RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University where today we host Chester in another Round of National 2 North. Our last home games in National 2 and BUCS Super Rugby had a good crowd which the players have certainly missed, your support is immensely appreciated.
We welcome Chester back to Epinal way following our narrow defeat to Hull last week. It was another game where we exposed more players to National League rugby, and one that will certainly be a positive experience on their rugby journey. Our opponents will be full of confidence following 2 wins from their last 2 games, picking up maximum points with try bonuses. The BUCS Super Rugby Programme has been in full swing over the last few weeks, with us picking up 2 early wins (Hartpury and Northumbria), and this week our trip to Cardiff Met resulted in an excellent encounter, with a nail-biting finish resulting in a 32-30 loss. This was a great advert for the game and again a great experience for our players. Attention now moves to our home fixture vs Cardiff University next Wednesday, 20th October. It would be great for you to join us. Finally, a reminder of our new club membership model. Thank you for all that have already joined and were on the members call with our staff last week. It was great to be able to speak to you and share more information with you personally.
It would be great to have as many of you as members of our club, and your support would ensure that we continue to develop the next generations of players and staff. Further details are on our website. All the best to everyone today Rhys Director of Rugby

STUDENTS SNATCH VICTORY On the 3rd round of National League 2 North, Loughborough hosted their first home game of the season against Hull Ionians. It was the home side who got off to the better start, dominating the early stages with powerful running by Pope and Warner.
After a successful penalty by Titcombe on the 22’, Loughborough opened up the score board.
HULL IONIANS RUFC Laverick, Stephenson, Bell, Makin, Campbell, Newburn, Sanderson, Sanderson, Kirk, Smith, Britton, Thundercliffe, Minikin, Wilson, Edwards REPLACEMENTS: Morton, Peters, Hudson, Heelas, Evison
Ionians struggled to contend with Loughborough’s pace, which saw Warner breakthrough the away sides’ defensive line, scoring in the top left-hand corner. Ionians returned fire with a try of their own, from a strong carry by Bell. For the rest of the half Loughborough were looking swift and organised in attack, with the forwards charging forward in pods and the backs taking the ball at speed. The home side extended their lead at the end of the half through Pope who picked up the ball on the 39th minute with plenty of space and the speed to make use of it, scoring a converted try. At the restart, Lavin charged down and flopped over to score, which was expertly converted by Titcombe. For the next 20-minutes, Ionians mounted a formidable offensive which took full
advance of any errors on the Student’s side. Their pack dominated, leading to two additional tries on the 65’ and 79’ minute. With only a minute to go, Hull surprisingly took the lead. In the last minute of the game the students produced an incredible performance, leading to Rowntree scoring between the posts, ending the game and giving Loughborough the win.

TODAYS OPPOSITION
CHESTER RUFC
There is evidence that a team from Chester played a game against New Brighton at the end of the 19th century, and that club confirms that such a match appears in their records during the season 1879/80. However, no reference has been found to a Chester Rugby Club prior to 1925 when Chester RUFC was formed under the Chairmanship of Colonel Charles Bromley during a meeting at the YMCA in October of that year. Having played on pitches at both the Racecourse and Bumpers Lane, in 1932 the Club moved to rented facilities at Boughton Hall as tenants of the Cricket Club. Here they stayed for almost 30 years until an old American army camp, along with adjoining fields, at Vicars Cross was purchased and the Club moved there in 1961. The introduction of league rugby for season 1985/6, revitalised Chester rugby and started a new era. Chester were one of ten teams in the inaugural Northwest 1 League and the following season, despite a variable record, were placed in the first official Courage
League, North West Division 1. In 1994 a new clubhouse was built, partly financed by the compensation gained from the A55 Chester by-pass which cut through and separated the ‘bottom pitches’ from the first team pitch and old clubhouse in 1991. In 1998 Chester were promoted from North West 1 to North 2. Two years later another promotion, to North 1, along with another losing Cheshire Cup final (against New Brighton, as in the previous season) gave the Club its most successful season to date. Since the turn of the century Chester has made that final four more times, winning the Cup in 2004. In May, 1st XV head coach Jan Van Deventer announced Harry Wilkinson as Captain the 1st XV side and Harrison Vare will take the vice-captain role. Both have come through the club’s junior section and are well known around the club. Following a 1 point win last week v. Tynedale Chester will be looking for their first away win of the season today here at Epinal Way and with the Students currently 8th, and Chester currently 9th in the table, it’s all to play for.

A BRIEF HISTORY 1984 Rex Hazeldine is appointed as Head Coach leading the side to a UAU title and victory in the Leicestershire Cup. A touring Australian Universities side was also defeated.
1976
1919
1962-68
Loughborough College formed the original Rugby Union side in September 1919.
These were spectacular years for Loughborough, winning every UAU title except 1965. Gerald Davies, John Mantle, Dave Rollit, John Taylor, Bev Risman and Colin MacFadyean, became world class players. John Robins became the first British and Irish Lions coach.
1930 Loughborough Colleges competed in their first Universities Athletic Union competition, beating Nottingham University 8-0 in their first match.
1939 Loughborough Colleges reached the UAU final for the first time, losing narrowly to Swansea.
1953 Loughborough Colleges won the UAU for the first time.
Middlesex 7s winners: 1959, 1964 1966, 1970 and 1976.
1996 Loughborough enter the leagues at the bottom of the RFU pyramid.
The Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The team won the UAU in 1977, 1978 and 1979, with the 1978–79 side captained by the young centre Clive Woodward.
17
1970 The legendary Jim Greenwood coaches the Colleges to victory in the Middlesex Sevens, and the first UAU final at Twickenham. This side was probably the strongest ever, with six future internationals, Louis Dick, David Cooke, Clive Rees, Fran Cotton, Steve Smith, and Dick Cowman.
1997 Loughborough wins over Cambridge and Oxford in consecutive weeks signals the changing balance of power in student rugby.
1998 Ian Smith is appointed as the first full-time Director of Rugby.
2003 The World Cup winning England team was coached by six Loughborough alumni: Clive Woodward, Dave Alred, Andy Robinson, Dave Reddin, Phil Larder and Simon Hardy.
2005 Winning BUCS in 2005 breaks our longest spell without a BUCS victory.
2006 Real Varsity Match v Bath. Floodlights Appeal provides campus venue for the first ever rugby ‘event’ and engages alumni leading to the Vice Presidents club. A 3000+ crowd watched Loughborough beat Bath.
2008 Director of Rugby Dave Morris leads the side to promotion into National League 2 North, making the team the first student side to take part in the National Leagues.
2009 The Dan James Memorial Match Loughborough 23 – 20 England U20 A magnificent achievement for Dave Morris’ team and a suitably characterful performance through which to remember Dan.
2012 Loughborough v The Barbarians. A huge match to mark the opening of the Loughborough Stadium. Andy Robinson’s Barbarian side win 40– 7. Loughborough promoted into National League 1.
2016 Fiji win the first Olympic 7s competition coached by Loughborough alumni Ben Ryan, defeating Team GB in the process and fellow Loughborough alumni Phil Burgess.
2017 Loughborough Lightning enter the Tyrrells Premier 15s league.
