National Involvement As well as all our activity locally, Medilink EM remains very active at the national level. Medilink EM has grown over the years into one of the biggest and strongest members of the Medilink UK network, the national health technology business support organisation, and we continue to look for ways to work together for the benefit of all our 1,500 members throughout the UK.

Medilink UK continues to work with Government, national trade associations and other bodies to ensure our members’ voices are heard and help shape public sector policy. Medilink EM takes the lead in representing Medilink UK at the UK MedTech Forum, the MHRA Med Devices Industry Liaison Group, the ABHI Technical and Regulatory Policy Group, the KTN Health Board and the Ministerial MedTech Strategy Group (MMTSG). In addition, through our Medilink UK partners, we also have representation on the NHS Suppliers Board, SBRI Board, and with the United Life Sciences Association. Through all these groups we have been striving, in these times of austerity and significant cuts to the public purse, to ensure that our sector gets the best deal possible and is not overlooked. In recognition of all this hard work we have undertaken, Medilink EM’s Chief Executive was recently personally thanked by George Freeman, Minister for Life Sciences. Recognising the important regional role that Medilink EM performs we were asked to facilitate a consultation on the Accelerated Access Review (AAR) by the Office for Life Sciences. This work should help ensure that the views of regional

4

MedTech SMEs are taken into consideration in this major strategic review, and demonstrates the role Medilink EM can play in mobilising the smaller companies that make up the majority of this thriving sector. The skills-focused Science Industry Partnership was the first example of two regions (Medilink East & West Midlands) collaboratively delivering a project for the benefit of industry, and we aim to do much more of this in the future. We are also delighted to be working in partnership with MedTech Innovation, for the third year, to deliver a national event. This four-in-one show consists of the largest dedicated MedTech exhibition in the UK, coupled with a national conference, seminars and the Medilink UK Awards dinner. Medilink EM lead on the conference strand and our aspiration is for this to become a must attend event, along with UK HealthTech, the sister Medilink UK event. Looking ahead, Medilink EM aims to maintain its position as the regional leader in developing business networks for life science companies by securing new revenue streams and delivering support programmes for the benefit of the sector. In addition, we will continue to increase our activity in influencing and guiding public sector policy.

Sector Initiatives iNET In September, Medilink EM’s largest and longest running support programme came to an end after 7.5 years. During that time, the programme brought over £8m of European funding to over 1000 companies. Launched in 2008 the Healthcare and Bioscience iNet was a large-scale publicly funded programme providing sector-specialist support to SMEs and individuals on their innovation journey from concept to market. Initially funded by the regional development agency, EMDA, further funding was then secured in 2010 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), which enabled delivery of activity on the programme until 30 September 2015. This support was provided in various forms; •

Face-to-face advisory sessions - acting as a critical friend and providing guidance and information

Grant funding to the sector

Brokerage to other forms of business support

Workshops and networking

Facilitating connections to other businesses, university academics and departments, NHS organisations and clinicians

Bespoke signposting to other accessible and relevant grants or funding

Throughout the programme, 1005 individual businesses were supported, and 189 events were held-demonstrating the vibrant nature of our sector and the value people see in our support. Feedback from participants in the programme, that was received as part of an independent, evaluation indicates that new products, services and processes are already being introduced to the market, with 66% of the companies supported having made at least one new launch, and a similar percentage planning new launches, meaning that the support is translating into economic benefit.

Case Study: Pure Drug Safety Pure Drug Safety is an experienced drug safety outsource solution provider to the pharmaceutical industry with over 50 years of collective experience across all phases of drug development for innovative and generic products as well as devices. With expertise in Pharmacovigilance, Medical Writing, Patient Information, EudraVigilance Medicinal Product Dictionary (EVMPD) and ISO IDMP, the company offers a full range of services from case handling through to training and auditing. With mandatory pharmacovigilance legislation being updated and new initiatives coming into force, Carol Kingstone, Managing Director, approached Medilink to explore whether funding could help them develop new offerings around Identification of Medicinal Products XEVMPD and ISO IDMP data storage. A successful application for grant funding enabled the company to recruit new and highly experienced staff members. This has supported the development of their new services, facilitated a valuable business-to-business collaboration, created further jobs and generated significant increases in customer base and revenue generation. Carol commented: ‘Working in partnership with Medilink has added a completely new focus to our business. A truly exciting partnership which is growing year on year!’

