Let’s Get Moving Through Sacrifice and Service Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. -Philippians 2:17 Rev. Toby T. Philpart, Pastor/Chairman pastor@mynewbethel.org

New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church 1928 ~ 2012 Historical Summary New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church was organized on December 16, 1928. The first meeting place was a tent erected at the corner of 7th Street and Division Avenue in West Palm Beach, Florida. Reverend Jacob C. Fennell accepted the “call” to become the first pastor of New Bethel. Some of the first pioneer members were Sister Daisy Gilbert, Sister Hattie Rivers, Sister Lottie Atkinson, Deacon Will West, Brother Spencer Atkinson and Brother Ulysses L. Mosley. A permanent church building was erected on property purchased at the current site, 911 9 th Street, West Palm Beach, Florida. The cornerstone was laid on June 14, 1931. The church’s records kept during Reverend Fennell’s pastorate reflect that in addition to the permanent structure being built, property was purchased to build a parsonage and several key church auxiliaries were formed including the Deacon Board, the Trustee Board, the Mother’s Board, the Sunday School and the Women’s Home Mission Society. Reverend Fennell was called from labor to reward on May 7, 1934. Reverend R. B. Black of Jacksonville, Florida was called as the Second Pastor to lead the New Bethel congregation in October, 1934. Under Reverend Black’s pastorate, the fiscal health of the church, following the Great Depression, was restored. Choir #2 was organized and the Usher Board purchased aisle runners to beautify the sanctuary. After two years of services, Reverend Black tendered his resignation as pastor in October, 1936. A “new era” of Christian leadership was launched in the calling of Reverend E. G. Guilford of Fitzgerald, Georgia, in November 1936, who became the Third Pastor of New Bethel. Pastor Guilford was a God sent shepherd whose leadership immediately became a shining light, not only in New Bethel, but in the surrounding community as well. His astute gift of dealing with people and the demands thrust upon him by the membership, earned him respect and devotion. On August 21, 1947, Pastor Guilford was suddenly called from his earthly labor to his heavenly reward, leaving behind a saddened and grieving congregation. At the time of his death, the building fund was in excess of $10,000, a significant amount of money during that time. In October, 1947, Reverend D. N. Connor of Fort Valley, Georgia, was called as the Fourth Pastor of New Bethel. Mindful of the dream of the late Pastor Guilford and congregation for a larger edifice, the dream became a reality in the vision and program of Reverend Connor. A Building Committee was formed and was led by supporting members that pledged one week’s salary to be paid into the building fund over a period of ninety days. The rally raised more than $10,000, an amount unheard of for one effort at a church in the community in such a short period. During Pastor Connor’s tenure, the church experienced phenomenal growth, both spiritually and economically. The cornerstone of the new edifice was laid on Sunday, October 8, 1950. The main sanctuary of the church was dedicated on Sunday, May 20, 1951, and the church’s mortgage was burned in 1956. Under Pastor Connor’s leadership, several men were called into ministry and several men were ordained. Reverend B. W. Williams joined New Bethel under the leadership of Reverend Connor and was added to the ministerial staff. Pastor Connor and his beloved wife, Sister Laura Bell Connor, served the New Bethel Family faithfully until the Lord called them home. Sister Connor died after an extended illness in November, 1971, near the end of the church’s 43 rd Anniversary Observance Evening Service. Almost four years after his retirement in 1988, the long and fruitful life of Pastor Emeritus Connor came to a peaceful end on February 7, 1992. He was 95 years old.

History continued….. Having been without a pastor for almost one year, a prayerful search led the New Bethel Family to call Reverend Russell E. Odom of Lakeland, Florida on May 31, 1989. Reverend Odom became the Fifth Pastor of New Bethel in July, 1989. His installation services were held on Sunday, August 27, 1989. Pastor Odom proved to be an innovative and outstanding leader during his time at New Bethel. Under Pastor Odom’s leadership, several young men were called to the ministry. There were also several new deacons ordained under his leadership. Pastor Odom announced his resignation suddenly from New Bethel on Tuesday, October 4, 1994, after a powerful Bible study. His resignation was effective the following Friday. Once again, our faithful Associate Pastor B. W. Williams carried out the responsibilities of the church leadership with assistance of the ministerial staff. On Monday, July 17, 1995, Reverend Carlton Gant was called as the Sixth Pastor of New Bethel. His installation service was held on Sunday, August 20, 1995, with Reverend Arthur Jackson, Jr., Moderator of the Florida East Coast Baptist Association, and Pastor of the New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Miami, Florida, presiding. On October 2, 1997, Pastor Gant announced his immediate resignation from New Bethel at the monthly business meeting. Always ready and willing to serve, Associate Pastor B. W. Williams accepted the challenge to lead the church with the assistance of the ministerial staff, Reverend Willie Mays, Jr., Reverend Kenneth Allen and Minister George Stephens. During this interim period, the congregation continued to increase its ministries and the church remained fiscally sound. New Bethel was still in need of a shepherd. The Board of Deacons organized a Pulpit Search Committee. The meeting to vote on the “call” was held on October 29, 1998 and Reverend James Lofton, Jr. of Tallahassee, Florida was selected by an overwhelming margin. Pastor Lofton’s vision for New Bethel was to “make disciples for Christ”. In working toward this goal, the church membership, prayer meeting and Bible Study attendance increased significantly. Reverend Lofton served as pastor or New Bethel for some twelve years. On October 12, 2010, Reverend James Lofton, Jr. submitted his resignation to the Board of Deacons with an effective date of October 31, 2010. Again, New Bethel called upon the service of Assistant Pastor Reverend B. W. Williams to carry out the responsibilities of interim pastor with the assistance of the ministerial staff of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He answered the call and continues to serve as we wander through the wilderness of this transition. In spite of the success of these activities, the facts remained that New Bethel was still in desperate need of a shepherd to lead us. The Board of Deacons organized a Pulpit Search Committee. The Pulpit Search Committee continued their search, fervently for months, for the right man of God to lead us. The meeting to vote on the “call” was held on May 03, 2012, and Reverend Toby T. Philpart of Ft. Pierce, Florida was selected by an overwhelming margin. Deacon Sam Cooper, Chairman of the Deacon Board and Interim Pastor Doctor Reverend B. W. Williams contacted Reverend Philpart with the good news, after the meeting was adjourned, and he readily accepted the “call” that same night, and became the Eighth Pastor of the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

