Week 6: Personal Discernment and Reflection Overview During the last week of the Introduction Track, we will engage in personal exploration, discernment, and reflection. This is an opportunity for chapter members to learn about themselves and to forge deeper relationships by learning more about each other’s core values and beliefs. In doing so, every chapter member should feel comfortable speaking openly, honestly, and genuinely. The conversations this week should create a safe space for dialogue that sets a tone for the year. Component of the mission statement highlighted: ✦ “empowering students”

Discernment Activity Estimated time: 10 minutes Because this week’s conversations are challenging in the amount of transparency required, you may find it valuable to lead into the discussions with an activity. If you choose to do so, the activity should be one which allows chapter members to begin thinking about their beliefs and values. Possible Activities ✦ Post-It Note Museum ✦ Around your meeting room, put up pieces of paper with different questions on them. ✦ Everyone goes around the room and puts a sticky note with their answer under each question. ✦ Afterwards, people can go look at how everyone answered each question. ✦ Two-Circle Rotations ✦ Half of the chapter stands in a small circle in the center of the room. The other half forms a surrounding, larger circle, so that each person is facing another person. ✦ Pose a question to the group (e.g. What inspires you?). ✦ Allow each pair to answer the question for 1-2 minutes. ✦ After the time is up, the outside circle rotates one person over so that everyone has a new partner! Continue discussing and rotating until the circles are back to where they began.

globalhealthU Discussion Estimated time: 20-30 minutes This is the time for chapter member to engage in open and trusting discussion. It is important that these discussions happen within small groups, so that every person is able to speak honestly and engage with their peers. This discuss is meant to flow freely and act as a forum for sharing, learning, and growing. Possible Discussion Questions ✦ What inspires you? ✦ What do you hope your legacy will be? ✦ What are your top three values? Why do you value your values? ✦ How have you integrated your values into your daily life? What actions do you take that illustrate your values? ✦ Why are you here? Why are you in GlobeMed? Use “This I Believe” Statements ✦ During Week 1, your chapter members wrote This I Believe statements. During this time, let them revisit what they wrote . Consider using these statements to guide the discussion.; alternatively, distribute the statements near the end and use them as a conclusion. Possible Discussion Questions ✦ What does your This I Believe say about you? What does it say about your understanding of the world? ✦ What experiences in your life have guided you to this believe? ✦ How are your values manifested in your statement? ✦ Has your understanding of your believe changed at all over the discussions of the past 6 weeks? ✦ Looking at your statement now, would you make any revisions or additions? Why?