“The iNet funding made a massive difference to us. It allowed us access to the very latest, cutting edge technology and extra staff at the right time, opening many scientific doors that were otherwise closed and leading to new collaborations that would not have been possible without it.”

“I haven’t got a bad word to say about them, they are fantastic, always giving us useful information and making good suggestions.”

“Decision making in grant applications has been very quick – this is key and very important as many other grant systems are very slow and this does not work well for businesses.”

“Our experience with the Medilink EM iNet team has been excellent, they have held our hands throughout and I really can’t praise them enough. The only thing is – we shot ourselves in the foot a bit by not realising earlier what value and benefits they offer.”

Clearview Med UK is an early stage company developing innovative childfriendly solutions to the issues with Amblyopia treatment. Mazz Awan, founder of Clearview Med UK Ltd and Amblyopia specialist, identified a key barrier to the success of the treatment being a lack of co-operation from the children themselves. In response, she designed a new ergonomically shaped eye patch that is child friendly and comfortable to wear, and created a complementary education package to support families and encourage their on-going commitment to the treatment, making it more fun for children and reducing anxiety. Patient involvement and materials testing, as well as tooling, were required in order to fully develop the product. Following strategic direction by the iNet team towards a financial solution to support the project, funding of around £71K was secured from Innovate UK as well as training funds from the Science Industry Partnership. This has helped achieve the new product’s development schedule and move it closer to commercialisation. Mazz Awan commented: ‘This is a condition that can be corrected with the right treatment, but otherwise can have a negative impact on quality of life into adulthood. We are delighted to be able to move forward, continue research and development and organise trials.’

Medilink EM wants to thank all who engaged with the project and helped to make it a great success.

Sector Initiatives Medilink Professional Development Members are at the forefront of any Medilink EM activity, and developing the skills of the workforce is a key area for all of our member companies. The Medilink Professional Development (MPD) programme has allowed our team to work in collaboration with Medilink West Midlands to develop a skills strategy that fits with the needs of our members and the wider SME community. Through MPD, a suite of training courses has been developed specifically tailored to industry needs.

Our team have had positive feedback from members who have joined the MPD programme: “(The Speaker was) clearly very knowledgeable- presentations were well structured and he was very patient.” Keith Morris, Morris Healthcare Consulting

“My confidence to stand up and give a presentation has grown as a direct result of attending the course” Malcolm Souter, HORIBA UK Ltd

“A fantastic event- great overall presentation of common mistakes and how to overcome them” Rob Taylor, Pal International

Training across a wide range of workforce development topics has been undertaken and the MPD programme has encouraged more companies to review their training needs and upskill their workforce. The other area of focus for MPD is on new entrants to the sector. Under the SIP programme, a group of school leavers have completed a pilot programme designed to introduce them to the wider career opportunities in healthcare. The group spent the summer gaining work experience at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Synergy Healthcare, who provide services to the NHS. The programme, run by Derby College with Medilink EM support, also gave them health and safety qualifications, employability skills, CV writing and job application skills. A similar programme was run in the West Midlands. Additional funding through the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership has enabled us to work with Medilink EM member Journeymen Scientists to create two short intervention programmes. One of these enables graduates to develop the skills demanded by industry; the second supports life scientists returning to employment after a period away from the workplace. The aim of these programmes is to increase employability potential for the life science job market, help retain a quality graduate skillset, and bring individuals with relevant experience and skills back to the workforce, all of which will increase the skills pool and benefit the life sciences sector. Medilink are keen to further support SMEs in developing skills in the workforce and will be actively seeking further funding streams in 2016 to carry on the work started in 2015.

