KINCH’S MANRESA RETURNS TO LIFE WITH A ‘RITUAL’ FOODIE APPROACH

Uruguayan brothers on their journey from YCombinator to Los Gatos biz launch

Laura Ness, Contributor

When superstar chef David Kinch decided to shutter Manresa at the end of 2022, it seemed an era of Los Gatos culinary fame had come to a close. Through several seasons the building sat, with its “For Lease” sign, looking like a child that had lost a best friend. Real estate agents were at first forthcoming and then, not so much, as the rumors began to fly.

Then, word slowly got out that the name “Manresa” was going to live on in culinary parlance, at least for a while, and that Kinch was not really out of the picture: the place would become the setting for a series of pop-ups called Ritual at Manresa. It would feature the cuisine from guest chefs from around the world, many of whom happened to be colleagues of Kinch.

But who’s behind it?, we wondered. Turns out, two Uruguayan entrepreneurs had fixed on a concept that would combine the world of fine dining with a technology business they’d hatched back in 2016.

senior’s intangibles a key to success

Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor

Matt Ford-Wellman knows he’s not one of the household names on the talent-laden Los Gatos High School baseball team.

However, the senior pitcher finds other ways to contribute, a fact not lost on Wildcats coach Mike Minkel.

“The ultimate team-first teammate,” Minkel said in a text message to the Los Gatan. “Uber talented, lots of volunteer efforts.”

Los Gatos entered this week’s play 14-3 overall and 6-2 in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division. Outside of the West Catholic

EX-HGTV STAR FROM LOS GATOS SENTENCED TO 4 YEARS IN JAIL

A former HGTV star was sentenced Tuesday to four years in jail and ordered to pay back close to $10 million for committing real estate and financial fraud against 11 victims.

Los Gatos resident Charles “Todd” Hill, the 58-year-old star of “Flip It to Win It” was remanded to jail, during the hearing in Santa Clara County Superior Court. The show’s concept was that he bought dilapidated homes, fixed them up, and then sold them for a profit. Instead, Hill spent millions on overbudget remodels, laundered profits, and pocketed millions in fraudulently obtained money.

Hill was convicted last year of multiple fraud schemes, including scams perpetrated well before the show, such as a Ponzi scheme. Evidence showed that Hill spent the laundered money on a rented apartment in San Francisco, as well as hotels, vacations, and luxury cars.

DJ YUKA YU HOSTING WORKSHOP AT LOS GATOS LIBRARY

Attendees can learn fundamentals of live music mixing

Growing up in Taipei, Taiwan, Ssu Ting “Yuka” Yu’s dream was to become a choir conductor.

“My mom was a singer when she was young,” she said, crediting her dad for inspiring her to pursue what had clearly become a personal passion. “I always loved singing.”

But as she grew older, Yu ended up going in a different direction, gravitating towards the biotechnology industry.

But, after throwing herself into that field, she began to feel the pull of the arts, once again.

“After I burned out from my biotech job, I was in London and attending a music school,” she said, explaining how she came to explore a role in the nightlife world.

“Okay, it can be a fun hobby,” she thought to herself as she moved to the Bay Area in 2018 and began taking gigs where she was behind the turntables.

It went better than she expected and, soon enough, she was playing at some of the region’s biggest underground venues, from the Midway, to Monarch, to 1015 Folsom.

One of the most interesting shows she’s played was in Honolulu, Hawaii, at a private party with a renegade vibe.

“They have a very intimate dancefloor,” she said, recalling the lively event.

“I still remember how excited I was.”

While Yu draws on a variety of electronic music styles, she also incorporates traditional Chinese instruments into her performances, such as the guzheng.

Yu now lives in Marin County, but she has family in Saratoga, so she frequently hangs out in the South Bay.

On Thursday she’ll be teaching a class at the Los Gatos Library about the fundamentals of DJing.

“In my opinion, I feel like everyone can learn to DJ,” she said. “It’s not really so difficult. But, if you want to be a really great DJ, you have to put in a lot of time and dedication.”

