about

Best of the best on the best island in the world M aui is once again the top-rated Hawaiian island according to Travel+Leisure, which also listed the Garden Isle as one of this year’s top 15 islands in the world. Maui’s continued reign as one of the most magical and friendly places to visit and live is pervasive. Just thumb through any travel magazine or scan social media and you’ll find accolades and tributes aplenty. Maui is indeed the best of the best. And on our lovely isle, there are also bests of the best. That is why we create a comprehensive guide listing the current standouts — the flavors of the year, if you will — in more than 60 categories. We asked readers to weigh in on their favorite restaurants, shops, tours, cultural pro-

grams and activities — everything from Best Chef to Best Sports/Surf Shop. Respondents were tasked with writing in their pick for each category resulting in a landslide of disparate nominations and close tallies, proving once again that “Maui no ka oi is so much more than a slogan: It’s just how Maui rolls. Take your time perusing our 2019’s Best of Maui guide and refer to it whenever you’re looking for Maui County’s top dining spots, commercial activities, cultural programs, shopping, spas, treats, discounts and more. After the great discoveries you’re sure to make, thank your friends and neighbors for sharing their favorites, because the best suggestions beat at the heart of our island ohana.

MAMA’S FISH HOUSE

A

nyone who’s visited Mama’s Fish House & Inn, nestled within idyllic Kuau Cove just off Hana Highway, more than once can attest that the visceral experience changes with the light. Go for lunch or afternoon cocktails and pupu and witness unobstructed views of the ocean and palms swaying in the soft breath of the trades. As the sun falls into the ocean, the vibe turns sultry and romantic with subtle reminders of the tropical splendor that lies just beyond your table — the muted silhouette of palm fronds

rustling in the breeze serenaded by the rhythmic symphony waves crash along the shore. Inside, live Hawaiian music with jazzy undertones plays softly in the background. Details are important at Mama’s, from the outrigger canoe perfect for that Instagram travel photo and gecko-shaped stone walkway leading to the banyan arch to the heady scent of exotic florals and the celebrity picture “wall of fame.” And that’s before you’re even seated! Inside the open-air restaurant, comfortable tables and booths beckon as well as two bars where

you can enjoy cocktails and menu items without reservations. Take in the tapa print tablecloths accentuated with blue and a wealth of Polynesian and Hawaiian artwork and decor — all as envisioned by owners Floyd and Doris “Mama” Christenson. Sip from crystal wine glasses and be pampered by servers and hostesses donning vintage Hawaiian wear. Allow yourself to be transported, because a trip to Mama’s is so much more than a meal — it’s a Polynesian dining adventure. Karen Christenson, Floyd and Doris’s

daughter who’s a regular presence at Mama’s, credits longtime Mama’s friend Barry Flanagan with the following simple, yet vivid description: “While I’ve never been to Tahiti, when I’m at Mama’s, I feel like I could be in someone’s Tahitian home.”

onsistent quality, a great staff and a beat on what customers like to eat is the recipe for TJ’s Warehouse Outlet’s continued success. Tucked within the Maui Chemical & Paper Products, Inc. building in the Wailuku Industrial Park, TJ’s talented cooks are always busy creating the next big bento favorite. What started as a master’s degree project by co-owner Todd Kawasaki ten years ago has turned into a popular place to pick up a bento — those ideally sized, singleportion take-out or homepacked meals common in Japanese cuisine. Now offering daily plate lunches and a variety of new poke, TJ’s invites you to

ince 1999, Tom Muromoto has served as Executive Chef at Ka‘anapali Beach Hotel. Under his remarkable guidance and stellar culinary creativity, the cuisine at the hotel’s signature Tiki Terrace restaurant has reached a level of excellence that has garnered numerous local and national awards and stellar reviews — including another Best Chef award as voted by readers of The Maui News. Also voted Best Brunch Buffet for 2019, Tiki Terrace excels under Muromoto’s inventive hand with renowned Sunday brunches and holiday crowds that can top 1,000 guests.