Fund-Finders for Innovation and Business Growth From a bustling office in Castle Donington, Matt Symonds of TBAT Innovation describes why the wily innovator continues to beat a path to their door.

It seems an age since the crash of late 2008, the demise of many Government-funded enterprise support organisations, and the collective corporate belt-tightening. Although austerity measures remain in place, there is a distinct wave of confidence across some industrial sectors, not least in life sciences, healthcare, diagnostics and medical technology. Last year TBAT Innovation experienced a 30% rise in our workload for life sciences clients; that’s not just good for us but great for the companies who now have access to the funding they need. So what might we expect in 2016? Does the Government still intend to reward you for your research and development efforts, and what impact might that have?

Talk to us If your plans for 2016 and beyond require financing, consider signing-up for one of the TBAT Innovation Funding Clinics. These free advisory sessions will identify where those funds might come from, and how to maximise what’s available. Go to www.tbat.co.uk to find out more

What’s available? Identifying the right kind of funding scheme as well as the correct amount for your research and development can be quite complex. It is also extremely time-consuming. At TBAT, we are alerted to new publicly-funded schemes on a regular basis, typically through Innovate UK and Horizon 2020. Recent suggested changes to the nature of support from Innovate UK, with a potential future emphasis on loan finance, makes taking advice even more important. Overlooked by many organisations in the UK are R&D Tax Credits. If your company employs up to 500 staff and you make a profit, for every £1 you spend on research and development activity, you can reduce your tax bill by 26p. If you make a loss, a credit of 33.3p in the £1 is payable. Although the above values have changed over time, a company can go back up to 2 years. Where too much tax has been paid, HMRC will refund this.

Fund-Finding The TBAT Innovation team of 16 senior consultants and support staff continues to grow with demand. Our experience covers a number of technologies and industry sectors including health, genetics, sensors, photonics, electronics, advanced materials, aerospace and transport. In the last 12 months the team has assisted clients in accessing over £19.9m in grant funding through UK and EU grant sources. Success rates over grant funding competitions is 86% over the last 12 months and has constantly been over 75% for the last 3 years. In addition, TBAT has assisted clients in accessing over £13m in R&D Tax Credits benefits through HMRC; our success rate for claims is 100%. We also have over 10 years’ experience of positioning, reviewing and structuring private investment deals.

It worked for us Snowden Healthcare, specialists in drug-free pain management, asked us to review all their research and development activity with a view to submitting an R&D Tax Credits claim into HMRC. The TBAT team quickly identified the qualifying R&D projects and associated spend, translating this into both a report for HMRC and a Tax Credits calculation. The application was returned to the company for submission. All monies recovered from HMRC were reinvested, and by assigning the whole task to TBAT, Snowden Healthcare could concentrate on running the business.

Author: Matt Symonds

GRANT FUNDING FOR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT TBAT Innovation has assisted its clients to access over £19.9 million in UK grant funding to support R&D projects over the last 12 months. Over this period our grant funding success rate is 86% across a range of funding schemes we have accessed on behalf of our clients.

OUR APPROACH We aim to take the hassle out of making grant applications, by driving the process, minimising impact on your time allowing you to maintain focus on your business.

Collaborative Projects Marketing and Outreach Support

CHEATA

The EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Regenerative Medicine (CIM), based at Loughborough University was established to equip the regenerative medicine industry with manufacturing tools, technologies and platforms by considering the ‘right therapy, right patient, right time’ supply chain from end to end.

CHEATA (Centre for Healthcare Equipment and Technology Adoption) is a new and unique service from the NHS created to help healthcare businesses provide better and more relevant market-ready products that can be quickly and easily adopted within the NHS.

With outreach and engagement being fundamental to the success of the project, a need arose for the provision of support for the outreach activities of the CIM for an 8 month period during 2015, following the departure of the National Centre Outreach Manager. Medilink EM were well placed to fulfil this need. A unique combination of sector specific knowledge, marketing skills and connectivity with industry, the NHS and academics ensured that critical elements of the CIM outreach activities were met.