She’ll go over the process involved in creating a captivating live set, the “Rekordbox” software used to organize and perform music, and give attendees the chance to put their hands on the controls for themselves.

The session is geared towards beginners and those with more experience with live sound.

“It’s pretty much open for everybody,” she said, adding that DJing is a little bit like journalism. “You have to do your homework, do your research, and put all the good music together.”

DJing Workshop with DJ Yuka Yu from 4:30-6:00pm on Thursday, April 18, at the Los Gatos Library at 100 Villa Ave. Registration Required: https:// losgatosca.libcal.com/event/11949018

“Some see the huge amount of money in Silicon Valley real estate as a business opportunity,” Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. “Others, unfortunately, see it as a criminal opportunity – and we will hold those people strictly accountable.”

Hill was indicted in November 2019, after an investigation showed he'd committed multiple frauds. On Sept. 27, 2023, he was convicted by plea of grand theft against all victims and admitted the aggravated white-collar enhancements. He was ordered to pay $9,402,678.43 in restitution and spend 10 years on probation.

In one case, he diverted construction money for his personal use.

In another instance, he created a Ponzi scheme by taking an investor’s money budgeted to buy homes and, instead, used it to live lavishly. To hide the theft, he created false balance sheets and got loans using fraudulent information.

In another case, an investor toured a home for which he had provided $250,000 for remodeling and found it to be a burnt down shell with no work done on it.

Victims who spoke at Tuesday’s hearing shared how they were still suffering financial and professional damages from Hill’s crimes, a spokesperson for the DA's Office said.

A GREAT RACE FOR A GREAT CAUSE

Vasona Park was teaming with runners on Sunday

Dinah Cotton, Contributor

The 46th Annual Los Gatos Rotary Great Race was held Sunday at Vasona Park, with the start and finish line both located at the Gateway Pavillion.

This year's chairman was Paul Christensen’s third year as chair of the event.

“Actually, I took over for Mike Norcia, who was the chairman for the previous 10 years or so,” he said, just prior to the starting gun going off. “This year we have 454 entrants pre-registered, and hope to get 50 or so more on race day.”

Former Los Gatos High School track and field coach Willie Harmatz started the Great Race in the 70s, and it’s been held almost every year since—it was paused during the Covid-19 pandemic.

On the field during this year’s fes-

tivities, Harmatz recalled the 1976 birth of the race.

"We used to call this the Dammit Run and have a competition to see who would sign up the most runners,” Harmatz said. “We also called this the Criss Cross Race. After years of holding the race on Highway 9, we lost our police backing and the number of entrants has declined since then."

The USA Track & Field-sanctioned four-mile race involves pretty complicated logistics.

This past Sunday, USATF officials were on duty to record racers’ times. Each runner was issued a bib with a chip that would keep exact time.

Qualified participants ran for points towards an overall tally.

Some may even eventually qualify for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Entry fees ranged from $10 for children 12 and under all the way up to $50 for late registration.

All proceeds go to support Rotary's charitable endeavors.

There was also a bit of a rivalry between Saratoga and Los Gatos, two close—yet very different—communities.

For a few years it was also a turnaround race as well (back to Saratoga)—for a total of eight miles.

The 2024 event has attracted plenty of support from the business community, with El Camino Health as the “presenting sponsor,” and Darling Fischer and the Los Gatan coming in as Silver Sponsors.

Wood chips had been put down, and there was a waffle truck.

Participants included children in strollers, folks with dogs and people who chose to walk.

And thankfully, Mother Nature cooperated by providing a break from the rain.

A FANTASTIC SHOWING IN SENIOR YEAR

Matt, from page 1

Athletic League, the SCVAL De Anza is arguably the toughest baseball league in the Central Coast Section.

Ford-Wellman, who closed out games against Mountain View and Gunn recently, has pitched sparingly this season due to the number of quality arms in front of him.

