RICHARD ALLEN

DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Loughborough University Stadium for our FA Women’s National League game versus West Bromwich Albion. This is my last game as Director of Football at the University before I move on to pastures new. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players and staff who have supported me over the past 4 years. I would also like to thank all those spectators who come along and support us every week. I think we have made huge strides with the programme and I’m sure it will go from strength to strength. Our last game versus Brighouse was a hum dinger. 4-1 up with 20 minutes to go and in complete control only to find us on 91 minutes at 4 a piece. A 95th minute cracker by Abbie Bensted saw us get a much-deserved win and 3 points and more importantly lifted us out of the bottom 3. It was a shame that our game versus was called off at Stoke last weekend so good to get back into action and keep the momentum going. Today’s opponents under the guidance of Jenny Sugarman will be a tough job. They did a job on us last time out and it should be a good battle between both teams and both coaches. Backto-back wins for us would be fantastic.

We are pleased to welcome the players, supporters and directors of WBA and look forward to what we hope will be an exciting and entertaining game. Richard Allen Director of Football

CAPTAIN New competition, new opponents and a fresh week to go again. Whilst our game last week was called off due to a waterlogged pitch, thankfully our match from the week before has plenty of talking points for me to write about! We went into the Brighouse game full of confidence. We’d been playing well, dominating possession and creating chances and I think we all knew it was an opportunity to get a result against a team that have been performing well this season as shown by the league table. We started the game bright, creating chances from the first minute and didn’t really look back. 4-1 up, we were the better team, with more possession and looked a threat every time we went forward. However, as we know in this league, switch off and get punished. 4-4 in the last minute, before an unbelievable strike from Bensted with the last kick of the ball to win us those deserved 3 points. It was amazing to have so much support and having the younger ones coming to be our mascots. What a game it

was, plenty of goals and action which hopefully inspire them to keep going and one day be a Loughborough lightning player.

They joined the Midland Combination Women’s Football League in 1995, but was not part of West Bromwich Albion F.C. In the 2004–05 season they were incorporated in the WBA Community Programme and committed to developing youth players. They continued in this way

for four more seasons. In 2009, the club was part of The Albion Foundation and was incorporated into Sporting Club Albion, Their second season in this format saw them win the Midlands Combination Women’s Football League title and gain promotion the FA Women’s Premier League in the process. Over the next seasons they have stabilised themselves in the Premier League Northern Division and are looking to become one of the strongest teams over the next few years. In the 2015/16 season, the club achieved a league and cup double winning both the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division

and the Birmingham Ladies County Cup – a huge memorable success for the club.

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING FC

A BRIEF HISTORY

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002. For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs. Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.

As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.

15

MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport. The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.

Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.
