On this auspicious occasion, the entire ENJOY Team is happy to wish the most respected Paramount Chief of the Akuapem Traditional Area a blissful anniversary! We also convey our warmest congratulations to the people of Okuapeman on the successful commemoration in unity of the Odwira Festival 2014. Like His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama rightly pointed it out during the celebration at Akropong-Akuapem on 10th October, it feels real good when peace is allowed to take precedence in our dealings with one another. May love, maturity and understanding amongst other virtues continue to guide Akuapems both at home and in the Diaspora! Christa Sanders, Director of the Webster University Ghana Campus, is our Star of the Month. She is in love with this country of ours. She has travelled extensively around the world but her decision to move to Ghana from her native United States of America has been the most exciting one she has made. Read about her and the Webster University Ghana Campus. Finally, in this issue, I salute Victoria Michaels and her associates for their laudable initiative of taking concrete steps to raise awareness about the Ebola virus disease through the One Ghana United Against Ebola Project. I commend as well all the individuals and corporate bodies assisting in the process. I join them to entreat each and everyone of us to adopt the formula “Spread the word and not the disease” and to resolve accordingly to not serve as a conduit neither for cholera nor for Ebola! itizens of the Akuapem State of the Eastern Region of Ghana are certainly not going to forget soon the Odwira Festival 2014. To climax the traditional and cultural occurrence this year, which was coupled with festivities marking the 40th Anniversary of the enstoolment of the Okuapehene, Oseadeeyo Nana Addo Dankwa III, a colossal Durbar of Chiefs and citizens of Akuapem was held at the Presby Training College Park, Akropong-Akuapem on Friday, 10th October.

Beyond the park, festivities were organized all over the town of Akropong-Akuapem, testifying both to the commitment of the Akuapems to the tenets of their tradition and culture and to their affection for Oseadeeyo Nana Addo Dankwa III. The fervour of the community was indeed heart-warming. On their way to occupying their designated seats on the durbar ground, a vast majority of the Chiefs and Queen-mothers moved in palanquins carried shoulder-high by enthusiastic able-bodied men and accompanied by excited crowds of devoted. e

IMPOSSIBLE NOT AKUAPEM nstooled on 24th September 1974 as Okuapehene and formally installed at Mpeniase, Akropong, in the Eastern Region, on 10th October 1974, Mr Stephen Afari Djan, then 44, was given the stool name Nana Addo Dankwa III. The new Okuapehene soon after proposed to hold the Ayikese (Royal Funeral) of three Paramount Chiefs who had died while occupying the stool. Considering the financial constraints and obvious logistical obstacles at the time, it was rather

daunting task. So, for the whole Akuapeman, somebody was biting more than they could chew. But the Okuapehene stood firm... and accomplished his vision of holding the much necessary Ayikese. It was a unanimously recognized achievement! In recognition of that considerable feat, the Chiefs and citizens of the Akuapem State decided to give Nana Addo Dankwa III the title ‘Oseadeeyo’, i.e. “He-whose-word-is-as-good-ashis-bond”. e

THE SOUL OF THE OKUAPEHENE hile in Akropong-Akuapem on Friday, 10th October 2014 to cover the grand durbar which climaxed the 40th Anniversary Celebrations of Oseadeeyo Nana Addo Dankwa III and the Odwira Festival 2014, I relished the opportunity to be in the midst of truly cultural and traditional proceedings. I loved the traditional costumes and typical Akan adornments that were on display. I admired the dance steps and the swaying of generous hips wrapped in craftily-cut African designs. But I had to scratch my head to guess who the boy seated at the forefront in the palanquin of the Okuapehene was. Yes, who was that young lad? The heir apparent? A beloved nephew? The last born of the old Chief’s mum? A slave (in 2014!)?

