Let’s get this party started! Following hot on the heels of the VIVID® launch, we’re back to continue the good work with our new ‘House Party’ campaign. The focus is still on the way VIVID® allows customers to do more and be more – supported by the emotion of our ‘are you ready to be moved?’ philosophy. But this time we’re also showing how our ultrafast broadband provides the best real-life experiences for our consumers. The TV ad’s set in the middle of a great house party, with the legend that is Chaka Khan providing a funky soundtrack to proceedings. As we move through the party, it’s clear that VIVID® 200 is responsible for keeping everyone streaming, posting, gossiping, dancing and ultimately finding the one – for the party at least.


The party never stops To support this great TV advert, we’ve been busy creating some clever print ads that both highlight how our broadband has been leading the way and also shows the benefits ultrafast broadband has on entertainment – namely downloading music and movies in super-speedy times. We’ve also got SuperFibre 50 Explore the world of superfast internet. Our SuperFibre 50 service is perfect for superfast browsing and streaming. It’s the magic in our cables. We use underground coaxical cables, powered by DOCSIS® 3 technology, between the cabinet in the street and your customer’s property. The design of this cable itself is way better than the normal copper cable. It can hold on tight to top speeds over a much longer distance. And that gives our customers a better broadband experience than most of our competitors who use copper cables to reach the home.

DOCSIS® 3 technology

Why is it better? Companies like BT, Sky and TalkTalk can deliver superfast speeds to the cabinet using fibre optic cables. But then they use a small twisted copper pair to deliver their broadband from the cabinet to the home. Because these copper cables are thinner and badly insulated, they can only support lower frequencies. This means that the speeds delivered from the cabinet will ‘drop off’ because of what our tech guys call ‘electrical cross-talk’ (that’s interference to you and me). As the length of the copper wire increases, so does the cross-talk. Our Virgin Media network uses coaxial cable right from the cabinet to the home. This cable is extremely well insulated and its thick interior copper core makes it capable of delivering ultrafast speeds, up to 200Mbps, all the way to the home. And that gives our customers access to unrivalled speeds. That’s the power of our network.

Our fibre optic VS the competition’s fibre The key difference about our fibre optic broadband. Unlike our competitors, we use coaxial cables powered by DOCSIS® 3 technology to link your customer’s house directly to our fibre optic network. For their fibre products, our competitors use fibre optic cables to the green cabinet on the street, but that’s where it ends. Our fibre optic VS regular broadband (ADSL) The whole truth about fibre optic broadband. State-of-the-art fibre optic cable is different. Designed with the internet of today in mind, it transmits information by pulses of light so it doesn’t slow down over distance, unlike regular broadband delivered down a copper phone line. What happens at a Virgin Media install? We’ve included this handy section just in case your customers want to know what the Virgin Media install process is all about. Read on… Our technicians will visit at a time that suits your customer 1

They’ll be in one of our Virgin Media vans and carrying ID so your customer will know it’s us. We’ll also call when we’re on our way so they know when to expect us. They just need to make sure that somebody aged 18 or over is at home so we can do the install.

We’ll talk them through everything before we get started We’ll ask where they would like their kit to go and explain what we’re doing and why, as we do it. There’s no need to worry – all our friendly technicians are house-trained.

We’ll hook them up to our network Our technician may have to run a cable from our network to a small box fitted to a wall at the front of their property. We’ll agree to fit the cable where they want it to go, and won’t start work until they’re completely happy. Most importantly, we promise to leave everything the way we found it. In some cases, we may have to drill a small hole (just 10mm wide) through the wall of their home – so if your customer doesn’t own the property they live in, please ask them to get permission first.

Taking our telly too? 4

We’ll need to run a TV cable from the cable entry point in their home and connect it to our Virgin Media set top box, which we’ll place near the TV of their choice. If they are taking more than one box, we’ll also need to run a cable through their home to the other room.

Having a home line installed? 5

Their telephone cable will be fitted with a standard phone socket. Our technician will test their line to make sure everything is tip-top and let them know what their new phone number is (unless they decide they want to keep their old number).

What about broadband?

Our technician will place their Super Hub near the cable entry point in their home. We’ll just need to make sure it isn’t located close to other electrical equipment such as TVs and DVD players, or things that may affect the wireless signal (you know, like fish tanks and cordless phones).