Born and raised in Hawaii provides Muromoto with a unique perspective on food, a view that has served him well throughout his career as an award-winning chef. While taking cues from our unparalleled ethnic diversity and the distinctive Native Hawaiian diet alone would have provided him with almost unlimited possibilities, Muromoto takes it a step further, combining that island advantage with boundless culinary curiosity to create a style of Hawaii regional cuisine that is, truly, his very own. One of Muromoto’s most famous signature dishes is Ko‘ala Lamb Chop, which

hen Mama’s Fish House opened in 1973, it was a Shangri La on Maui’s wild North Shore — a remote slice of paradise light years away from the hum of big resorts and a penciled-in asterisk on most delivery routes. With no trucks to supply clean linens, owners Floyd and Doris Christenson built a laundry facility on site, and with limited access to frozen foods shipped from the Mainland, they turned to local fishermen, farmers and ranchers, decades before the farm-totable movement took root. “Fish were plentiful and cheap, and the fishermen would deliver their fresh catch daily,” says Karen

Christenson, daughter, marketing guru and utility player in restaurant operations. “We started serving fresh Hawaiian fish at a time when there were only steakhouses — long before it was in vogue.” What was once a necessary adjustment is today Mama’s gold standard and signature attraction — the freshest fish. Mama’s still purchases from local fishermen with some relationships spanning generations. “It’s so important that we contribute to the Hawaiian way of life while helping local ranchers and fishermen support their families,” says Christenson. And so the love story with Mama’s Fish House contin-

ues, with dinner reservations often booked several weeks — or months — in advance. Executive Chef Perry Bateman shucks glistening Haaheo oysters from Hilo; skillet sears bottom fish such as uku, caught at 800-foot depths off Lanai; stuffs mahimahi with crab; cuts ono into chunks for ceviche; steams whole opakapaka in sizzling peanut oil. The everrotating menu changes daily, depending on what’s caught. Diners can’t get enough of the ono ceviche and macadamia-nut crab cakes with fire-and-ice relish. And fall head over heels for new items such as glistening Haaheo oysters from Hilo topped with passionfruit mignonette.

Consistently ranked the No. 1 Best Overall Restaurant on Maui, Mama’s Fish House is one of the top restaurants in America with too many national awards to mention. Visitors cherish the vibe and the food so much that it’s often the first place they go straight off the plane, and their last destination before they depart.

f you’re looking for TJ’s Warehouse, you’ll find it on the first floor of the Maui Chemical and Paper building in Wailuku. An unusual location, perhaps, but the business started as a party products supplier before morphing into a retail store and restaurant business. Once TJ’s started selling plate lunches, there was no looking back. Try the fried Opakapaka plate lunch special. With local-sized portions, you’ll likely take half home for dinner. Joel Kawasaki, who manages the retail store and the kitchen, has focused on plate lunches in the last year or so. “I am very appreciative of the customers for nominating us for this award. wenty-five years ago, no one dreamed of growing vine ripened tomatoes, fresh sweet corn or crisp baby lettuce in Hawaii. Sugar cane and pineapple plantations dominated the farming landscape, and most food was shipped to Hawaii from thousands of miles away. Chef Peter Merriman had a vision for the growth of local agriculture and the potential of Hawaii’s rich volcanic soils. He along with twelve other prominent chefs encouraged farmers to grow local produce, raise meats locally and start a healthier more sustainable Hawaii. n integral part of the Maui community, Mana Foods — located in the heart of Paia — is recognized island-wide for its natural, local and organic products. It’s also a beloved gathering place where people come in after a day at the beach or getting food to take home where they’ll run into friends and stop to chat in the aisles. In addition, Mana offers an extensive hot and cold food bar, salad bar and soup selection including a robust selection of vegan and vegetarian entrees and side dishes. At the top of Mana Foods’ most popular vegetarian offerings are its baked and barbecued tofu dishes. “If we don’t put those out every day, we hear it from our

customers,” quips Mana Foods’ ‘Jackie of all trades’ Theresa Thielk, who is also partner/part owner of Mana Foods in addition to the many hats she wears. “It’s the first thing we make every morning.” All items available in Mana Foods’ deli are made fresh daily from scratch using the purest ingredients including extra virgin olive oil and gluten-free soy sauce. Mana’s head chef extraordinaire, Anne Gale, has even found a source for vegetarian oyster sauce. “We keep the ingredients in our vegetarian dishes and bakery items clean and simple by using organic ingredients in all our prepared food,” Thielk says. “We don't use

Among the most popular dishes are the fried spring rolls, which feature ground pork, mushrooms, long rice, carrots and onions, all wrapped in rice paper and fried until crispy. The calamari, another crispy dish, is served with tamarind sauce. Other popular dishes include green papaya salad, rare

MAUI EASY RIDERS

M

aui Easy Riders’ tour philosophy is pretty simple: Give guests the best experience possible. “Our tours are very intimate,” says owner/founder Billy Campbell. “It’s more like a road or bike trip with friends and family than a traditional tour.” There’s no stable of guides and you won’t get picked up in front of your resort only to board a noisy bus filled with virtual strangers. Small groups are the key to Maui Easy Riders’ success and phenomenal word-ofmouth promotion found on social media travel sites. Enjoy the Haleakala downhill ride on a comfy cruiser bike via a guided, self-guided or private tour or try the “Private Road to Hana” offering.

