Statement F r o nt R oom Ga l l e r y i s p l e a s e d to present Stephen Mallon’s “Brace For Im pact: t h e a ft e rma t h of fl i g h t 154 9.” It is ver y difficult to encapsulate the events that h a ppe n e d d u ri n g a n d fol l owi n g the crash of flight 1549, but Stephen Mallon’s l a r g e -s c a l e p h ot og ra p h s , t a ke n during the salvage of the fuselage and engine, i m pa rt a p h y s i c a l i t y a n d s c a l e to these incom prehensible occurrences. Mallon’s ph o t os p re s e n t u s wi t h t h e a fterm ath of this disaster and rem ind us how it was a v e rt e d d e s p i t e n e a rl y u n b e a t able odds through the m aster y and braver y of the pi l ot a n d c re w. N e ve r b e fore h a s a c omme rc i a l aircraft crashed in the Hudson with the com plete s u r vi va l of a l l p a s s e n g e rs a n d crew. They were rescued by the Circle Line s i g h t s e e i n g c ru i s e fe rr y (a l on g with other rescuers) alm ost instantly. Men, wom en a n d c h i l d re n wa i t e d t h e i r t u rn s patiently standing on the wings of the plane, halfs u bme rg e d i n t h e i c y wa t e r on what felt like the coldest day of the year. This feat i s a t e s t a me n t t o t h e b ra ve r y of the crew and passengers. A s t h e fu s e l a g e a n d e n g i n e of the aircraft were later brought up intact by a g i g a n t i c c ra n e a n d a t e a m of d ivers in heated wetsuits, Stephen Mallon captured t h e mome n t s t a n d i n g on t h e d eck of the crane- barge. In Mallon’s uncanny ph o t og ra p h s t h e p l a n e s ome t i m es appears to be a m etaphorical wounded anim al, l i k e a wh a l e l i ft e d c omp l e t e l y out of the water. It is dam aged, beat up and m issing o n e of i t s e n g i n e s , b u t i t n e ve rtheless sur vives. The divers, in their heated w e t s u i t s wi t h h u g e fa c e -g e a r, seem like astronauts floating through an icy void i n sp a c e . A n d , we fi n a l l y g e t a glim pse of the fam ous engine— disabled by som e u n f ort u n a t e Ca n a d i a n g e e s e —i n a stunning pseudo- portrait by Stephen Mallon as i t i s l i ft e d from s ome e i g h t y feet of icy water.
