Session 1 (13:00 - 18:00) Dance - Mountbatten Auditorium Karan Pangali Kathak

Karan performs an explosive set of pieces inspired by the traditional Kathak repertoire and choreographed by none other than Padmabushan Kumudini Lakhia.

Sauraya Amin Kathak

Suriya Amin is an emerging British Kathak dancer whose love of dance is evident in her passionate performances. Here she performs a selection of classical pieces.

Devika Rao Yakshagana

The unique and vibrant South Indian theatrical dance form of Yakshagana is rarely performed in the UK. Devika Rao is one of the few promoting this engaging and fascinating style.

Apoorva Jayaraman Bharatanatyam

Apoorva Jayaraman is a rising star among the next generation of dancers in India. Trained under Priyadarsini Govind, Apoorva’s fresh, engaging approach ensures this ancient art form remains current and exciting to contemporary audiences.

Italian dancer Elena Catalano presents a beautiful selection of pieces showcasing the rich traditions of Odissi, one of India’s finest and most exquisite art forms.

The rich and soothing tone of Mowna Ramachandra’s voice is complemented by Pandit Rajkumar Misra’s tabla accompaniment in this classical Hindustani concert.

Workshops - Kathak Hall Devika Rao Yakshagana and Bharatanatyam

Devika Rao demonstrates two very different dance forms from South India. The classical Bharatanatyam form is danced and recognised all over the world, here it is contrasted with the unique theatrical dance style of Yakshagana. Join us for an insight into these two beautiful dance forms.

Bangalore Prathap Konokul / Percussion

In Konokul, or South Indian vocal percussion, the artist improvises within a structure that interrelates with the chosen raga and talam. Bangalore Prathap enthralls in this demonstration of the capacity of the human voice.

Madhu Tanjorkar Violin

Thought to have been introduced to Indian music in the 1900s, the violin has become a popular instrument in Carnatic music and in recent years has also been introduced to the Hindustani repertoire. Madhu Tanjorkar demonstrates the versatility and expressive nature of the violin in Indian music.

Sonia Sabri is one of the UK’s leading Kathak dancers. Artistic Director of Sonia Sabri Company, her choreographies are fresh, exciting and modern.

Elena Catalano Odissi

Odissi originates from the east Indian state of Orissa, and is believed to be one of the oldest surviving dance forms of India. It is unique for its focus on the independent movement of the head, chest and pelvis. In this workshop Elena highlights the key characteristics and movements of Odissi.

Rakesh Chaurasia Bansuri Kousic Sen Tabla

The bamboo flute, or bansuri as its known in India, has a haunting beauty that captures the imagination. Rakesh Chaurasia, nephew and student of legendary musician Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, is an exceptional talent whose ability to communicate immense emotion and feeling is coupled with great technical skill. A child prodigy in his youth, he is now regarded as a leading figure in the Indian classical music genre. Rakesh will be accompanied by highly acclaimed tabla maestro, Kousic Sen.

Mahotsav celebrates the very best of Indian art with an uplifting and fun-filled day of workshops, performances and food! The very best musicians and dancers from across Britain fill the stages at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for a day of performances and interaction for everyone to enjoy. Featuring classical and folk dance, and a rich variety of musical performances, Mahotsav draws on the amazing emerging talents of Indian Music in Britain, and ends with a finale by maestro flautist Rakesh Chaurasia.
