METS will be buzzing again for 2014 with over 20,000 visitors expected and in excess of 1,300 exhibiting companies. Highlights of the three day event include the kick start Breakfast Briefing, which this year features an industry keynote address by Carla Demaria, president of Monte Carlo Yachts, and the annual DAME Awards presentation. The DAME (Design Award METS) is the world’s most prestigious design competition for new marine equipment and accessories and, year on year, the marina equipment sector is under represented! If you are exhibiting at METS and have an innovative new marina product, why not enter it for the DAME? Online applications should be made on www.metstrade.com by 19th September 2014. The Marina & Yard Pavilion (MYP) is a must-visit at METS for marina professionals. Solely dedicated to marina equipment and service providers, it has emerged as a niche market show-within-a-show and in 2013 received a strong vote of confidence from its 30+ exhibitors, many of whom return to join new exhibitors for 2014.

The bulk of participants last year were eager to stress the quality of the marina-specific visitors and the huge geographical range of attendees. The verdict was busy, focused and global. We look forward to an expanded pavilion for 2014 and, as official media partner for the MYP, will be delighted to welcome you to the Marina World stand EF02.

Gyeonggi Province is the owner of the Korea International Boat Show, which started in 2007. Under Korea’s National Marina Development Plan, 17 new marinas providing berths for over 4,200 boats have been developed. Premier buys Endeavour Quay UK: Premier Marinas has purchased the Gosport specialist boatyard business Endeavour Quay from Marina Projects. The property sits adjacent to Premier’s Gosport Marina and offers one of the largest boatyard facilities on the south coast of England. Founded by Marina Projects in 2006, the yard is a highly successful venture that has served an international market. It has hosted Volvo Ocean Race teams, Open 60s including Alex Thomson’s Hugo Boss, the Clipper Round the World Race yachts, J-Class yachts in the Admiral’s Cup fleet, tall ships, various superyachts and more. Premier Marinas, which owns eight of the most prestigious marinas in England, has bought the yard as part of ongoing expansion and development plans. Premier CEO, Pete Bradshaw, described the purchase as a fantastic addition. “It significantly increases the offering to our berth holders and visitors and fits neatly alongside our Portsmouth Harbour marina operation with Gosport and Port Solent,” he said.

Bridge Pointe installs all-new timber docks USA: Bridge Pointe Marina in New Bern, North Carolina, has a new lease of life with new docks, upgraded facilities and amenities, and an improved overall layout. The new docks, designed and manufactured by Bellingham Marine, reflect the latest in timber dock technology, featuring ipe hardwood decking framed by southern yellow pine walers. “A marina’s dock plays a big part in a boater’s overall impression of a facility,” said marina manager, Jesse Schmucker. “We wanted the docks at Bridge Pointe Marina to echo our commitment to quality and to providing our boaters with a first class experience.” The marina has capacity for 125

vessels at full-service slips. Finger piers range from 33 to 70ft in length and sidetie moorings can accommodate vessels up to 150 feet. The marina’s deep water basin and location at the confluence of the Trent and Neuse rivers makes it an ideal location for local and visiting boaters. Aside from the waterside improvements, the marina owners also redesigned and renovated the boaters’ lounge area. The new building includes showers, toilets, laundry and an air conditioned sitting room.

Northland Port buys Marsden Cove Marina NEW ZEALAND: Northland Port Corporation has purchased 230-berth Marsden Cove Marina and its adjoining commercial complex from Hopper Developments for $6.9 million. The transaction covers freehold title to a 6.2 hectare area comprising the 4.5 hectare marina and 1.7 hectares of land and infrastructure. The latter includes commercial and retail space, and a two-storey building which houses the marina office and berth holder facilities. The agreement excludes any of the residential land associated with the neighbouring Hopper Developments’ housing estate at Marsden Cove. Northland Port Corporation’s chief executive, Graham Wallace, said ownership of the marina would help the company open up a ‘second front’ of development on the adjacent land that it owns. He also said that ownership of the marina’s freehold title was a significant differentiator as other marinas were almost invariably operating under some form of leasehold title. This would give the company the ability to respond quickly to market demand, adding value to the infrastructure already in place by developing it to maximise appeal to boat owners and businesses wanting to establish themselves there.

“The opportunity exists to make Whangarei Harbour in general and Marsden Cove Marina, in particular, the destination of choice for long-distance yachties arriving in and departing from New Zealand,” Wallace noted. He also sees the marina as an attractive option for local boat owners seeking a mooring close to a major centre but with easy access to and from Auckland. Potential future development opportunities identified by the company include a vessel haul-out facility, drystack, marine chandlery and a wide range of servicing facilities.

Marinas planned for Labuan BORNEO: According to reports in The Borneo Post, two marinas are planned for the island of Labuan off the coast of the state of Sabah. The first involves turning the northern part of the island into a lagoon and creating a ‘marina city’ with waterpark and resort. The second initiative is to build a marina in front of the Tiara Labuan Hotel. All land involved is government owned.

Marinas with benefits AUSTRALIA: Independent research carried out for the Marina Industry Association (MIA) by the Michigan State University based Recreation Marine Research Center has highlighted a wide range of benefits that marinas deliver to local communities.

