2013 witnessed a surprising number of newbuild marina projects and significant refurbishments despite the fact that equipment providers reported that projects in many geographical areas continued to be on hold. Companies prevailed but it was, without doubt, a tough year for most. Completions of note included Marina Cala Ponte and Marina del Gargano, Italy; Sochi Grand Marina, Russia; Shimei Bay, China; and Riviera Beach City Marina, USA. Many other marinas were regenerated to exceptionally high levels. Examples are plentiful, and include: Limassol Marina, Cyprus; Marina Port Vell, Spain; Itämeren Portii, Finland; Cold Lake Marina, Canada; Harbour at Marina Bay, USA; and Flamenco Yacht Club, Panama. Notable innovation came from Maritime Change, with the Boat-Hive drystack concept, and Poralu Marine with the Mooring Star; a berthing device that enables several boats to use a single pontoon. The need to diversify further concentrated attention on floating structures. Perhaps the most spectacular of all new concepts was The Five Lagoons Projects, an ambitious community and tourism project for the Maldives. Masterminded by Dutch Docklands, it comprises a series of floating islands for residential and tourism use; floating conference and hotel facilities; a floating golf course and an international standard marina. The magical Ocean Flower development, scheduled to open this summer, will feature three types of luxury floating villa – all with private pools and terraces. It may prove to be the most ambitious marina-related floating project of the year. 2014 will see other notable achievements. English Point Marina in Kenya – the first purpose-built marina on the east coast of Africa – will open, as will Oslo’s city centre marina at Akker Brygge, Norway. Pirate’s Cove Marina in Panama City Beach, Florida, will complete its giant drystack and we may, at last, see the first Rotadock drystack in operation – in the UK. Significant phase two completions are scheduled for Riviera Beach City Marina and Porto Montenegro, Montenegro. Greek marinas may find private buyers, and work could start on the new Prince Philip Yacht Haven in the south of England. Dramatic clubhouses and other shoreside support buildings – such as the building planned for Alphaland Marina Club in the Philippines (see p. 40) - will also doubtless continue in the news, becoming ever more sophisticated. As Marina World closed for press in December, Marina Port Vell, Barcelona, revealed its plans for a new architect designed multi-use reception building. Measuring 2,750m² and cloaked in a white concrete skin, it glides out to sea like a cruise liner on a discretely positioned fixed pile platform. Interior designers of note have been appointed to ensure it has fixtures and fittings that would not look out of place in a premium boutique hotel. More on this in the March/April issue. Phase one completes at Qingshui Bay The facility, which is scheduled to have 780 berths and become the largest yacht club in Asia, is surrounded by high-end property and seven fivestar hotels. The club is located on a beautiful 12km stretch of coastline surrounded by two bays. The region is very popular with holiday makers due to its warm climate and clean water.

CHINA: Shenzhen Botongna Yacht Marina Company, builder of over 22 major marina projects in Asia and the Middle East, has completed the first phase of 291 berths at Yajule Qingshui Bay Yacht Club (above) in Qingshui Bay, Sanya. The marina has been created using a floating heavy aluminium pontoon system, designed, built and installed by Shenzhen Botongna. The pontoons are decked with an environmentally friendly, recyclable Wood-Plastic Composite (WPC) material and are of generous width to easily accommodate golf carts.

Berths, which are sized for vessels up to 60.96m (200 feet) in length, are full-service, with 32A, 63A, 125A or 250A Botongna power pedestals as appropriate. Further features include underwater lighting and WiFi.

Botongna claims to be the biggest marina design and build company in China, and Qingshui Bay is the latest completion in a portfolio that includes 352-berth Nansha Yacht Club, a TYHA 5 Gold Anchor marina in Guangzhou; 186-berth Ruiji International Yacht Club in Sanya, Hainan; and 312-berth East Bay International Yacht Club in Hezheng, Huizhou. Projects outside of China include Busan Public Yacht Marina in South Korea, private berths in Bahrain and a fuel dock in Saudi Arabia. Further phases at Qingshui will be completed in due course, according to general manager Kang Chengji. “We are very satisfied with the product and service provided by Botongna and we will continue to cooperate with them in future marina projects,� he said.