Medilink EM has worked closely with CHEATA from the outset to support the delivery of these much needed skills and experience and bring them to the attention of our members. Trudell Medical International Ltd, a leading manufacturer and distributor of respiratory medical devices, was looking to introduce a new technology to the UK market. Through an introduction from Medilink EM, CHEATA undertook a product evaluation. The results of the product evaluation enabled Trudell to identify the criteria required for approval under the NICE Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme (MTEP).

A team was formed between CIM staff and the Medilink EM marketing and events staff to ensure that the CIM website and all social media platforms were kept current with the latest news and developments and the regular CIM newsletter continued. Medilink EM also worked with CIM to manage the applications and judging for a fully funded place on the prestigious 2015 Summer Internship Programme at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, USA. The internship bursary was awarded to Arianna Rech, a chemical engineering undergraduate student from Loughborough University. Once again, close collaboration between staff of Medilink EM and the CIM saw the successful management of a prominent UK-wide competition.

“The handling of the promotional activity for the CIM by Medilink during 2015 was both smooth and effective. The support enabled the researchers to continue to concentrate on their work secure in the knowledge that the public-facing communication was being handled in a timely and professional manner...”

D2N2 Growth Hub Medilink EM is collaborating on a project with the D2N2 Growth Hub to deliver specialist business support for life science businesses in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. One of the primary aims of the Growth Hub is to offer simplified access to business support, ensuring that SMEs are aware of, and engage with, the full range of support products and services available. Since the start of this project, Medilink EM advisers have sought to develop a close working relationship with the Growth Hub team. The cultivation of this partnership is essential for ensuring SMEs can access the necessary support and receive specific solutions to their business needs in an efficient manner. The specialised business support provided by Medilink EM will be delivered alongside the generic support offered by the Growth Hub.

R&D Leads In recent years, R&D leads for each NHS Trust have been established, and the leads from the East Midlands saw an opportunity to link up and exchange best practice and expertise in an informal gathering. With support from Medilink EM, monthly forum meetings have been established to provide a useful opportunity for the R&D leads to meet and exchange information on the latest developments and opportunities for collaboration. Having Medilink EM present and involved in these meetings as a trusted and impartial partner representing industry is also a means of keeping the NHS aware of activities, events and opportunities for collaboration with SMEs. The meetings provide the NHS with an industry perspective and act as an additional connection for wider life sciences sector and NHS engagement. The result is a further strengthening of the NHS and SME research landscape across the East Midlands.

Life Sciences Sectoral and Skills Advisory Group The life sciences sector is of significant strategic importance to the counties of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, which are covered by the D2N2 local enterprise partnership. 2014 saw an extensive consultation exercise with stakeholders and the creation of a development strategy and action plan running up to 2023 for the D2N2 life sciences sector. Development of this plan was undertaken by Medilink EM in conjunction with Kate Beresford Associates. To oversee the implementation of the sector strategy Medilink EM is facilitating the D2N2 Life Sciences Working Group on behalf of D2N2. This group provides continued underpinning support, on-going advice, information and feedback on the effectiveness and implementation of the strategy, as well as a forum where the sector stakeholders can look to reach consensus on vision and strategy for future opportunities. The group also provides a forum for review and input into the sector skills agenda, ensuring that business support and skills needs are considered in an integrated process.