The report is based on a 47% sample of the country’s 347 commercial, club and government operated recreational marinas. During the 2012/13 period the total gross revenue generated by Australian marinas (including tenants’ revenues but excluding contractors) was $1.4 billion or $4.1 million per marina. Marinas were big employers, with 19,200 working at marinas including contractors. Australian marinas provide 69,000 boat storage spaces for an estimated 7% of all Australian boats but storage is not the major source of income for all marinas. The report indicates that 54% of marinas, for example, now provide restaurant or food and beverage facilities. enhancement of facilities and technologies, and increasingly played host to wide ranging community events. By measuring Andrew Chapman economic, employment, social, recreational and environmental contribution, the research indicates that marinas are making a valuable contribution to Australian society. MIA president, Andrew Chapman, said: “It is clear marinas can play an even more significant role in assisting the growth of healthy communities if they are appropriately acknowledged in government plans and policies and provided with appropriate investment and community support.” The 2013 Health of the Australian Marina Industry Survey is available for purchase on www.marinas.net.au

Charge less, earn more ITALY: In line with government policy to reduce Value Added Tax (VAT) for hospitality businesses, rates of VAT at marina resorts in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia Romagna and Liguria have been reduced from 22% to 10%. A survey undertaken by UCINA’s National Nautical Observatory has revealed that the reduced taxation now imposed on visiting yachtsmen will boost traffic and actually increase VAT proceeds by six times the previous amount. UCINA – the Italian marine industry association – has been instrumental in liaising with national and local government institutions with a view to making stopovers and stays at marina resorts more convenient in Italy. In addition to the crucial VAT reduction, arrival and departure procedures have been simplified and non-EU yachts can now clear Customs without the need to enter the national registers. An ‘occasional lease’ as opposed to a more complicated ‘commercial lease’ is also now available when chartering vessels under the Italian flag. Data indicates that the charter business increased in Italy in 2014. UCINA president, Massimo Perotti, is pleased with the result. “Making stopovers more convenient in Italian marinas means that a greater number of boats use related facilities and more people can enjoy the wonders of Italy’s coast at competitive prices,” he said.

Dockominium owners move boats back to slips USA: After more than a year of paying rent in neighbouring marinas, the slip owners at Olde Naples Seaport in Naples, Florida, were finally able to return their boats to their slips. In November 2012, the boats were relocated to allow for a massive facility overhaul. The docks were removed in December and slip owners expected to move back in by June. Unfortunately, the selected dock no docks were in place as late as manufacturer was reportedly unable July 2013. The marina contracted to meet contractual obligations and Bellingham Marine to install a system in

the empty basin. Bellingham delivered the last of the docks in November 2013 and boats moved in between January and March this year. The new docks sit on the same footprint as the original system but feature higher freeboard, longer main walk modules, single piece fingers and utility raceways. The marina accommodates 30 boats of an average length of 60 feet but has capacity for vessels double this length. Olde Naples Seaport was one of the first dockominum projects in the USA and the marina is owned by the slip holders.

MARINA FOCUS Abell Point Marina, a stunning facility set in the midst of electric blue waters, is being redesigned to attract a wider variety of visitors.

Abell Point restyled as ‘destination marina’ Long regarded as a major gateway to the Whitsundays, Abell Point Marina has recently undergone a multi-million dollar transformation with a view to becoming the area’s most vibrant marina precinct. The marina offers state-ofthe-art facilities and luxury conveniences for the boating community. Charlotte Niemiec gives an update Secure in the electric blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef and with direct access to Airlie Beach, Abell Point is the site of the largest marina complex in Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands and one of the largest in Australia. Surrounded by its famous island landscape – which includes Whitehaven Beach, Heart Reef and the Hamilton and Hayman Islands – the location of the marina has proven popular for both boaters and divers. Boaters enjoy exploring the Whitsundays’ protected bays and inlets while divers can swim among a diverse range of underwater reefs. Revitalising an already wellestablished marina was always going to be a challenge, but it was a challenge relished by Paul Darrouzet, who purchased the marina in March 2013. Having visited the area for over 26 years, Darrouzet witnessed the slow deterioration of the marina and the lost opportunity. Through a mixture of enthusiasm, cooperation and investment, the marina is making its name once again as the prize of the Whitsundays. A talented team was assembled

to reassess Abell Point’s offerings. Starting, in a sense, from scratch, the team first addressed the name of the marina. It decided to restore the original ‘Abell’ name, in recognition of the Abell family that originally settled in Airlie Beach in 1904. Due to clerical mishap, the second ‘l’ in the name had been dropped, resulting in the misspelling of road signs, maps, charts and the marina itself for over 100 years. Construction of the marina – the first in the area – truly began in 1988 and consisted of the north breakwater and one jetty. A quarter of a century later, the state-of-the-art marina is setting the standard for marinas across the globe.

and Jetty Specialist pontoons in the south. Each slip had fresh water and shore power. Berths had both single and three-phase power available from Comsen and Patron Power dock pedestals, with power ranging between 34 amp, 64 amp and 125 amp. Fuel offerings included diesel (80, 100 and 400 litres per minute flow rate), outboard fuel and LPG. The marina was well equipped to accommodate superyachts, with over thirty 30m berths, ten 40m berths and two 60m berths. A dockhand service was available to cater specifically for superyacht requirements. The Whitsundays has proved to be a popular destination on the east coast for the migration of superyachts and Abell Point Marina has historically been active in attracting them. Furthermore, the marina hosted a sewage pump-out facility; 24-hour CCTV, security and swipe access; private, gated berthing; wireless internet network access; and secure car parking. Situated in the northern section of the marina complex were a number of bareboat charter companies, marine service providers (sailmaker, diesel mechanic, refrigeration, engineering, electronic and electrical services, chandlery), dive shop and bottle shop. The privately-run Hawkes Boatyard is also run out of the marina and can lift out vessels up to 70 tons for maintenance. Well maintained pontoons offer a total of 507 wet berths for vessels of 11 to 60m.

