The Fishing Village

10

Fun for both the kids and kids at heart

This is a spot for catching rainbow trout, right next to the Veijari amusement park. The fish can be filleted, salted and smoked to order. You can also bring your own fishing equipment if you prefer, and pay only for what you catch. Opening times: daily between 11am and 6pm (June 4 – August 7). Free admission, via separate entrance.

Stone Age Village

At a genuine excavation site, this is an introduction to how people hunted, gathered, and lived in the Stone Age. The discovery path through the site contains numerous restored Stone Age artefacts and dwelling types from various parts of the world that have been discovered over the years. The most recent addition is the Rusavierto log building, found locally and dating from about 4200 years ago, that corresponds to a fully restored counterpart from the same era in Sweden.

Located in an attractive area of parkland running through a verdant stream-fed gorge, Veijari also has water features and buildings that house an aquarium, farm animals and other small animals. There are plenty of things to enjoy – such as horse riding, pirate rafts, boats, canoes, pedaloes, a rope slide, minigolf, swings, trampolines, mountain bikes, a circuit for all-terrain vehicles (ATV), and a number of bouncy castles. Additionally there’s a grill restaurant and a souvenir shop.

Enquiries: tel. +358 400 472 395

Opening times: daily between 11am and 6pm (31 May – 10 August). Prior bookings for groups (19 – 25 May).

Activities and adventure in the great outdoors The ever whispering pines of 3 Pyhä-Häkki Saarijärvi’s Pyhä-Häkki National Park is one of the smallest in Finland (12 km²), yet in terms of visitor numbers, it is one of the most popular. In this 50 year-old national park, visitors can admire some of the country’s finest old-growth forests and peatland outside Lapland. Traces of a forest fire dating from the beginning of the last century can still be seen among the ancient pines and spruces. There are two hiking trails of different lengths (3km and 6km), one of which leads to a jetty and sheltered area with an open fireplace beside a lake where food can be cooked. During the summer season a guide from Metsähallitus (the Finnish Forest and Park Service) is at hand to answer queries. The regional hiking route of Central Finland also passes through the park, with accommodation available for hikers in the Poika-Aho croft. Viitasaarentie 2119, FI-43100 Saarijärvi

38 Kirkkovuori Observation Tower At over 20m, Kirkkovuori offers stunning views over Lake Pääjärvi towards Karstula. There’s a 350m nature trail leading to the tower, and at its foot there is a lean-to, with an open-air chapel nearby. Pääjärvenmäentie 20, FI-43500 Karstula.

4

A touch of Lapland in 41 Salamajärvi National Park By contrast, the Salamajärvi National Park in Kivijärvi is at 60 km² one of Finland’s largest outside Lapland. The scenery is reminiscent of the Lapp wilderness in miniature, and the Salamaperä Nature Park is right next to it. Some of the park’s unique features include string bogs, untouched forest lakes, stone deposits from an ancient shoreline, old-growth forest, abundant birdlife, and Finnish forest reindeer. For guide services, see the Sirkka Experience on page 5. Koirasalmentie 1220, FI-43800 Kivijärvi

Kulhanvuori – one of Central 2 Finland’s highest points At its highest, Kulhanvuori is 260 m above sea level, and 60 m above the surrounding terrain. There is also the kilometre long Syväoja gorge nearby, which often contains ice formations as late as July. The fell, gorge, ridges, and other water features surrounding them, form a unique natural landscape which can be explored via a 3.5 km hiking trail. Konttimäentie 1100, FI- 43220 Mahlu (Saarijärvi)

Julmat Lammit 1 – ‘The Cruel Ponds’ These features are remnants from the Ice Age and were an inspiration for Finland’s national poet, Runeberg. Located in a popular nature reserve close to highway 13, these rugged, impressive kettle ponds are just one example of the kind of glacial features that have sculpted Finland’s landscape. There is a 3 km hiking trail that goes around the first three ponds in the chain which is rocky in some places, so best explored in summer. On the bank of the third lake there is a sheltered area with an open fireplace, an observation deck and a beach for swimming. The route forms part of the 12 km long Runeberg Nature Trail, which loops its way through the area of Kolkanlahti in Saarijärvi and also passes close to the Ahvenlampi camping site. Kokkolantie 886, FI-43100 Saarijärvi

The Saarijärvi whitewater route is an 82 km chain of lakes and rivers that runs from Kyyjärvi via Karstula and Pylkönmäki to Saarijärvi. The route is rich in natural diversity and consists of 22 sets of rapids that are relatively easy to follow, with the calmest parts downriver and the most challenging nearest the source. Whitewater safaris can be booked locally.

The Seven Lakes Paddling Route This route connects the lake of Saarijärvi with a series of others nearby. There are places to fish on both the rapids and lakes along the way, and many beautiful landing spots to stop where campfires are permitted.

Further information about fishing can be obtained from the region’s tourist information offices as well as directly from the accommodation providing it. For more information go to www.fishing.fi

Easy fishing for the whole family! Rainbow trout from the Fishing Village! This is a spot for catching rainbow trout, right next to the Veijari amusement park. The fish can be filleted, salted and smoked to order. You can also bring your own fishing equipment if you prefer, and pay only for what you catch (see page 2).

The Joys of Nature

Shoot the Saarijärvi Rapids!

The favourite spots for fly fishing enthusiasts are the rapids at Heijostenkoski, Riekonkoski and Hilmonkoski. Meanwhile, joint permits can be issued for fishing on the bigger lakes. Fishing services are provided by Jakola farm, from their Rentola cottage close to the Heijostenkoski rapids (see page 8). Other accommodation options may also offer fishing lessons, arrange permits, and hire out boats and equipment if needed.

Purola Farm: Cross-country trekking on Icelandic horses 23

Situated by a lake in beautiful countryside, Purola is a farm that offers not only bed and breakfast, but also outdoor holidays for the whole family throughout the year. The accommodation is on both floors of the farm’s main building, and in summer there is also a barn and lakeside sauna that can be used.

Rental and transportation of boating/canoeing equipment. 22 Saarijärven Eräpalvelut Guide Services

There are treks ranging from half an hour to two days available on Icelandic horses (also one Shetland to use) and a range of care treatments to choose from - including peat sauna.

A number of services are available for hire: there is the Kotakylä venue (for evening events); hiking equipment; boating and canoeing equipment; two high quality tepees by the lake at Summasjärvi, (sleep a max. of 50 people); a tepee sauna; a smoke sauna; a hot tub; overnight accommodation in cabins; and an ice sauna (in winter only).