Shute Harbour Marina gains approval AUSTRALIA: Shute Harbour’s ambitious $252 million development programme on the Whitsunday coast of Queensland has been approved by Queensland’s CoordinatorGeneral. “We are really pleased with the Coordinator-General’s backing of the project, which is set to deliver a host of benefits to tourists and the local community through significant investment in local infrastructure and jobs,” said project developer Mark Daniels. “By developing an international standard marina precinct that incorporates a range of high quality facilities and community services, Shute Harbour Marina Resort will help attract more visitors and provide a sustained tourism injection to the region.” The resort will include 395 marina berths and associated marina facilities, a hotel comprising 109 suites, a retirement complex with 70 apartments and a managed resort of 49 lots. It will also include a café, restaurant, retail outlets, cyclone shelter and a cultural centre showcasing the history of the indigenous Gia and Ngaro people. Daniels added: “The project will see new boardwalks, look-outs and seating throughout the precinct, while parks and playgrounds will also be established. Roads surrounding the development will be upgraded too. The Shute Harbour Marina Resort is set to become a world-class precinct incorporating resorts, restaurants and retail outlets, plus many other first-rate facilities and services for tourists and the local community to enjoy.”

Pelican Rest Marina nears completion USA: Pelican Rest Marina in Galveston, Texas, has now been completely rebuilt further to the extensive damage it suffered from Hurricane Ike in 2008. The owner was determined to regenerate the facility as a high-end marina catering for larger vessels and create a mixed use upscale complex. The building of the boat slips for Pelican Rest was undertaken over the course of three years. The first phase completed in 2011. In 2012, the owner put the second phase out to tender and awarded Bellingham Marine a contract to supply 3,327 feet of concrete floating

docks. The project was completed in the final quarter last year. The marina now offers boaters fuel, WiFi, dockside power and water, and VIP concierge services. Upland structures are also nearing completion and condominiums are being built.

AUSTRALIA: Following successful completion of the rigorous annual reaccreditation process, Soldiers Point Marina in Port Stephens, NSW, remains the only marina on Australia’s eastern seaboard with the prestigious international Level 4 ISO 14001 Clean Marinas status. Level 4 builds on Levels 1 to 3 of the Clean Marinas Programme established in 2002 by the Marina Industries Association.

Safer moorings at club marina AUSTRALIA: St George Motor Boat Club (above) in Kogarah Bay, Sydney, has completed an expansion project, adding 78 berths for vessels of 8 to 18m. This brings total capacity to 228, making the club marina - which has a 20,000 strong membership base - one of the largest in New South Wales. Bellingham Marine Australia was hired as the design/build contractor for the project and was tasked to provide a turnkey solution including piling, pontoons and utility services. XL

The new system has already survived tests by 50 knot southerlies, according to club president, David Blyth. “The attenuator performed as it was designed to. Even under these extreme conditions, with waves over 1m in Kogarah Bay, the marina was like a mill pond,” he said. Blyth also spoke in praise of the contractors. “We are very pleased with the way Bellingham Marine went about their work with minimal disruption to current parking and berthing. The A$3.5 million development was achieved through five years of hard work and is a credit to the board and club CEO Adrian Vermeulen. As a developer myself, I was impressed with the final result with less than 1% in variation from the original quoted amount,” he commented.

The ICOMIA Marinas Group selected the winning bid, placed by ACOBAR and the Instituto de Marinas do Brasil, at the 50th committee meeting held during the International Boat Show and Festival in Hainan, China. METS 2013 – springboard for optimism “After experiencing some of the hardest economic years in a generation and with many of the world’s marina projects either being postponed or abandoned altogether, there are clear signs of optimism for a strong 2014, with many economies at last poised to burst into life,” says Rolec managing director, Kieron Alsop. This sense of optimism was confirmed by the Rolec team after exhibiting in the Marina & Yard Pavilion (MYP) at METS. “We at Rolec have always felt that METS has long been the springboard for the forthcoming

The second land pier anchors an older live-aboard moorage with 80 slips. The facility offers a wide range of amenities, including in-slip pump outs for all slips and 480A, 3-phase electrical service for power-hungry superyachts. High-speed fuelling is available at the 430-foot fuel dock, the largest in South Florida.