Impressive from the start Before redevelopment, Abell Point was already home to an impressive array of facilities. Protected by a large, north-facing, cyclone-rated rock wall, vessels are safe from southeast trade winds throughout the year. The marina is divided into a northern section and southern section – both on the mainland – which, together, comprise 507 wet berths accommodating vessels from 11m to 60m, with Poralu floating pontoons in the northern section

Collaborating and unifying Darrouzet’s vision for Abell Point included a vibrant events calendar. Because of this, the Abell Point Yacht Club (APYC) was of particular interest. “Most marinas around the world have a yacht club that attracts people to visit and provides the opportunity to run sailing and cruising events,” Darrouzet explains. He intends to strengthen participation between the club and the marina as part of his vision for Abell Point to become a destination marina.

Redeveloping: North and South

A warm welcome on the docks. The marina runs at full occupancy between July and November.

Despite this, redevelopers felt they could offer even more and, with a $10 million budget, set out to push the limits. The A, B and C arms of the marina have been upgraded with two new 60m superyacht berths, serviced by roll-on, roll-off truck provisioning and service. The fuel wharf has also been upgraded and now offers premium unleaded fuel with a 24-hour fuel card to be implemented in the near future. Guest toilets, showers and laundries have been refurbished throughout the marina.

increased shade and rest stations. The marina office was demolished and replaced by open paving complete with seating and picnic area. This area has been designed to host future music events and barbecues.

The entry to the South Marina Village now offers a streamlined multi-lane arrival and departure plaza with two large covered porches providing allweather protection. An additional 250 parking spaces have been installed to reduce waiting time. The boardwalks in the precinct have been upgraded and the Marina South office has also been overhauled. Restaurant offerings were improved: the new Barcelona tapas bar offers a vibrant place to relax and enjoy Spanish cuisine, while a major extension to the balcony of the existing Sorrento’s restaurant – aiming to be the best outdoor area on the coast – allows for greater capacity and superb views out over the coral sea. Further restaurant and café options are being explored to enhance the appeal of the marina.

The developers next turned their attention to access from the water. With a view to providing excellent, costeffective and timely services, the team implemented a dredging programme to ensure all-tide access for the largest of craft. This ambitious programme was scheduled to commence in July 2014 and take one year to complete. Hoping to meet not only the needs of boaters, but also those of the local community, the team decided to use the dredged marina mud to create a two-acre community parkland. This new parkland replaces a dredge pond – described

The APYC holds a number of major sailing and cruising events throughout the year from its clubhouse at Sorrento’s restaurant in the northern section of the marina. Members of the yacht club receive a club cap, burgee and membership card. A standard membership is $80 and $150 if a silver card is required for racing under Yachting Australia. The APYC is also set to sport a new look, with committee members voting to adopt the new Abell Point Marina brand, which extends the marina’s offering and further bolsters the relationship. Ever popular, visitors at Abell Point have been thrilled with the developments. The marina runs at full occupancy over the cruising season between July and November, when sailing and cruising conditions are best. However, berths can be reserved for stays as short as four hours or for as long as 12 months.

In the northern section, the North Marina Village has also been refurbished to provide a relaxed environment in the midst of a bustling port, while providing easy access to marine services. Key changes of note are the new ocean side facilities, refurbishment of village buildings and

TALKING SHOP Ingemar supplies 10,000m² of floating jetties, platforms and walkways for the annual Genoa International Boat Show.

Lorenzo Isalberti: “As a yachtsman, my ambition was to boost the number of tourist moorings in ports and harbours.”

35 years of growth and innovation Italian company Ingemar celebrates its 35th anniversary this year with a strong order book comprising multiple domestic and overseas contracts and a determination to continue to promote quality mooring systems to the marina industry. Carol Fulford invited Lorenzo Isalberti, co-founder of Ingemar and owner and president of the Ingemar Group, to talk shop Q: Ingemar was formed in 1979 in Milan. Why and how was the company established? A: It was mainly motivated by my passion for sailing, to capitalise on my engineering degree within my favourite environment and to put my previous experience in the field of prefabricated mooring structures to good use. As a yachtsman, my ambition was to boost the number of tourist moorings in ports and harbours. A group of enthusiastic yachting friends shared this goal. Together, we formed Ingemar, a maritime engineering company specialising in the design and construction of floating structures. Contrary to what its spelling suggests, it was – and is – a 100% Italian company. The name is an acronym of INGEgneria MARittima (Maritime Engineers).

22

Q: What was your primary focus? A:Initially we concentrated on promoting the use of floating pontoons which, at the time, were little known and nearly always ‘homemade’, unreliable and short-lived. We put a lot of energy into convincing specialists and investors of the virtues of floating systems as an interesting alternative to traditional fixed structures. Much technical drive also went into developing different types of pontoons and establishing good relationships with suppliers. We secured contracts for yachting associations and public authorities, both in Italy and abroad. Q: Did Ingemar look at other markets? A: Yes. Our engineering expertise encouraged us to undertake further research into the application of floating

structures and this has been a focus for us since the early 1980s. Example projects include construction of an electrode-carrying floating pontoon installed in Sardinia for ENEL, the Italian Electricity Board; a huge floating platform for shows, which is still in use for Idroscalo in Milan; and floating breakwaters, patented with Pirelli AIG, that are still in place on Lake Como. These types of floating structures – as well as floating bridges – continue to form an important part of our business but Ingemar is truly renowned within the yachting sector. We derive 60 to 70% of our overall turnover from the marina market. Q: Where are Ingemar systems built? A: In 1989 we established an independent construction facility in Silea near Treviso and in 2004 we acquired our own production workshop at Casale sul Sile near Venice, specifically designed to optimise and improve our operations. Today, we are one of the few companies in the sector with in-house production and an active R&D department that allows us to anticipate customer needs. The production of reinforced concrete elements and assembly of the more important components is carried out in the Casale sul Sile factory. For southern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern markets, we use selected suppliers and partners but maintain direct links

