Benjamin Franklin’s suggestions for the new year were sound, but ambitious. “Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbours, and let every new year find you a better man.” That’s unlikely perhaps, but uplifting: for all the discarded resolutions, there is always the chance that this contemplative time of year might, possibly, lead to regeneration or something better. This issue of Arabian Homes offers inspiration and proof that projects to renew, update or re-create are not doomed to fail in the way of many resolutions. In “Bright outlook”, we showcase a typical, developers’ London flat which has been internally rearranged by FORMstudio to create an appealing, light-filled living space. The Capital Club is on the up, too, its interiors as stylish as ever (see right) and currently charged with a feeling of energy that staff attribute to the new general manager. For this month’s interview celebrating local craftsmanship, I visited the 2000 Art Foundry, in which the mesmerising work involves reshaping materials gathered from the earth – metals, clay and wax – to re-create works of art. Appropriately for the new-year issue, we also look backwards – our feature on “10 Amazing Examples of Ancient Construction” considers the great engineering achievements of ancient peoples. By contrast, it is good work carried out in the here and now that preoccupies the writer of one of our property-related features. In “Agent Wonderful”, an Arabian Homes reader who has been disappointed by some local estate agents’ services outlines precisely what a good agent should do – and suggests moving on if they fail to deliver. Failure to deliver was never an option for the artists taking part in 15/15, an exhibition of contemporary art that opened in December (see “Fifteen fabulous”). The combined result of the artists’ endeavours is an intriguing example of creativity that celebrates this country’s cultural heritage. Dear reader, be kind to yourself this January with an easy-to-keep resolution: resolve to see this uplifting exhibition at the earliest opportunity.

Located in Franceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Brittany region is a group of the largest prehistoric European megaliths in existence. Originally constructed around 4500 BC, the biggest stone at Locmariaquer was nearly 21 meters (70 ft) in length and between 200 and 280 tons in weight. (We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know for sure because the megalith, known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Fairy Stone,â&#x20AC;? was broken long ago, possibly by an earthquake but more likely by human hands.) Astonishingly, the Fairy Stone was moved in one piece from a quarry over 10 kilometers (6 mi) away. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not known exactly how it was transported, but it could have been Ă RDWHG GRZQ D QHDUE\ FKDQQHO RU VLPSO\ WDNHQ E\ ODQG utilizing a â&#x20AC;&#x153;wooden cradle,â&#x20AC;? basically rolling logs on wooden tracks. The purpose of the site is unknown, although there is a dolmen (a type of tomb) located there. Other researchers have put forth theories involving lunar activity.
Pueblo Bonito

Located in Northwestern New Mexico, Pueblo Bonito is the largest and most well-known example of a great house (village) built by the ancestral Pueblo people. The villageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s construction began in the early part of the 10th century AD and continued for nearly 180 years, reaching a peak of around 800 separate rooms, with some buildings having as PDQ\ DV Ă&#x20AC;YH VWRULHV ,W ZDV Ă&#x20AC;UVW GLVFRYHUHG LQ E\ 86 $UP\ Lieutenant James H. Simpson and his guide, Carravahal. Since then, Pueblo Bonito has become one of the most excavated and explored ruins in the 6RXWKZHVWHUQ 8QLWHG 6WDWHV $ QXPEHU RI WKH URRPV were damaged when part of the cliff wall behind the village collapsed. (The name of the rock which fell translated as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Threatening Rock,â&#x20AC;? showing that the builders were well aware of the danger.) Just behind Pueblo Bonito lies a set of petroglyphs, mysteriously showing six-toed feet, made sometime in the late 10th century or early 11th century. 30 AH JANUARY 2017

Dating from around 2000 BC, the Dolmen of Menga is a large burial ground known as a tumulus and is located in the southern tip of Spain. A number of chambers were created by placing a large number of extremely heavy stones next to each other. The walls, the roof (which is made up of four individual pieces), and the pillars are made of the same rocks. As far as the name is concerned, legend says that a leper named Menga took refuge inside the dolmen after her husband died. Archaeologists believe the dolmen to be the largest such structure in Europe and have found several hundred distinct skeletons inside it, possibly all belonging to the ruling groups of the culture. However, the identity of the builders remains a mystery to this day. This site, along ZLWK WZR VLVWHU RQHV ZDV SODFHG RQ WKH 81(6&2 World Heritage list on July 15, 2016. JANUARY 2017 AH 31

V Built as a monument to Pharoah Amenhotep III and placed outside his now destroyed temple, the Colossi of Memnon are a pair of statues, standing nearly 23 meters (75 ft) high. The statues are of Amenhotep III, and reliefs of his wife, daughter, and mother can also be found in the rock. The statues are named after Memnon, a hero of the Trojan War, because he was the grandson of Eos, the goddess of the dawn, which is relevant to a unique attribute that one of the statues used to feature: After the statues were damaged in an earthquake, the northern one was said to make a bell-like tone in the morning, possibly due to rising temperatures. The tone was believed to indicate that one was favored by the gods. Dur Sharrukin was built by the Assyrians sometime between 717 and 707 BC and stands in the northern part of Iraq. The city was nearly 2.6 square kilometers (1 mi2) in area and contained a temple to Nabu (a vegetation god) as well as a royal palace. However, the most interesting artifact recovered from the ruins is the Assyrian Bull, a work of stone estimated to weigh nearly 40 tons. It is the largest example of a bull, winged or otherwise, in human history. 'XU 6KDUUXNLQ ZDV Ă&#x20AC;UVW H[FDYDWHG E\ )UHQFK FRQVXO 3DXO (PLOH %RWWD in 1843. W Erected as a monument to the Roman emperor Diocletian after he suppressed an Alexandrinian revolt, Pompeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pillar was erroneously believed to have been commissioned by the Roman leader Pompey. However, an inscription on the base clearly states it was made to honor Diocletian and given to him by the people of Alexandria. A myth involving Pompeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death and his head being placed in a funerary jar on top of the pillar may have led to the confusion, another thing you can blame on those pesky Crusaders. 6WDQGLQJ RYHU PHWHUV IW KLJK LW ZDV RULJLQDOO\ EXLOW GXULQJ the fourth century AD. Pompeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pillar was actually part of the Temple of Serapis, a Roman temple to an Egyptian god, but the temple is just ruins now, destroyed by the constant rise and fall of the nearby waters.

