the holidays sneak up on us - as they so often do, sweltered by Florida’s heat and humidity - it can be challenging to feel prepared for the When season. But with Hanukkah arriving early this year, our gift lists cannot be ignored. As we compiled this year’s Holiday Issue, we’re reminded of the old age phrase, “it’s better to give than receive.” Getting wrapped up in the holiday spirit, local volunteers yarn-bombed trees near FAT Village, captured by photographer Kara Starzyk. And while we don’t have snow here, the Panthers hockey team shared the ice to celebrate the holiday of lights, taken by photographer Gina Fontana on page 16. Additional ways to do so can be accomplished by attending local holiday events presented in our calendar and featured stories. Another way to give back while shopping this season is to pick up toys for underprivileged children in Broward; page 25 features a listing of local toy drives. Because of your selﬂess acts, we’re reminded daily that all we want for the holidays is world peace (well, that and a new pair of boots wouldn’t hurt). While wrapping up the production of the issue, photographer James Argyropoulos captured us entangled in our own festivities. When this issue went to press, we were basking in our post-turkey haze, freshly full of gratitude and what’s really important in life. This is why we’d like to take a moment to thank you - our readers - for being loyal followers and for giving so much back to the community we call home. or nearly 17 years, I’ve served as the CEO for LifeNet4Families, formerly The Cooperative Feeding Program Inc. I spent my days working with people in need, learning their stories, and seeing first-hand how poverty and hunger destroys the lives of children, seniors and all the ages in between. You can’t simply hand someone a box of food. You have to understand why they are there. Only then can we work together, with the help of an informed community, to right that wrong. So I’d like to take this opportunity to share the stories of some of our neighbors who have been helped by the generosity of our community in their greatest time of need Marti Forman and put a face to the issues of hunger, poverty, homelessness, etc. Sen was let go from her job after five years of consistent employment. Her boss said that random background checks had found an infraction ten years ago in her past and for that he had to discharge her. Sen lost her apartment and used money from her daughter’s disability check to pay for nights on friends’ couches to keep her family from ending up in a shelter or on the street. Someone directed Sen to LifeNet4Families. When she arrived, she was despondent. Life had beaten her up so badly she had almost given up her fight. Here, we helped her prep for employment. We helped her locate employers who were hiring and we helped her dress for success. In collaboration with several other partnering charities, we helped her get shoes, a uniform and bus passes. After only three interviews, Sen was hired as a private duty home health care worker for a nice family. Her housing fell into place about the same time. We continue to look in on Sen and her children. We’ve registered them for holiday gifts and they now come here for our weekly fresh produce day and for their monthly food box. Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, a McCormick Foundation fund, helped pay her move in costs to start her new life. With the assistance of the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, LifeNet4Families helped Dee pay her rent when she found herself short of funds. Dee is a woman to be admired. She took her sister’s two children in and raised them as her own. Since her sister gave birth to a baby who tested positive for drugs 15 years ago, from that moment on, she has been the only mother her sister’s children have known. Once the boys were 15 and 18 years old, Dee decided to go back to school. With the help of student loans, Dee took classes to become a nurse. She liked the feeling of helping others. Unfortunately, not all the student loans came in as planned and Dee had to use her rent to cover the difference. That unexpected expenditure made it impossible to get her rent paid, so she arrived at LifeNet seeking support. Because of our partnership with the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, we had the resources to assist Dee with her rent. We helped set her children up for holiday toys and clothing, and registered her for ongoing help with food and fresh produce. Dee saved the lives of a sick new born and his threeyear-old brother 15 years ago. It was good to be able to do something for her in her time of need. In the spirit of the holidays, I hope that by sharing these stories I can inspire others to give – of their time volunteering, money, talents, or simply by taking the time to read stories like this to learn more about the issues prevalent in our community and show how giving can truly change someone’s path in life.

fell in love with HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth) almost 20 years ago when one of my Guardian ad Litem families needed more than just

representation in court. They needed food, clothing, Christmas presents and tutoring/mentoring for their middle school children. I turned to HANDY, and their wonderful support staff got involved, which resulted in the family having a wonderful Christmas. The case managers helped get the family stabilized and back on their feet. Since then, I have proudly served on the board of the organization and HANDY’s remarkable staff and board has helped thousands of families regain stability. The greatest gift one can give is giving of oneself in order to help change the lives of others. When I think of the holidays I think of my family, friends, my Guardian ad Litem children and my HANDY youth. I also think of my parents who gave so much of

My holiday mood was set when I joined the volunteers and HANDY staff to honor 300 youth and their caregivers at Holiday Park for the HANDY “Family Thanksgiving.”