TALKING SHOP

with each client and strict control of production. This ensures we give the necessary technical support during each phase of the design, production and installation and also guarantees the quality of the work. Q: In addition to supplying pontoons for many prestigious marinas in Italy (most recently, Marina di Stabia and Marina del Gargano), you have impressive overseas references. How has your export business developed over the past 35 years and how important is export for the future? A: The earliest foreign commissions of interest began in the 1980s with installations in Malta, France, Portugal, Monte Carlo and former Yugoslavia. By 2000, Ingemar was working in Greece with installations for Gouvia Marina in Corfu and Lefkas Marina; the regional port of Locarno in Switzerland; and Jasmine Marina in Hammamet, Tunisia. Since then, we built Marina Novigrad and Marina Kastela in Croatia, Mytilene Marina in Rhodes and marinas in Monte Carlo and, again, Switzerland. We have industrial pier projects ongoing in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Over the past three years, foreign markets have made an important, although somewhat variable, contribution to our turnover at around 35%. But overseas projects will be ever more important for the company’s

growth. Our priority is to consolidate our presence in the countries where we already operate but we are also looking at new markets in some of the South American countries and in eastern Asia. Q: What are the highlights of your current product and service portfolio? A: In addition to ‘standard-size’ floating pontoons, we have successfully developed new technology to improve the performance of floating jetties for superyachts and developed increasingly effective and reliable floating breakwaters. Our earlier pontoons, all-concrete or steel framed with timber deck and concrete floats have been complemented by lightweight alternatives with aluminium frames and rotomoulded polyethylene floats. With top of the range products in the mix – such as the 20m long breakwater elements at D-Marin Port Göcek in Turkey and 9m-wide floating jetties used for the Genoa Boat Show – we can build and install entire floating marinas autonomously. Q: Do you see Ingemar as an innovator? A: I believe the company has demonstrated innovative characteristics in many ways. Aside from expanding the application and performance of floating structures for superyachts and floating breakwaters, and our increasingly practical use of renewable materials, we are strong on research.

www.marinaworld.com - September/October 2014

Novigrad Marina, half way between Porec and Umag in Croatia, has five-star facilities and an Ingemar marina system. Our work in the fields of performance and environmental sustainability has led to the use of different concretes (lightweight, GRC – glass fibre reinforced cement – and added colours); protective systems for steel (duplex galvanising cycle plus paint coat); and sustainable timber (FSC certified to limit deforestation). Since 2005, we have been carrying out a research campaign on floating breakwaters. This has enabled us to develop new types, such as the version installed at D-Marin Port Göcek, which is the largest Ingemar has built to date and also has a newly developed site specific anchoring system. Q: What particularly noteworthy projects spring to mind? What was the most challenging? A: Our most important contribution to sport was without doubt the installation of floating structures for the yachting and canoeing venues at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The Genoa Boat Show, which saw huge growth from 2005 to 2008, is an annual international showcase for us with 10,000m² of Ingemar floating jetties, platforms and walkways that highlight our mooring structures for yachts of all sizes. Ayla Marina in Aqaba, Jordan, was an impressive customised commission

TALKING SHOP The pontoons and fingers for Ayla Marina in Aqaba, Jordan, have to fit an irregular quay profile.

for 3km of pontoons and fingers that fit an irregular quay profile, and installations at Porto Montenegro have tested our ability for diversification to the maximum with different style breakwaters, pontoons and floating jetties. The biggest challenge so far has to be the project for La’Ala Al Kuwait Real Estate at Sabah Al-Ahmed Sea City Project in Khieran, Kuwait. The project (see Marina World World News July/ August 2014) includes two marinas with a total of 1,300 berths in an indented artificial basin. We are currently constructing 6km of reinforced concrete floating structures and fingers for the first marina alone. This is a hugely prestigious contract for our company and a tribute to our engineering abilities and our flexibility in adapting to specific requirements.

For high profile work we find ourselves increasingly in competition with large international companies and for smaller projects we compete with local builders - who are often improvisers managing to put together a seemingly attractive bid but offering dubious quality and reliability. Q: What industry trends do you see emerging and how is Ingemar working to cater for these trends? A: I think that turnkey construction will become more frequent and greater attention will be paid to safety, the environment and giving the disabled access to, and use of, marina facilities. In terms of safety, I mean more diligent application of legislation rather than increased and tighter rules. It is inconceivable that today many facilities have ‘homemade’ pontoons that do

not follow even the most elementary rules of safety. And installation is often carried out by amateur divers without the necessary expertise. Ingemar has a number of product certificates and, for the construction of all complex projects, works with the major international classification societies for the approval of the design and calculations and, in some cases, for the fabrication and installation as well. Greater attention could also be paid to the environment, not only with regard to materials, production technology and recycling but, more importantly, in the use of natural materials which better integrate with the surrounding environment. Blueprints of installations, lay-out, visible obstructions, interference with the seabed, form and colour should be the object of greater scrutiny as marinas are usually built in special natural surroundings. Accessibility for the disabled has long been part of design projects for large tourist ports but should also be taken into consideration for smaller projects. Entrances should be wide enough and have adequate slopes in all sea conditions, and access to the most functional areas should be guaranteed for all. Individual lifts to access boats by the handicapped and specific security accessories must become part of the indispensable equipment at every modern marina. Gouvia Marina on the island of Corfu was Ingemar’s first project in Greece.