As committed stewards of the environment, Trilogy last year banned aerosol sunscreen on all of their tours, instead offering complimentary reef-safe sunscreen to everyone on board.

hrough performances, exhibits, events and educational programs, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center infuses new understandings of people and places, eras and experiences into the lives of Maui’s residents and the visitors who flock to the island. “Our blending of worldclass entertainment, Hawaiian cultural performances and history, and visual arts with both local and global perspectives, and a diversified arts education program benefitting both students and teachers continue to make the MACC the most comprehensive arts center in Hawaii,” says Cultural

Programs Director Kahulu Maluo, who works to reinforce the MACC’s main mission of enriching the Maui community through visual and performing arts and cultural programming. From Henry Kapono’s Artist 2 Artist concert series to the benefit concerts by Paul Simon to the unprecedented fifth HAPA show due to an audience that just couldn’t get enough of Barry Flanagan and Keli‘i Kaneali‘i — the duo that became one of the most recognized names in Hawaiian music, key programs continue to bring beauty and creativity to Maui residents.

Among her most popular items are ornaments and scarves imprinted with Reeve’s fluid tropical design. Metal and paper art depicting trees and leaves, marine life and animals, birds, landscape and more are also big draws, as are the gallery’s selection of Hailey Go Lightly magnets, matted prints, greeting cards and limited edition prints. he primary fundraising vehicle for Maui Humane Society, the Fur Ball, attracts hundreds of animal-lovers who flock to the beloved event annually in support MHS’s mission “to protect and save the lives of Maui’s animals, accepting all in need, educating the community, and inspiring respect and compassion towards all animals.” While the Fur Ball concept is not unique, it wasn’t until Nancy Willis, Director of Development and Marketing, got her paws on it in 2016 that it ascended to the level of Best Gala. “When I came on board, one of the first things they told me was we’re bringing Fur Ball back,” recalls Willis, who has an extensive events background. “It was natural; it just worked.” The first Fur Ball under Willis’ leadership was “Paws Vegas” held at King Kekaulike High School. “And we’ve been growing and improving it every year,” she says.

The galas generally reflect themes found in pop music and culture, such as the upcoming (and sold-out) “Studio Fifty-Fur Ball,” heralding the disco era, on Sept. 7 at Wailea Beach Hotel. Last year’s Fur Ball, “Gimme Shelter,” drew a capacity crowd, many of whom came dressed as their favorite hair-band lead singer, ’80s rock diva or mega-selling duo such as Hall & Oates. The evening featured a gourmet dinner, no-host bar, gambling (for fun) in the Hard Rock Cat-sino and a

touching presentation about MHS and its lifesaving work. The Fur Ball is also known for its live and silent auction items which have included Bruno Mars tickets, all inclusive ski trips and innovative animal-centric packages.

dventure seekers with a permanent Maui County address can zip to their heart’s content — whether soaring 700 feet above the ground or testing their mettle on the longest side-by-side zipline course in the state — at reduced rates courtesy of Pi‘iholo Ranch Zipline’ s discounts for local residents. “Our goal is to motivate the local community to come out and enjoy this activity and pass the information along,” says General Manager Cori Seki in reference to being selected as Best Kama‘aina Activity by Maui News readers. So grab friends, family — the little neighbor girl down the street — because Pi‘iholo Ranch Zipline’s highly expe-

rienced staff are adept at bolstering the courage to let loose on the line among even the most cautious in your group. Choose from two incredible courses — a tree-top course that transcends the green canopies of Upcountry Maui and the extended fiveline course offering views of south and central Maui coastlines. So if you’re seeking an adventurous kamaaina deal that embraces Maui’s great outdoors, check out Piiholo Ranch Zipline. Resident discounts can be as much as half off the regular price, depending on the time of year and seasonal promotions. Just remember to bring your ID.

veloped through a partnership with the Maui Farm Bureau, and Kaiser Permanente. Kaiser generously provided an initial grant of $50,000 to launch the program in 2009. Now ten years into the program, it can emphatically be stated that Fresh-4-All is truly a program that benefits the hungry. The Maui Food Bank is more effectively promoting healthier food options for Maui County’s working poor, low-income families, seniors on fixed incomes, children, youth, and the homeless population. Farmers on Maui and

Molokai benefit from having a new market for their produce. This enables them to offer the Food Bank quality fresh produce at significant discounts. Specific fresh produce such as apples, potatoes, onions, carrots, and oranges are purchased and brought in from the mainland. Of course, Maui County’s food insecure benefit greatly because of having access to healthy foods that they otherwise couldn’t afford. This helps close the “nutrition gap” that so frequently impacts the most vulnerable members of our community.