Stock Island Village puts Key West heritage on show

Marina Developer ‘A’ begins with a clean sheet of paper and sees the project as an opportunity to clear away the old and create something new. He gives it a brand name and a logo, but does little else to take advantage of the essential nature of the location. Developer ‘B’ recognises the potential of what is there. He patiently encourages a process that channels the ethos and energy of the community into the project. Robert Wilkes speaks to Matthew Strunk Matthew Strunk is the quintessential Developer ‘B’. Stock Island Marina Village in Florida embraces Key West’s mellow lifestyle and colourful history. Rather than a marina tailored to a narrow market segment, Strunk is creating a Key West experience that appeals across a wide spectrum. “It’s eclectic,” he says. “It’s a big gumbo that appeals to all kinds of people.” Strunk and his team have just completed phase one of a two-phase development in Safe Harbor on Stock Island. The island is the penultimate link in the Florida Keys before Key West.

A new floating concrete dock marina built by Bellingham Marine occupies the east half of the basin. The newly opened moorage features Unifloat docks in a 128-slip configuration with berths ranging from 12m to 21m (40ft to 70ft). Two new side-tie berths welcome superyachts up to 80m (250ft). Safe Harbor is accessed from the Atlantic through a dredged entrance channel 7.6m to 10.6m (25ft to 35ft) deep. The marina basin is divided by two massive land piers cut from solid indigenous limestone and separated by 90m (300ft) of water. At the end of the

These included a 25-slip marina condominium which has since been dissolved to make room for future development, including a planned 80room boutique hotel. The development has 12 acres of upland and 26 acres of bay bottom. Before he decided to develop Stock Island Marina Village, Strunk was a frequent visitor to Key West with a passion for deep-sea fishing. He admits that he started out as Developer ‘A’. “I originally planned to clear the site and build an upscale steel and glass hotel and marina,” he recalls. The 2008 financial crisis and the recession that followed caused him to reconsider. “The original plan doesn’t work today. I hired marina manager Ray Soboski to help me develop a new strategy. He decided that the site had a charm and vitality that could be developed into a compelling visitor experience. “We want to build a working waterfront and interactive museum that turns our real working waterfront into a kind of theatre. We’ll celebrate the history and educate people about the amazing natural resources we have here. For example, we have the only living coral reef in the continental US just outside the harbour.” Visitors and tenants will find a meticulously maintained marina that anticipates their needs. Noticing that many live-aboards owned dogs, they created two well-maintained dog parks for the tenants, one for small dogs and another for large dogs. The property is extensively landscaped with 70% indigenous plants and tropical fruit trees. An organic community garden is provided for live-aboards who want to grow fresh fruit and vegetables. In the 1970s Safe Harbor was home port to more than 300 shrimp boats. While commercial fishing has diminished over the years, three permanent and 20 seasonal shrimp boats still operate from the harbour. To revitalise the commercial fishing heritage of the harbour, Strunk plans to build a ‘fish house’ to receive and distribute locally-caught seafood including a small retail trade. He also

plans a museum and interpretive centre. “We want our marina village to be an attractive and interesting place for all kinds of people who come to Key West,” he confirms. Key West is the heart and soul of the Florida Keys, and the marina is only six miles from Duval Street. Key West is where Hemingway wrote A Farewell to Arms, Audubon created some of his spectacular bird paintings and Jimmy Buffet lit up the charts with ‘Margaritaville’. Key West is a national treasure that attracts millions of tourists every year. President Truman had his winter White House here, and cruise ships make port calls nearly every day. The town is a magnet for adventurers and eccentric characters. Strunk understands that soulful places like Key West can’t be built, they coalesce organically over time. He studied Sausalito and Cannery Row in California. Cannery Row has a commercial fishing tradition similar to Stock Island and now draws visitors from all over the world. “I read everything I could about Key West,” says Strunk. “I read the local newspaper every day for three years. Ray Soboski helped me see the site as a living seaport, not just a marina. We approached the fishermen and live-aboards for ideas. A shrimp boat owner invited us home for dinner and we learned about the history of Safe Harbor. There were once so many shrimp boats you could walk across the harbour on them. We learned our marina used to be the

A classically-trained horticulturalist, he is planting key lime, cashew and avocado trees, and plans to have 20 varieties of mango. Other trees provide edible seeds for migrating bird populations. Guinea fowl live in a specially-constructed fowl house and control the insect population. Two rambunctious peacocks patrol the property. Stotts is erecting an osprey nest complete with video monitoring. “Our environmental work has intrigued visitors and won us a lot of respect,” he says.

