In this unique performance, three extraordinary musicians come together to celebrate the beauty of Indian Classical music and its long association with Jazz. Manish Pingle is one of the world’s leading Mohan Veena (Indian Slide Guitar) players. The world class musician is a disciple of Ustad Shahid Parvez, the renowned sitar maestro. Joining him on stage is Gurdain Rayatt, a disciple of Pandit Shankar Ghosh and is one of the UK’s leading tabla players, having accompanied many of India’s most prestigious artists. Completing the line-up is electric guitarist, Jack Jennings. Jack studied the sitar with Donough Sanfay, a disciple of Amarnath Mishra, and is known for his pioneering approach to the adaptation of Indian classical music for the electric guitar. The Trio will take the audiences on a dynamic and exciting journey through the world of Indian Classical music. Whilst the music they play is in keeping with tradition, the innovative inclusion of the electric guitar embraces new timbres and melodic nuances without compromising the original spirit and intensity of the music. This is a rare combination of instruments and musicians from different backgrounds, celebrating the music that brought them together. Half of Me – Swati Dance Company

Saturday 13 April / 7:30pm The Capstone Theatre, Liverpool £8

Half of Me is an emotive work that brings together cross genre of dance and theatre performed by highly charismatic Bharatanatyam dancers with modern choreography, using poignant story-line and spellbinding music by Praveen D. Rao, a versatile music composer from India who creates new genre of music connecting classical music with modern sensibilities. Inspired by Satinder Kaur Chohan’s play by the same title, Half of Me is based on a modern day theme which shares often unheard stories of young people born through Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and draws parallel to a similar storyline based on motherhood from famous Indian epic ‘Mahabharata’. The artistic idea of this work is grounded in the technique of Bharatanatyam, a classical South Asian dance form but has contemporary relevance in connecting with diverse audience. This work has wider appeal and especially easy to reach young dance audience, as well as families. Swati Dance Company - bharatanatyam dance
