Clifton M. Holcomb In the July 2013 edition of Corps Connections, we introduced Cliff Holcomb, newly arrived and recently promoted manager of the Cpl Terry L. Smith Gymnasium. At the time, he was managing Outdoor Recreation as well. Then, Cliff promised that patrons could look forward to “outstanding customer service and outstanding programs.” Looks like he is well on the way to providing both: the great ideas he envisioned for programs at the gym have come to fruition. A bench press competition in January had 30 competitors and showed us that there is an interest in bodybuilding here. He has scheduled an activity each month through the year, to include a free throw contest this month, a dodgeball tournament in March, a three point shootout in April, and another bench press competition later in the year. To find out more about the upcoming free throw contest, please see page 5. For dates of the upcoming events above, see the “Mark Your Calendar” column, next page. Interested in his programs? Contact him at the gym by calling 703-614-8759.

Face-to-Face is Best To ensure the continuum of care for EFMP families, the Henderson Hall Exceptional Family Member Program utilizes a Needs Assessment. The assessment, filled out by the Marine or a family member and submitted to their current EFMP office, gathers information for Family Case Workers (FCWs) to determine need and appropriate resources and support services. Although a Needs Assessment can be used for an initial or intake assessment, in most cases it has been used during a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move. The losing EFMP office forwards the completed PCS Needs Assessment to the gaining EFMP office before the service member and family arrive at their new duty station. The goal of the gaining FCWs is to use the information in the Needs Assessment to help create a smooth transition for the service mem-

ber and family by making sure that appropriate resources and support services are in place before they arrive. Recently, the Henderson Hall EFMP was chosen to pilot a new Family Needs Assessment designed by the Office of the Secretary of Defense Office of Special Needs. Through trials, we found it a valuable tool for our clients. The biggest reason: it is designed to be an initial/intake assessment conducted by a face-to-face interview or by telephone. The dialog between the FCW and client reveals more relevant information which translates into a more comprehensive assessment of needs. With a more comprehensive assessment, FCWs are able to create a more effective Family Service Plan and better determine how case management services will be provided. The problem with a questionnaire is

that it just touches the surface. A faceto-face interview using a good tool, such as the EFMP Family Needs Assessment, generates so much more pertinent information. Most people are not aware of all the resources available to them, and it takes a capable and empathetic interviewer to find those areas of need and recommend effective resources. The Initial/Intake Family Needs Assessment is a non-clinical assessment conducted at any time. During the initial meeting with the client, FCWs gather information to address immediate needs. The Initial/Intake Assessment may also be used to determine if clients would benefit from other Marine and Family Programs, such as the School Liaison Program, for example. The goals of the EFMP Family Initial/ Intake Needs Assessment interview are