“We’ve got some of the best pitchers in the CCS, so it’s been an uphill battle coming out of the pen and competing against some of our own guys (for innings),” Ford-Wellman said. “They’re so dominant in their own right. … It’s always fun coming out of the bullpen. Our starters set us up really nice and our offense gives us tons of run support, so there’s room for error. I’d almost compare it to that I'm the third-string QB you get set up perfectly so you’re basically taking knees at that point (closing out a game with a big lead). There’s not a lot of stress and I enjoy it.”

In a 10-4 win over Mountain View on March 27, Lucas Carlisle hit a grand slam and finished with five RBIs. Two days later, Los Gatos completed the two-game sweep of Mountain View with a 9-1 victory. AJ Minyard threw a no-hitter with nine strikeouts, AJ Ljepava went 4-for-4 and Donovan Freed hit a home run.

Any team that aspires to win a championship needs talent and intangibles, and it’s the latter where Ford-Wellman makes his presence known. As one of the more vocal players in the dugout, Ford-Wellman keeps things loose and fun.

“I love cheering on my guys,” he said. “I love rooting for them in tough spots. We’ve got a lot of good guys on our squad, so it makes it easy to cheer them on and get behind them. I think it does mean something to have a dugout presence. I think it enhances a team further (toward achieving their goals).

“I love talking about all things baseball and being vocal in practice about what we’re doing and the jobs we need to be doing. When you step on the field, there has to be some sense of urgency and it starts with specific players. Santino Nanez is one of those guys always communicating and keeping us together.”

In the last week of March, the team started playing Two Ball during games, a warm-up drill that keeps players active while waiting in between innings. The top collegiate baseball squads incorporate Two Ball into their daily game program.

“It’s a way to keep the dugout involved,” Ford-Wellman said. “There’s a lot of good energy, it keeps everyone loose, it keeps us alive, keeps the long innings from getting long, and keeps the game moving quick.”

Los Gatos High has produced some incredible players over the years, the most recent being 2020 graduate Tommy Troy, who was selected No. 12 by the Arizona Diamondbacks in last year’s Major League Baseball Draft.

Ford-Wellman said Troy who went on to star at Stanford was the player he most admired growing up.

“I remember watching him play I remember watching him play in the CCS (2018 Open Division) championship game against Valley Christian,” he said. “," he said. "We ended up losing—but you could tell he was on a different level above everybody. And at college he was two steps above everybody.”

Ford-Wellman also looked up to 2021 LGHS graduates Tommy Splaine and Logan Johnstone, who were seniors when Ford-Wellman was a freshman. Splaine plays at the University of Arizona and Johnstone at Washington State, but they take time to visit LGHS when the opportunity arises, Ford-Wellman said.

For most high school student-athletes, their senior year of playing sports is their last from a competitive standpoint. The same holds true for Ford-Wellman, who couldn’t have asked for anything more in his final season of playing competitive baseball.

“It’s been a really awesome last season and I wouldn’t want to do it with any other group of guys,” he said. “I hope it doesn’t end for a long while. We’d like to make a deep run in the playoffs and come out with our desired expectations. Even though it’ll be the end for me, I’ll keep up with my teammates as many of them go on to play at the next level.”

But it was thanks to their sister’s career as an international chef that they came to blend their talents with her connections. Collaborating closely with some of Latin America's most celebrated restaurants and chefs, they created the Meitre platform to help restaurants provide customized marketing to maximize reservations.

Meitre, which initially launched in Argentina, Brazil, and Peru, does not replace reservation systems, but instead works with them. Meitre claims to increase restaurant profits as much as 30 percent, by optimizing table allocation, prioritizing high margin bookings at peak hours and eliminating no-shows.

“The first to recognize the value of our software was the legendary Argentine Chef Francis Mallmann, with whom we formed a wonderful friendship,” the brothers told us. “Interesting-

ly, chef Mallmann was also the inaugural chef to join Ritual in 2021, when we commenced our series of intimate dinners with world-renowned chefs in undisclosed locations around the Bay Area.” Among the early adopters of Meitre were establishments such as Central (from chef Virgilio Martínez), Maido (Mitsuharu Tsumura), DOM (Alex Atala), Pujol (Enrique Olvera), and Quintonil (Jorge Vallejo).

