Annual Report 2018/19

GROWING THE MIDLANDS MEDILINK MIDLANDS Medilink Midlands was formed in October 2017 as a collaborative partnership between Medilink East and West Midlands and both organisations work together on life science initiatives and programmes which affect the entire Midlands area. It has been created to fully utilise the specialist knowledge, skills and expertise that exists in both organisations, to maximise the opportunities for the Midlands Life Science Industry.

Medilink Midlands activity so far The Medical Technologies Innovation Accelerator (MTIA) MTIA is a proposal to create the UK’s leading cluster for the development and manufacture of Medical Technologies. MTIA will help to create a regional UK hub of excellence and position the Midlands as a global leader. Medilink Midlands has been supporting the development of this initiative as it seeks Government support.

DRIVING LIFE SCIENCES Medilink Midlands was commissioned by a group of Midlands Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) working with the Department for International Trade (DIT), to develop the life sciences inward investment offer for the Midlands Engine area. The first step was to create a brochure and resource database to profile the Midlands as a destination for life science investment. Building on this work, Medilink Midlands is supporting the LEPs and regional organisations to promote the Midlands Engine Life Sciences offer and secure Foreign Direct Investment leads. A copy of the report is available on the Midlands Engine website: www.midlandsengine.org/library

16

By bringing together the expertise in network and cluster development within the two sub-regional organisations, it aims to stimulate life science sector growth across the Midlands. Grant Thornton UK LLP, one of the world’s leading organisations of independent advisory, tax and audit firms, are the founding Strategic Partners of Medilink Midlands.

CoDex4SMEs CoDex4SMEs is a three-year, €3.16million project, part-funded by Interreg North-West (NW) Europe to encourage greater co-operation in the development of companion diagnostics. Medilink Midlands has a subpartner role supporting the University of Leicester. Companion diagnostics are medical technologies which are used to determine the correct therapy based on each patient’s biological circumstances. CoDex4SMEs will create a support network across NW Europe to help life science businesses adopt Companion Diagnostics.

Forging links with the USA Medilink Midlands signed a MOU with The City of Mentor, in Northeast Ohio. Mentor hosted a delegation of Midlands Life Science businesses in October, along with Medilink Midlands Director Keith Widdowson, to promote trade and investment between the Midlands and the USA. Northeast Ohio is a growing centre of innovation in MedTech and Bioscience and wants to encourage international collaboration with businesses and healthcare providers. Both Mentor and Medilink Midlands identified opportunities for collaboration and an offer was also arranged by Mentor to attend an International Trade Conference, including attending the Cleveland Clinic 2018 Medical Innovation Summit. A Mentor delegation also visited the Midlands in May 2019, meeting with Life Science businesses in Nottingham and presenting at the Med-Tech Innovation Expo in Birmingham.

Annual Report 2018/19

Charnwood Campus Medilink EM continues to work closely with Charnwood Campus, which specialises in life sciences. Charnwood Campus has been selected as the first UK Life Science Opportunities Zone (LSOZ), receiving ministerial endorsement in June 2018 by Lord Henley, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. During his visit to Charnwood, Lord Henley met with Medilink Midlands Director Darren Clark and Medilink EM Board Members Professor Mike Hannay and Dr Nik Kotecha as part of a life sciences roundtable meeting discussing how life sciences can continue to contribute to the Midlands economy.

The Office for Life Sciences’ Strength and Opportunity report This report gives an annual picture of the size and shape of life sciences in the UK. Medilink East Midlands is one of the original data partners who provide some of the key statistics behind the report. The report highlights the Midlands as a key MedTech region with more employees than anywhere

else outside the South East and that the East Midlands has the most service and supply company sites in the UK. Analysis of the data also shows that the East Midlands is a powerhouse for biopharma service and supply chain, and that there have been more new companies formed in the Midlands than anywhere else outside the South East.

Medical Technologies Innovation Facility (MTIF) Medilink EM is one of the strategic partners helping to create a Medical Technologies Innovation Facility (MTIF). MTIF will be based at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus and the Boots Enterprise Zone and will enable industry and academia to develop medical devices. When complete, MTIF will support industry and enhance the economic contribution of life sciences in the area.