Q: What are the most significant changes you have noticed in the industry during your career to date? A: The quality of products and services offered by specialist manufacturers has greatly improved partly as a result of better technical legislation. Large companies like Ingemar have paid great attention to the development of high performance structures for mooring ever larger boats and achieving new mooring space through more efficient and reliable breakwater elements. More and more frequently, investors demand a turnkey formula, which means that the supplier must have the ability, capacity and high technical, organisational and operational skills of a main contractor. Competition has increased – and the returns have become less remunerative.

"Pontoons designed to stand up to extreme conditions" When I met the manager of Poralu Marine, North America, what I liked was that he understood my concerns immediately. In Quebec, the range of temperature between winter and summer is immense. The pontoons are immersed in water (I should say in ice!) all through the winter!… The mechanical stresses are therefore extreme. In spring, when I opened the marina to the public, the pontoons, catwalks and bridges were in perfect condition. The marina was ready to welcome users in less than a day of preparation. My logistic expenses have been optimised and my teams can concentrate on other tasks. Sylvain Deschamps Director, Montreal Yacht Club

National ‘love of sea’ keeps marinas on even keel The situation is, however, changing. The debate on state concessions has been postponed to 2020, a blue sticker system (Bollino Blu) has been implemented to exempt boats from duplicate inspections and an ownership tax has replaced the mooring tax. The new government is working to establish a central computerised system for registering boats and issuing navigation documents, and is reducing VAT to 10% at tourist

Despite having well distributed modern marinas and harbours, and a wealth of natural, historic and sporting attractions, Italian marinas suffered great distress from the financial crisis and the Italian Government tax initiatives in 2011. The latter were only revised when boat owners actually fled the marinas leaving ugly gaps in an infrastructure that boasts more berths than any other Mediterranean country.

In the Italian regions where yachting is an established national pastime, marinas are enjoying good times regardless of fewer international clients and the economic difficulties of recent years. Donatella Zucca reports

Marina di Pescara in Abruzzo is one of the largest marinas in this part of the Mediterranean and has around 1,000 berths.

ports and marina resorts, most recently in regions such as Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia Romagna and Liguria. Change is essential, as between 2011 and 2013 40,000 berths were empty, people spent fewer days on board their boats and many owners did not take their boats out to sea at all. This was very unusual as, in general, the Italian marina is seen as a holiday location where boat owners use their boats as floating homes and spend

less than they would on another type of vacation. Only serious boaters at marinas with strong sailing traditions continued to use their boats at prerecession levels.

Region by region When assessing the boating regions, certain differences are immediately apparent. Those facing the Tyrrhenian Sea have the highest number of marinas and the best nautical

Porto Carlo Riva in Rapallo, Liguria, was the first Italian marina to be built on modern lines. Founded by boat builder, Carlo Riva, it is still headed up by members of the Riva family.

Excluding the islands, which are special locations, Liguria enjoys the lion’s share of boating catchment, followed by Campania and Tuscany. On the east coast – on the Adriatic – Veneto, Marche, Puglia and Friuli Venezia Giulia are holding their own despite competition from countries like Slovenia and Croatia. Friuli Venezia Giulia stands out as having the highest number of regional boaters who moor up at 13,831 berths along a predominantly sandy 320km coastline. In the southern Adriatic, fees are low, marinas are new and the yachting tradition is less established. In the Abruzzo and Basilicata regions, there are new high level marinas that deserve more international recognition. Marinas in Sicily also warrant more attention from overseas visitors and Sardinia, established on the international scene, strives to extend its short summer-only season. Throughout the country, over 97% of berths are leased by Italians on a permanent basis. Mostly, the berths are under 10m or between 10 and

MARKET FOCUS: ITALIAN REGIONS will have over 850 berths up to 80m in length when finished. Maritime tradition is underscored by Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia, which was founded in 1893. In 2001 Vincenzo Onorato with Mascalzone Latino launched a challenge to the 2003 America’s Cup from this club and renewed the challenge again for 2007.

Marina d’Arechi is one of the larger marinas in Campania, a region with a strong nautical tradition. 18m. Rates, service, local scenery and proximity to cities are all important to the customers but often just one single factor is enough to satisfy. The NaQi (Nautical Quality Index of the National Nautical Observatory) examined the preferences and simple ‘love of the sea’ won through in all regions.

Liguria,

home to the Riva The nautical sector makes a valuable contribution to the regional economy in Liguria. Genoa has four public marinas in addition to the large Marina Genova Aeroporto and La Spezia facilities. Along the coastline there are at least 70 mooring structures but, although modern and well occupied, they are not all as well organised as top facilities like Marina di Loano, Porto Lotti or Marina di Varazze.

Cannes in France. Still headed up by members of the Riva family, it has maintained its high levels of quality and expanded its distinguished clientele despite the economic downturn. Porto Carlo Riva now offers 400 berths of 6 to 42m. Most berth holders are Italian and many are members of the Rapallo Yacht Club.

Campania,

unique for tourists Campania also has a strong nautical tradition. Its climate makes for excellent regattas and its tourist attractions are unique. Naples boasts at least seven boat harbours including Marina Mergellina along Via Caracciolo and the part-completed Marina Vigliena, which

The Pontine archipelago, the popular Aeolian Islands, and Procida, Ischia and Capri have well equipped tourist ports, and coastal Campania sports old piers, moorings and quite small marinas (often enlarged and improved) near every town. Larger, new facilities include Marina d’Arechi and Marina di Stabia; an MDL Italy marina with 900 berths for vessels up to 100m and a yacht club with Michelin starred restaurant.

