ach year, the Maui Matsuri planning committee selects a Japanese kanji character to embody its events’ activities. This year, the kanji selected is “saku,” which means “to bloom” or “to blossom.” The theme is reflected in this year’s commemorative tshirt designed by Maui-born artist Jonathan Clark. Designed to have a handmade quality, Clark started the process of creating the print by carving a woodblock with images of sakura (cherry) blossoms. He then scanned and altered the image digitally to reference the unfolding of sakura as it blooms while retaining the creased look of folded origami paper. Clark’s design and this year’s kanji theme perfectly embody the blossoming of Japanese culture on island — initiated by the seeds planted by the brave immigrants who made Maui their home and nurtured by their children and surrounding

E

communities. According to Brian Nagami, Co-Chairperson of the 2019 Maui Matsuri, “The event’s perpetual theme is ‘Kodomo No Tame Ni’ which translates to ‘For the Sake of the Children.’ It really describes what this event is about — creating an environment for families to share and learn about the Japanese culture and pass down traditions. In this spirit, the festival culminates with a traditional obon dance that encourages all ages, all religious denominations, and all ethnicities to come together to dance in honor of all ancestors.” Join Maui Matsuri in celebrating all that has helped Japanese culture bloom on Maui!

HAMAI APPLIANCE

2019 MAUI MATSURI

2019 Maui Matsuri Business Award Winner

fter 50 years of experience in the appliance /electronics business, Lester Hamai decided to venture out on his own. Lester and Clara Hamai founded Hamai Appliance in September of 1969. Their son Clyde joined them later that year, and, in 1974, their oldest

A

son, Glenn, made the family’s involvement in the business complete. In March of 1977, they relocated to a larger building in Kahului and have been there since. This year makes 50 years in business. Clyde, joined by President Bryant Hamai and VPs Garret

Hamai and Kelii Wunder, now run the business and are taking it into the 21st century. Today the company follows the same tradition that Lester Hamai started his business with — service to customers, the public and employees alike. They help local people because they are local

people. They know first-hand the problems, dreams and needs of Maui’s population. To keep up with the challenges and changes in today’s economy, Hamai stopped selling TVs and electronics a few years back and now sells mattresses and other bedding accessories. Their recently opened showroom, known as “Mattressland,” is Hamai’s effort to diversify its business and can be found

inside of Hamai Appliance. Whether you’re looking for a mattress or a built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator, Hamai Appliance will help guide you through your purchasing decisions and beyond, including installation and repairs. Their service team separates them from their competitors. They are there to service any of their products whenever needed.

“You can call the same people you bought your appliance from ... no matter how long ago you’ve purchased it. That’s the difference between our company and other big box stores,” says Bryant Hamai. Their company motto is “The people you can trust” and, along with their exceptional service, they are destined for success for years to come.
