Research excellence Research at Loughborough prides itself on excellence and relevance, shaping public policy, improving lives, and enabling business and industry to compete more effectively. Internationally recognised strengths Our research spans the arts, humanities, business, social sciences, sport, health, science, design, engineering and mathematics – creating positive change right across society. Many of the individual strengths within our disciplines cluster around our five Beacons. These long established research areas deliver significant influence and impact, as part of our ongoing commitment to making a difference in the world. • Built environment • Communication and culture • High-value manufacturing • Sport and exercise • Transport technologies

Global challenges

Ready to respond

Loughborough researchers bring their expertise together to find solutions to some of the biggest challenges we face as a society today.

When needed, our research is responsive. In 2020, many Loughborough researchers adapted the focus of their work to support the global fight against COVID-19. Existing research was redirected to support testing capabilities; our expertise was called upon by Government for guidance; and national surveys were conducted to gather information that would support the nation’s recovery.

• Changing environments and infrastructure • Energy • Health and wellbeing • Secure and resilient societies Our collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach allows us to develop innovative solutions that can be directly applied in the real world.

Centres of Excellence Respected internationally for the quality and relevance of their research, our flagship centres deliver their work in partnership with the public and private sector, many of which are supported by nationally unique laboratory facilities. We have 14 in total, which include:

For example, a Loughborough-led study created guidance on how to design and operate non-domestic buildings to minimise the risk of airborne transmission of COVID-19, and other viruses. The government funded AIRBODS (Airborne Infection Reduction through Building Operation and Design for SARS- CoV-2) project is helping to get large-scale events back up and running, with trials taking place at several ‘test’ venues including the O2 arena and Wembley Stadium.

Centre for Research in Social Policy (CRSP)

Delivering high quality applied policy research for over 30 years, including the Minimum Income Standard (MIS) – the research that sets the Living Wage - which has been marked as one of the UK’s most important academic breakthroughs. Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST)

Creating impact through enterprise

OUTSTANDING ENTREPRENEURIAL UNIVERSITY OF THE YEAR THE TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION AWARDS 2019

AWARDED 5* FOR INNOVATION INTERNATIONAL QS STARS SCHEME 2020

Enterprise is at the heart of the University’s activities, enhancing the student experience, developing entrepreneurial skills, creating impact from research, and driving regional prosperity through Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park (LUSEP) and economic development partnerships.

Driving regional prosperity The University, as a regional anchor institution, engages with its local areas in the East Midlands and East London, to drive growth and regeneration, which often leads to significant national economic impact. On our East Midlands campus, LUSEP is now home to over 90 companies, ranging from graduate start-ups and University spinouts to global technology and research and development firms. Recent developments on LUSEP include: • a 109,000 sq ft flagship office for leading business management software provider The Access Group. • The National Centre for Combustion and Aerothermal Technology – a magnet for low emission aerospace engineering. • a forthcoming expansion to SportPark, fuelling the ambition for Loughborough to be at the heart of a global sports innovation hub. • The launch of LU Inc. the University’s business incubator, which brings together academic and graduate entrepreneurs with founders from across the region. The University is involved in several other key initiatives in the region, including: • A Careers and Enterprise Hub in Loughborough town centre, a partnership with Loughborough College and Charnwood Borough Council to help people develop their skills and boost the local and regional economy as it bounces back from the impact of the pandemic. • Based on our work with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program (MIT REAP), we are working closely with the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership and other partners, to accelerate economic growth and job creation through innovation-driven entrepreneurship.

20

AT A G LA N C E

Spinout company success We have prioritised commercialisation of research in recent years, building on our track record of protecting and exploiting intellectual property to maximise economic, social and cultural impact. This is reinforced by the achievements of the University’s recent spinouts, all of which have attracted significant external investment: Previsico has been on a fast track since spinning out of environmental geography research in 2019 to deliver the very latest third generation flood forecasting technology to those who need it most.

Zayndu was spun out of bioelectrics research in 2019 to launch the world’s first ‘activated air’ seed sterilisation system, providing a sustainable alternative to chemical treatment or washing.

Figura Analytics was spun out of chemistry research in 2021, to develop its rapid testing technology platform aimed at helping the drinks industry to improve quality and consistency of ingredients and finished products.

Impact through knowledge exchange

Graduate enterprise

The University partners business, public and voluntary organisations to drive innovation and their growth potential, through knowledge exchange.

The Loughborough Enterprise Network supports students and graduates at every stage of their enterprise journey. In addition to opportunities to develop their entrepreneurial mindset, we also provide skills training, funding and the workspaces they need to get their businesses started.

For example, during a two-year partnership with Trelleborg Applied Technologies, we addressed the problem of wind turbine radar interference, and developed a technology that will allow wind farms to be built closer to airports, military bases and weather stations that rely on radar – supporting the progress of sustainable energy generation.

In 2020, Alcuris, a telecare company founded by engineering graduate Alex Nash, was selected for Techforce 19 – an NHS and government-led initiative to find digital solutions to support the vulnerable during the pandemic. Alex established Alcuris at LUSEP in 2016 to launch MemoHub®, one of the most advanced social alarms in the UK, which has been adopted by many local authorities.

Equality, diversity and inclusion The Loughborough University community is a diverse body of people with different perspectives, values and attitudes. We seek to promote an inclusive environment where such differences are shared and valued; where any unfair treatment or discrimination is challenged; and where all individuals are able to reach their full potential regardless of their background.

Our commitment to staff Creating a diverse, respectful and inclusive culture is a key priority within our People and Organisational Development Strategy. By delivering positive actions, we hope to achieve: • An inclusive, welcoming and vibrant culture in which all colleagues and students feel valued, respected and engaged. • Increased diversity within the academic community, professional services and leadership communities. • Better representation within the University’s decision-making forums. • Equal opportunity for all through identifying and removing systematic barriers. • The University’s leadership will work to embed the principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion into the way we work, study and live at Loughborough. For further information visit lboro.ac.uk/our-people

Our commitment to students Values of equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded into all aspects of student life at Loughborough. The Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity Service are there to support our students should they face any issues, as well as the Welfare and Diversity section of Loughborough Students’ Union (LSU), who work to ensure a student’s time at Loughborough is the best it can possibly be. They provide support and empower diverse and underrepresented student groups, to ensure everyone has a voice within LSU and University settings.

Our commitments to all The University is a member of the Race Equality Charter which aims to improve the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic staff and students and provides a framework through which we can work to identify and self-reflect on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of minority ethnic staff and students.