LLEP Industrial Strategy The Leicester and Leicestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) produced a Local Industrial Strategy Prospectus document in July after consulting with over 150 businesses including Medilink EM and many of its members. The prospectus was used to inform Government of the area’s strengths and aspirations, which resulted in LLEP being included in the second wave of LEPs invited to develop their local plans.

MEDILINK UK

Lifescience Industry Magazine Lifescience Industry Magazine is the most widely distributed life science publication in the UK. Distributed to 40,000 individuals, it is a collaboration between regional, national and international life science partners, including Medilink East Midlands. It includes the latest news and developments from the life science industry, with editorial covering health technology, funding, trade and collaboration opportunities.

Life Science Industry Accredited Credentialing Register The Life Science Industry (LSI) register is the first of its kind and sets national standards for professionals working in the life sciences industry, providing reassurance to the NHS. Medilink UK is one of eight national industry associations working with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) to develop the UK’s first fully accredited register for life science industry staff who interact with NHS front-line staff and patients. This is the only register that is PSA accredited and already has over 1000 individuals going through the registration process. From July 2019, the University Hospitals of Birmingham will be the first trust to formally begin using the register as their primary method of accreditation. 17

Project Case Studies Capatex

INSTILS

Capatex supplies technical textiles into a varied marketplace including industrial, agricultural, horticultural and healthcare. It was looking to expand its healthcare portfolio of products to include disposable incontinence products. The new product was designed to be thinner, lighter and more absorbent than its competition and includes wetness indicator technology. Capatex needed to design the product and packaging, develop a prototype, and ensure that it adhered to the correct medical device regulations. The company first met with an INSTILS adviser, who found where help was most needed. It was identified that a lack of resources was the largest obstacle to the project’s completion. Through INSTILS, Capatex received a £20,000 innovation grant to help accelerate the project and take on more staff to manage the increased workload. If support was not available, product development would have taken place on a much longer timescale, with an expected completion time of 18-24 months. “We found INSTILS support in completing the paperwork, as well as Medilink EM’s knowledge of the sector and industry contacts to be an invaluable help. Our business is truly in a better place because of INSTILS.” Gabriel Strauss, Capatex, Managing Director.

Alert-IT

SoLSTICE

ITS Designs is one of the UK’s leading innovators and manufacturers of care alarm systems. The company created the Alert-iT radio system and pager, which is a proven, failsafe alarm system for protecting the handicapped and vulnerable. Alert-iT Care Alarms wanted to evolve their current technology to include low power Bluetooth and connectivity to hospital nurse call – and looked to Medilink EM for help. To accelerate the project’s development, innovation advisers worked with ITS Designs and looked at where support could be offered. It was found that limited resources was the largest obstacle for the business and that ITS Designs could be eligible for SoLSTICE support. Project advisers assisted ITS Designs throughout the application process and the company received £7,170 SoLSTICE funding. This has helped ITS Designs to get its improved technology closer to market far quicker than would have otherwise been possible. “Medilink EM came to our office and helped us with the details of the application process for SoLSTICE. They have been involved through every step of the process to secure funding and answer any questions we have had as the project runs through to completion”. Rick Gunn, Operations Director, ITS Designs.

Canonbury Healthcare

ACTIS

Canonbury Healthcare provides specialist footcare products and wanted to centralise its data to improve customer experience, particularly in countries which struggle to access information digitally. However, Canonbury was unsure how to approach this and looked to Medilink EM for help. Innovation advisers worked with Canonbury and found that although the company has an extensive product range, it is not always clear which is the best treatment and there is potential for error. To present the most accurate information possible, Canonbury needed to streamline its data and make its website universally accessible. It was also identified that Canonbury could not deliver the project within the desired timeframe. Innovation advisers worked with Canonbury to explore available options to solve this problem, including ACTIS support. Through ACTIS, Canonbury identified a specialist web developer and worked with them to improve their website so that it could be accessed universally and regardless of device - completed in Autumn 2018. Work has now begun on centralising Canonbury’s data to present the most accurate picture to its customer base. This is expected to be complete by January 2020. “At Canonbury we were looking to improve the speed, accuracy and access to our platform. The support and advice provided via the ACTIS programme has been an invaluable aid in helping us to develop our new and improved system.” Hans Bakker, Founder, Canonbury Healthcare.