Tuscany,

shipbuilding experience Tuscany has several marinas and can offer the highest levels of refit as the province of Lucca is home to shipbuilders with centuries of experience. Viareggio has 2,000 berths up to 80m; Marina Cala de Medici, 650; and Porto di Pisa, 350. Marina di Scarlino is among the most elegant marinas in the region and 12 mooring structures can be found on the island of Elba. Boaters seeking exclusive facilities head for Marina di Punta Ala near Castiglione della Pescaia, a sheltered

Another star marina is Porto Carlo Riva in Rapallo, which retains its allure from generation to generation. Built in 1971 by the famous entrepreneur and boatbuilder Carlo Riva to provide worthy mooring for owners of Riva boats, it was the first Italian marina to be built on modern lines and was inspired by Port Pierre Canto To the northeast of Italy – from Venice to Trieste – marinas include Marina Hannibal, a hidden gem with loyal long-term customers.

MARKET FOCUS: ITALIAN REGIONS

Marina di Punta Ala near Castiglione della Pescaia in Tuscany is a sheltered marina with 800 permanent berths and 93 visitor berths. It attracts high profile Italians and the Punta Ala Yacht Club is renowned for competition sailing. marina with 800 permanent berths and 93 visitor berths, which is virtually a club for high profile Italians and sportsmen. The club proper, Punta Ala Yacht Club, is intensely sporty and the home of Luna Rossa and the Prada team; stars of the America’s Cup. The club has plenty of facilities including a 100 ton boat hoist but also benefits from its location in the beautiful wild Tuscan countryside.

Friuli Venezia Giulia, home of the regatta From Venice to Trieste, sportsmen enjoy an organised schedule of 100 nautical events per year as Friuli Venezia Giulia with its 11 private marinas has a strong sailing ethic. Porto San Rocco, Marina San Giusto and others are well known but smaller Marina Hannibal is perhaps a hidden gem with loyal long-term customers and an earnest sailing tradition. Founded in 1964 at the behest of famous sailor Hannibal Pelaschier, it was possibly the very first Italian marina and now has around 300 berths and can accommodate yachts up to 50m. Pelaschier, helmsman of Azzurra

in 1983, the first Italian boat to compete for the America’s Cup, never lost his passion for boating. Marina Hannibal, in fitting tribute, is a sea of sails.

Marche,

popular with locals Boating in Marche – to the north and facing the Adriatic – is popular with locals despite shallow seas and the area around Ancona is supported by an important boating industry. Along the 180km coastline from Gabicce to San Benedetto del Tronto there are several marinas including Marina di Cattolica, Marina di Rimini, Marina dei Cesari and, most particularly, Marina Porto San Giorgio. All have scenic backdrops and can accommodate superyachts. Porto San Giorgio has 800 berths from 8 to 50m, top class infrastructure and has been offering quality hospitality to boaters for 30 years.

Abruzzo,

a well kept secret Despite having several beautiful marinas, new and refurbished, Abruzzo has until recently been overlooked by the yachting world. Marina del Sole and Marina Sveva are good examples

www.marinaworld.com - September/October 2014

as is Marina di Pescara. Close to Gargano National Park and 60nm from the Tremiti Islands, popular venues for regattas, Marina di Pescara is among the largest marinas in this part of the Adriatic. With a water area of 107,000m² and 200,000m² of land, it has around 1,000 berths up to 35m. Nearly 700 of these are leased out on permanent long term concessions.

Puglia,

welcoming superyachts Further south in Puglia, there are many mooring centres largely occupied by local boats and at least 13 splendid new facilities able to accommodate superyachts. Marina di Rodi Garganico won the 2013 PIANC Marina Excellence Design (Jack Nichol) Award and others, like Brindisi, Vieste, Santa Maria di Leuca, Gallipoli and Porto Marina are also prime examples of good design. Marina del Gargano (also known as Marina di Manfredonia), which was created in part of an old fishing port, became an immediate local attraction and venue for varied entertainment and sporting events. A yacht club opened in 2013. Upon completion, it will have 700 berths and is currently occupied primarily by local permanent boat owners – and enjoying more overseas visitors than expected.

DRYSTACK UPDATE Premium Marina Frade in Angra dos Reis has 60 drystack spaces for vessels of 30 to 60 feet. Several manufacturers in the region, e.g. GH, Demag and Feba in Brazil and D’Amico in Argentina, supply specialist gantry cranes for use in both inland and coastal marinas, where systems should last in excess of 30 years. Adopting a low cost boat handling system is not, however, part of a scheme to create budget marinas. Several facilities in both Brazil and Argentina cater for highend clientele – and can handle a substantial number of boats.

Electric gantry systems in South America

The use of electric gantry cranes for drystack operations is proving to be particularly popular in South America says Ronaldo Souza, director of Westrec Marinas Latin America. In use with a basic forklift or selfpropelled hydraulic trailer, the crane is claimed to be up to 70% cheaper (purchase and assembly) than boat hoists or straddle carriers and is safe and cheap to maintain.

packed to maximise use of space and the entire footprint need only be determined by the space required for the ancillary boat movers.

Good examples are to be found in Angra dos Reis near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a chic vacation destination that is known for its scenic waterways, calm beaches, dive spots and upscale hotels and shops. Premium Marina Frade in the elite Costa Verde region of Angra dos Reis is a case in point. The marina has 60 drystack spaces for power and sport fishing vessels of 30 to 60 feet in length. Haul out is achieved by means of a 50-ton gantry crane system and a 100hp marine tractor. The facility is very private and exclusive and the drystack buildings are fully enclosed. The marina features a crew lounge and convenience store and is fully gated with an extensive security system. It has a Westrec staff of nine. A fuel dock and ship’s store are planned

Able to handle vessels up to 80 feet in length, the crane operates swiftly (30 feet per minute) and, as it lifts but doesn’t move boats, is very safe. Further economic advantages lie in reduced maintenance and operating costs. Electricity is cheaper than diesel fuel and there are no diesel engines or hydraulic systems to maintain. As the cranes are easily operated, with just three buttons to press, skilled drivers are not required and operator wages are thus lower. The system is also easy on the environment with no carbon emissions and low noise operation. The use of a forklift or hydraulic trailer ensures that boats can be closely Vessels at Premium Marina are hauled out of the water using a 50-ton GH gantry crane system.

