RICHARD ALLEN

DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Loughborough University Stadium for our FA Women’s National League (Norther Prem) game versus Bridghouse. After feeling disappointed dropping 2 points last weekend away at Sheffield in a game we dominated. Going 1 goal up we should have built on that but ended conceding and own goal and then just couldn’t get past an inspired goalkeeper. A win would have taken us out of the bottom 3, the draw means we are 1 point behind Middleborough but with a game in hand. Our performances post-Christmas have been strong, but we need to turn good performances into results. Today we hope to put the performance and results together against Bridghouse who currently sit in 7th position. Earlier in the season we narrowly lost 2-1 but we feel we have made significant progress since then. Last Wednesday our BUCS Women’s 1’s team lost narrowly 1-0 to Northumbria. Disappointing as it stopped our perfect 10 out of 10, win season in that competition. However, that said winning the league and only loosing 1 game is an amazing achievement. We now head into the knockouts hoping to win the overall cup competition. The BUCS trophy was presented to our captains prior to the match by our Vice Chancellor, Professor Nick Jennings

We are pleased to welcome the players, supporters and directors of Bridghouse and look forward to what we hope will be an exciting and entertaining game. Richard Allen Director of Football

CHLOE YOUNG

CAPTAIN New competition, new opponents and a fresh week to go again. After our return from the Christmas break, something has felt different about this team! There is a buzz and confidence in our play that has been inconsistent in previous weeks. The togetherness the girls have shown over the last 4 games has been incredible and we all feel we have made progress towards where we want, deserve and expect to be. Last weekend we took on Sheffield, both teams were fighting for points and they were tough competitors. Whilst we had the better of the chances, we couldn’t convert and unfortunately ran out of time to get the 3 points we deserved. We’ve picked up 4 points in 2 games that were both played under tough conditions, perhaps not the prettiest of football but grit and sticking to our game plan paid off for us. We really feel like we’ve started 2022 on a real positive, and there is a strong belief we can continue this against Brighouse.

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING FC

A BRIEF HISTORY

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002. For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs. Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.

As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.

15

MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport. The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.

Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.
