RICHARD ALLEN

DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL Good evening and a very warm welcome to the Loughborough University Stadium for our FA Women’s National League (Norther Prem) game versus Derby County. We are currently going through a tough period in terms of results. Our performance at WBA 2 weeks ago was very poor but we picked ourselves up and put in a really good performance away at Burnely. Although the score line would suggest something else, we played well and but for a goal not being given which would have bought us back into the game just after half time, we all believe we could have gone on to win. Derby County come into this game off the back of a good win at Nottingham Forest. In front of a crowd of 4443 at the City Ground, a league record, they won the game 2-0. Currently sitting 3rd in the table they are going to be really tough opposition tonight. Our Development Team currently sit in 5th place in the FA Reserve Midland Division after 4 games. With a game in hand over the 2 teams above us and 3 points off Wolves who currently sit at the top the league we are very pleased with our start. It is with great sadness I have to report the death of our Hockey Programme Coach, Andy Gibson. An extremely talented coach and great guy he will not only be missed by Loughborough Hockey but also the wider Loughborough University family. Our thoughts at this sad and difficult time go out to Andy’s family and friends. As a mark of

respect our players will be wearing black armbands and a period of applause will be held at the start of tonight’s game. We are pleased to welcome the players, supporters and directors of Derby County and look forward to what we hope will be an exciting and entertaining game. Richard Allen Director of Football

CAPTAIN We’re back at home and ready to put in a strong performance. Sunday was tough, we didn’t start the game well and that led us to concede an early goal. However, we fought back and created lots of opportunities to score which we just couldn’t capitalise on. We dominated the game for long periods but at this level if you don’t take those chances it comes back to bite you. We’re looking to put things right starting this evening against derby. This week is a busy one in terms of fixtures and I’m looking forward to seeing the depth and quality of this squad across the next 10 days. As always, we’re delighted to be back at the stadium in front of our home fans, thank you for your continued support.

TODAYS OPPOSITION

DERBY COUNTY FC

Derby County Women was formed in 1990. Since then, the club has grown organically from just one senior team to be easily the largest Girls and Ladies Club in the Derbyshire area, with teams at every age level from U9s upwards. In 2014 the club was chosen as the Charter Standard Development Club of the Year by the Derbyshire County FA and in 2015 and 2018 became FAWPL Club of the Year..

for the first time in the club’s history. This came thanks to a historic 4-2 victory over Crewe in the final league game which was played at Pride Park.

Derby County careers in the academy. The Derby County RTC has also seen a number of talented players graduate through to both the first and development team squads.

The 2018/19 season saw the 1st team finish in a bestever third place in the newly branded FA National League Northern Premier Division under Sam Griffiths in her first season as head coach after a long association with the club as a player. A closer association with the men’s club led to DCFCW playing on Pride Park in a league fixture against Nottingham Forrest for two consecutive seasons, with both attended by a record of over 2000 people.

Every team within the club has a partner, rather than a sponsor, and the relationships we have developed with these partners, including Derby County FC, has seen the club set the foundations for playing at a higher level, and promotion to the Women’s Championship remains our goal.

It was 2008-9 that the 1st team completed a League 6 Cup double to win the Midland Combination League and gain promotion to the FA Women’s Premier League

The club makes excellent provision for junior players to move through the ranks to Open-Age football with over 60% of the current senior team squads starting their

In 2021, the club became a formal stakeholder in Mickleover FC, giving the club a permanent home and the ability to move all its operations including the academy to a brand new 4G pitch and updated facilities as they look to continue upward development.

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING FC

A BRIEF HISTORY

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002. For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs. Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.

As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.

15

MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport. The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.

Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.