Annual Report 2015

Making Headlines Contract Research Organisations go from strength to strength Quotient Clinical, the Translational Pharmaceutics® Company, has announced the successful completion of an Enabled-First-in-Human® programme for US biotech company Corcept Therapeutics Incorporated. The clinical timeline took just seven months for completion of the programme, and CORT125134 was proven to be safe and well tolerated at the doses tested, with a demonstrated pharmacological effect. The drug is now progressing into the next stages of development. XenoGesis and a group of UK-based CROs went on a market visit to Denmark on 25th March 2015, supported by UKTI and hosted at the residence of the British Ambassador in Copenhagen. The visit provided an opportunity for life science research companies across the Nordik region to meet and discuss how collaborative outsourcing can overcome key scientific challenges within R&D. Almac Group, one of Northern Ireland’s leading drug manufacturers, has launched a £16 million expansion into England. The firm will operate a significant proportion of the 70-acre Charnwood Campus in Loughborough and will establish development and testing facilities at the site. The Campus is a science, innovation and enterprise park offering offices, lab and manufacturing space. It is anticipated that approximately 180 new jobs will be created over the next five years, adding to Almac’s global workforce of more than 4,000. The company also recently announced the multi-million pound acquisition of Arran Chemicals in the Republic of Ireland.

Success from the start Recognising success is always a great moment, but it is particularly impressive when the achievements come from start-ups and small companies, who have succeeded from the beginning. Histologix Ltd and its partners have recently been awarded in excess of €1.5million to develop a new therapeutic antibody for the prevention of heart failure after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Although AMI treatment has improved significantly, between 25-60% of patients who survive AMI go on to suffer from heart failure. After being reduced to tears while trying on bras in a high street changing room, breast cancer survivor Susan Pringle decided to take the lingerie industry into her own hands. Forming her own company, Millie Lingerie after launching a Kickstarter campaign and successfully raising £5,600 to start developing a new range of lingerie specifically designed for women to wear after breast cancer treatment. EquiSports Performance have won an Innovation award in the Rider category at BETA 2015. The Performance Posture products were initially designed as bespoke products for Olympic and International Show Jumper, Billy Twomey, after he had spinal surgery and then a spinal fracture, and the company has now launched the products for general use. St. Mary’s Hospital A&E department has recently installed a customised queuing system developed by Call Aid UK. With concerns about the increasing levels of violence against staff witnessed across the NHS, Call Aid UK improved the arrival experience of patients by designing and building a robust steel pedestal that would house a ticket printer, electronics and a ticket on demand button. The queuing system includes clear, visual LCD displays as well as automatic audio announcements.

Diseases and Infections Medilink EM members have been contributing to breakthroughs in scientific research and providing treatment to sufferers of infection and disease across the globe. Spirit Healthcare, of Oadby, is launching products to help battle long term conditions including diabetes in the US and Canada, and expanding its product range in Australia.

Chief Executive Chris Barker said: “Australia, the US and Canada have increasing problems with managing diabetes effectively”. With our experience, products and knowledge we are perfectly placed to launch into this sizeable market.” Spirit Healthcare continues to be recognised in prestigious industry awards for its innovative cloud-based healthcare platform CliniTouch and is in the first phase of a major national pilot initiative to implement this proven technology at scale across the healthcare system. Retrogenix LTD has been working with researchers at the University of Copenhagen, Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, the University of Oxford and NIMR Tanzania to identify how malaria parasites growing inside red blood cells stick to the sides of blood vessels in severe cases of malaria. Researchers generated a full-length PfEMP1 protein in the laboratory and utilised a new technology developed by Retrogenix LTD to examine which of over 2,500 human proteins this PfEMP1 protein could bind to. The discovery may advance the development of vaccines or drugs to combat severe malaria.

Advancements in Additive Manufacturing and 3D printing

Achievements from the wider East Midlands areas of Lincolnshire & Northamptonshire

UK-led advances in 3D printing could one day lead to techniques used to produce entire electronic devices in one shot. Researchers from the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Additive Manufacturing, based at Nottingham University, are leading in the field of multifunctional 3D printing and working towards fundamental breakthroughs that could help realise industry predictions that have been made for 3D printing.

Innovation in the wider East Midlands is leading to new solutions, better products and more effective treatment. Babylight, based in Lincolnshire, have an intuitive light-emitting covering that will safely bathe a baby’s body in light to break down bilirubin, to treat jaundice or prevent brain damage in babies. No radiant heat is produced and eye protection is not required. The disposable blanket keeps the baby covered in a wraparound material allowing the baby to be continuously treated in hospital, at home, in the mother’s arms and on the move.