When the city of Sochi, one of the biggest and most beautiful resorts on the Russian Black Sea coast, hosts the 22nd Winter Olympic Games in February this year, a brand new marina will be in place to welcome guests. Sochi Grand Marina, a full-service facility with up to 250 berths for vessels of 12 to 50m has been built in a disused cargo port that is also home to a new cruise ship terminal. The marina, which is the biggest in the south of Russia, was constructed by SF Marina Rostov in cooperation with SF Marina Black Sea Region under licence from SF Marina International of Sweden. High-end superyacht moorings were designed, built and installed by Marinetek SPB of St Petersburg, Russia, a subsidiary of Marinetek Group, Finland. SF installed its all-concrete Type SF100 pontoons with timber lookalike decking. Renowned for stability, durability and reliability, SF100 is low in maintenance, kind to the environment and very versatile owing to the patented connector system that has been developed by SF for all its concrete pontoons. All SF units were manufactured in

Rostov between early 2013 and August 2013. All berths are full service courtesy of Plus Marine power pedestals. Marinetek chose its top of the range concrete pontoons to create 180m of superyacht mooring. All pontoons were shipped from pontoon types. Soon after its long-awaited opening last summer, Ben Eoin Marina in Nova Scotia, Canada, was at full occupancy. The success was credited to the determination of the community group involved and the design and planning skills of its chosen contractor Structurmarine. Set within the scenic rolling hills of Cape Breton Island, Ben Eoin Marina lies on Bras d’Or Lake – the world’s largest inland body of salt water. Its protected coves and panoramic views attract sailors from around the globe but relatively harsh weather conditions and limited financial resources nonetheless created challenges for a new-build marina. In order to make best use of the four-acre basin space within the 14-acre facility, the marina was equipped with an

82-berth floating dock system. Seventytwo berths are leased seasonally and the remainder reserved for visitors. Boats of 30 to 60ft are accommodated at five 8ft wide fendered piers, which are connected to the shore via an access ramp. The docks are designed to remain in the water year-round and withstand 75mph winds. Both a flexible rope, chain and deadman anchoring arrangement and an A-arm system were used to secure the docks and enable them to withstand harsh Atlantic coast weather.

The complexity of building a marina from scratch proved daunting. Stretching limited resources, satisfying regulations and meeting timelines presented challenges throughout the four-year project. “We had little or no experience,” explained Robert Sampson, chairman/president of the non-profit marina group. “We needed to find partners who could be trusted to provide the best advice and the lowest cost. Structurmarine understood this and worked hard to get the marina done on time and within budget.” Important suggestions were also implemented with regard to aspects such as decking. Originally, the plan called for traditional timber decks “because we simply assumed we could not afford an alternative system,” Sampson said. But with Structurmarine’s design advice, durable and low-maintenance composite wood decking was put in place. “The decking’s clean lines look great. Our docks have been in the water for a year now and are likely the most impressive part of the marina,” he continued. Award-winning resort sets new marina standard in Bahrain

Durrat Marina is set to be the largest marina in Bahrain and the first of its scale to be built in the Middle East. Located within the US$4 billion Durrat Al Bahrain resort complex in the town of Durrat, an hour from the capital Manama on the southern coast of the country, the 700,000m³ marina stretches across three manmade islands in the crystal clear waters of the Gulf. The development aims to bring together the contrasting lifestyles of island and city, desert and sea, holiday and home. It has been created across a cluster of 11 islands – five petals and six atolls – and will host over 2,000 beachfront villas, 3,600 executive apartments and offices, a luxury hotel and spa resort, parks and entertainment precincts, mosques and international schools, premier retail malls and restaurants, a 400-berth marina and an Ernie Els-designed 18hole championship golf course.

The ‘pearl’ of Bahrain, Durrat Al Bahrain is a US$4 billion joint development owned by the Government of Bahrain and the Kuwait Finance House (Bahrain). The development was master planned and designed by Atkins, the world renowned design, engineering and consultancy firm. KMC Bovis is the project development management firm for the project. In October 2012, Poralu Marine won the contract to build the marina and delivered five months later. Poralu was selected for its top-of-the-range longlife products, technical expertise and design skills, and produced the entire marina installation in accordance with the specific architectural characteristics of the site.