History continued…. A Spirit-filled Pastoral Service for Reverend Toby T. Philpart was held on June 10, 2012 at 4:00 p.m., with a vast number of members of the Florida East Coast Missionary Baptist Association participating on program. Reverend Willie Richardson, President of Florida East Coast Missionary Baptist Association Ministers and Deacons Union, Northern Division presided over the service and Reverend Doctor C. P. Preston, the Immediate Past Moderator, who was the guest speaker, brought forth a powerful and inspiring message. Reverend Philpart exemplifies the true “Spirit of God” – he came to New Bethel with a “Vision” from God that includes every member of the church, both young and old and “The Word” that touches and electrifies the whole congregation. During his first five months tenure at New Bethel, so many good and positive accomplishments and improvements have already been made around the church with many more in “the works” for the near future. His Motto: ”Operating in a Spirit of Excellence to fulfill the Great Commission” Matthew 28:18-20 Pastor Philpart’s present “Vision” for New Bethel has inspired the followings accomplishments and improvements:  Adopted a slogan to inspire a “Spirit of Excellency and Motivation” of the Church “We are the Greatest Church on This Side of Heaven!”  Our Giving – I Corinthians 16:1-3  Formulated a Monthly Leadership Ministry & Training  Motivated a successful All Church Orientation Training  Reorganized the Youth Department & Youth Choir  Enhancement to the New Bethel Praise Dancers to include Young Male Dancers  Growth of the Mass Choir with addition of the Young Adult Choir  Men’s Choir (The Voices of Men) has been reorganized  Reorganized the Men’s Ministry  Reinstituted the Early Morning Christian Evangelism Service (Outreach in our communities to win Souls for Christ)  Organized Capital Project for Church Renovation and Upgrades (New Keyboard, Monitors, refurbished Sanctuary Windows)  Incorporated Tuesday Night Weekly Bible Study Courses  Reorganized the Membership Orientation Class (formerly the New Members Class)  Reconstructed the enhancement of the Website  Chaired the Church’s 84th Anniversary with new enhancements (Electronic Patrons) Theme: “Let’s Get Moving With Sacrifices and Services” Theme Scripture: Philippians 2:17 (NIV) - Your faith in the Lord and your service are like a sacrifice offered to him. And my own blood may have to be poured out with the sacrifices. If this happens, I will be glad and rejoice with you.”

I take this opportunity now, to thank our church leaders and all of our members for setting positive examples. It is an honor to lead such an energetic and blessed church. I am humbled that God would use me to connect the passionate, purposeful, and powerful people of New Bethel to carry out the vision God is giving us to share with his people. Much Success New Bethel!!! Value Every Day A day without love is a cold, cold day, When worldly riches fade away. A day without hope is a dreary day, Filled with shadows of dismay. A day without faith is a fruitless day, As we trudge a long life’s way. A day without friends is a lonely day, Without a cheery word to say. “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.” I John 4:10-13

New Bethel, may you continue to rise up And behold the blessings of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen 1Peter 4:11

“In Everything Give Thanks” “Mid Sunshine, cloud or stormy days When hope abounds or care dismays; When trials press and toils increase, Let not thy faith in God decrease In everything give thanks.” “ All things we know shall work for good; Nor would we change them if we could; Tis well if only he commands; His promises will ever stand In everything give thanks.” He satisfies the longing heart, He thwarts the tempter’s cruel dart, With goodness fills the hungry soul, And helps us sing when billows roll In everything give thanks.”

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. ~ Matthew 7:13-14

An angel was sent from heaven one day, She was named Martha Brittney Bray. Although her years were not very long, She filled our hearts with joy and a song. We miss her dearly from walking among us, She has taken the road made for those who trust. She did not leave us without warning, She simply said, “I’ll Meet You In the Morning”.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1: 1-5