Eventually, I decided to make enquiries. And I was fortunate enough to chance upon Mr Sam Addo, a nephew of Okuapehene, who had come down from London for the festival. He explained to me, for the benefit of all the friends of ENJOY, that the young boy was “Okra”. He explained: “Okra is the soul of the big chief. He has to be pubescent, ideally below the age of 13. Okra follows the Okuapehene everywhere”. However I could not find out what the criteria for selecting the right boy to become Okra are. Any idea? e

Having commended the people of Okuapeman for celebrating Odwira Festival 2014 in unity, he went on to congratulate Oseadeeyor Addo Dankwa III for his exemplary leadership over the years. On cholera and Ebola, President Mahama spoke at length about the need for the people to adopt the necessary steps to help fight and prevent the diseases. e

THE DAY OF GERMAN UNITY CELEBRATED IN THE RESIDENCY OF GERMANY IN ACCRA
T
he 3rd October, Day of German Unity, has been observed in Ghana with a diplomatic reception hosted in the residency of the German Ambassador, His Excellency Mr Ruediger John. The Government of Ghana was represented by Minister of Transport, Honourable Dzifa Ativor. In his address before well over 400 invitees, the Diplomat commended Ghana for its democratic principles and stability, which makes the country enjoy high reputation in Germany. He emphasized the importance of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, an event that was made possible because the people fought for free development, democracy and the rule of law. On her part, Honourable Dzifa Ativor was glad a close cooperation has existed between Ghana and Germany in different development areas.

n Friday, the 17th of October 2014, the entire city of Accra came to a stand-still as Alisa Hotel launched its newly refurbished facilities.
As part of its expansion project which will be completed in December this year, some of the hotel’s existing facilities got major facelifts. The facilities launched were the Anabel’s Restaurant, the Table Bay Bar, the Oasis Lounge Bar and the Sahara Pool Bar.

About October: October is generally known as the month of haunts, scares and ghouls. History is very sketchy about the reason why that belief came to establish... but this is the month of Halloween. This may explain that or vice versa. Halloween? Halloween was a popular pagan festival of the dead. It goes back as far as 5 B.C. The ancient Celts — a race of people who lived in ancient Britain and Western Europe before the Romans came — celebrated the New Year on November 1. And they believed that the souls of the dead returned to Earth the night before. The Celts would leave food at their doors to encourage good spirits and wear masks to scare off the bad ones. Many centuries later, the Roman Catholic church, in an attempt to do away with pagan holidays, such as Halloween (and Christmas, which had been the Roman pagan holiday of Saturnalia) established November 1 as All Saint’s Day (in French, la Toussaint), in celebration of all the saints who do not have their own holy day. This day was formerly known as ‘Allhallowmas’, hallow meaning ‘holy’ or ‘holy person’. So, All Saints Day is known in England as All Hallows Day. During the massive Irish immigration into America in the 1840s, Halloween found its way to the United States, where it continued to flourish! The modern name Halloween comes from ‘All Hallows’ Evening’ or in the American slang ‘All Hallows’ Even, i.e. the eve of All Hallows’ Day. Hospital window Some time ago, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became infuriated when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, “This is for you, Daddy.” He was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box was empty. Did You Know? • Part of the White House was built by slaves. Indeed, twelve American presidents owned slaves and eight of them, starting with Washington, owned slaves while in office. he One Ghana United Against Ebola Project was launched at the Rawlings Park at Accra on Saturday, 18th October. The project aims to raise awareness about the Ebola virus disease (EVD), which is currently decimating through some countries within the West-African sub-region. Why One Ghana? Because EVD does not discriminate between rich/ poor, old/young or male/female. The dreaded haemorrhagic fever is one issue that demands that all sons and daughters of Ghana come together to address as one People. Being one country united by a common destiny, all must come together under this vision: One Ghana United against Ebola. At the Rawlings Park, project initiators interacted extensively with the market women and their customers on the issue, reiterated the dos and don’ts to avoid getting infected, and took the opportunity to share flyers and paste posters to keep the awareness fluttering. So from Accra to Axim, Kumasito to Gambaga, Wenchi to Keta, Koforidua to Bolga, the people of Ghana will speak with one voice: NO TO EBOLA! One Ghana United Against Ebola Project is an initiative of the Ebola Education Fund (EEF), a private sector initiative for the prevention of the EVD. It is driven by Dalex Finance and Leasing Cie. How Is Breast Cancer Diagnosed?
B
reast cancer responds to treatment best when it is detected early. The most effective way to detect breast cancer is by mammography.
A clinical—or physical—breast exam by your doctor complements mammography screening. Medical organizations don’t agree on the recommendation to check your breasts yourself. Breast self-exams are an option for women starting in their 20s. Patients should discuss the benefits and limitations of breast self-exams with their doctors.
Breast Self-Exams and Mammograms If you decide to do breast self-exam, make sure to go over how to perform it with your health care provider. Premenstrual changes can cause temporary thickening that disappears after your period, so it may be better to check your breasts three to five days after your period ends. If a breast self-exam makes you anxious or you have questions about how to perform it, consult your health care provider. Look for dimpling or changes in shape or symmetry. This may be best done by looking in a mirror. The rest of the breast self-exam is easiest in the shower, using soap to smooth your skin. Using light pressure, you should check for lumps near the surface. Use firm pressure to explore deeper tissues. Pinch all segments of the nipple and areola (the pigment area around the nipple) gently. If there is any discharge from the nipple—especially if it is bloody—see your doctor. Any time you find a new or unusual lump in your breast, have your doctor check it to make sure it is not cancerous or precancerous. Most lumps are benign and do not signal cancer. The best test for distinguishing a cyst from a solid tumor is ultrasound; a needle biopsy may also be done.
Several tests can help distinguish a benign lump from a cancerous tumor. Because malignant and benign lumps tend to have different physical features, imaging tests such as digital mammography, 3-D mammography, and ultrasoud can often rule out cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends yearly screening mammograms starting at age 40. However, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) does not recommend screening for women in their 40s. For women between the ages of 50 and 74, USPSTF experts say women should have mammograms every two years. They also say that there is not enough data to recommend screening after age 74. When you need a mammogram is a personal decision between you and your doctor. If you’re over 40, talk to you doctor about when you should begin mammogram screening. Breast lumps can be identified on a mammogram up to two years before they can be felt.