Building the marina When constructing the marina, Poralu designed curved floating stages that were carefully adapted to the rounded shape of the jetties. The central walkway gives access to 340m of 2.5m wide pontoons, separated into six secondary walkways. The entire structure is equipped with 35 fingers of different lengths (9m x 0.95m, 12m x 0.95m and 24m x 0.95m).

When construction is complete, the marina will have a 44m x 3m maintenance pontoon, a 40m x 3m coastguard pontoon and a 36m long x 3m wide fuel dock with gangway. The marina will be accessible by two 9 x 2.4m gangways. Kochi spurs marina plans for India India’s first commercial marina, Kochi International, has established itself as a small but select international boating hub. Charlotte Niemiec invites Simon Murthaty, vice president of marinas and projects at marine company Ocean Blue, to talk shop. After seven years of planning and construction, India now boasts a 36-berth marina on the eastern coast of Bolgatty Island, close to the international maritime route on the south west coast of the Indian Peninsula. According to Murthaty, the success of the marina lies in its location: “The potential of this marina stems from the fact that, even without a marina, numerous luxury yachts call at Kochi every year, en route from the Gulf/West Asia region to destinations in the Far East and vice versa.” The area has good ambience throughout the year with minimum tidal variation. Kochi city itself is a popular tourist destination with a world-class natural port and international airport. The average length of boat at Kochi Marina is 35ft, but it accommodates boats up to 80ft. It has a 70/30 ratio of sail to power. The marina was developed using an aluminium floating

pontoon system, built to international standards and secured by piles. It has PWC decking, polyurethane floats and PVC fendering. Equipped with international quality service pedestals, the marina offers a combination of 16 and 32 amp shore power sockets, LED lights and fresh water supply outlets. Amenities and hospitality services include storage space, bathroom facilities, the exclusive Bolgatty Palace Resort, a 24-room marina house, restaurant and bar, swimming pool and spa, and a nine-hole golf course. By design, the marina does not have a boatyard or boat hoists. Murthaty explains: “Since Kochi International Marina has been set up on the backdrop of the beautiful Bolgatty Palace Resort, the tourism department did not want to earmark a boatyard or workshop in the immediate vicinity of the marina. All haul-outs are outsourced to nearby yards.”

Simon Murthaty (inset) believes it is a key element in the growth of ‘a sunrise boating industry.’ Security is taken seriously at Kochi, even though “security has not proven to be a major concern” due to its relatively small size and the fact it is restricted to the public. Security personnel are posted at the main gate and throughout the marina. The marina manager, along with other ancillary staff, is present at the marina office during opening hours to oversee daily operations. In terms of safety equipment, the marina has mobile fire caddies, fire pedestals and a control tower installed to deal with an emergency situation. Murthaty’s involvement in building India’s first marina was, for him, not just a personal achievement but a proud milestone for the Indian boating industry. Ocean Blue is India’s largest boating group, with diverse interests across dealerships, charters, water sports, marina development and management, yacht management services and interests in leisure and commercial boat manufacturing. Plans to build a marina in India began in 2006, when Ocean Blue was in its nascent stages. At that time, discussions centred on which Indian state would host the first commercial marina. In 2008, the tourism department of the southern state of

TALKING SHOP With deep water and generous manoeuvring space, Kochi is perfect for large yachts. When the market is ready, extra berths for superyachts may be added. Kerala initiated a marina development bid at Kochi, which was awarded to Gulf Marinas and subcontracted to Ocean Blue. Design planning began in 2008 and an expert team began work on the project. Murthaty explains it took approximately six months to put the geotechnical surveys, designs and production plans in place. Due to a government decision, construction work on the project did not begin when originally scheduled but eventually started towards the end of 2009. The marina was fully established and operational within six months. The marina’s location once again proved in its favour; Kochi has a naturally sheltered backwater channel with no wave action, current or hightidal fluctuations, making planning and construction relatively simple and straightforward. This channel was already being used by transient yachts and boats visiting Kochi. Additionally, the newly built container terminal in Kochi used the same channel for access, providing the opportunity to develop clearer guidelines for visiting boats. Ocean Blue joined the project because it “understood the importance of on-water infrastructure development.” Murthaty believes waterfront developments are “a key driving force in the growth of a sunrise boating industry.” He continues: “We felt it was of prime importance to introduce the concept of marinas in India and demonstrate the ease of embarkation and disembarkation, as well as the