50th Anniversary

Using tradition as a driving force HydroHoist Marine Group manufactures and sells lifts ranging from 900lb drive-on docking platforms for PWCs to lifts that accommodate 130,000lb boats. With its additional brands HyPower and Rotek, it has grown over the past 50 years to serve a worldwide marketplace. And, like all the best success stories, chapter one was written by one man with one good idea. Rutter’s first mechanism consisted Henry Rutter, a marina owner with of inverted glass fibre tubs and a used a dry storage facility in northeastern vacuum cleaner motor. Today, the company exports to 23 countries, has an international distribution and dealer network in 18 countries and has five distribution warehouses throughout the USA. In the US it has a network of more than 600 dealers, some of whom have been with HydroHoist for over 35 years. But it retains Rutter’s pioneering spirit. “We never take for granted that we’ve been in business for 50 years. We actually use the tradition as a driving force to consistently improve our products,” Webber asserts. “The past year, for example, has seen some great innovations with enhancements to our existing products, the introduction of our new Air-Assist series of hoists

one of its outstanding features is its adaptability with various types and shapes of docks. “The accessibility and non-skid walkway on each side makes this one of the most user-friendly hoists on the market,” he adds. The lift is offered with either an AC control unit or optional solar/ DC.

The HydroHoist Group also includes Rotek – a support division offering rotomoulded products such as the easily recognisable blue tanks in the boat lifts – and HyPower. Revamp progresses at South Dock Southwark Council’s South Dock Marina, located on the south bank of the Thames downstream from Tower Bridge and upstream from Greenwich, is the largest marina in central London. A major investment programme is in full swing to refurbish and update the infrastructure for its 200 berths, 130 of which are for residential use. The project included replacement of existing timber walkways and pontoons with 4,000m² of light brown coloured Dura Grating Mini Mesh glass fibre marina decking, supplied and installed by Dura Composites. The contract was the biggest singlemarina order received by the UKbased specialist decking company to date. Marina service pedestals were replaced with Rolec Classic pedestals and a new floating shower and toilet block with utility room facility was built and installed by Walcon Marine. The building was designed in consultation with the berth holders and also meets the marina requirements for efficiency and low maintenance. According to Patrick Keating of South Dock management company, Yachting Worldwide, berth holders are very pleased with the results. They have been integral to the selection

process throughout the project and assessed a variety of test decking panels before a decision on this aspect of the project was made. The Mini Mesh was favoured for its proven gritted anti-slip surface that is safe in wet, oily and icy conditions and its 50-year life span. Yachting Worldwide has extended its contract to provide marina management and harbour master services to Southwark Council for a further three years. This includes managing the South Dock marina facility and providing management and advice on all docks and waterbased infrastructure within the borough. Marketing boost for AMI

ValvTect Petroleum has announced a new joint marketing partnership with the Association of Marina Industries (AMI). Starting immediately, all new Certified ValvTect Marinas who are not members of the AMI will be offered a free firstyear membership. The fee will be paid entirely by ValvTect on behalf of the marina. “As a former AMI board member and strong advocate of the association, I am pleased to help increase AMI membership by supporting this

programme,” said ValvTect president, Jerry Nessenson. “I am confident that once marina operators understand the important work AMI does on behalf of the marina industry and marina operators, they will see the value of being an AMI member,” he added. Blue Star marinas

receive insurance bonus

Blue Star marina certification offered by the International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) now has a valuable insurance element due to a new cooperation with Dutch company Wind Nautical. IMCI and Wind Nautical – a specialist marine trade insurance broker – have announced a niche insurance package product which covers all aspects of yacht and marine trade operation with emphasis on marina operators, yacht clubs, boat dealers and yacht repairers. The policy is underwritten by the Watkins syndicate at Lloyd’s through GJW Insurance. The beauty of the partnership is that Blue Star assessment pinpoints risks, provides a detailed overview to tailor the insurance policy specifically to the site and thus avoids

insurance gaps. A successfully certified marina also receives credit points from Wind Nautical, which reduces insurance rates. IMCI managing director, Ulrich Heinemann, describes the process as a win-win situation for the marina operator – all the PR benefits and kudos of being a Blue Star marina and customised insurance cover. Wind Nautical CEO, Henricjan Wind, says that the certification process guarantees a thorough assessment of topics dealing with risk management. Contact IMCI in Belgium on email: info@imci.org

La Rochelle Marina selects R-marina solution On 1st July 2014 La Rochelle Marina in western France commenced the first of two extensions which will increase its capacity from 3,600 to 4,800 berths. The end result will make La Rochelle one of the two biggest marinas in France and amongst the five largest in Europe. Approval for the extension was granted in June 2010 by the Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development & the Sea; an approval that is only granted for exemplary, high quality projects. The expansion is being conducted to comply fully with top environmental standards and in conjunction with the ISO 14001 certificate for water quality which the port of La Rochelle has retained since 2006. In order to meet environmental goals, the marina opted to establish special infrastructure to remotely monitor and control all equipment deployed in the different basins. The network had to be reliable and cope with high throughput. Tenders were invited, and S2F Network - a company that specialises in wireless solutions for complex environments - was

contracted to supply the material assets, including the core network and industrial grade distribution switches. The company utilised its R-marina solution. S2F Network installed 18 very high density Ruckus Wireless Wi-Fi access points on the wired infrastructure to ensure perfect coverage and take high speed Wi-Fi to the boaters. Marina staff can safely use the same network on a short term basis to monitor and even remotely control equipment as diverse as digital dynamic display screens, contactless card readers for pontoon access, sanitary and electrical distribution points and CCTV cameras. “Installed on polyester tipping mats, the new terminals are perfectly integrated into the landscape and broadcast a very good Wi-Fi signal everywhere on the basins,” says marina

