HUMAN INGENUITY Why and how do we create? What are the consequences? Fashion Photography Inspired by Erté Anna Nolan My goal was to create a portfolio of fashion photography inspired by the famous artist Erté. I wanted to do something that was photography related, because this is something that I want to study further after grade 10. The product was a hard copy of my photos organized in a portfolio. Human ingenuity was my focus because I learned about all the technical aspects of taking photos. To produce my own portfolio of photos I had two photo-shoots. The first one was a practice photo-shoot, which helped me see what worked well, what took more time than expected and what I had to improve on for the next one. The second photo shoot went well and ran smoothly. I really enjoyed staging the photo shoots and selecting the best pictures for the portfolio. I gained a better understanding of how a camera works and how to put a good photo together. My pictures are worth a million words! Children’s Book About Jordan Sabrina Seikaly The goal of my personal project was to create a children’s book that follows the characters through their journey through three famous places in Jordan. My product was a children’s book of ten pages, plus an illustration of each place. My project’s Area of Interaction was Human Ingenuity because my book provided children with a few facts to add to their knowledge of Jordan and its history, as well as to help improve their reading skills. The first step to create my product was to research Jordan’s famous cities and gather further information on the ones I chose. I then studied a few books for my target market’s reading abilities and websites with tips on story writing. I then wrote the story, drew the characters and printed out a picture of each site. I thoroughly enjoyed writing the story and drawing the characters that would be featured. The project enabled me to utilize my writing skills and to improve my artistic skills. I learned to take initiative and to manage my time wisely in order to complete tasks before their deadlines so I would have time to gather feedback and improve.

Business Plan for a Retro-clothing Retail Store Janel Saydam My goal was to create a business plan for a Dubai retro-clothing retail store The Area of Interaction for my project was Human Ingenuity because what I did was entrepreneurial, and I demonstrated how I was able to identify a potential market in Dubai and make something of it. I interviewed an owner of a store in my old Toronto neighborhood, who has a store similar to the one that I had in mind. He explained what inspired him to create and run a business like this. I researched the components to include in a business plan, and I was able to predict my budget and potential profits. I also learned about wholesale, and I now know where to find really cheap clothes. Internal Combustion Engine Samuel Shoesmith My goal was to learn how a car engine works. To achieve this goal, I created internal views of a physical internal combustion engine that displayed the working parts in motion from various angles. I researched the history, the components of the engine, how they work, and the physics behind it. Human Ingenuity was the focus of my project. I used two useful books, which were designed for people learning about the internal combustion engine. I had no initial knowledge of this topic, but I chose it because it relates to my future career as a Avionic Technician. Picking a topic that I knew little about paid off because it made me want to learn about it more and quicker as I knew I had a time limit.

EPL 12-13 Ameer Alwash My goal was to learn how to create a website, which links to the Area of Interaction of Human Ingenuity. I accomplished my goal by making a website about the English Premier League (EPL). I researched the best program to use to make the website.

I put the

fixtures with the scores, the goal scorers, the minute they scored and the man of the match. The website also had the history of the EPL along with each time in the 20122013 league.

I put the standings of the

teams, and the top 5 goal scorers in the current season and the best 10 players in the history of EPL. I also put pictures of every stadium. I put the pictures, name, number and position of every player in the EPL.

Paintings of the Syrian Civil War Ghaith Al Saseh My goal was to create a series of paintings showing the events of the Syrian Civil War. I created a product to give the audience a perspective of the war. Human ingenuity relates to my work because I created 4 paintings about Syria. I had to collect my materials which are 4 canvases, paint, spray paint, brushes and stencil paper. I painted each canvas in its own style of background. I learned more above the Syrian Civil War and enjoyed using my artistic skills to convey its events. I gained better experience in art as I know more about the artist Banksy, and I learned more about stencil art making. Dance Routine To Techno Music Andrees Danker My goal was to create a dance routine to techno music. The Area of Interaction was Human Ingenuity. I researched online to gain knowledge and understanding about dance. Throughout my research, I determined that creating dance routine was not as easy as it looks. You must first analyze and break down the music to know exactly when what happens in the song. Once you’re familiar with the song, you have to create different parts for each broken down section of the song. Once you’re finished, just put everything together and film the result with a video camera. I used my teachers and family as sources as well as my supervisor for valuable feedback. I learned that dance is a fragile subject that should not be taken easy. Furthermore, it is important to remember that anybody can do anything if they set their mind to it. I was really impressed by my outcome and what I learned in the process. The words that would describe the experience most would be fun, interesting, and surprising. Most of all I gained confidence throughout the project.