various surrounding facilities it can host to make owning a boat hassle-free. With this in mind, Ocean Blue installed a temporary floating pontoon system in Mumbai at the historic Gateway of India in February 2007 alongside the first Mumbai International Boat Show.” Murthaty is delighted with international response to Kochi Marina. “During the first year, we had an overwhelming response of 70% occupancy [in 2010 and 2011] followed by an equally successful first half in the second year.” Nevertheless, there are problems. “In the last year and a half, numbers have dropped considerably due to the prevailing pirate threat. We expect the situation to improve now that the government, Indian Navy and, more importantly, the coastal security agencies of various international governmental organisations are focusing their expertise on securing the area.” The success of Kochi Marina has spurred further marina proposals in India. The Maharashtra Tourism

Development Corporation (MTDC) proposes to build a 150-berth marina at Nariman Point, the premier business district in Mumbai (see Marina World, September/October 2013). The marina will be designed specifically for transient boats and is part of an ongoing campaign to boost tourism. The marina at Kochi is also expected to expand and develop. Murthaty explains: “We hope the marina will upgrade to its Phase II plan to accommodate more boats of larger sizes. Additionally, we are looking at setting up services at the marina, such as water sports, charters, learn-to-sail programmes, power boating courses etc., all devised to promote the industry as a whole.” He continues: “While we are hoping to attract a larger number of bigger yachts, the dredging at the channel and the marina is under the control of the tourism department. Assuming that we have a larger demand for superyachts, the department may look into tackling the dredging issue, after which the marina could potentially accommodate even larger yachts than is possible at this time.” Kochi Marina is, as yet, the only completed commercial marina in the country. Nevertheless, Murthaty sees enormous potential in India: “The leisure boating industry in India is slowly evolving and upward trends have been noticed in the number of boats and boating related activities. India is poised to be the last large leisure boating market in the world. With a young population, expendable income and a beautiful coastline, the boating industry has all the right ingredients to flourish.” Sail boats dominated the marina when occupancy levels were high in 2010/11.

Plans began to rebuild the 350-berth marina and, in September, the first shipment of docks arrived for construction. Limassol Marina is the first redeveloped marina to complete in Cyprus. It has 650 berths and facilities for megayachts up to 115m in length.

Renovations of note were also news in storm-free zones. On the west coast, the prestigious Harbour at Marina Bay in Marina del Ray, California, reopened in May after extensive renovation by Bellingham Marine. It now features a total of 207 single berth slips and 11 end ties for boats of 22 to 90 feet. The City of Riviera Beach in Palm County, Florida, opened phase one of its newly revamped City Marina, completed by Marinetek North America. Benedict Industries announced plans for Georges Cove in Sydney. Approval is sought for a marina with 186 wet berths and a 250-boat drystack. Portland Harbour Marina in Portland, Victoria, and Kingston Harbour Marina – a key part of an urban renewal project on the shore of Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin – were completed by Superior. Both have M-Tech power pedestals. Off the coast of Australia, in Fiji, Vuda Point Marina entered its first phase of development as a luxury superyacht facility attached to a purpose-built manmade island.

2013 saw several industry collaborations. MDL signed a new agreement with the Public Ports of Andalusia to assist boaters wishing to visit ten marinas in the region and boosted its cruising network by joining forces with French marina operator Sagemor. The two schemes now allow berth holders to visit more than 80 marinas in the UK, France, Spain and Italy. The Polish Sailing Route was completed - a new scenic waterway from Germany to the Baltic Sea and Scandinavia that passes through 21 modern marinas. Short leases are viewed as more likely to encourage investment and longer leases to lead to neglect. Whether spur or stumbling block, there is no question that regional marinas make the best of the granted concessions and place a strong emphasis on ‘quality’; a factor close to the ASNAUGA president’s heart. Club Nautico de Portonovo was established with an extension option in August 1992 and any limit with regard to the length of lease has far from hampered its development into an active club. The marina has 203 berths for boats of 6 to 20m, a 450m² twostorey clubhouse with many facilities,