T
he 5km Run/Walk For A Cure Africa – Ghana is the main fundraising event that organises the Ghanaian non-profit organization Run For A Cure Africa – Ghana (RFCA Ghana). Last Saturday, the 2nd Edition was held at the Lincoln Community School in Abelempke, Accra and more than 800 runners/walkers of all ages joined the caused. RFCA Ghana seeks to improve the breast cancer awareness in Ghana and collect funds to launch free screening programs and ensure women diagnosed with breast cancer to seek immediate treatment. Thanks to the participants and the sponsors, RFCA Ghana has raised a goal of 70.000 USD for this year. The registration fee for an adult was 70 GhCedis and for children 40 GhCedis, including a t-shirt, BIB number, a snack and water. Proceeds will be used to continue with the awareness programs to erase social stigmas in the deepest rural areas, to launch an education program with high school girls and to create a fund for supporting the treatment of impoverished women. “Early detection and prompt treatment are the key to cure breast cancer”, states Milagros Mensah, Director of RFCA Ghana. “Despite breast cancer is 98% treatable when detected in early stages, in Africa only 1 out of 4 women diagnosed with breast cancer survives. Because of this fact, RFCA Ghana promotes the education about breast health and organises free screening sessions”. 26 | October 2014 ENJOY No 93

Last year, the first edition of the 5 km Run/ Walk For A Cure Africa – Ghana raised 61.000 USD, thanks to the participants and the donations. Funds were used to purchase a GE Alpha RT Mammography system and a 10 KVA UPS for the San Martin de Porres Hospital at Eikwe in Ellembelle District, Western Region. It Doesn’t Take Much To Make A Differ n her birthday this year, Khushboo Moolchandani, decided that she will kick-start something that had been on her heart for some time now – supporting sick children. Her search for the appropriate place came when she and her mother visited the Princess Marie Louise Children’s hospital in Accra.
O
Through her visit she was touched by the number of children suffering from Kwashiokor, a form of severe protein-energy malnutrition. She discovered a feeding rehab center the hospital runs which helps to support mothers and children after they have been discharged from the wards. The feeding program provides free meals as well as proper nutritional education for the mothers to equip them to better care for their children after the hospital care. The feeding program, an essential part of the recovery process of Kwashiokor, is led by a humble, passionate nurse called Auntie Stella. It desperately needs help. Khushboo decided to take action, she decided that this is where she wanted her personal donation to go. She thought further and asked her friends and colleagues to join her in putting their money towards the donation instead of birthday gifts or throwing a party. Within a week she was able to raise over 3,000GHC and over 1000GHC worth of food items.

