Teens can earn community service hours at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center. NSU operates the Broward County Sea Turtle Renesting Program. You can help simply by not walking on the beach at night from April through August, and by not shining bright lights onto the beach. If you see an injured or sick sea turtle or hatchlings, please call (954) 328-0580. If you are interested in scheduling a presentation for your organization, please email seaturtles@nova.edu.

Imagine being able to take your child to get hearing and balance, vision, speech-language, and dental health assessments all in one day… for FREE. Oh, and your “waiting rooms” include a bounce house, storybook character meet-and-greets, food, music, and more. Become an NSU ambassador by spreading the word about our two annual FREE health fairs – “A Day of Children” in late September and the “FOMA-NSU Health Fair” held mid-April of each year. ho says volunteering is tough? Not only does lending your time to a good cause help people, it can be a lot of fun too. That is exactly what we encountered on Sept. 11 – National Day of Service and Remembrance – as we headed over to Broward Partnership and saw the team from DHL hard at work. This superhero team of DHL employees has been volunteering there for 3 years and this year they used their powers to dismantle an old playground so a newer, more fabulous one can replace it (generously donated by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Board of Realtors Foundation). Call it a playground makeover for the homeless children who count on this play area to swing, slide and laugh.

The rain and mud did not deter this group, who took apart the equipment screw by screw, swung sledge hammers to remove the stakes in the ground, took down fencing – you name it. There was no stone unturned. Literally! By the end of the day, the volunteers were tired but everyone was happy. They genuinely wanted to be there to better their community and themselves by doing something special for the kids living at the Homeless Assistance Center.

Lisa Marie Conte Browne, 54, of Boca Raton has spent a decade in several volunteer roles on the Dreyfoos School of the Arts Foundation board. Impressed by the students’ talent at a musical luncheon, she asked for a tour and was drawn to help after seeing the dedication exhibited by the educators. “The students are talented and hard-working with tremendous heart. They make giving back an essential role in my life. The educators are loving, phenomenally talented themselves and dedicated to giving back to the next generation.” Her board involvement isn’t the only way she volunteers. Her love of Italy as a platform for learning about art motivated her to work with the foundation to provide a scholarship for a student to visit Tuscany last summer. She’s now working to establish perpetual scholarships that will allow students to visit Italy every summer.

ilma Perskin, 77, of Boynton Beach has been volunteering for a couple of years with the Area Agency on Aging’s SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) program.

An added joy of her volunteer work is when she receives thank you emails from clients.

There, she counsels individuals on health plans available for their needs based on their eligibility of Medicare or other specialty programs. Sometimes clients have bills that need to be appealed, so with her background as a financial manager she assists them with the follow up necessary to take care of any issues.

“I love watching my children interact and play with the kids at the shelter. They are all just kids being kids and, for the adults, it’s a time when everyone is lifted above the circumstances and there is a strong sense of hope. To me, contributing to a strong sense of hope is the fun part.”

The program, in its third year, coordinates monthly family nights at the shelter where KHK families host dinner and activities for the residents. They work together with residents on special projects such as the activity room and garden, and also organize their annual fundraiser, the “Princess and Pirates Ball.” They are also developing the SSS (Save, Spend, Share) program for children of KHK, where each child receives a special piggy bank divided into buckets for saving, spending and sharing. The program emphasizes sharing excess money and has members in the community who will match all commitments made to sharing.

Swan’s involved with many projects, but her primary focus is the Kids Helping Kids (KHK) program, which aims to increase awareness of philanthropy among youth while making a difference in the life of another child living at the shelter.

Wild has fun in his volunteer roles. One caller said he’d been feeling better so Wild joked that he’d added him to their baseball team to play second base. “I asked if he had a glove and he played along with me. I told him I’d pick him up for practice.” “Another time, when Chicago was hit with a monster snowstorm, I told some folks that we were meeting at PBI to fly to Chicago and help them shovel. After a second, they caught on and told me they didn’t have a shovel, but I can count them in.”

He also volunteers at Café Europa luncheons where he chats with Holocaust survivors and puts a face to some of the phone calls. Recently, he also joined a group of volunteers that help individuals look for employment. He conducts mock interviews and submits comments to the project leaders.

Conversations range from the weather to personal problems. Whatever the topic, Wild strives to let them express their feelings, answering questions when he can but ultimately allowing them to calm down and enjoy the day. “My goal is to make them laugh at least once during our phone call.”