It is also certified as a ‘Q’ marina. “We’ve been instrumental in the development of Q – a quality rating system for marinas now operating throughout Spain. Q was ratified by law in October 2010 and, of the 16 marinas that have earned the certification, ten are in Galicia,” Cortazar Díaz confirms. “The key factor is that marinas should offer far more than quality berthing and have top services, attractions etc., and we are delighted that, having established Q in Spain, it is now being used as a framework for the ISO European Marina Standard currently under development.” Developing Q was perfectly in line with ASNAUGA’s mission to help promote nautical tourism when it set out in February 2003 with 16 founding marina members. It now has 18 member marinas with 5,000 of the region’s 12,000 berths. The average ASNAUGA member has 300 berths, the largest (Ribadeo) has 700 and the smallest just 80. The most popular boat size is 8 to 9m and power dominates over sail at around 55%. “Galicians enjoy boating and marinas currently have high levels of occupancy – around 80%. Before the recession all available berths were fully occupied – that translates as 90% as, by law, 10% of berths at an appropriate ratio of sizes must be reserved for visitors,” Cortazar Díaz explains.

There are two ways to obtain a berth in Galicia: by long term lease (a ‘sold’ berth usually lasts for the entire length of the concession) and on annual or seasonal basis. Seasonal berthing has become more popular due to the recession but ‘sold’ berths still represent 60% of the total. Marinas in Galicia are lively places and berths tend to be promoted as destination packages with marketing emphasis on all that this special corner of Spain has to offer: temperate climate, secluded beaches, quality restaurants, historic cities, lush green forests and a majestic coastline divided by scenic estuaries called ‘rias’ of deep, clean, protected water. The region is a haven for nature lovers and watersports enthusiasts. In tune with both land and sea,

Galicians have traditionally turned to farming the fertile soil and fishing near and far for their livelihood. Agriculture still plays its part in the hinterland but Galicia now also enjoys international status for commercial fishing, shipbuilding and car manufacture. Around 1,400 cars a day, for example, are built at the Peugeot/Citroën factory in Vigo and loaded onto cargo vessels amidst the busy working waters around Marina Davila. lift services to 70 tonnes. “The marina is split 60:40 between local occupancy and visitors,” says general manager Carlos Gago Conde. “Ten per cent of the berths are sold and the remainder are on annual lease.” The marina boasts a 236m long megayacht pier with high freeboard for alongside mooring of 28 to 150m+ vessels. It also has several berths with fingers for vessels up to 30m. The average depth throughout the marina is 20 to 25m; 12m at its shallowest. All berths are full service and the marina has its own transformers for 240V (single phase) and 400V (triple phase) power. Berth holders have access to a first class Michelin-starred restaurant, full concierge service, terrace bar and fuel dock but particular emphasis is also placed on practical measures. “All the docks are extra wide so that we can use golf carts throughout the site,” explained megayacht coordinator, Joaquín Fernández-Davila. “We also installed sidelines on the mooring system to protect yachts from the dock. The fenders don’t rub against the paintwork.”

It offers covered space for fewer than 100 boats up to 10m,” Cortazar Díaz says. “People don’t really understand the concept – and there is plenty of harbour space for small boats,” he adds.

MYP 2013: refreshing, busy, focused

Over 30 companies that grouped together at METS 2013 (Amsterdam, 19th-21st November) in the Marina & Yard Pavilion (MYP) gave their specialist ‘marina village’ a vote of confidence. Stephane Millot of R-Marina (France) spoke of a strong level of surprisingly international enquiries and Nigel Draper of Maricer (UK) summed up by referring to good enquiries. “We’re quoting for contracts,” he said. David Veyrat-Durebex of Sikoo (France) who shared a stand with Den Hartog Industries (USA) said both companies had received interesting leads. “It has been better than last year [2012],” he said. “We met a lot of people with real interest.” Holly Brown, operations director at Rolec (UK) was equally positive. “The MYP certainly allowed us to capture the right quantity and quality of visitor to our stand. The mix of the catering and social area along with the pavilion stage events provided a relaxed yet business-driven environment.” Paul Fletcher, Dura Composites (UK) also stressed the quality of the visitors. “It was refreshing to meet visitors with genuine interest,” he said. “We had a lot of enquiries about our products and we signed up a Benelux distributor at the show.” Jos Karstens at JLD (Netherlands) spoke enthusiastically about the high level of organisation and good attendance, and Lucille Lasalle of second-time exhibitor Structurmarine (Canada) was very pleased with the level of visitors. “We were most

surprised to greet potential customers from the five continents,” she said. Carlo Stella of Martini Alfredo (Italy) reported a positive show, as did firsttime exhibitor Next (South Korea), and Clive Kemp at Walcon (UK) was enthusiastic about the venue. “It really worked,” he said. “There was a positive atmosphere. It was a good place to be.” Gary Sutcliffe, LeeStrom (Germany) described the MYP as ‘the only place to find all that is excellent in the world of marina facilities’. “The top companies are all in one place allowing potential customers to find them easily and spend time talking to them in relaxed