The brothers came to Silicon Valley in 2018 to participate in YCombinator, the incubator behind Dropbox, Airbnb, Stripe and other Silicon Valley unicorns. They scored when Andreessen Horowitz invested $1.6 million in Meitre. One of the fund’s investor/ advisors is the former CEO of OpenTable. They currently have about 100 restaurant clients.

During the pandemic, though, the brothers were forced to hit pause.

“Our go-to-market strategy encountered a setback with the global pandemic, which unexpectedly became

location, they approached Kinch, who was contemplating how the Manresa brand could continue beyond his tenure.

Kinch told the Los Gatan he’s happy to partner with the Caviglias. He’ll be a “culinary ambassador,” meaning he’ll be sharing his wealth of knowledge—and contacts—with the brothers. Clearly, he’s having fun and enjoying the opportunity to maintain connections with his colleagues in the food world.

“It’s a fabulous concept,” said Kinch. “Los Gatos is really embracing it. Juan and Luis are really smart, and they know what they are doing. They had a pop-up business on the Peninsula that really caught on and were looking for the right venue to make it more permanent. People are absolutely loving it. The first tranche of dinners sold out almost instantly, and that was with no proof of concept.”

Kinch has no plans to don an apron himself, however. But he certainly wants the brothers to succeed. After all, he notes, “I’m also the landlord.”

We wondered who provides service for these pop-up dinners, and the Caviglias explained that each restaurant flies in their kitchen staff, who seamlessly integrate with the in-house team to orchestrate the culinary magic one expects at a place like Manresa.

the catalyst for creating Ritual,” they said. “In the first three months of 2020, we began assessing the various scenarios resulting from the global response to Covid-19.

“While some chefs contemplated closure, others sought to devise takeout processes, and a few adventurous souls even considered delivery services. We spent months navigating the opportunities presented by the new reality, and, after nearly a year of planning amidst uncertainty, we launched Ritual in May 2021 with our inaugural series of secret dinners.”

These clandestine dinners were held in different locations on the Peninsula, including private homes, art galleries, churches—even open fields. Each Ritual pop-up segment consisted of six dinners monthly, with two large communal tables where guests could connect with like-minded diners, giving them a chance to enjoy an unparalleled culinary experience when the world seemed unable to offer anything else.

When the brothers, who had dined at Manresa in the past, realized the restaurant space was available, they couldn’t help but think it might be a good fit. Shortly after they began working on transitioning their pop-up concept to the

Chefs typically bring a few members of their front-of-house team, such as a maître d', sommelier, or general manager. The nature of each residency varies, as some restaurants shut down their entire operation at their home base to participate in Ritual, while others send a team to Los Gatos, while keeping their home base open. And yes, Juan and Luis attend each of the dinners.

Some chefs import special ingredients for their dishes. Some rely on local ingredients, Dinners generally include 9-12 mini courses. Vegetarian options are available, but must be requested 72 hours in advance.

Tickets start at $450 per person, with optional wine and nonalcoholic pairings available. By the way, the corkage fee is $150 for a 750ml bottle. There are 48 seats available each evening, with priority given to those with a Ritual at Manresa membership. Subscribers can book scheduled dinners throughout 2024, access last-minute seats, and participate in chef meet-and-greets. There’s also a private room for members. The monthly membership fee is $190.

Members get access to tickets 60 days in advance of a residency.

PAULISTAN PROVENANCE

ments or your last four pay stubs to prove income), then changing its mind again and delaying the visa requirement until April 2025.

David Kinch’s Manresa also appeared on the same list, and the two chefs are collaborating this month as part of Manresa’s reinvention on Village Lane.

Like Kinch, Atala celebrates local ingredients. He’s been a champion of sourcing Brazil’s biodiverse bounty to go beyond the conventional and produce a culinary experience that’s far from ordinary. Like any breakthrough chef, he curates an experience that transports, educates and leaves an indelible memory. It will be interesting to see his interpretation of Santa Cruz Mountains and coastal terroir.