Comic Book Website Oluwatobiloba Oyenuga My goal was to create a comic book website that would not only entertain others but send a message. Hence, Human Ingenuity is my Area of Interaction. I researched how to write comics, with a focus on Manga (Japanese) comics. I uploaded my comic book on a website, so that others can access it and provide me with feedback. It took me some time to create the images of my characters, so I was unable to produce the number of pages that I initially had in mind. This project taught me about patience, perseverance and commitment. Even though we have handed in the report and process journal, I still plan on working on my online comic website. I am proud of what I accomplished so far, but I know that I am capable of much more.

Design a Wedding Dress Tamara Lotta My goal was to design a wedding dress from the back and the front. I also drew the veil and the details of the embroidery and the pearls. My Area of Interaction was Human Ingenuity.

I did a survey to

determine what kind of wedding dress teenage girls want. I used the

results

determine

of

the the

survey

to

design

specifications of my dress design.

Portrait Using Oil Anastasia Zubareva I am passionate about Visual Arts. For 4 years, I was enrolled in a school that catered primarily for the arts. I participated in many competitions and won many times. My drawings were printed on calendars and postcards. I also have a medal for the international competition for the drawing "Allegory of Autumn", which was attended by 500 people, where only 15 won medals, myself included.

I had experience with drawing

portraits using different tools such as pastels and color pencils. Also I had lessons with the Uzbek portrait artist, Margarita Shuvalova, who has a silver medal for the portraits drawings. In Uzbekistan, she taught me how to construct the human face the right way. So Art was the obvious theme for my Personal Project. My goal was to paint a portrait using oil based paint, something that I have not worked with before. My product relates to Human Ingenuity because I am creating something new. Art is a powerful medium that can be used to convey a message and/or emotions. It took me two weeks to draw an oil portrait for my aunt. I used many sources, such as books, portrait paintings, and art teachers to help me create my final product. This experience not only helped me develop my artistic skills, but I worked on my time-management, verbal and written communication skills.

Black & White Photography Exhibition Plan Hassan Tamimi Black and white photography allows one to focus on shapes, shadows, textures and lines. It seeks to enhance the picture so one can clearly see the genuine message that art piece is conveying. Hence, my focus was on Human Ingenuity. My initial goal was to a host a Black & White Photography Exhibition to showcase my own photos. I wanted to then sell my photos and donate the funds to the Dubai Care Foundation to help provide basic educational resources to schools in developing countries. However, due to time constraints I modified my goal to come up with a plan that shows how an exhibition such as this can be organized and done. I interviewed professional photographers & exhibition managers to gain more insight on all the necessary elements required to plan for an exhibition.

COMMUNITY & SERVICE How do we live in relation to each other? How can I contribute to the community? How can I help others?

Improving the Skills of the U15 Girls’ Basketball Team Adam Harutunian My goal was to improve the skills of the U15 Girls’ Basketball Team by December 2012. My product was to create a starting five line-up from the team and then have a “player biography” on those players. The biography would include such parts as a table highlighting their individual strengths and areas of improvement. In the product, I also included line graphs showing the girls’ steady improvement over each practice in different skills such as dribbling, lay-ups and overall fitness. I had a criterion for each skill that I used to determine the level at which the player was performing. Community & Service was my focus because I used my time afterschool to organize and coach the practices for the Girls’ Basketball Team. I made sure that every practice focused on a certain skill, so that at the end they received a “well-rounded” overall skill level. I gained some coaching experience for the second time. Website for Coaching Girls’ Soccer Ahmed Saidi My goal was to make a website that coaches can use to coach girls’ soccer. My area of interaction was Community & Service. Before creating the website, I coached the U15 girls’ soccer team at JBS as an ECA activity. That gave me a perspective to coaching because it was the first time for me to do such a thing. I then made a website using the information that I gathered from personal experience, senior coaches and text resources. The part I enjoyed the most was the creation of the website, especially knowing that it will be later on seen by many people.

How can I organise a 2km charity run in my school to raise funds for Dubai Center for Special Needs? Butti Bin Mejren For my personal project I set the goal as organizing a charity marathon for high school students in JBS to raise funds for Dubai Center for Special Needs The products / outcomes that

made

have

been

multiple, this included the bill while donating the money to charity serving as evidence as well as the sign up papers and last but not least the video with photographs proving that the run has taken place and was successful. The area of interaction that I had been working into was Community and service because donating money to a charity by raising funds is community and service. The steps I have taken were that I needed to get permission from the school principal as well as a teacher to supervise. After receiving the confirmation form the principal I advertised the event on social networks as well as word of mouth. I collected the money from students and a teacher then donated that to the charity and received a recite. The most enjoyable part in the whole project was socializing with the students while telling them about then run what I gained was better socializing skills with students I never spoke to. Promotional Video for JBS Yasmien Peck When I first got the personal project, I immediately knew that I was going to create video. The next step was to figure out what my topic was going to be. I decided that I wanted to make a video ‘promoting’ my school by filming a day in the life of a secondary student. I focused on Community and Service as my area of interaction because my video could be used by new students to see what the school is like. I had to brainstorm what topics I wanted to include in this video. The actual video needed to be better quality and longer so that it could be used as a proper promotional video for the school. I really enjoyed filming secondary students during their lessons as I could what other grades experienced during their day. Overall the personal project was both challenging and enjoyable to do and I learnt a lot about time management and having a detailed action plan.