When Juan Pereiro sold Dinak, a company that specialises in industrial chimneys and ventilation towers, his family reckoned he would spend much of his hard earned retirement aboard his boat. If friends were available to join him for time out on the water all was well but, if alone, he soon encountered the frustration of not being able to handle his boat at the marina berth without someone to help. Having developed the Dinak products, Pereiro had a sound industrial background and was an inventor by nature. He relished the challenge of finding a workable, safe, attractive solution to his mooring problem and turned his attention to developing a single-handed docking system. A prototype came first. A revised version came second. Then a patent, further development and meticulous attention to the quality of every material needed for the system. Eventually, with a new company Silkus, and the input of his daughter, Silvia Pereiro Piay as CEO and his son Julián Pereiro Piay as commercial director, Juan Pereiro was ready to release the ‘oneSailor’ system to the marina industry.

The system

The product is suitable for vessels of 5 to 20m (16 to 65ft) in length and comes in two versions; for stern mooring or bow mooring. Both systems can be attached to floating pontoons (with or without fingers) or to fixed docks. Three sizes (small, medium and large) are offered to suit the length of boat. Finger fenders of expandable length are also available.

Materials and manufacture OneSailor is manufactured using the highest quality materials, and accessories have been specially selected to withstand harsh weather conditions and UV rays. The working process of the oneSailor bow system has been certified by TECNITAS (Bureau Veritas) for use with recreational and fishing vessels.

OneSailor is a simple yet ingenious device that is attached to the edge of a pontoon to enable the skipper of a motor boat to enter or leave a berth without the help of crew or marina staff. The completed product is then transported to Silkus headquarters in Mos near Vigo and is shipped out via UPS to destinations worldwide. Pensacola yard installs new lift Pelican’s Perch Marina & Boatyard, a 50-year-old family run facility in Pensacola, Florida, has ordered a 50-ton Marine Travelift to further boost its haul-out services. Custom designs for new projects XL pedestals from M-Tech have been installed at 228-berth St George Motor Boat Club (below) in Kogarah Bay, Sydney, Australia (see World News). The marina, which was recently expanded by Bellingham Marine Australia, features a curved 4m wide attenuator for protection against 1m waves and 50 knot southerly winds. The pedestals were selected for water and electricity supplies because of their robust construction and ability to withstand this often harsh environment. Neptune pedestal launched at METS

UK company Maricer launched the Neptune service pedestal in the Marina & Yard Pavilion at METS last November. The unit has many features and is of semi-recessed design for a sleek and stylish look. Able to accommodate a broad range of services including electricity, water (within a separate compartment), TV, telephone and internet, it has socket outlets of up to 250 amp, ½, ¾ and 1 inch water outlets and an LED lighting option. Electricity and water are metered with computer or Smartcard control options. Cabinets are available in powder coated aluminium or stainless steel. The company received good response to the new product at METS, and Maricer sales engineer Nigel Draper promised more innovation for the future. “We are looking to expand our portfolio and also rebrand some

of our existing lines,” he told Marina World. “There are more new models in the pipeline for release in coming months.” By the close of METS, Maricer had many enquiries to process and confirmed a show order for 53 of its Europa pedestals with 16 amp outlets and LED lighting. Suntex chooses Pacsoft NG US marina management company, Suntex Marinas, has selected Pacsoft NG to operate and control its fast-growing marina and boatyard properties. Chris Booth, Suntex vice president of information technology, said the company had chosen the product because it was innovative, gave a quality-scaled visual view of the marina and was easy to use but sophisticated. “With 19 properties and growing, we need a rapid deployment and centralised IT infrastructure to minimise our support needs,” he added. Suntex elected to use Pacsoft with the highly rated VMware VDI (virtual desktop) infrastructure. This is proving successful in enabling the company to meet its target of implementing the management system across its portfolio in time for this year’s boating season. In order to achieve this, Suntex

is launching Pacsoft at two marina properties per month.
