Good music, a great message, and four guys standing for a cause that has global implications — this statement may come close to summing up Jars of Clay. The Christian band, with its mix of rock, blues, alternative, and folk, comes to the MSU Riley Center on Thursday, June 21, at 7:30 p.m. Jars of Clay got its start in the early 1990s when the original members were in college in Illinois. Soon after winning a gospel music competition in Nashville, the band moved there and began cranking out studio albums. The current members — Dan Haseltine, Charlie Lowell, Stephen Mason, and Matt Odmark — released their 11th studio album, “The Shelter,” in 2010. They’ve also released numerous compilation, cover, live, and holiday albums, and are no strangers to Grammy nominations, Grammy awards, and platinum certifications. Perhaps closer to their hearts than good music about the life of faith is the Blood:Water Mission, which the band members founded after witnessing the severe need in Africa for clean blood and clean water. Since its start, the Blood:Water Mission has opened at least three AIDS clinics in Africa and has drilled at least 1,000 wells on the continent. Tickets are $35 and $29 at the MSU Riley Center box office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at (601) 696-2200.