V Built and completed by the Maya sometime between AD 200 and 800, Quirigua contains exemplary examples of Mayan architecture as well as one of the largest stelae (carved stone monuments) in existence. Stela E weighs in at an astonishing 65 tons. Found in the southern half of Turkey, Catalhoyuk is estimated to have existed from around 7500 to 5700 BC. It was built by an unknown Neolithic culture that is believed to have been highly advanced. The houses of Catalhoyuk have an intriguing quirk: They have no doors and were entered from the roof, by ladder. Also, the dead seemed to be buried underneath the Ă RRUV RI WKH KRXVHV SDUWLFXODUO\ E\ WKH KHDUWKV +RZHYHU EDVHG RQ the discovery of some disarticulated bones, the bodies may have been left outdoors for a while before they were buried indoors.
Hagar Qim MALTA
V Located in Malta, Hagar Qim is believed to have been built by an unknown culture between 3200 and 2500 BC. This culture said to have been wiped out as a result of famine or natural disaster and has left few identifying details. Said to be one of the earliest examples of religious beliefs, the temple at Hagar Qim contains a number of fertility goddess statues known as Venuses, some of which are now on display in the National Museum of Archaeology in Valetta. The KRXVHV WKDW EHQHĂ&#x20AC;W IURP KHU OLJKW WRXFK DUH mostly in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where she has lived since 2011, but she still works occasionally in her native Bahrain. Among her recent local commissions is a four-bedroom house in Riffa that showcases Saraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s restrained style. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For the Bahraini owners of this villa in Riffa, I chose a palette of soft neutrals and tried to introduce natural materials with a few exciting pieces,â&#x20AC;? she says. These â&#x20AC;&#x153;exciting piecesâ&#x20AC;? include chic, graphic furniture including a stone-topped console table with metal legs and another low table with X-frame legs. Sara has used brass elements throughout the house, in the lamp bases, mirror frames and so on â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a device to visually unify the different rooms. 7KH ZDOOV VRIDV DQG Ă RRUV DUH LQ KDUPRQLRXV VKDGHV RI caramel, taupe and chocolate-brown, and pattern is used with restraint in a subtly patterned, gleaming wallpaper and several cushions with a tiny blue-and-white print. I love Frank Lloyd Wright and his philosophy of design â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it inspires me.â&#x20AC;? Moving to the UAE in 2011 was a challenge, she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had to introduce myself to a new audience, and start up again, getting to know new suppliers and contractors and studying a new market.â&#x20AC;? To do this, I avoided patterns and used simple lines, a calm palette of pale blue, mushroom and cream, and comfortable furniture.â&#x20AC;? There was one problem that needed to be addressed in this bedroom: the client hated the view from the window. eekend fun at the Bahraini Farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Market commenced activities last month at the Botanic Gardens near Budaiya village. The market is held every Saturday morning from 8am to around noon, and will continue to remain open till April 29. According to Amani Abu-Idrees, executive manager of the weekly market, this season will showcase the products of 34 farmers. Some agricultural companies are also taking part, and there are displays of farm animals and areas dedicated to food and the arts.

Among those farmers taking part is Younis Marhoon of Abu Younis Farm in Saar, who says he harvests his crops at 5am on market days, thereby ensuring his aubergines, garlic, ginger, thyme, mint and celery are as fresh as possible. The Hanging Gardens (featured in last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s issue of Arabian Homes) is also exhibiting this year.

There are also eggs â&#x20AC;&#x201C; henâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eggs, duck eggs and, if you are lucky, giant eggs with dark, knobbly shells like the skin of an avocado, which have been laid by an emu.
These metal hooks are decorated with miniature trowels and a garden fork. They cost BD10 each, at Innovation (tel: 17260099).
A bed of leafy canna lilies topped by zingy flowers is a sight to lift the heart. These plants produce large flowers in a mainly hot palette of burnt orange, yellow and scarlet, although some varieties have flowers in quieter shades of apricot, cream or pink. The lush, broad leaves are delightfully tropical, too, and come in plain green, maroon or bronze, or even striped with green and yellow. A good plant for containers, Canna indica is fast growing and does best in full sun or dappled shade. It needs regular feeding, watering and deadheading to do well. The genus name Canna comes from the Ancient Greek kanna, a type of reed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; canna lilies are not true lilies. It has a tuberous rootstock, so it can be propagated by dividing up the rhizomes (the underground stems), but it can also be grown from seed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the seeds are very hard little balls, which account for its other common name, the Indian shot plant. Canna lilies are widely available in plant nurseries across Bahrain.