Whilst existing systems typically use just one material, the idea is that multifunctional printers will produce fully functional electronic and sensor components from multiple materials including both metals and plastics. The group has already made significant progress, and these techniques could develop to enable manufacturers to print entire electronic devices in one go. The centre’s main focus is on printed electronics, but it is also undertaking work for the pharmaceuticals industry for 3D printing of drugs.

To help stimulate innovation, the £8.5million University of Northampton Innovation Centre has opened in the Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone. With a full range of integrated business support services provided by the Northamptonshire Growth Hub and the university, 42 flexible office units, a café and conference space, the centre is home to social enterprises in a supportive environment alongside likeminded businesses.

Conferences Medilink EM delivered and hosted a leading 2-day national Med-Tech conference, on behalf of Medilink UK and in partnership with Med-Tech Innovation (MTI) in April 2015. In its third successive year, held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry in April, The UK Med-Tech Innovation Conference was embedded in the MTI EXPO - the leading annual exhibition platform for raising the profile of companies in the Med-Tech sector. Aimed at key company leaders and decision makers, the conference covered critical issues relating to the strategic direction of the Med-Tech sector and important topics affecting the operational activities of companies.

Ruth Goodridge, Assistant Professor in Additive Manufacturing & 3D printing said: “It was fantastic to see so many people at the first Additive Manufacturing & 3D-Printing SIG. These technologies could have a transformative effect in healthcare; however, a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders is needed to realise this.”

Medilink EM’s annual Innovation Day also continues to be a firm favourite in our events calendar.

Looking forward Medilink EM’s programme is continually expanding to respond to the needs of the life sciences community. Additional attention has been placed on creating NHS clinician and researcher groups, particularly Clinical Evaluation Groups where industry, clinicians and academics will collaborate closely to provide innovative healthcare solutions. The digital healthcare economy is an area of growing relevance, and plans are in place to start a Digital Health SIG in 2016. Medilink EM has also identified and developed a series of MPD (Medilink Professional Development) courses that are relevant to growing businesses. These courses will continue to be expanded covering legal, regulatory and market access issues in greater depth and scope.

Business Awards The Lucky 7 On Wednesday 10th June 2015, the East Midlands life science community gathered at the annual Medilink EM awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of companies from across the region. In addition to the traditional awards, this year we added a skills development certificate. The lucky 7 winners were:

Start-Up Award Ayva Pharma Ltd, Derbyshire

Collaboration with the NHS Award Wellbeing Software Group, Nottinghamshire

Ayva Pharma specialises in supplying hospital partners across the Middle East, North Africa and the Caribbean, supporting their partners with high quality commercial medicinal products for use in clinical trials. Sally Gibbons, Business Development Director of Ayva Pharma, said:

Wellbeing Software is a group of healthcare IT companies working collaboratively with the NHS to improve efficiency, service delivery and patient safety, via the introduction of specialist technology and innovation. Chris Yeowart, Director of Wellbeing Software Group said: “Our collaboration with the NHS includes working with clinicians to develop real IT solutions to address real problems. The outcome is fit-for-purpose innovation, which is proven in the NHS. Working in partnership with the NHS is a key element in the success of businesses operating in the UK’s healthcare and bioscience sector, so we are delighted to have won this prestigious award in recognition of our on-going work with the NHS.”

“Our fair pricing strategy in these markets has helped build a loyal customer base and allowed us to generate stable repeat orders, ultimately providing a platform for us to introduce new products. This commercial approach means our business has grown extensively in our first year of trading. This award is testament to the hard work of our whole team in the UK and overseas.”

Export Achievement Award Hospital Aids, Northamptonshire Hospital Aids is a manufacturer and supplier of evacuation equipment to hospitals, care homes, schools, and other public or private buildings for use in the event of a fire or similar emergency. Steve Clark, Director, Hospital Aids said: “Our export sales have more than doubled over the last financial year, both in existing market growth and in new market development. We have worked very closely with UKTI to identify new opportunities and have had substantial orders from Saudi, Qatar, Singapore and Czech Republic this year. We are delighted with our achievements being recognised with winning this award, and it is a credit to the efforts of the whole team here at Hospital Aids.”