IT manager, Sylvain Moinard. “The R-marina solution met all our expectations – quality Wi-Fi signal, much easier access to Wi-Fi network, safety and environmental integration into our information system including our UCOPIA [guest portal] platform.” “We look forward to deploying this solution in the beautiful Old Port to provide more services to our boaters and to finally receive CCTV images of perfect quality,” adds Frédéric Demangeot, technical director of the Port of La Rochelle, who also thanked S2F for

meeting the tight schedule. Deployment of the R-marina system in the Old Port is scheduled for 2015. Contact S2F Network in France on email: contact@r-marina.com

GCCM invests in boat movers Gold Coast City Marina (GCCM) owners Patrick and Trenton Gay have purchased two Ascom boat moving machines to enable the yard to handle larger vessels. The 250-tonne capacity straddle carrier and 45-tonne hydraulic trailer cost approximately AU$1.3 million. GCCM general manager, Steve Sammes, explained the benefits of the new equipment. “The lift operators will be able to work closely alongside every vessel throughout the entire lift operation,” he said. “This allows for precision lifting and sling placement and gives

Shepards Wharf Marina in Cowes, Isle of Wight, officially commissioned a new £150,000 hydraulic marine crane at a well attended launch party on 28th July. The machine enables the marina to streamline its ‘dry sailing’ (lift and launch) operation for all customers, including those who make up the Cowes Etchells racing fleet. a telescopic outreach of 14m. It has a 360° turn and can be slewed continuously. The hoisting, derricking, extending and slewing mechanisms are all driven hydraulically. In addition, the system has been equipped for man-riding operations up to 500kg with a reach of up to 20m above water, making the stepping of a mast a very simple procedure. Corrosion resistant plasma coatings designed for harsh marine environments have been used on the telescopic rams, offering protection and good sliding properties. The new dry sailing crane is one of the largest of its type in the UK and offers the marina much improved operating procedures, enabling Shepards to lift any single point yacht, motor boat or RIB, quickly and quietly. This will future-proof the marina’s dry sailing operation against lifting requirements in the years to come.

... and Balizas for South Korea The popular Baliza pedestal proved to be the unit of choice at Daemyung Resort Marina (left) and provided Rolec with its first opportunity to introduce this product to the Korean market.

Classics for Denmark... Rolec Services has supplied 40 customised Classic power pedestals to Jyllinge Harbour in Roskilde, Denmark. They form part of a project to completely rebuild the marina after it was destroyed by storms and flooding in December last year. Working closely with its Danish agent, Rolec supplied the six-way pedestals with a tight turn-around so as to

ensure the marina was up and running as soon as possible and ready for the new season.

Rolec operations director, Holly Brown, commented: “The supply of pedestals to Daemyung reaffirms the popularity of our Baliza range, adding to similar recent Baliza projects Rolec has carried out in Bahrain, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Venezuela – as well as throughout the UK and Europe.” “The Daemyung marina needed a supplier with units that could match the unique specifications of its rotary moulded polyethylene floating pontoon. We were able to

provide the perfect solution as our Baliza pedestals are made out of the same density material,” she added. “The pedestals are hard-wearing products with a UV stabilised finish – the exact match the marina was looking for.” The Baliza safely supplies electricity and water as each contains three separate compartments featuring individual service and cable/pipe entry points. expert board members comprise Risto Kyhälä, Vesa Koivula and Antti Niemi.

Jukka Saarikko Jukka Saarikko has been appointed CEO of Marinetek Group, Finland. He has been with the company since 2007 and has been executive vice president since 2012. The move coincides with the company’s 20th anniversary. Company co-founder, Ilkka Seppälä, stepped down as CEO in August to become full-time chairman. “Now that Marinetek has 20 years of strong global growth under its belt, I think it’s the perfect time to leave my duties as CEO and concentrate on ensuring the sustainable growth and strategic development of the company from the boardroom,” he said. “We have much to look forward to.” Saarikko will focus on streamlining existing operations and building success on all markets. The corporation comprises 24 different companies, ten of which are outside of Finland in countries such as the USA, Singapore, Dubai, Sweden, Croatia and Russia. “The core business of the company is now doing well and our market position in the Nordic countries, Russia, Croatia, Denmark, Poland and Romania is very strong. My most pressing tasks will be to further develop business activities in the USA and complete our integration with the companies we have purchased in Sweden,” he commented. Marinetek also welcomes a new board member, Pekka Luoma, who brings a wealth of international business experience. He worked for 18 years at Ernst & Young – first as CEO and later as chairman – and served for six years on the board of Ernst & Young Global and EMEIA (Europe, Middle-East-India, Africa). The other

A promising order book and financial results described as “more positive” than for 2013, indicate a brighter future for the company, as Seppälä explained: “After many years of strong growth, Marinetek has been hit over the past three years by the panEuropean recession. This has most particularly affected our core business. Becoming established in markets in China and the USA has also taken a lot of resources in a falling market and major changes in customer expectations and financing tools have brought additional challenges.” “We now have a dream team and are developing our products and processes in different parts of the world,” he added. “Marinetek is back on track and growing again and we expect this year to be the best in the company’s history.”

Large tires to get over obstacles and it’s very easy to coil the hose on and off. Built in remote on/off control at any slip in the marina. I would recommend any marina operator to get this product.
