RHYS EDWARDS

DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University, where we host Hull Ionians in another Round of National 2 North. Its great to see you all back in person and able to watch live rugby, with relatively no restrictions. We have certainly missed the noise of a home crowds, and your support is immensely appreciated. Today sees us play our first fixture at home, following to away trips in Rounds 1 and 2, in which we picked up 1 win (Blaydon) and a narrow loss (Fylde). The squad is looking sharp and keen to getting back on home soil this weekend. Our opponents today, however, have already proved to be the team to beat this season getting off to a flyer with 2 wins from 2, picking up maximum points with try bonuses. The BUCS Super Rugby Programme is around the corner, and preparations are going well for our first fixture on the 29th September against Hartpury (Away). Its great to see our new coaching group manage the performance group of players, led by Scott (Sneddon) our Head Coach, supported by Jim (Henry), Jamie (Taylor), Martin (Webdale) and Anthony (Allen). Our development group are also taking shape having been in for the last few weeks. This group are shaping well led by James Peters and assisted by Josh Toms.

you of members of our club, and your support would ensure that we continue to develop the next generations of players and staff. All the best to everyone today.

Finally, as I’m sure you are all aware, we have recently launched our new club membership model, it would be great to have

Great to be back at it and finally with a home league game having been on the road for the first two weeks of the season. A lot has changed since our last home game, Gerard and Duster (Quins Women), Smithy (Doncaster Knights), Ed (Sarries), Kam (Tennis) and Andrew ‘shizzer’ McBay (Tigers) have all have all moved and although all seem to be going great in their new roles they all keep a close eye on us back here and send their best for the season. The new staff Scott Sneddon and Martin Webdale are settling in well with returning staff Ass. Prof. Jamie Taylor and Anthony Allen who are now in their third season with us. There is also a new Duster on board, James Peters / J Pizz / Duster#2, no where near as good as the original Dust at bashing keyboards but he

is a keen young coach who is being groomed by JT and will be a good addition to the team looking after BUCS2 and the Development Squad alongside Tomsy. It was great to get back to league rugby and having had two decent tests in pre-season against Hinckley and Rosslyn Park the lads were well prepared for the first game away at Blaydon. With no league rugby season last year we have essentially two years of ‘freshers’ which resulted in 10 league debuts in the match day 20, this probably contributed to the less than perfect performance in which we struggled to get going, that said we managed to grind the win out with fly-half Charlie Titcombe have a fine game. Fylde away was always going to be a big step up and we didn’t have enough to get the

job done despite a fantastic effort from the boys in terms of work rate we lacked the accuracy both sides of the ball to get anything from the game. It’s very early to call but I would certainly expect that Fylde team to be up there come the end of the season. I’m sure you are all as excited to see lots of lads on home debut today in both the Nat 2 game and the friendly against Blackheath 2’s! Up the Boro!

TODAYS OPPOSITION

HULL IONIANS RUFC Hull Ionians RUFC is based at Brantingham Park and formed in 1989 following the merger of Hull and East Riding with Ionians. League rugby had started two seasons earlier with Hull and East Riding playing in North One and Ionians in Yorkshire Three, six levels lower at that time. At this stage Hull and East Riding were down to a small 1st XV squad without ownership of their own ground or clubhouse. Ionians owned their ground and clubhouse had a thriving mini/junior section that was developing many excellent young players, but a first team that required more experience in order to retain them. The merger was therefore a perfect arrangement. The merger was greatly assisted by the C-CAT Cup staged at Ionians Elloughton ground the previous season. Ionians made an early exit from this sponsored mid-week competition and gave full support to their prospective new members

who went on to win the competition and the first set of shirts in the new club colours. The plans for the move to a new ground, literally over the fence in Brantingham, evolved at this time, moving to the ground in 1994 with the Brantingham Park Club house opening in 1995. In July Hull Ionians announced the appointment of Graham Steadman as Head of Rugby, a dual, full-time role with the priority of focusing on the first team but with the added task of filling some of the rugby development gaps created by cuts at the Rugby Football Union. Hull Ionians have bounced between National 1 and National 2 in recent years and are now preparing for a season which will bring a local derby against Hull as well as clashes against Harrogate, Huddersfield, Rotherham, Sheffield Tigers and Wharfedale.

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC

A BRIEF HISTORY 1984 Rex Hazeldine is appointed as Head Coach leading the side to a UAU title and victory in the Leicestershire Cup. A touring Australian Universities side was also defeated.

1976

1919

1962-68

Loughborough College formed the original Rugby Union side in September 1919.

These were spectacular years for Loughborough, winning every UAU title except 1965. Gerald Davies, John Mantle, Dave Rollit, John Taylor, Bev Risman and Colin MacFadyean, became world class players. John Robins became the first British and Irish Lions coach.

1930 Loughborough Colleges competed in their first Universities Athletic Union competition, beating Nottingham University 8-0 in their first match.

1939 Loughborough Colleges reached the UAU final for the first time, losing narrowly to Swansea.

1953 Loughborough Colleges won the UAU for the first time.

Middlesex 7s winners: 1959, 1964 1966, 1970 and 1976.

1996 Loughborough enter the leagues at the bottom of the RFU pyramid.

The Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The team won the UAU in 1977, 1978 and 1979, with the 1978–79 side captained by the young centre Clive Woodward.

17

1970 The legendary Jim Greenwood coaches the Colleges to victory in the Middlesex Sevens, and the first UAU final at Twickenham. This side was probably the strongest ever, with six future internationals, Louis Dick, David Cooke, Clive Rees, Fran Cotton, Steve Smith, and Dick Cowman.

1997 Loughborough wins over Cambridge and Oxford in consecutive weeks signals the changing balance of power in student rugby.

1998 Ian Smith is appointed as the first full-time Director of Rugby.

2003 The World Cup winning England team was coached by six Loughborough alumni: Clive Woodward, Dave Alred, Andy Robinson, Dave Reddin, Phil Larder and Simon Hardy.

2005 Winning BUCS in 2005 breaks our longest spell without a BUCS victory.

2006 Real Varsity Match v Bath. Floodlights Appeal provides campus venue for the first ever rugby ‘event’ and engages alumni leading to the Vice Presidents club. A 3000+ crowd watched Loughborough beat Bath.

2008 Director of Rugby Dave Morris leads the side to promotion into National League 2 North, making the team the first student side to take part in the National Leagues.

2009 The Dan James Memorial Match Loughborough 23 – 20 England U20 A magnificent achievement for Dave Morris’ team and a suitably characterful performance through which to remember Dan.

2012 Loughborough v The Barbarians. A huge match to mark the opening of the Loughborough Stadium. Andy Robinson’s Barbarian side win 40– 7. Loughborough promoted into National League 1.

2016 Fiji win the first Olympic 7s competition coached by Loughborough alumni Ben Ryan, defeating Team GB in the process and fellow Loughborough alumni Phil Burgess.

2017 Loughborough Lightning enter the Tyrrells Premier 15s league.