The support was overwhelming – this could sustain the program for a couple of months. On the day of her birthday, accompanied by some of her friends, family and colleagues they made their first donation of a cheque 1000GHC and 1000GHC worth of food items. The remaining money will go towards supporting the program over the months, developing sustainable programs and a kitchen renovation for the rehab center. This will be an ongoing project with visits to the hospital every month. native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, Ms Christa Sanders arrived in Ghana in 2004, where she had the opportunity to help build the New York University’s Ghana programme (NYU Accra). As of September 1st, Ms. Sanders became the director of Webster University’s campus in Accra. She explains the unique features offered by the Webster University Ghana Campus: it is a uniquely global university with world-class faculty. The small classroom sizes allow fruitful interactions between students and lecturers, and even one-on-one sessions. Studying with Webster University offers the opportunity to study at eight different Webster campuses around the world (USA, Austria, China, Ghana, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Thailand and the United Kingdom) with the possibility of permanent transfer to another campus. Starting Out. Choose your eyeshadow. With entire stores designated just to eyeshadow options, choosing the right texture, hue, and brand can seem incredibly intimidating. Don’t allow the vast variety to scare you though - embrace it! Shadows come in every color imaginable, and can be found in loose powder, compact powder, and cream forms.

Use your stiff flat brush to put this on the inner corners of your eyes, sweeping it up and down to gather just slightly on the upper and lower lash line. Apply a light sweep of it as well just below your eyebrows. Add your middle hue. Take your color that is one step darker than your lightest - you medium shade. Use your flat brush to pat this color
over the entirety of your lid, from your lash line to your crease. Don’t go too much further above your crease or outwards from the corner of your eye. Contour your lid with your darkest shade. Use your dome brush with your darkest eyeshadow color to contour your eyelid. Start at the outside corner of your eye, and sweep the brush in a half-moon motion up and around to the center of your crease. Keep the shadow the darkest along your lash line, and fade it out as you move up. Feel free to draw the shadow up towards the end of your eyebrow a bit for an angled fan. Blend your eyeshadows. Clean your dome brush with antibacterial brush cleaner or soap and water, and dry it on a clean towel. Use your clean brush to blend along the edges of your shadow so that they fade nicely into your skin tone.
Creating a Smoky Eye with Your Eyeshadow Add your highlighter. Use your lightest color with your firm flat brush to brush on the inside corner of your eyes and directly under your eyebrows. This will highlight the areas of your face responsible for making your eyes look larger and brighter.
Apply your medium color. Use your stiff flat brush to apply your middle color along your entire eyelid. Start from the base of your lash line and your work way to slightly above the crease. Try to avoid brushing it up to meet your highlighter though. Create the smoky effect. Use your domed brush first to apply your darkest color along your upper lash line. Sweep the color across your entire lid, but only on the bottom ⅓. Then, use your pencil brush to apply a darker, more precise line of color along your lash line. Carry it to your bottom lash line. Use your pencil brush to add a bit of your darkest eye shadow color along your bottom lash line. Start at the outside corner and work your way to the inside corner, making it gradually lighter as you get closer to your inner tear duct. Blend your shadow. Use your dome brush after it has been cleaned well to blend your shadows together. You want to create a smooth graduation of color, so take a few minutes to softly fade your darkest shadow up into the middle hue. Avoid contacting the line of dark shadow near your lash line too much, as you don’t want to make that part look too faded from blending. e

Adonten’s Abigail Mortey Best STME Student In Africa Abigail Buerkour Mortey, 16, has won the Science, Technology, M sMathematics and Engineering (STME) Competition organised for
the Africa Region, by FAWE International in Nairobi, Kenya, recently to generate the interest of girls in Science, Mathematics and Engineering.. Her award-winning project involved the use of a local plant, ‘Opia abaa’, mixed with shea butter to repel mosquitoes. Indeed, her inspiration came for the project by observing how people at Adenta, a suburb of Accra — where she lives — would hang leaves of a particular plant around their windows and sometimes would burn them at bedtime to drive away mosquitoes. With the assistance of her very supportive Science teacher, Ms Adeline Bedjabeng, she investigated the properties of the plant at the Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine (CSRPM) at Akuapem Mampong. Satisfied with her discoveries, Abigail worked on creating a rubbing cream out of it with shea butter, a product which was “simple, cost effective and available”, to stick to the terms of the competition. Abigail Mortey, a form 3 General Arts student of the Adonten SHS (ADONSCO) in Aburi in the Eastern Region, represented Ghana in the contest together with another student from Aburi Girls’ SHS.

