RICHARD ALLEN

DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Loughborough University Stadium for our FA Women’s National League Cup game versus Huddersfield. Two games in a row versus Huddersfield. Last Sunday we travelled up to play them in the FA Cup. With 5 minutes to go and the scores level at 1-1 it looked to be heading towards extra time before the heart break of 2 late goals. Tough to take but we wish Huddersfield the best of luck in their next round tie versus Everton. Today we have the opportunity to make amends and get a result in the League Cup. It’s going to be a tough game but after last week one we believe we can win and progress to the next round. Our Lightning Development team is still doing very well in their league. Last week they travelled to play Nottingham Forest and came away with a fine 2-1 win to put themselves in 3rd position in the FA Reserve Midland Division just behind Forest and ahead of Stoke City and Leicester City Reserves. With new COVID Omicron variant spreading so quickly please could I ask everybody to try and socially distance and to wear face coverings in the lounge areas. Let’s keep each other safe.

We are pleased to welcome the players, supporters and directors of Huddersfield and look forward to what we hope will be an exciting and entertaining game. Richard Allen Director of Football

CAPTAIN New competition, new opponents and a fresh week to go again. Finally, we’re back at home for our last game before Christmas! We’ve had a run of cup games which has been great to pick up wins, score goals, create chances and gain some momentum in our performances and through results. We’re looking forward to welcoming Huddersfield on a reverse fixture this week. Whilst we battled and showed the gritty side of the game, we know we didn’t play the football we’re capable of and we’re looking to do that this weekend. We look forward to welcoming fans to the stadium and are looking forward to working to progress in the league cup before our Christmas break!

TODAYS OPPOSITION

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN FC

The club was formed in June 1988 as Huddersfield Ladies FC and joined the North-East Regional League Division 2 where, in their first season, they won the league Cup and were promoted to Division one as champions. Over the next few seasons there were signs that an exciting team was beginning to emerge and season 1992-3 saw them 3rd in the league and runners-up in the League Cup. At the end of 1992-3 season, Huddersfield Ladies merged with Huddersfield Town Juniors, becoming Huddersfield Town Ladies FC. Season 1993-94 saw the 1st team carry all before them, losing only once all season and winning the League championship, the league cup, the Yorkshire cup. The following season saw the 1st team retain the league championship, winning all 16 league matches and scoring 101 goals in the process. Eventually Town were relegated twice over successive seasons to the Yorkshire and Humberside Premier League. However, in the same period

a lot of time and effort was invested in producing a new crop of talented young players from within our own junior ranks. During the 2006/7 season the first team finished in second place in the first season of the North East Regional Women’s Premier Division. In the 2010/11 season the club won the NERWPL, league and cup double and gained promotion to the Northern Women’s Combination league under the management of Mickey Booth. After 14 years in charge, Mickey decided to step down as first team manager at the end of the 2012/13 season. Three excellent coaches were appointed with Glen Preston as manager, and Ashley Vickers and Fraser Green as his assistants for the 2013/14 season. Their first season in charge couldn’t have gone much better, winning the Northern Women’s Combination league championship by a margin of 8 points and gaining promotion to the FAWPL Northern Division. After Glen left the club in 2016,

Ashley Vickers took on the role of manager and led the team for the next four season in the FAWNL Northern Division. In the Summer of 2019 the club changed their name to Huddersfield Town Women FC. In March 2020, Jordan Wimpenny replaced Ashley as first team manager and before lockdown cut the season short, Town sat six points clear at the top of the division, losing only one league game and progressing to the Women’s FA Cup 5th round for the second time in three seasons. In August 2021, due to a change in his personal circumstances, Jordan stepped down from his role and, for the 2021/22 season has been replaced by the highly experienced Steve Appleton, who will be assisted by Alex Thomas, Sarah Dobby and Luke Haigh (gk coach).

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING FC

A BRIEF HISTORY

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002. For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs. Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.

As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.

15

MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport. The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.

Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.