Objection handling So what’s stopping them? Sometimes customers may have a few reasons for not considering a switch to Virgin Media. To help you with your sale, we’ve listed a few reasons here why they might be hesitant and how you can help them reconsider. • Upfront cost

• They don’t live in a cabled area

Sometimes this is a big issue, especially if it’s before payday and they don’t have £25 to cover it.

Your customer may not live in an area currently covered by our services.

Never fear! The cost is part of an installation fee and means you’ll get a dedicated engineer to visit and smoothly set everything up. If you’ve been offered free installation then this cost will be refunded to you.

We are constantly looking to upgrade our network and are working with large housing associations to bring cable to new builds. We also have a CableMyStreet system where you can ask our engineers if it is feasible to lay cable in an uncabled postcode.

•A lready have broadband and Virgin Media is too expensive Lots of customers don’t need superfast broadband and aren’t willing to pay the extra for it. They may be happy with their ADSL, they may have never seen the benefits of fibre optic and don’t understand what the big deal is. Fibre optic broadband is for people wanting a better, more reliable, faster broadband. It’s not necessarily about speed all of the time. Better bandwidth and reliability form a massive part of a customer’s broadband choice too, and the additional cost is minimal compared to the extra service a customer will receive. They might not think they need it until you can show them how they would benefit from it.

•V irgin Media don’t have Sky Atlantic Customers might worry they’ll miss a few of their favourite shows. We do offer a large selection of Sky channels, including hugely popular ones such as Sky 1, Sky Sports and Sky Movies. And if you’re still missing Sky Atlantic you could always sign up to Now TV (not available directly through Virgin Media).

•T ied into contract with another provider Your customer may already be in a contract with another entertainment provider. Don’t worry, we are constantly refreshing our offers and promotions, so rest assured that when the customer’s contract with the other provider has expired, you’ll be able to call and offer them a great deal.

•T hey feel our Asian bundle is not as good as on Sky Your customer may feel they don’t have as much channel choice. Our Asian Mela bundle includes 12 channels. It’s extremely popular and the channels included in this bundle like Zee TV and ARY Digital are seen to be the most popular Asian channels available.

•Y our customer is not able to have two accounts in one household If your customer would like to take our services but their parents/housemates do not want to add anything extra. We try to always protect our brand and customers, and by allowing more than one account in a home opens us up to risk and fraud. So we have these restrictions in place to benefit everyone.

• They’ll be moving home soon Your customer may be looking at a change of address in the near future. Not a problem. We’ll give your customer one free move over the course of their contract so they don’t have to worry about any installation costs. Provided they’re moving to a cabled area, we’ll be able to seamlessly move their services to their new home.

Non-Serve

Non-serve [or non-serviceable] is a term used to define an address or property that cannot receive our cable services. This could be for a number of reasons – including faults on the cable network, or simply that our network doesn’t cover that area.

Goneaway

This is when a new customer applies for our services at a property but the previous Virgin Media customer at that address didn’t tell us they’d moved. If this occurs, we have to follow a Goneaway process and try to make contact with the existing customer to update their account. Until this happens, we can’t proceed with a new sale.

Wayleave

A Wayleave is a legal agreement between VM and a landowner/freeholder to install and maintain equipment on their property. This is common in rented properties where we need permission from the landowner before we install our services. Once a Wayleave has been agreed for a property, we shouldn’t need another one in the future.

As a responsible lender, VM perform a credit score on all new customers. This credit score will look at the customer’s credit profile as well as other information found in public records. Occasionally, we may find something that we need to investigate further, and then the application will be referred to our underwriting team (known as the risk team). They’ll make a decision on whether it can proceed or not, and also what conditions of sale may apply.

If a customer is a higher credit risk to us than normal, we may ask for an upfront deposit before we install our services (to reduce risk and combat any potential non-payment). This deposit is retained on the customer’s account and is returned to them after their restriction period ends (usually 12 months). If the customer fails to pay for their services, we may use this deposit to reduce any debt they owe.

Spotters are field-based agents who visit properties to confirm serviceability. Where we are unsure of a property’s serviceability status, we may send a Spotter to visit the address and confirm if they are able to have our services or not. If the address can receive our services, then these agents will work with the customer to complete their order.