Organizing Two Ramadan Iftars Ali Al Shawihi This project made more reflective, organized and a better communicator. My goal was to organize two Ramadan iftars for labourers in the UAE. Community and Service was the focus of my project. At the iftars, I spent some time with the labourers, and I got to know them and gain perspective of how difficult it was for them to be away from their families. I am proud of what I accomplished, and I aim to organize more iftars in the future. Proposal for the Dubai Zoo Balint Andrasi My goal was to create a proposal on how the living conditions for animals in the Dubai Zoo can be improved. I wanted to take action for this serious problem and hopefully influence people who are in charge of those decisions. I came up with many realistic improvements, which I put in a 60 page booklet. To make the detailed proposal was challenging for me because English is a new language for me. Before starting at JBS, I went to an English language school for six weeks. This opportunity helped me develop my writing and comprehension skills. However, the Personal Project further enhanced those skills. When I gave my questionnaire to visitors at the zoo, I had to use my speaking skills. After completing my product, I went to the Dubai Zoo and asked them if I can do some voluntary job. I also tried to offer my proposal to the Director. The answer was this: “I can’t work in the zoo because it’s not allowed. The zoo will close soon”. I read just recently in the Gulf News that the Dubai Zoo will close and the animals will be transferred to another (much better) zoo.

ENVIRONMENTS Where do we live? What resources do we have or need? What are my responsibilities?

Feasibility of Solar Panels in Residential Areas in UAE Abhinav Das My goal was to investigate the feasibility as well as problems and solutions associated with the use of solar panels in residences in the United Arab Emirates. Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, thus reducing the need to burn fossil fuels which cause pollution and generate climate change-inducing carbon dioxide emissions. I got my inspiration after considering the contradiction that a country receiving nearly 365 days of sunlight a year does not appear to be making any use of solar energy in residences and commercial buildings. Then after further research, I realized that the UAE is ambitious in encouraging the development of a solar power industry, and this provided further motivation. I explored the economics of solar panels. I explained how to calculate cost saving and payback period, then delved into detailed analysis of savings and payback periods of systems for different scenarios, with single villa installations, centralized installations and considerations for the owners of villa compounds and installations in apartment and commercial buildings. Graphical depictions were entirely self-made and helped to show clearly the cost-benefits of different choices. Then I looked into the demand considerations, analyzing the results of a survey which I had collected. I was able to conclude that residential solar installations are currently not viable and a proper regulatory framework and incentive scheme is required. I improved this further before distributing my report to industry professionals by outlining more clear recommendations. I presented my findings in the form of a research report. This report contained a detailed analysis based on my findings and a conclusion on whether the deployment of solar panels in UAE residences is currently feasible, and if not how could it be made feasible and how long we would have to wait. The Area of Interaction is Environments.

Water Quality Study in Beaches of Ajman and Sharjah Sabrina Chelli My goal was to analyze water from a total of 9 beaches in Ajman and Sharjah to determine the effect that the surrounding environment has on the water quality. Parameters that I collected data on and subsequently analyzed included Fe²⁺, Cu²⁺, PO₄³⁻, P and P₂O₅ concentrations as well as pH, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity and salinity. I spent a month analyzing water samples from 9 different beaches with the use of a Spectrophotometer machine. My product was professional laboratory report similar to those found in the Canadian Journal on Chemical Engineering & Technology. We all have a duty to preserve our natural environment and to understand the factors that can disrupt the balance in ecosystems. This project has only further fuelled my love for the environment and science.

HEALTH & SOCIAL EDUCATION How do I think and act? How am I changing? How can I look after myself and others?