She is one of eight Student Ambassadors who volunteer to give tours of the campus to visiting students and parents, nostalgic alumni, and anyone wishing to learn more about the school a tour of the campus. Before the Student Ambassador program was initiated, there were haphazard drop-ins and requests for tours which administrators found disruptive on all levels. Valuing the impact

School News that an interface of visitors with LCS students would have, the Advancement Office launched the studentled walking tours on Wednesdays in 2013. A total of 55 student-led tours were organized in 20132014, many of the visitors were from multi national companies, while others were Embassy and UN staff and Ghanaian nationals interested in the school as well. The LCS Student Ambassadors, who are a diverse mix of nationalities, wear specially designed signature vests emblazoned with the school logo and mascot, the Lincoln Lion. They can be seen around campus chatting to prospective families about every element of LCS, from the grounds to the art classes on campus. What makes the tour so unique is that it is given through a student’s lens and encourages student volunteers to be creative, self-confident communicators thinkers and enquirers, some of the key IB Learner Profile traits. This year’s group is made up of a dynamic and confident group of 9th and 10th graders - High School students who have been at LCS for at least two years and are familiar with the campus. Valeria got into the program when she volunteered to be an LCS tour guide last year. “I offered to take a new girl around and I realized that I liked doing that,” said Valeria who is from Guatamala. She finds being a tour guide interesting because it’s about learning something new about the school every time there is a tour. “Add to the fact that you meet cool people,” she explained with a smile. Ninth grader Stefania Dracos from Greece also recently joined the program. “I think its great to have the privilege of getting to tell new parents what I think about the school too,” she said. All Student Ambassadors have to become familiar with a tour script which includes information on the LCS mission, demographics, the IB Diploma Program, Safety and Security Policy Procedures as well as

Visitors are also directed to the Counseling and College Offices, the Health Clinics, School Libraries and the Multi Purpose Hall (MPH) where theater and sports activities take place. Kingsford Brown-Dadzie, LCS’ Admission Office Assistant who mentors and supervises students under the Student Ambassador program explained that the best Student Ambassadors are those who show dedication, boldness to communicate with respect and conduct the tour with warm smiles, explained Brown-Dadzie. “I see that in all our Ambassadors,” he concluded. e

nce upon a Halloween creepy the count was getting rather sleepy. while he nodded napping, suddenly there came a tapping as of someone gently rapping at his castle door. “A visitor! he cried with glee. I think they’d like some treats from me! But when he looked outside his door, he saw darkness there, and nothing more. ‘Trick or treat” A small voice cried. The Count jumped up in great surprise. “Elmo? Is that you I see? It is!” said Elmo. “Happy Halloween!” Come in, come in,” the Count invited. “My first guest. I’M so excited!” But only seconds passed before they heard one tap, two taps, and then a third! When they took a glance outside, a frightening sight met both their eyes. “A ghost! A ghost!” they cried with fear. “Not me!” they heard. “There’s no ghost here!” Then Elmo noticed something more. He knew he’d seen those feet before! “Big Bird?” he asked. “Could it be you? ” “Yes, it’s me!” he shouted. “Boo!” Again the door closed with a snap. Again they heard that tap, tap, tap! “A trick-or treater?” Elmo wondered. The count looked scared. The black sky thundered. Through the window they took a peek, and what they saw made them shout, EEK!” A bony creature gazed at them “Oh no!” they cried. “A skeleton!” The creatur smile, took off his mask. The count couldn’t help but gasp. “Grover !” he said with some relief. “Thank goodness it’s just make -believe!” More friends arrived to trick or treat, and every costume looked quite neat. “ Come in, ”Count said “come everyone!” Let’s all have some spooky Fun!” And now the night was in full swing .The Count had planned for everything. But then, “Oh no!” a loud voice cried. “I hear a tapping from outside!”
Another guest? Count worried, wondered. Again, outside, the black Sky thundered. He looked around, then looked again. All ten friends were there with him. A monster, a pumpkin, a ghost, and a cat. Pirates, a robot, a witch in a hat. There was the Knight, the Skeleton too! So who was tapping? Nobody knew! Tap,tap,tap, they heard once more. Then they gathered at the door. Deep into that darkness peering, long they stood there wondering, fearing. Who could it be? What would it do? And then they smiled. They saw YOU! “Hooray! Andrea is here! said everyone. Activity: Roll one sheet of black cardboard into a cone and secure with tape. Trim the bottom of the cone so that it will stand up on the table. Use a bowl as a guide and trace a circle on the second sheet of black cardboard - make it larger than the bottom of your cone, as this will be the brim of the hat. Glue the cone to the circle and set aside to dry. Cut 1-2cm strips of felt and glue them around the cone - make concentric circles around your hat so it looks stripy, or try gluing the felt in a spiral from the bottom of the cone to the top, in a continuous line. You can be as creative as you like - use spots of felt, or cut out your favourite Halloween shapes and glue those on your black hat. Cut a strip of black felt to go around the base of the cone (this will cover any messy glue left behind after attaching the cone to the brim). Your witch hat is ready!

