DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University for another Allianz Premier 15s Fixture. It’s been a while since we hosted a home game in this competition, but it’s great to be back on our track and we are really looking forward maintaining our current momentum. Today’s match sees us host Sale Sharks at Epinal Way, and a chance to showcase the Women’s game at its highest level. Sale come to Loughborough looking to get a win, having had some great battles over the last few weeks. The Premier 15s this year is proving to be a very competitive league with many teams now capable of beating each other, which shows the growth of the game. It also means we now have to continually ensure that we perform consistently week in week out. This game is going to be another challenge; however, we have a much-changed team compared to when we played in the Allianz Cup in October. We head into this week full of confidence following our strong victory against GloucesterHartpury last week, however we know that we need to raise our accuracy to ensure that we perform. Our first half performance last week was impressive with our forwards and backs sharing the try scoring load. What was pleasing was the variance of how we scored, with Georgie Langham’s cross field kick score winning try of the week. Congratulations must also go to all out Internationals who are now back after the Autumn campaign. The Red Roses in particular looked impressive winning all four games. Additionally, it was great to see Sadia Kabeya, get her first cap after some exceptional performances this season.
Finally, may I please thank Amy Walmsley, who leaves us this weekend to go and work with the RFU. Amy has been an integral piece of the programme over the last 5 years leading our rugby operations and off field delivery. Amy will be sorely missed and will leave a big gap. Sale Sharks Women are a rapidly emerging rugby team competing in the top-flight of domestic women’s rugby – the Allianz Premier 15s – for their second year. Established in 2018, Sale Sharks Women are a critical focus for Sale Sharks as a club. Women’s rugby is one of the fasted growing sports in the world, and Sharks aspire to build the foundations necessary to embody the pinnacle of women’s rugby in the North-West and beyond. So far, Sharks Women is home to several domestic and international stars, directed by world-class coaches including England centurion Katy Daley Mclean MBE and former Wales coach Rachel Taylor. During their first season in the Allianz Premier 15s Sale Sharks
finished 9th in the table with a record of 4 wins and 14 losses. They currently sit 9th in the table at this point in the 21/22 season but all games so far have been close games and try scoring affairs. This is the first meeting of the two sides this season in the league. Their Cup fixture back in October was a resounding 43-15 win for Sale so Lightning will be focussed today on reversing that score line.
