Without missing a beat, he asked her, “Does that mean I have a 100 percent chance of surviving one year?� He laughed at his own wit when he reported this to me over the phone a few weeks ago, right before launching into some current

Stephens, whose cancer is attributed to the asbestos-wrapped water pipes he ďŹ xed while working as a plumber for Napa State Hospital, is a unique specimen of social gady. His letters appear frequently in the Napa Valley Register, and his presence at board of supervisor and city council meetings has come to be expected after years of tireless activism in Napa County.