Highly commended for Investment in Skills Development XCAM Ltd, Northamptonshire XCAM develops challenging and innovative camera systems for science experiments, having developed the camera system that took the world’s first diffraction image of the mimivirus with the world’s first soft x-ray laser. Outstanding Achievement Award Third Sector Winner

The Ear Foundation, Nottinghamshire The Ear Foundation is a charity providing services which ensure that all children and adults with hearing loss can hear and communicate using the latest hearing aids and implants. Our Members Medilink EM strives to help members become more innovative, competitive and profitable. Here are some examples of how we have assisted in taking their businesses to the next level. Advanced Expert Systems Ltd was originally founded in 1989 to bring the benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems and solutions to real world challenges. Now known as AES Group Ltd, they have become a leading provider of critical defence and healthcare information systems and solutions.

A key challenge for AES Group Ltd was finding high calibre specialists and practitioners in AI, knowledge engineering, software architecture and development, big data and data analytics. Medilink EM provided valuable support through market intelligence and the Innovation, Advice and Guidance (IAG) grant, which led to the creation of a number of new jobs. The business was also able to improve their software development capability, reduce the time to commercialisation for new products, reduce the risk of project failure, and raise the profile of the company and the HaemoSys® V2 project, which has been highly successful with 11 implementations and further progress being made with NHS Trusts.

consult2deliver limited provide clinical and regulatory advice for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical concepts and products, through all stages of development and launch. Initially GBPK consulting limited specialised in pharmacokinetics and early clinical studies. In Nov 2013 the company rebranded to consult2deliver limited offering new services and advice including regulatory strategy in foods and medicines. Medilink EM gave this new company the opportunity to have a soapbox session at Innovation Day in 2014. This then led to consult2deliver being given the opportunity to run a new Special Interest Group (SIG) on Food Supplements within the East Midlands region, allowing them to engage with leading institutions with a defined purpose and vision. Co-promotion of a new SIG focussing on food supplements gave the opportunity to seek out new contacts within the network. This framework of support gave additional credibility to consult2deliver’s marketing and promotional activities.

The Design for Health and Wellbeing Research group (DHW) at Nottingham Trent University aims to build

collaborative partnerships for developing research to address the changing needs of medical research and society. Through their membership, the research group has received practical advice and support, excellent networking opportunities and the chance to have research promoted widely. Support from Medilink EM has been pivotal in the DHW identifying the right partners for their projects and they have engaged with a wide variety of professions linked to the healthcare industry, including healthcare practitioners, researchers and academics, SMEs, health economists, guest lecturers and specialist speakers. The collaboration between DHW and Medilink EM led to the Biomaterials in Healthcare SIG events in the East Midlands, connecting expertise from across the UK and Europe. The group is in the process of planning further healthcare-related events, and see Medilink EM’s expertise and network reach as essential to the overall project management and promotion of the events.

Locate Therapeutics is a regenerative medicine product development company that has developed TAOS™ (Tailored Orchestrated Signalling matrix); a patented polymer technology with multiple medical applications. Through their membership, they have extended reach and visibility, leading to new partnerships with academic groups and supply chain, distribution and marketing contacts.

They have benefitted from several initiatives run by Medilink EM; an Innovation, Advice & Guidance (IAG) grant led to the purchase of specialised analytical equipment to assist development work, an Innovation Voucher enabled them to commission bespoke market research on a new technology and a number of training subsidies through the Science Industry Partnership Skills for Training programmes have assisted the company’s development. Whilst currently working towards getting their lead product to patients, they hope to extend the concept into other areas of clinical unmet need in the future. With a growing pipeline of innovative early-stage technologies that they wish to advance, forming the right strategic alliances is crucial and they believe Medilink EM is ideally positioned to help facilitate those connections.
