Introduction Track

Week 2: Meet the Network

THIS TRACK INTRODUCTION TRACK Goal: Provide chapter members a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of GlobeMed.

THIS WEEK MEET THE NETWORK Goals: Give chapter members a more thorough understanding of the key players in GlobeMed’s network. Engage in a discussion about what it means to be part of a network and a movement.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND SMALL GROUP FACILITATORS You should use your small group facilitators to help lead this week’s discussion. Make sure the appropriate people are contacted and prepared to lead!

Overview With so many exciting things happening at individual chapters, it is easy to forget that GlobeMed is a national organization comprised of a National Office, chapters and partners, a Board of Directors, and much more. During the second week of globalhealthU, we will become more familiar with the entire GlobeMed network. This will enable students to feel more connected to other chapters and the National Office. From this point, we will discuss what is means to be part of the larger network that is the movement for global health equity. Component of the mission statement highlighted ✦ “strengthen the movement” Overall Key Points ✦ We have 46 chapters, 49 partners, and a National Office to support us. ✦ We are a student-run non-profit. ✦ Our work is part of larger movement for global health equity. Overall Resource ✦ Meet the Network PowerPoint

Meet the Chapters and Partners Estimated time: 5-10 minutes During this time, you can introduce the network’s chapters and partners. How this is done is up to your discretion; whether you choose to briefly review all of the chapters and partners or select a few chapters and partners to highlight is up to you. Key Points ✦ We have 46 chapters and 49 partners all around the world. (We have more partners than chapters because a few chapters have local partners and international partners.) ✦ If there are other chapters in close proximity, it may be valuable to point these out to allow for more community building and communication.

globalhealthU Resources ✦ The Imagine2030 website has a couple of resources about chapters and partners. (The login is “wdsj” and the password is “our-impact” ) ✦ http://www.imagine2030.org/our-impact/ has links to every chapter’s impact page. ✦ http://www.imagine2030.org/meet-the-network/ lists the organizations and partners with a brief description of the project. ✦ http://173.203.99.202/globemed/map provides an interactive map of our network, with links to chapter impact pages and partner websites. ✦ The GlobeMed website has a map of all of the chapters across the country and a list of their partners: http://globemed.org/about/the-globemed-network/ Note: Map does not yet include the new chapters added in 2011-2012. Possible Activities/Presentation Methods ✦ Use the imagine2030.com website to go through each (or a couple of ) chapter’s impact page: http:// www.imagine2030.org/our-impact/ ✦ Create a PowerPoint with chapters, partners, impact, pictures, and any other relevant information. ✦ Matching game ✦ Create two sets of cards, one listing each university chapter, and the other listing all of the partners, with a brief description of what they do. ✦ To play the game, shuffle all of the cards together and lay them out on a flat surface in a grid. ✦ This game can be played in teams or individually ✦ A player picks up to cards. If they are a partner/chapter match, then the player gets to keep the cards. If they are not a match, then the player has to put them back. ✦ The point of the game is to remember where all of the cards are so during your turn, you can pick up a correct match.

Meet the National Office Estimated time: 5-10 minutes At the center of all our partners and chapters is the National Office (NatO). During this time, you can teach about the purpose of NatO, who the staff members are, and their specific roles. Key Points ✦ The National Office is a team made up of both full-time and student staff working out of Evanston, IL. The National Office is located in Evanston because that is where Northwestern University, our first chapter, is located. Because of this, student staff members are all undergraduate students at Northwestern. Students cannot be in the Northwestern chapter and the National Office. ✦ Because there are numerous people on the National Office staff, we recommend focusing on a few of these people: ✦ Full time staff: ✦ Maya Cohen, Executive Director ✦ Bianca Nguyen, Director of Development ✦ Sarah Endres, Program Director ✦ Alyssa Smaldino, Program Director ✦ Student staff: ✦ Sid Singh and Sue Kulkarni, Co-Directors of the Global Health Summit

globalhealthU Rachel Markon and Neal Emery, Co-Directors of globalhealthU Kate Mullersman, Director of Alumni Relations Jill Shah, Director of Marketing and Communications We have a huge (and growing!) network, and we need a team of people to make sure that our chapters and partners are connected, well trained, and well supported. It is National Office’s responsibility to do this through fundraising, outreach to other health organizations, chapter advising, logistical work, and many other functions. Our National Office supports chapter programs and operations throughout the network We are a student-run non-profit and the National Office regulates our work to comply with financial and organizational regulations. All chapter members are encouraged to contact any member of the National Office staff with questions or comments! ✦ ✦ ✦

Possible Activities/Presentation Method ✦ Pin the tail on the Donkey! ✦ Put up pictures of all of the National Office Staff. ✦ In teams, have chapter members try to match names and office titles to all of the pictures. ✦ The team with the most correct identifications wins!

Meet the Larger Network Estimated time: 5-10 minutes GlobeMed isn’t just composed of university chapters, partners, and the National Office. As a non-profit organization, this organization has a Board of Directors, donors and supporters, alumnae (from both chapters and NATO), and organizations with which we work together. During this time, explore GlobeMed’s larger network. Resources ✦ Network Map ✦ http://www.globemed.org/about/staff-board/ at the end of this page there are bios of all of the Board Members ✦ http://www.stillharbor.org/praxis-network/ gives an overview of all of the organizations in the Praxis Network, a global health network oh which GlobeMed is a member.

globalhealthU Possible Questions ✦ After viewing all of the components of our network, how has your perception of GlobeMed changed? ✦ How can we, as students, contribute to the network and movement, both now and in the future? ✦ How can building a network now affect our work when we leave college? ✦ Here is where you can discuss the component of the mission statement, “strengthen the movement.” How is our work part of the larger movement for global health equity?