Atala’s residency, which lasts until the end of this month, gives locals the chance to sample his innovative Brazilian artistry without the annoyance of having to figure out whether an American needs a visa to fly to São Paulo.

The leftie government this month flip-flopped between no visa requirements, then requiring one (along with three months of bank account state-

Thankfully, for Los Gatans who don’t want to submit financial documents to the Brazilian consulate, Atala is in town this week for the Ritual at Manresa series.

The roster of celebrity chefs headed to the town of the cats from Paris, Tokyo and elsewhere will follow this schedule:

• May: The Clove Club, Chef Isaac McHale (London, 2 Michelin Stars)

• June: Odette, Chef Julien Royer (Singapore, 3 Michelin Stars)

• July: Ikoyi, Chef Jeremy Chan (London, 2 Michelin Stars)

• August: The Jane Antwerp, Chef Nick Bril (Antwerp, 2 Michelin Stars)

• September: Lasarte, Chef Paolo Casagrande (Japan, 3 Michelin Stars)

• November: Chef Paul Liebrandt (New York, Chef of Previous Michelin Starred Restaurants)

• December: Château de la Chèvre D’Or, Chef Arnaud Faye (Paris, 2 Michelin Stars)

A few coveted reservations still remain and can be reserved online. More information on the series can be found on the Ritual at Manresa website.

HISTORY

THE LOS GATOS HOTEL AND SODA WORKS STORY

Factory bottled beverages consumed by thirsty baseball spectators

Alan Feinberg, Contributor

It seems that hardly a month goes by without the launch of a new restaurant in our historic downtown. The latest addition to the dining scene is Dar Restaurant and Bar, located in the little house that formerly housed 11 College Avenue and Nick’s Next Door. It’s owned and operated by the Shaquir brothers who brought their love of Mediterranean cuisine to Los Gatos.

The property was once the site of another family enterprise in the hospitality industry. For most of the 20th century, the land on the corner of W. Main St. and College Ave. was owned by the Mariotti and Puccinelli families.

Luigi “Louie” Mariotti was an Italian immigrant who arrived in California at age 25 with only $10.40 in his pocket. He first found employment as a ranch hand in Napa, earning $18 per month. But unlike many Italians who

to settle here in 1907 and build the Los Gatos Hotel on this corner.

Arranged marriages were customary in the Italian community during that era. After his bride, Elena Barbini, arrived from Italy in about 1910, Louie built a small family home and garden behind the hotel. To enhance the property, he commissioned an expert Italian stonemason to construct an ornate brick and stone wall along College Ave.

The property also included a carriage house and barn that Louie and Elena later converted into the Los Gatos Soda Works bottling plant. Their soda was popular at local baseball games, and the plant was reportedly used to illegally bottle wine during Prohibition. One of the few surviving Soda Works glass bottles is now in the permanent collection of the New Museum of Los Gatos (NUMU).

In 1912, Mariotti was fined $300 (about $7,500 today) when he was found guilty of selling liquor at his hotel. That episode was part of a long battle over prohibition in Los Gatos, dating back to the 1880s. The town was about equally divided between the “wets” and the “drys,” and the issue would not die for decades.

Louie and Elena had six children. In 1932, their daughter Julia married Reginald “Reggie” Puccinelli who became an active participant in the Mariotti family businesses. During the 1950s and early 1960s, Puccinelli operated Reggie’s Inn, in the southwest corner of the hotel. Reggie’s was a popular place to have a drink, especially for the men in town. Puccinelli’s décor featured his collection of antique rifles, swords, and bows and arrows, all tacked up on the walls. Mariotti’s Los Gatos Hotel burned down in 1968, and the site sat vacant until after the death of Julia Mariotti Puccinelli in 1995.

The original Mariotti home and Soda Works met the bulldozer in 1997, although portions were saved and incorporated into replicas on the same site. The impressive brick and masonry wall still stands, looking very much the same as it did over 100 years ago.

