2023 Scholarship Recipients STUDENT OF THE YEAR

"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."- Jackie Robinson. I heard this quote as I entered high school that has stuck with me over these past 4 years. Over these quotes I have used this quote to show my path present and future. As a student, I have maintained academic excellence by being a law academy and dual enrollment student while maintaining a 4.6 GPA. But I am most proud of my impact as a leader by being president of Best Buddies, Law Club, Mock Trial, and Twenty Pearls and being involved with even more extracurriculars. My overall goal throughout college and my career is to bring inclusion and equity through law and public service. I plan to attend North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University (NCAT), majoring in political science and minoring in public relations. I will be in the honors college of NCAT to ensure a positive environment surrounded by others who will motivate further academic and community excellence. While there, I plan to use my gained knowledge to begin an initiative within the political science department to bring voter education to local seniors in high school to inform them of their voting rights and explain the candidates and legislation on their ballot. I also intend to continue many of the extracurriculars I am currently in. Namely, I aim to continue my involvement by founding a campus Best Buddies and Mock Trial Team. Upon graduating, I will go to law school and begin practicing law. Although I am not certain about the field of law I want to practice, I know I want to go where I can make the biggest impact. After some years of practicing law, I plan to transition into the field of politics and possibly lobbying for causes and organizations I feel make a significant impact on those in minority communities. I am sincerely appreciative of the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta for granting me a scholarship to help fund my path of impact.

Community Service

The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) was founded in 1971 in response to concerns regarding the growing inequities in healthcare for African Americans and the lack of a voice from Black nurses on their issues.

The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) was organized in 1971 under the leadership of Dr. Lauranne Sams, former Dean and Professor of Nursing, School of Nursing, Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama. On December 18-19, 1971, 18 Black nurses from across the country met at the home of Dr. Mary Harper, in Cleveland, Ohio. They unanimously voted to approve the following motion by Betty Smith Williams, “I move that we establish the National Black Nurses Association”.

The founding members recognized that in order to make a difference in the quality of life in our communities, Black nurses across the nation had to take the lead.

In December 2004, 5 Black nurses from Palm Beach realized this work should be expanded to their communities. Taking heed, Avis Stephens Spradley, Rochun Ridley McCray, Mia Andrews, Carol Campbell, and Ann Marie McIntosh, formed the Palm Beach County Chapter of the NBNA, designated as “Palm Beach County Black Nurses Association”.

Through the founders’ collective vision, persistence and commitment, All Black nurses now have an organization whose primary reason for being is to improve the health status of Black people in the USA.

Community Service

The Black Nurse Practitioners of Palm Beach County is a non-profit organization dedicated to Advance Practice Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioner students of color from a multicultural background in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Our goals are to mentor APRN students, support and promote advancement of APRNs and provide health education and awareness to our community. We grew from 10 to 200 members in 10 months. We value ethnic inclusiveness, our organization consists of black nurse practitioners from America, Africa, Haiti, Bahamas, and Jamaica. We understand the importance of belonging to a professional organization that sees the value in diversity, optimal health and cultural awareness.

During Covid BNPPBC's impact was felt in the community. We were the first organization to spearhead a mobile testing site in Riviera Beach. We organized several drives through hand sanitizer and mask giveaways in Boynton Beach, West Palm Beach and Lake Worth. We collaborated with other community health organizations to provide food delivery in Belle Glade.

We are keenly aware there is no better time than now, for Black Nurse Practitioners to ban together in a professional organization to not only elevate but prosper.