Pushing The Reset Button “Memory is a core aspect of intelligence that gives us the ability to review the past and to anticipate the future.” –The Arkivist
T
he beauty of a smart-phone or a gaming console is that you can “reset” the device to the factory specifications, to a point before you made any changes to the functionality of the device. It would be awesome if our “act of forgiveness” were to be that simple to execute. In as much, the action of forgiving comes only when there is a desire to forgive. While the desire to forgive may be the most powerful tool for any lifelong relationship to succeed, better stated, that without the element of forgiveness the relationship will never experience a lifelong materialization. The act of forgiveness resets our memory to an acceptable operating level, liking to the system restore on a PC. Infidelity, lies, deception, duplicity, mistakes, etc., all eliminate one singular ingredient for any successful relationship, trust. We all have in some way committed the aforementioned dishonorable acts, which we not only committed to or toward someone we love, but also to ourselves-our self image, our integrity, our emotional bank account. We must forgive if we desire to restore the relationship. We must forgive ourselves and others, if we are to enjoy the beauty of relationships and life with love in it. At the foundation level forgiveness is a conscience choice. In the words of Nelson Mandela,

“forgiveness liberates the soul and removes fear that is why it is such a powerful weapon”, to be able to free yourself from the hatred, anger, revenge, recrimination, and thoughtlessness that we can sometimes experience in relationships is elemental. Additionally, it aids the removing fear of reprisal or holding resentment of the offense committed. Some experts say that holding on to resentment can put you at a greater risk for a wide range of physical or emotional problems, including depression and high blood pressure-not to mention irreparable damage in a relationship moving forward. While not having a desire to forgive is terrible, the only thing worse is not being able to forgive. If you are not able to forgive, you may not and should not be forgiven, that’s relative law. Wounds of a past offense can take a long time to heal, we must remain patient. A willingness to forgive allows those involved in the relationship to give each other the benefit of starting over, rather than to “keep score” of wrongs. That, in turn, helps you to create an environment which keeps resentment in check and allows love, integrity, trust, etc. to grow. If you have hurt someone in some way, sincerely apologize. Even if you do not agree with their point

Directions Prepare the cake: Butter and flour a 10-cup fluted Bundt pan. Heat the cranberries in a pot heat the cranberries until they start to release their juices. Add 3/4 cup granulated sugar, and cook over medium heat until until juicy and the mixture reduces to 1 1/4 cups, about 15 minutes. Let cool completely. Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F. Whisk the milk, whole eggs and yolks, and vanilla in a medium bowl; set aside. Whisk the 3 cups flour, the remaining 1 3/4 cups sugar, the lemon zest, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Add the 3 1/4 sticks butter and beat with a mixer on low speed until moistened. Add half of the milk mixture, increase the speed to medium and beat 1 minute. Add the remaining milk mixture in two batches, beating between each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and beat again, about 30 seconds. Transfer 2/3 of the batter to the pan. Spoon the cranberry mixture in a ring around the middle of the batter (do not let it touch the pan). Top with the remaining batter and smooth evenly. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, 55 to 60 minutes. Meanwhile, make the syrup: Dissolve the 1/4 cup granulated sugar in 1/2 cup lemon juice in a saucepan over low heat. Remove the cake from the oven, poke the surface all over with a skewer and pour the syrup on top. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Carefully invert the cake onto a parchment-lined rack to cool completely. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and let sit overnight. When ready to serve, whisk the confectioners’ sugar and the remaining 2 tablespoons lemon juice until smooth. Spoon over the cake.