TigTag

LARIS

TigTag is a Lincoln-based technology company. Their first product is a wearable device, providing an alarm for high-risk groups - including people who are cognitively impaired, frail and at risk of falls. TigTag had to finalise prototypes, manufacture the first 100 units, secure their IP and enter the market - but was unsure how to proceed. TigTag approached Medilink EM and advisers worked to understand their situation. It was found that the company had limited market access and it was also highlighted that they could apply for LARIS support. Advisers helped TigTag throughout the application and introduced them to Accelerate Associates, a Life Sciences marketing company, to help TigTag expand its market knowledge and establish entry points. This, in addition to a £10,000 LARIS grant funded by the EMAHSN - has helped to finalise prototypes and secure their IP. “Through LARIS, we’ve been able to take proactive steps towards developing our product. We are currently collaborating with Accelerate Associates to find out what the market needs from us and we will use this information to develop our product further.” Michael Jacob, Managing Director, TigTag Solutions. “Companies like TigTag are a prime example of what we’re trying to achieve through LARIS. The support provided is helping companies in Lincolnshire and Rutland to bring their ideas to life.” Mike Hannay, Managing Director, EMAHSN.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT



Medilink EM aims to help members raise their profile and bring like-minded organisations together to share their common interest and passion for the life sciences sector. Read about how these members have benefitted from the opportunities available via membership. THE UNIVERSITY OF DERBY

Uvamed Uvamed is the creator of Rainbow Trays, which are tamper-evident, ISO 26825 colour-coded trays for anaesthetic drugs designed to reduce medication error. As a Medilink EM Member, Uvamed was able to take advantage of the growing relationship between Medilink Midlands and the City of Mentor, USA. Uvamed went on its first ever transatlantic trade mission in October 2018, which would not have been possible without Medilink EM. Northeast Ohio is a rapidly growing centre of innovation in Healthcare, MedTech and Bioscience. They are looking to encourage collaboration with companies and healthcare providers in their area on an international basis and the City of Mentor offered Medilink EM and Uvamed the opportunity to visit the Cleveland Clinic 2018 Medical Innovation Summit. The City of Mentor is part of a cluster of over 700 Life Science companies. Many of the Life Science companies in Northeast Ohio have grown up around the Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s leading hospitals for research, education and health information. Going forward, as Uvamed continues to grow and develop, the company anticipates that Medilink EM will continue to be an essential part of its development.

26

The University of Derby is a modern university focused on delivering excellence across the region. Its leading-edge research in life sciences, healthcare, advanced manufacturing and data sciences delivers real impact for the university and its partner organisations. The University of Derby was looking to engage further with life science companies in the East Midlands and looked to Medilink EM, as the focal point of life science business support in the region, for assistance. Upon joining Medilink EM as a Patron organisation, the University of Derby capitalised on the opportunities now open to it and shared its ambition of connecting with life science companies in the East Midlands to a greater extent, with Medilink EM. Medilink EM was able to set up and manage a business event, hosted at the University of Derby’s Enterprise Centre (pictured) in May 2019 and drew on its extensive network to bridge the gap between academia and industry, connecting the university with life science companies to a far greater extent than it would have been able to do alone.

One area in which Plastek wanted assistance and clarification was CE marking. Medilink EM was able to help the company by making introductions between Plastek and specialist consultants in the Medilink EM member network.

Plastek UK Plastek are a leading provider of plastic packaging to the consumer, personal care, infant nutrition, food and healthcare markets. The company was interested in learning more about the medical industry and saw Medilink EM membership as a way of achieving this.

In addition, they were advised of relevant industry training events such as the Medilink EM course on the Medical Device Regulation. This served to further increase their understanding of the sector and has helped Plastek to tailor their products and services and enter the healthcare market with products that meet their customer’s needs and adhere to the proper regulations.