Raising Awareness about Multiple Sclerosis Abdulla Salem “Research figures show MS affects around 25 to 50 people in 100,000 in Arabic populations and about 100 per 100,000 in Northern Europeans who display the highest risk of MS across the world. Globally, MS affects women more than men and often begins between the ages of 20 and 40. (Zawya.com) My goal was to raise awareness about Multiple Sclerosis. To accomplish this, I gave a presentation to the grades 6, 7 and 8 students in JBS. Health and Social Education was my focus because I informed students about a condition that is becoming more frequent and might potentially affect them in the future, assuming it has not done so already. I collected information from a various sources such as websites, books and surveys. I also interviewed some patients and doctors. Addressing more than 100 students was not an easy task, but I was able to communicate to them how this disease develops and what MS patients have to endure on a daily basis. Benefits of Basketball Chandler Dague My goal was to inform grade 6 to 8 students about the benefits and the history of basketball. I achieved my goal based on the answers of the survey questions that I gave to students

after

I

conducted

my

Prezi

presentation on basketball. The outcome was more than what I had expected. I expected the students to only remember certain key facts throughout my Prezi. The students were able to retain the information that I shared with them. My area of interaction was Health and Social Education because I studied the health benefits of basketball. I enjoyed talking to the younger students and learning new things about basketball.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Mohamad Hamza My goal was to create a 6 minutes video documentary about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This documentary included the history, description and techniques of this martial art. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is my dayto-day

routine

that

strengthens my mental and physical

health.

Hence,

Health and Social Education is the focus of my project. I interviewed

international

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighters. My best interview was with the

Ultimate

Fighting

Championship Hall of Famer and Mixed Martial Arts Icon Royce Gracie. Royce is the son of Helio Gracie, the creator of this sport. I drafted an outline of the documentary which I followed when filming. I filmed and edited the video. I wanted my audience to know that size does not matter, since I was able to beat someone who was bigger, taller and heavier than me. It is all about leverage. Make-up Collaboration Monica Seiwert My goal was to fuse the different styles of makeup artists, along with mine, to create an instructional guide on how to achieve an easy everyday look. Makeup can give girls' confidence, and I want to help them achieve this look. Health and Social Education was the focus on my project.

APPROACHES TO LEARNING How do I learn best? How do I know? How do I communicate my understanding?

Achieving Level 7 in Playing the Chinese Bamboo Flute Zuhuan (Tony) Lui I love music because it allows us to express many different emotions. I love it even more when it relates to my Chinese culture. The Chinese bamboo flute is a great classical instrument which has a history of seven thousand years. My goal was to improve my playing level from 5 to 7. To show this, I learned how to play a Chinese song that I have never played before. I videotaped myself playing that song and compared my performance with that of a professional player.

My grandfather,

who

played

Chinese bamboo flute for 60 plus years, also evaluated my performance to inform me if I have advanced to level 7. My Area of Interaction was “Approaches to Learning because I had to learn new skills to graduate to a higher level. This experience not only allowed me to learn to play a challenging song, but I also learned how to evaluate sources, come up with an action plan and organize my time.

Educational Resource Computer Program for Children Olesia Kochergina My goal was to create a computer program for children from ages 7 to 10 to improve their cognitive skills in English and Mathematics. I chose Approaches to Learning as my Area of Interaction because I wanted to make a game which will teach children new skills. Before creating the program, I had to learn about my target mark, primarily what skills should they already have and what skills I want them to practice. I looked at online educational websites to gain more insight on this. I learned new programming codes to create my product. I also learned to come up with an action plan and to manage my time to meet the deadlines. Introduce about Japanese earthquakeYuka Kurata In March 2011, an earthquake and tsunami attacked the FUKUSHIMA Nuclear Power Plant. At the time, I lived in Osaka City, located 700km from Fukushima. I felt the earth shake for 90 seconds. In my previous Junior High school in Japan, our Student Council decided to help the Junior High school in Miyagi, near Fukushima, and my friend and I collected contributions for that school. My goal for this project was to explain how earthquakes happen and the impact they have on our lives. My target audience was the Grade 6 students, since they study natural disasters in their Humanities subject.

I wanted students to know that we have the possibility for

earthquakes to take place in Dubai. Also, I wanted to share how they could prepare for earthquakes if it should happen, and what the Japanese government has done and the countermeasures they have taken. I created a presentation which included animations and quizzes using for the Grade 6 Humanities class. The Area of Interaction that I chose is ‘Approaches to Learning.’

Indian Culture Jigyasa Choudhary My goal was to learn more about Indian culture, with a focus on dance and fashion. My product was a painting that displayed what I learnt about those two aspects of culture. The focus of Human Ingenuity allowed me to investigate the evolution and process of human creativity. I enjoyed this project since art is my passion. However, this experience showed me the power of art and how it is a medium that conveys various aspects of our culture.

Tole Paintings Yui Shiwa Tole painting is a technique where the media can be metal and/or wooden objects such as furniture, utensils, and similar household items. My goal was to produce two Tole Paintings, a technique that I have not done prior to the Personal Project. I focused on Approaches to Learning because I had to teach myself how to create 2 Tole paintings. I drew my designs on paper first, which allowed me to practice my drawing skills as well as to choose the right colour scheme. I was then able to transfer my drawings to a wooden medium. I look forward to drawing more complicated designs now that I am comfortable with this form of art.