I was fil ed with pride as I experienced the metamorphosis of our children into self confident, strong, and well-educated youth. Through the tireless devotion of our staff, the transformation has been possible. The youth will be able to achieve their dreams and be the future leaders of tomorrow. My favorite thing about the holiday season in South Florida is being with our grandchildren, Hannah and Benjamin (twins). This holiday season I’m obsessed with shopping for the children - my Guardian ad Litem children, HANDY kids, JAFCO, etc.

The cause I care most about is children’s welfare, education and the opportunity to succeed in life. It warms my heart because all children are our future.

‘Christmas Near the Beach:’ A South Florida-style celebration

t’s the seventh annual “Christmas Near the Beach,” and that means it’s a celebration of season, South Florida style. From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, St. Nick will be in town, making an appearance at ArtsPark at Young Circle at Hollywood Boulevard and U.S. 1 in downtown Hollywood. This free variety show will include a Christmas ballet, hip-hop dancers, “Grinchy” and bands playing music from bluegrass to gospel - plus excerpts from “The Nutcracker” and more. This year’s five-hour variety show will feature local

artists from Vero Beach to Miami Beach. Children can take advantage of a free photo opportunity with St. Nick at his “Beach House,” and they will be posted on the event’s web site. This year, a tree will be available to a lucky winner in a drawing. Select vendors will also be on site providing food and refreshments. The public is invited to come out early to this family-friendly experience, as last year nearly 3,000 people celebrated “Christmas Near the Beach” in ArtsPark - a 10-acre outdoor facility convenient for families to gather with lawn chairs and

n the early days of Davie, Santa would arrive in different ways each year and pass out goodies to all the children of the community, and everyone would sing carols and have a good time. It was a true community gathering. The Davie School, built in 1918, was the epicenter of town activity in those days, and today the town’s tradition of celebration continues for children and their families at the Old Davie School Historical Museum, 6650 Griffin Road site of the 12th annual “Old Davie Christmas” presented by the Davie Historical Society Committee and the Davie School Foundation.

The community is invited to join in the festivities, welcoming Santa and Mrs. Claus as they arrive by antique car at the Old Davie School on Sunday, Dec. 8 at noon. Each child will receive a free goodie bag that includes tickets for a pony ride, a hayride and a light lunch, while supplies last. There will be games, a petting zoo and surprises. This special holiday celebration is sponsored by local citizens and businesses, and is intended for children ages 3 to 8 years of age. Admission to the museum is free for this special event, and it’s a great opportunity to educate future generations about the history of the Davie community and western

Broward County. The Davie Historical Society Committee, the Board of Trustees of the Davie School Foundation and the staff encourage families to join for the festive event. The Old Davie School Historical Museum is at 6650 Griffin Road, east of University Drive in Davie. The Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund gives back with matched gifts via Holiday Campaign

he season of giving has officially kicked off, and there’s no gift that goes further and stays closer than a donation to the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund’s annual Holiday Campaign. The campaign, running through December 31, raises much-needed funds to support local nonprofit programs throughout the year. These programs provide an array of services that help move low-income children and families into self-sufficiency.

In 1990, the Sun Sentinel expanded its long-term support of helping those in need in Broward and Palm Beach counties and partnered with the Robert R. McCormick Foundation to establish the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, a McCormick Foundation Fund. This partnership enables donations to the Fund to go even further because the McCormick Foundation matches all donations at fifty cents on the dollar. In addition, the Sun Sentinel and the Foundation pay

all administrative and campaign expenses, so 100 percent of every gift, plus the match, go directly to support local children and families in need. The Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund is committed to helping those less fortunate in our community improve their lives and break the cycle of poverty. With the generous support of donors and matching funds provided by the McCormick Foundation, grants are made to qualified nonprofit organizations with programs

that concentrate on child abuse prevention and treatment; child and youth education; housing; and hunger. Since inception, more than $42 million has been granted through the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, making a positive impact in the lives of thousands of disadvantaged children, families and adults every year.
