RHYS EDWARDS

DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University, where today we host Huddersfield in another Round of National 2 North. Huddersfield will be looking to get a 2nd win of the season, as well as we will be keen to get back to winning ways. Last weeks rearranged game against Stourbridge was great advert to the quality of rugby in the National Leagues. Stourbridge are setting the standard this season, playing a good brand of rugby. There were opportunities for us in the game but it was a lesson in being accurate that set us apart. This week has been a rest week in BUCS Super Rugby, but the BUCS 2 group had big game in their promotion campaign with an impressive win away at Manchester Met. The game saw the score change hands a number of times with the team 26 – 36 down with 5 mins to go. Coming through with 2 late score they won impressively 38 – 36. The focus for this group is to gain promotion back into the BUCS Premiership. The Gallagher Premiership clubs this week go into their Cup Programme, and there are a number of our students involved. It’s great to see our students get the opportunity to play at higher level and gain a valuable experience. This weekend sees Saints (3 players), Wasps (3 Players), Tigers (2 Players), Saracens (1 Player) and Worcester (1 Player). This is on top of Freddie Steward playing for England. Go well lads.

All the best to everyone today Rhys Director of Rugby Rhys Director of Rugby Any further information regarding membership, Please contact rugby@lboro.ac.uk for more information.

Loughborough hosts a rearranged fixture with Stourbridge and with the wind howling, both sides opt for a close-quarters game. The home side started with an early charge leading to a disallowed try. Stourbridge couldn’t handle the speed and agility of the home sides’ backs and whenever Will Trinder took the ball, you could be certain they would penetrate though the away sides’ line.

That said, Stourbridge opened the scoring in the 15th minute via a converted try on the top right-hand cover, followed by another try between the posts for Rodley. Loughborough then capitalised on an away side’s infringement scoring a penalty in the 24th minute. The first half ended with a 23-point difference to the visitors.

Even though Loughborough kept Stourbridge under pressure, Stourbridge scored two additional tries in the 50th & 72nd minute. Although, Loughborough’s Daniel James scored an additional try in the last few minutes of play, it was too little too late. Final score Loughborough Students 22, Stourbridge 38

At the restart, Loughborough were persistent in their efforts and began to turn the tide. The pack dominated, pushing over to score Loughborough’s first try between the posts. Alex Wainwright then made a fine break and went over the for a converted try in the 50th minute. By Ryan Stevens

TODAYS OPPOSITION

HUDDERSFIELD

The town of Huddersfield has a long and proud rugby tradition. Early records show that the game was first played in the town in 1869 with matches first played on the Rifle Field on Trinity Street. Later, in 1879, the club amalgamated with St.John’s Cricket Club and moved to new grounds at Fartown. In 1895 the town was the place where the famous rugby ‘split’ took place. Following a dispute between the RFU and the senior teams from Yorkshire and Lancashire twenty clubs resigned their membership of the RFU and formed the new ‘Northern Rugby Football Union’. Several clubs affected by the breakaway re-formed subsequently and retained the original date of their formation. Not so Huddersfield. a break of 14 years elapsed before a new amateur rugby union club was formed. HRUFC was re-born in 1909 and the club quickly established itself as one of the best in the county. Following the First World War the club played briefly at Salendine Nook before moving to

new grounds at Waterloo which would be home to the club for the next 87 years. New colours of white jersey, with a claret and gold band were adopted and the club grew in strength. Improvements to the grounds at Waterloo were continually made, and the committee also had the foresight to purchase the grounds when the opportunity presented itself which was to prove hugely beneficial! As the century neared its end the club was once again in search of more extensive grounds and better facilities to meet the demands of the modern age. The old junior fields were sold to fund the present club at Lockwood Park, officially opened in 1997 by Sir John Harman the Mayor of Kirklees. Today HRUFC thrives as a multi-sport institution. Three senior rugby teams are run along with a full complement of age grade teams from Under 6’s to Senior Academy. After the departure of former South Africa International, Andre Snyman, shortly after the start of the covid pandemic, Huddersfield have recruited Neil Ryan as the new backs and attack coach. Ahead of the 2021/22 season Huddersfield have made many new signings including former Loughborough Students player Jonny Mason. In July, Lewis Bradley was announced as the new captain of the side and Tom Hodson as vice-captain.

A BRIEF HISTORY 1984 Rex Hazeldine is appointed as Head Coach leading the side to a UAU title and victory in the Leicestershire Cup. A touring Australian Universities side was also defeated.

1976

1919

1962-68

Loughborough College formed the original Rugby Union side in September 1919.

These were spectacular years for Loughborough, winning every UAU title except 1965. Gerald Davies, John Mantle, Dave Rollit, John Taylor, Bev Risman and Colin MacFadyean, became world class players. John Robins became the first British and Irish Lions coach.

1930 Loughborough Colleges competed in their first Universities Athletic Union competition, beating Nottingham University 8-0 in their first match.

1939 Loughborough Colleges reached the UAU final for the first time, losing narrowly to Swansea.

1953 Loughborough Colleges won the UAU for the first time.

Middlesex 7s winners: 1959, 1964 1966, 1970 and 1976.

1996 Loughborough enter the leagues at the bottom of the RFU pyramid.

The Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The team won the UAU in 1977, 1978 and 1979, with the 1978–79 side captained by the young centre Clive Woodward.

17

1970 The legendary Jim Greenwood coaches the Colleges to victory in the Middlesex Sevens, and the first UAU final at Twickenham. This side was probably the strongest ever, with six future internationals, Louis Dick, David Cooke, Clive Rees, Fran Cotton, Steve Smith, and Dick Cowman.

1997 Loughborough wins over Cambridge and Oxford in consecutive weeks signals the changing balance of power in student rugby.

1998 Ian Smith is appointed as the first full-time Director of Rugby.

2003 The World Cup winning England team was coached by six Loughborough alumni: Clive Woodward, Dave Alred, Andy Robinson, Dave Reddin, Phil Larder and Simon Hardy.

2005 Winning BUCS in 2005 breaks our longest spell without a BUCS victory.

2006 Real Varsity Match v Bath. Floodlights Appeal provides campus venue for the first ever rugby ‘event’ and engages alumni leading to the Vice Presidents club. A 3000+ crowd watched Loughborough beat Bath.

2008 Director of Rugby Dave Morris leads the side to promotion into National League 2 North, making the team the first student side to take part in the National Leagues.

2009 The Dan James Memorial Match Loughborough 23 – 20 England U20 A magnificent achievement for Dave Morris’ team and a suitably characterful performance through which to remember Dan.

2012 Loughborough v The Barbarians. A huge match to mark the opening of the Loughborough Stadium. Andy Robinson’s Barbarian side win 40– 7. Loughborough promoted into National League 1.

2016 Fiji win the first Olympic 7s competition coached by Loughborough alumni Ben Ryan, defeating Team GB in the process and fellow Loughborough alumni Phil Burgess.

2017 Loughborough Lightning enter the Tyrrells Premier 15s league.
