our wealth,

the 2 of Swords reversed – you now have to finalize a decision and take action concerning a choice between two ideas. You’ve been on the fence too long. Choose one.

Let us offer hungry hearts and souls enough to feed themselves, with the food that you have left, Love flow through us as freely as you please, touching us magically and deeply for all eternity.