Recently, the Puccinelli family dedicated a park bench on the sidewalk in front of the long lost Reggie’s Inn. For more information visit www. lostgatos.com.

settled in wine country, Luigi spent time exploring other parts of our state. He made some money with a fruit business in San Francisco, worked for a short time in a soda works bottling plant in Los Angeles and returned to San Francisco where he was employed in various grocery, liquor and cigar businesses. After he learned that several hundred of his former countrymen had formed an “Italian Colony” near downtown Los Gatos, he decided

LIGHTS, CAMERA, COMMUNITY

A cinematic opportunity to support vibrancy in Los Gatos

Jeffrey P. Blum, Contributor

Attention, movie buffs, social butterflies and champions of connection! Clear your calendars for May 6, beginning at 10 am, because the Los Gatos Foundation for Older Adults to Thrive is throwing a blockbuster event at the historic Cinelux Los Gatos Theatre.

The Los Gatos Foundation for Older Adults to Thrive (website: LosGatosThrives.org) is a non-profit corporation following investigative work determining gaps existed in the delivery of core services. The findings, outlined in detail in work by the Community Health and Senior Services Commission, the results from a community-wide survey, and a Road Map adopted by our town council.

Another goal arising from the Road Map was to enhance community engagement. So, without further ado, we present you with the skinny on our smash hit event. Yes, everyone should mark a spot for fun, film, and engagement – all under one roof (a very cool, art deco roof, we might add). This isn't your average showing, folks. This is about coffee, pastry, supreme movie viewing, community, and making Los Gatos an even more vibrant place to live.

But first, a word from our sponsors...

Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Co., led by the ever-enthusiastic Terri Hope, will be brewing up smiles with coffee and pastries. Because let's face it, a good movie deserves a good cup of joe (and a flaky croissant or some other such delectable pastry, for that matter). A huge shout out to Paul Gunsky, owner of the Cinelux Theatre and manager of the Los Gatos Theatre, for opening the theater’s doors for this special occasion.

Alright, alright, enough with the thank you speeches, tell me about the movie!

Patience, my friend! We're getting there. For just $10, you get the royal treatment: admission to a firstrun movie (think hot-off-the-presses Hollywood!), a steaming cup of Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Co.'s finest, and a heavenly pastry. But here's the kicker: that $10 goes a long way. It covers promotional costs and paves the way for future Los Gatos Foundation for Older Adults to Thrive programs. For a ten spot, you get a morning out that would make Gatsby himself jealous. Indeed, you unleash your inner cinephile without breaking the bank.

Every first Monday of the month (except holidays, because even movie stars need a break), the Los Gatos Theatre will transform into a haven for film lovers.

This isn't just for our amazing older adults (although, let's be honest, they deserve an action filled activity with laughter and good company). This event is for everyone in Los Gatos! It's a chance to get the entire community together, have a fun time, see a great movie, and maybe even make some new friends. The Foundation has personally invited senior living center staff and residents, service providers and the people they serve, community leaders, students (assuming, ahem, they don’t cut class), and others, to join the fun, fostering social interaction and inclusion.

Fall Guy Gosling takes center stage...

This MMMM premiers with a flick that's sure to be a hit: "Fall Guy" starring Ryan Gosling. We won't spoil the plot, but let's just say it involves Gosling, some high-octane action, and enough laughs to keep you buzzing all week. Amazingly, we’re getting to see this movie just a few days after its premier engagement (on May 3).

So, how do I snag these magical movie tickets?

Tickets can be purchased at the door the day of the event or ahead of time, or online at Losgatostheatre.com. Space is limited, so don't wait until the credits roll to secure your spot.

The bottom line?

Mark your calendars for May 6 at 10 am. Head down to the Los Gatos Theatre, grab a coffee and a pastry, settle into a plush seat, and get ready for cinematic fun for a cause. You'll be supporting the Los Gatos Foundation for Older Adults to Thrive, which is on a mission to create a community center; a place where everyone—from toddlers in tutus to octogenarians with opera glasses—can come together, connect, and, well, thrive!
