Director Sonam Masih introduces Daljeeta Juttla in her upcoming movie

Empire takes an exclusive inside look at Outsider as it creeps its way into cinemas.

HE STORY IS SIMPLE; GIRL IS BULLIED AND IS AN OUTCAST AT SCHOOL. She is tragically raped by drunk boys and then a kindhearted boy takes her in to find her in a mental rage. “It is something new to the British Film Industry.” says Masih, talking exclusively to Empire. “There is too much realism in British movies, I want to push the boundaries.” Although it is pushing the “boundaries”, it still has many competitors over in the U.S. The director of Outsider have cast newcomer Daljeeta Juttla as the leading lady. In this twisted tale, Juttla‟s character—Anita— the geek is tormented everywhere she goes, after all she endures at school and outside of school she finally cracks and unleashes all of her inner rage. “We‟ve used the simple character of a geek on the outside to gradually “THERE IS TOO MUCH REALISM IN reveal the madness on the inside. Anita transforms from the painfully shy girl to fierce, de- BRITISH MOVIES, I WANT TO PUSH monic and fearless.” BOUNDARIES.” Sonam Masih, director The „good guy‟ who takes in Anita, Mohammed Rahman—aka Ray, is left in a state of shock from the sudden change in her behaviour. The rest of the cast includes Vishal Rai, Sonu Chhetri, Kashif Akhtar, and Nic. With a cast like that we would be expecting the acting to be better than the American competitor Twilight. Kashif Akhtar is the main bully who continuously makes Anita‟s school life a misery. “I love my character! She‟s different from your typical school geek. Although this is my first film I feel that this will be the most memorable.” says newcomer, Juttla. As for the rest of the cast who‟ve had experience with movies still feel that this movie will be one to remember. 30 EMPIRE SEPTEMBER 2011

We asked the only sympathetic male in the cast about his feelings on his role, “Ray‟s role is something quite unexpected, the other men in the movie oppress the female; Ray challenges that by helping Anita. That‟s basically why I took the role.”, says Mohammed Rahman. The victim victimises the rapists—she does some crazy shit!” The new film also gave Masih the chance to create an entirely original world around the basic story, and in keeping with the themes. “Although the film would be classed as your typical rape revenge horror there is a moral to the story; what goes around comes around.”, laughs Masih. We went behind the scenes to see how the other cast members felt about their role. “It‟s definitely something that I‟ve never done before. Usually I play the „nice guy‟, I wanted to have the experience of being „evil‟.” says Vishal Rai. This is a first for all the cast with horror and we hope to be seeing more of it! This movie had plenty of special effects but that still couldn’t help the acting! Even though it was popular the critics were right— it didn't do the novel justice. Ouch!

I Spit On Your Grave (2010) Although it wasn’t a blockbuster hit it was definitely better than the original. The only problem was that the murder was too ’raw’. Let just say it was a bit too ...Yuck!

Carrie (1976) The movie was well known classic. The change in the character was one of the most dramatic but today’s generation would find this to be more comical than scary. Although there are little effects used the close ups still scare people.

The Last House On The Left (2009) This re-make was not as good as anticipated. The story carried on for too long, I think the directors forgot about it actually being a horror. Wow. empireonline.com
