LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING V SARACENS WOMEN

RHYS EDWARDS

DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University for another Allianz Premier 15s Fixture. The last few weeks have been a testing time with COVID, which is still an ongoing challenge, which saw last weeks fixture against Wasps postponed. I am pleased that we are back playing today but we all need to be cautious and safe. Today’s match sees us host Saracens, who have, as always been the consistent force that they are. Our previous game at the beginning of the year was another classic battle between us, but with our squad depleted it proved too big a challenge for our young team. We head into this fixture off the back of a good run of form and consistent selections which have helped us pick up a good win against Bristol Bears before Christmas. We welcome back our Canadian second row paring of Courtney Holtkamp and Abby Duguid, who have come back to finish the year prior to hopefully going to the World Cup in New Zealand. Courtney makes her return today, with Abby being available for selection next week. Welcome back both. Its great to celebrate this week the inclusion of a number of our U18s players in the England TDG group, namely Molly Luthayi who has been part of our development programme, and has a very exciting future. We also host a combined Centre of Excellence day today, with Yorkshire and Worcester CofE groups training. Welcome

all, and I hope you have a great experience and a chance to watch the premier 15s game after. We hope that you enjoy today and please come say hello post game in JCs bar.

Bristol Bears made a strong start to the match with Jasmine Joyce marking her return to the Bears line-up with a blistering run from her own 22 for the opening points of the game. Amber Reed slotted the conversion to put the Bears 7-0 ahead in the opening five minutes. The Bears kept hold of the momentum to set up the attack in Lightning’s half once again and slick hands from Alisha Butchers found Joyce out wide to sidestep her way in for her second try of the game. Reed with the boot to extend the Bears lead 14-0. After piling on the pressure in the opening quarter, Lightning turned the tables on the half hour mark to take control. A yellow card for the Bears’ Phoebe Murray for a deliberate knock-on gave the hosts the advantage but a steal from Butchers kept them away from the scoreboard.

Punishing Bristol’s defence, a maul in the visiting 22 and yellow card for hooker Hollie Phillips left the referee running under the sticks to award Loughborough the penalty try to take the lead. Bristol dug in deep in the closing ten minutes to try and finish 2021 with a win. Ploughing their way through the phases in Lightning’s 22 and edging closer to the line, the Bears attack came agonisingly close to powering over for the try. But a spirited

No conversion left the scores 5-14 to the Bears going in at the break. Coming out for the second half, Murray returned from the sin bin but the Bears were still down to 14. But despite being down a player, a stubborn defence from the Bears kept Lightning at bay. But penalties mounting against the Bears soon saw Lightning strike again. Setting up another driving maul off the back of a lineout saw Davies crash over for the second try of the game to put the hosts into double figures.

defensive effort from the home side saw them turn over the ball and clear for the full-time whistle and victory. LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING: TRIES: Lark Davies (2) Penalty try. BRISTOL BEARS WOMEN: TRIES: Jasmine Joyce (2), Conversions: Amber Reed (2)

Saracens Women were founded in 1989 and enjoyed considerable success after their formation including the first ever treble in 1993.

24-20 in the inaugural season of the competition, and made it back-to-back titles against the same opposition last season.

They won four Premiership titles between 2006 and 2009 and went unbeaten during a four year period.

Saracens come to Loughborough top of the table after an impressive 104 – 0 victory over DMP Sharks. This makes for an exciting contest today as Lightning are seeking their first ever victory over Saracens.

In 2014, the club moved from playing home matches at Bramley Road to their new ground Allianz Park and were the first side to play on an artificial pitch alongside a Men’s Premiership team with Saracens Men. The club were crowned the first ever champions of the first ever champions of the Tyrrells Premier 15s when they beat Harlequins Ladies
